1 Lighthouse News Week 4, Term 2 18 th May 2016 A Ministry of Wyong Baptist Church OUR MISSION To provide a Christian educational community founded on Biblically based beliefs, values and behaviour. We do this to equip young people to be responsible and responsive disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. Principal s Message Last week we looked at some verses in Matthew (see Shining Light to the left) and considered the call Jesus makes upon our lives and how it is a lifelong call that requires a total commitment. There is, however, another component to this call. Not only are these brothers called to follow Jesus, but they are also told what following Jesus would involve they would be fishers of men. As a follower of Jesus, we are also called to be fishers of men or, more simply, we are called to not only follow Jesus but also tell others about Him so they too can be followers. One of the things the Samoa mission team did whilst away was to run a program each morning for the children in the village in which we were staying. We sang songs, played games, did craft activities and also shared the gospel; that is, told them about Jesus, who He is and what He has done for them. SHINING LIGHT As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. Come and follow me, Jesus said, and I will make you fishers of men. At once they left their nets and followed him. We do not need to go overseas to do this. We can be fishers of men with the people we mix with on a daily basis. I love that Jesus tells his disciples that He will make them fishers of men. Jesus invested time in these men and coached them into this role. Sharing our faith can often be a difficult thing to do. In our staff devotions last week, Mr Wannan shared some wonderful practical principles that can make sharing our faith easier. They are derived from the apostle Paul and his teaching in 1 Corinthians 9: I thought they would be worth sharing with you: 1. Find common ground with those you come in contact with; 2. Avoid a know-it-all attitude; 3. Make others feel accepted; 4. Be sensitive to their needs and concerns; and 5. Look for opportunities to tell them about Christ. Happy fishing. God bless, Ian Liney Matthew 4:18-20 Page (@wyongccs)

9 Christian Ministry and Theology Last weekend saw three students and Mrs Drennan attend the second of our Christian Ministry and Theology weekend retreats. The theme of this retreat was The Mission of God. We loved reconnecting with students from the other schools whom we met at our first retreat. We stayed in the city in Sydney and had presentations from various people who are working in Christian Ministry. From mission in Africa, to the co-ordinator of Diamond Pregnancy who offer support and options to girls/women who are pregnant and considering abortion, to someone who works with people who live on the streets, followed by a Chaplain to the Fashion Industry; we heard many great stories about God at work through these people. Another highlight was having the opportunity to contribute $5 each and, in our small groups, choose how we might bless someone. The groups we were in chose to combine our money and buy things to go and give to some homeless people. Scary as it was, we went out and met some homeless people, offering them our gifts and chatting with them. We took the opportunity to tell them about God and His love for them and to pray with them which was such a privilege! We also managed to squeeze in a visit to the Lindt Café at Darling Harbour on Saturday night, which coincided with a fireworks display. It was a weekend full of reflection, opportunities and allowing God to use us and grow us. We are looking forward to our third and final retreat, later in Term 3.
