1 Weekly Notes 13 th December What is SMSC? We will shortly be undergoing our 5-yearly inspection as a church school. This is similar to an Ofsted inspection but concentrates on the church school mission and ethos. We are proud of our ethos so we hope to do well! One of the things we need to be sure of is that everyone involved with the school understands Our mission statement To pursue wisdom within a Christian ethos Our distinctively Christian values (kindness, respect, honesty, fairness, perseverance, trust) What spirituality is (the meaning, purpose and value in life) Spirituality is one of the four areas of SMSC Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development and we have added a briefing sheet to the news-sheet to explain what this means. We also have a policy on this on our website which explains how SMSC is taught and permeates the school. This link will take you to our new webpage Our School s Mission - Infant Nativity Triumph! We are delighted to report that the Infants performed brilliantly at their Infant Nativities despite not being able to practise in front of a dress rehearsal audience. We were thrilled that they overcame their stage fright and bravely spoke their lines, acted and sang their hearts out! More photos on our website -

2 PTA The last event of the term is the Family Christmas Disco tonight, December 13 th, from 6pm to 8pm at the school. No advance tickets are required, and payment on the door is 3.50 per child. All children must be accompanied by an adult and there will be a bar for the adults selling Prosecco, Wine and Beer along with various soft drinks. Big Thank You! A big thank you to all those who sent in a donation for wearing a Christmas jumper on pantomime day. We raised for the Daisy Garland charity which supports those whose lives are touched by epilepsy. Christmas Dates Friday 15 th December Junior Carol Service at St Mary s 2pm (parents collect from church at around 2.45pm) Monday 18 th December Infant Party Day Tuesday 19 th December school closes at 1.30pm Thursday 4 th January school re-opens at 8.40am Parents are warmly invited to come along to the Junior Carol Service at St Mary s on Friday 15 th December. An electronic form has been sent out to junior parents by ParentMail asking you to confirm the arrangement for collection of your child after the Junior Carol Service. Please complete this form as soon as possible. Thank you. Well done Harley! A big shout-out for Harley King in Year 2 who raised an incredible 500 for Children in Need in a cycle ride he was inspired to do last Sunday after seeing the One Show Rickshaw Challenge! 3 Stars of the Week Class R For week ending 8 th December Ruben-James Komaroni for having a great attitude to experimenting with ice and also for describing pictures well when he reads. Class 1 Otto Van Breukelen for being a great wise man in the Nativity, singing nicely and delivering his lines clearly every time without prompting. He is also wise in the classroom. Class 2 Ella Eden for stepping into the lead role in the Nativity at the last minute for a special audience and singing a big solo beautifully. Class 3 Dominic Redding for living the school values of kindness and perseverance. Class 4 George Dean for being really helpful with jobs around the classroom which is so useful for teachers at this time of year. Class 5 Lexi Eden for the fantastic effort she puts into all her work, including excellent and thoughtful homework, and also for the several class nominations she has received for being such a good friend. Class 6 Leonardo McGuffie for taking the time to check and improve his work, making it the best it can be, and for fantastic contributions during this week s PSHE workshop led by visitors. In our prayers this week We remember John Knox, chief server at St Mary s Church, and regular leader during our Wednesday Worship here at school, who has died suddenly. We pray for him, for his family and for our local community at this very sad time. Also, during this period of Advent we remember the beginning of the real Christmas story - God sent the Angel Gabriel to a town in Galilee named Nazareth to a girl betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The girl s name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is with you. Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. 4 What is SMSC? SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development) is a dimension of the whole school experience which makes the curriculum relevant, stimulating, creative and fun. It enriches each subject and the ethos of the whole school by encouraging us all to explore, in an appropriate way: Spiritual values are to do with questions of meaning, purpose and value in life. What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to be me? What are we here for? How do we relate to the world/universe? Moral values are to do with raising questions about right and wrong, often derived from spiritual values, and how we decide. How should we live our lives? Why should we be good? What do we mean by good? How do we respond to the many moral and ethical issues facing us in moral life? Social values are to do with relationships between people and groups of people and how these relate to our spiritual and moral values. Cultural values are to do with the different ways of experiencing, responding to and expressing the above that are found in the diversity of life in modern Britain and around the world. Weston Turville CE School is a Church School so its values are distinctively Christian. Other schools may have the same values, but ours are chosen because they come from the teaching of Jesus Christ. Whilst welcoming children from all faiths and from none, we encourage our children to remember that a Christian s spiritual values come from God, and our moral, social and cultural values are underpinned by this.
