Monuments of Remembrance During a walk at Idlewild Park in Easton this week, I noticed a five-foot pillar standing near the track with some writing on it. I did not recognize the writing, so I took a closer look. It was a Peace Pole with the phrase, May Peace Prevail On Earth appearing in a variety of languages on each of its six sides. Volume 11, Issue 8 Inside This Issue Pastor s Pen ~ Monuments of Remembrance - continued Power Kids - 30 Ways to Pray for Your Child Mission Moment - Operation Christmas Child Unfortunately, this monument to peace was in disarray; covered with dried grass and dirt with sections of the phrase missing in certain languages. Its condition served as a commentary not only about the lack of community care, but to the prevalent lack of peace in our world today. I was so disturbed by the condition of this pole, that I took it upon myself to wash it off with some bottled water and paper towels. I also cleared away the grass at the foot of the pole. I wanted others to see this monument and be reminded of our innate desire for peace. This pillar reminded me of another monument I saw recently at The Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC. It was a pillar of 12 stones in the Hebrew exhibit with the names of the 12 twelve tribes of Israel inscribed on them. This monument recounts God s faithfulness to Israel as He brought them safely out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. In Joshua 3, the Israelites are standing on the east side of the Jordan River looking across to the land promised by God to their forefathers some 400 years earlier. 2 (Continued from page 1 ~ Monuments of Remembrance) the Jordan River which was at flood stage and threatening to overflow its banks. Since this was a new generation standing on the shore, one that had not experienced the miracle of the Red Sea, God prepared them for yet another show of His mighty power: Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do amazing things among you (Joshua 3:5). Sure enough, the next day as the priests carrying the ark of the covenant bravely stepped into the raging river, God stopped the water from flowing upstream leaving a dry riverbed for the entire nation of Israel to cross to the other side. While the mass of people made their way across, the priests carrying the ark remained in the middle of the riverbed watching the wall of water continuing to build up to their right. Once the last person crossed, I am sure the priests were anxious to get out of there, but God had something else in mind. He instructed Joshua to have a member from each tribe go back into the dry river bed where the priests were standing and to pick up one large stone and carry it ashore. These 12 stones would be stacked upon one another and would be a memorial to God s faithfulness to the Israelites. It would serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, What do these stones mean? tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever (Joshua 4:6-7). REMEMBERING IS ESSENTIAL! Whether it be reminding ourselves of our innate desire for peace or of how God has intervened on our behalf, remembering is an essential part of our personal and spiritual journey. As writer and philosopher George Santayana has observed, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." Joshua wanted Israel and the generations that followed to remember God s faithfulness at the Jordan River so that they would not lose faith in whatever challenges lay ahead of them. Someone placed the pillar of peace in Idlewild Park as a reminder to all who would pass not only of our innate desire for worldwide peace, but also as an encouragement to pursue peace on earth. Is there something God wants you to be reminded of today? Is there a pillar that needs to be cleaned off or some stones that need to be stacked in your life to help you remember God s faithfulness, to experience His peace, and to encourage you to remain faithful no matter what? 4 Mission Moment OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD SHOEBOX MINISTRY There are a 120 Days Until CHRISTMAS and 84 Days Until Operation Christmas Child (OCC) Shoeboxes Are Due! Whether you ve planned ahead and set aside items for your boxes or if you were waiting until the time was right NOW IS THE TIME! NOW IS THE TIME to purchase school supplies. Without supplies many children around the world are not permitted to attend school. NOW IS THE TIME to purchase summer clothing at discounted prices. NOW IS THE TIME to select the number of boxes you wish to send and to set aside the shipping cost for each one ($9.00). Cardboard boxes are available free of charge. Reusable plastic boxes are available for $1.50. Or you can provide/purchase your own. NOW IS THE TIME to begin praying for the child(ren) that will receive your box(es). Remember that one box has the potential of reaching 50 people with the gospel of Jesus Christ simply by association. So, pray for the potential impact your box, packed with love and prayer, could have on an entire community. Thanks in advance for your faithful participation in and prayers for this ministry. 5 His Hope Ministries Homeless Shelter Will Open on Monday, September 10 th His Hope Ministries homeless shelter will open on Monday, September 10 th. Serving over 120 guests per year (with about half being children), we look to the entire local body of Christ to help us minister to those who are among the most vulnerable in our community. Here are some ways you can partner with us: Volunteer - Volunteers are needed at the shelter to hang out with guests, sort donations, play with the kids, etc. Volunteers are also needed at the Resource Center to teach classes on anything that will help someone be better prepared to live on their own (nutritious meal preparation, couponing, shopping on a budget, etc.), clean, help guests fill out job applications and write resumes, watch children while Moms are in class or job hunting, etc. If you would like to volunteer please contact Lynn (for Resource Center) or Travis (for shelter) at Prepare a Meal - Our shelter is dependent upon others to provide meals for our guests. We serve approximately 17,000 meals each year from September through May. If you, your small group or your business would like to provide a meal, please visit our Mealtrain at (lower case o ) to sign up. Plan to serve 20 adults and 15 children. Every meal is truly appreciated! Shower Totes - Local Caroline County churches have been working together to fill 150 shower totes (50 each for men, women and children). Christ Episcopal Church bought the totes as part of their 150 Day Love Challenge, and people from churches all over Caroline County have been collecting the needed items to fill them. We gather at different churches for an hour every other month to fellowship and fill totes. We will be meeting to fill the final 50 totes on October 27 th at Calvary Baptist. Safeguarding God s Children - This is a free workshop for anyone involved in Children s or Youth Ministry. All His Hope Ministries volunteers are certified through this training which provides practical strategies and considerations for ensuring the safety of the children in our care. If you are considering volunteering for the shelter or Resource Center, if you are involved in children s ministry, or if you are just interested in learning more, please join us on Tuesday, August 28 th from 5:30-8:30 PM at the Resource Center (located in the downstairs of Christ Episcopal Church, 105 Gay St. Denton.) RSVP to Lynn at Prayer 1. Please pray for a facility for year-round shelter. 2. Please pray for the families we housed over the summer and families we are working with right now. 3. Please pray for all of the guests we will serve this year: salvation, places to live, work through issues that lead to homelessness. 4. Pray for all staff and volunteers. 5. 6 Getting to Know BWC ~ Kevin & Michele Covey Kevin & Michele were married on May 21, 2011 and reside on Greensboro Road near Greensboro MD. Kevin was born on January 23, 1966 in Easton MD. Michele was born on December 13, 1964 in Wilmington DE. Kevin writes, I was born and raised a couple miles outside of Greensboro where I currently live. I lost my Mom in 1987 to cancer. That brought me and Dad closer together and sparked my interest in antiques. Therefore his hobbies include Antique Hit & Miss Engines and Antique Tractors. He continues, I stayed at home until I met my first wife at the Dover Roller Rink, (one of my other hobbies). She has two children from a previous marriage, so I became an instant Dad. I am still close with my stepson, Jonathan. After my marriage to Carrie ended, I met Michele and her son Zach. We became an instant family. Kevin s favorite color is green and his favorite food is lasagna. He doesn t like impatient people. Michele writes, I was born and raised in Hockessin DE, the youngest of four siblings. My Father was a Baptist Minister, then he became an elementary school teacher. My Mother was a stay at home mom until I started school then she became a real estate agent. I lived at home until I was 31, mostly to take care of my elderly parents. I am lucky enough to have one son Zachary, who is almost twenty-two years old; and an awesome stepson, Jonathan. Michele s hobbies include sewing, crocheting and cross stitch. Her favorite color is purple, favorite flower is the iris and favorite food is chocolate cake. Liars are her pet peeve. Kevin s Personal Testimony: When I was a small child, Mom took me to Greensboro Baptist Church. When I was a teenager I got saved at VBS and baptized soon after. After I lost Mom I walked away from church, but in my twenties I started back to church and rededicated my life to the Lord. Then I drifted away again until I got married to Carrie and we went to a new church. Then we found Bethel. When I remarried I introduced Michele to Bethel. We have found a happy and loving church family. Kevin s favorite hymn is Old Rugged Cross. His favorite Bible verse is John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Michele s Personal Testimony: I accepted the Lord as my Savior when I was 14 at a church camp. That following year I started attending Temple Christian School for 10 th grade. In 1982 I graduated from there. I continued for several years going to Fairwinds Baptist Church, then like most young adults, I walked away from church. In 2008 I met Kevin and started back to church here at Bethel where I feel truly loved by all the members Michele s favorite hymn is Good, Good Father. Her favorite scriptures are Matthew 22:16 - They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. Teacher, (Continued on page 7) P a g e 6

You aren t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are, as well as Psalm 62:2 - Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. Kevin took the Courageous Resolution on Father s Day and continues to meet with the Courageous Men s group on Monday nights. He also serves as a trustee and represents the trustees on the Local Board of Administration. Michele is currently leading Bethel s Women s Ministry and is available to give a helping hand in whatever capacity needed from reading Scripture, to mending costumes for the Living Nativity, to keeping records for our Sunday school department. Both Kevin and Michele serve as greeters and participate in the weekly Bible Study, Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyers. P a g e 7

8 National Back to Church Sunday, Sept. 16 Sunday, September 16 is NATIONAL BACK TO CHURCH SUNDAY! It s a good day to extend an invitation to friends or family members not currently attending church as well as to encourage all of us to get back into the routine of church attendance.
