2 PRESCHOOL How-to USE Bible Studies For Life: Preschool Worship enables kids toexperience an interactive large-group worship in a kid-friendly setting! The curriculum can be customized to fit the needs of your kids, leaders, and worship environment. Included are Bible stories, worship songs, videos, games, Bible verse activities, and more. There also are ideas for small group activities if you have a drop-off time before the session begins or a pick-up time as parents arrive at the end of the session. In the chart below is a breakdown of a suggested schedule. Adapt it to fit your time and space. Worship PRODUCTION NOTES Tailor Preschool Worship to your kids and leaders: For an easy prep: Enlist a Worship Leader to show the music videos and lead the songs. Prepare the Connection Point Game and Bible Verse activity, and show the videos for the Bible Story and Connection Point Missions. Have an additional leader? Enlist that person to lead the Connection Point Game, Bible Verse activity, and missions. Then prepare and tell the Bible story for an interactive experience with your kids. Do you have musicians who would like to lead worship songs? Check out the lead sheets on the DVD-ROM or substitute your songs. Need easy ideas for decorating your stage area? 3 PRESCHOOL UNIT 1. THE AMAZING POWER OF JESUS Worship DECORATING TIPS Build a thematic backdrop to create a fun and exciting worship experience for your kids. Use three 4-foot-by-8-foot-by-2-inch insulation boards to create a simple sky backdrop. Paint each board with blue water-based paint. Cut clouds out of cardboard or halfinch insulation boards. Paint white with water-based paint. Attach to backdrop with T-pins or hook and loop strips. Using a jigsaw, cut 2-inch insulation board to form trees and rolling hills. Paint green with a water-base paint. Create pinwheels by using colorful vinyl placmats. To add interest, vary the colors and patterns. Cut the placemat into a square. Once it is square, cut from each corner towards the center stopping just before the center. Do not cut through the center. Fold each corner in towards the center. Fold them one at a time and stack them on top of each other in the center. Using a upholstery tack or small nail with a large head, firmly attach pinwheel to a 1-inch dowel rod. Leaving room between the nail and dowel rod allows the pinwheel to spin. To create a base for dowel rods to stand by drilling 1-inch holes in a 2-foot-by-4-inch board. SIMPLE IDEAS TO ENHANCE YOUR LEARNING SPACE Purchase small pinwheels from your local discount store. Turn a large foam cup upside down and push a pinwheel s handle through the bottom of the cup. Line your stage area with the pinwheels. Create large pinwheels from poster board. (See instructions above. Use a paper brad to secure the corners instead of upholstery tacks.) Tape pinwheels to the wall. Cut poster board into large cloud shapes. Glue batting or cotton balls to cover both sides of the shape. Use fishing line to hang the clouds from the ceiling.

5 PRESCHOOL HUDDLE UPS (OPTIONAL) Huddle Ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins or a pick-up time as parents arrive at the end of the session. It s a great time for interaction with a small group leader through games, conversations, or review questions. Play the countdown video to signal the end of Huddle Ups and the beginning of the session. Describe an object in the room, such as: I spy a big, brown rectangle that opens. Challenge kids to guess the object. (door) Play again. Describe a different object or person. Choose a child to describe something for the other kids to guess. Play as your time allows. Comment that today s Bible story is about a man who was born blind. Explain that to be blind means to be unable to see. State that the man in the Bible story could not play I Spy because he could not see. JESUS HEALED A MAN BORN BLIND Tell preschoolers that today they will hear about a time when Jesus healed a man who had never been able to see. Distribute coloring supplies and coloring sheets to the preschoolers. Invite preschoolers to color on their pages while they wait for the session to begin. Suggest kids color on the backs of the pages if they prefer to use blank paper. WHAT COLOR IS IT? Prep: none Worship Scatter the sheets of construction paper throughout the play area and tape them to the floor. Draw kids attention to each paper. Lead kids to identify each color. Name an object in the room, a nature item, or describe a person s clothing. Guide children to move and stand next to the color that matches the named object. (For example, ask: What color is the sky? Kids should move to stand next to the blue sheet of paper.) Continue the game as your time allows. Name a few items (such as grapes or apples) that come in multiple colors. Remind kids that Jesus made a blind man well. The man could see colors, objects, and people! Lead preschoolers to say the Life Point: Jesus can help people. COUNTDOWN VIDEO Estimated time: 3 minutes Tech: Countdown video People: none (Play countdown video to signal the beginning of worship time. Kids will count aloud as they join the large group.) 6 PRESCHOOL Leader note: No rhythm instruments? No problem! Hit together empty paper towel rolls. Clap together two sturdy paper plates. Use a wooden spoon to drum on a building block. Put a few rice grains inside a plastic baby food container or small water bottle to make shakers, and secure the lids with tape or glue. WORSHIP LEADER Today we will hear about a man who was born blind. He could not see! Let s think about the ways God made our bodies. (Name each of the following senses and guide each preschooler to point to the appropriate part of his body.) God gave me eyes to see. (point to eyes) God gave me ears to hear. (point to ears) God gave me a nose to smell. (point to nose) God gave me a mouth to taste yummy foods. (point to mouth) God gave me hands to touch and feel. (hold up hands and wiggle fingers) I brought some instruments for us to play as we sing. We can use our hands to play the instruments and use our ears to hear them. (Use the instruments.) Let s sing and play instruments together! (Distribute the instruments. Show the music video. Lead kids to stand and sing. Collect the instruments after singing or instruct kids to place the instruments under their chairs.) WELCOME AND PRAYER Estimated time: 5 minutes Tech: Life Point and Bible Verse slides People: Bible Study Leader BIBLE STUDY LEADER Tell me the name of someone who loves you a whole lot! (Allow kids to respond.) There are so many people who love you! Now tell me someone YOU love a lot. (Allow for responses.) I m glad that God gives us people who love us, and I m happy that I can love others, too. Did you know there is Someone who loves you lots and lots and lots? It s Jesus! Our Bible verse says that Jesus loves and helps people. Listen as I say the verse, and then we will say it together. (Show Bible Verse slide select preferred version.) (Say the Bible verse and lead kids to repeat it after you.) Worship BIBLE VERSE (SELECT PREFERRED VERSION): Jesus loved and helped people. Let s say that together: Jesus can help people. It makes me happy to know that Jesus loves and helps me. Let s pray and thank God for His love. God, thank You that we can learn about Jesus. CONNECTION POINT GAME Estimated time: 10 minutes Tech: Connection Point Game slide People: Connection Point Leader, 8 kids Props: 2 chairs, 2 pillowcases, 2 apples, 2 oranges, 2 spoons, 2 markers, 2 toy cars, 2 small balls, 2 crayons, 2 blocks GAME INSTRUCTIONS: Place an apple, orange, spoon, marker, toy car, small ball, crayon, and block in each pillowcase. Choose 8 kids to play. Form 2 teams. Place 2 chairs at the front of the play area. Guide each team to form a line behind a chair. Invite the first player on each team to sit in the chair. Give him a pillowcase. Name an object in the pillowcase. Challenge the seated players to feel for the item without looking inside the pillowcase. Award a point to the team whose player finds and removes the item first. Return the items to the pillowcases. Invite the next players on each team to sit in the chairs. Name a different item for the players to find. Continue until each player takes a turn. If your time allows, allow each player to take 2 turns or invite 8 new kids to play. Recognize the team that earns the most points. Later, we will hear a Bible story about a man who could not see. Let s play a game without using our eyes to see! Who would like to play? (Invite eight kids to play. Form two teams. Guide each team to form a line behind a chair. Invite the first player on each team to sit in the chair.) (Show pillowcase.) Each team will have a pillowcase with lots of things inside. I will name one thing that s in the pillowcase. The players in the chairs will reach in the pillowcases and feel for the object. You may not look inside! When the player thinks he has found the object, he will take it out of the pillowcase and hold it up so everyone can see. (demonstrate) The team whose player finds the object first gets a point. We will play until each player takes a turn. Does everyone understand? (Answer any questions and play the game. Cheer for the winning team.) Great job, everyone! Some of those were not easy! An apple, orange, and ball are all round. Our players had to think hard about which one to pull out of the bag. They did GREAT! The man in today s Bible story had never seen an apple or an orange. He had never seen anything! The man had to feel things to know what they were. Let s sing another song, and then we will hear more about what happened to the man who was born blind. 8 PRESCHOOL game! (Lead kids to respond to each of the following instructions.) Use your eyes to see something in the room that is red. What do you see? Use your nose to smell. What do you smell? Use your hands to touch an object that is soft. What did you find that is soft? Shh. (whisper) Be very quiet and use your ears to listen. What is something you hear? Good job, everyone! Do you know something that I like to see and hear? I like to see and hear you singing songs about Jesus! Let s sing together. (Show the music video.) (Lead kids to sit as song ends.) BIBLE STORY Estimated time: 10 minutes Tech: Christ Focus, and Bible Story slides; Bible Story Time video (optional) People: Bible Story Leader Props: Bible, binoculars Option 1: Show the Bible Story Time video and conclude with a short prayer. God, thank You that Jesus made the blind man well. Thank You for eyes to see! Thank You for helping us and hearing us when we pray. We love You. In Jesus name we pray, amen. Option 2: Tell the following Bible story. Worship These binoculars help me to see, but our Bible story is about a man who could not see anything! The man was blind. He could not see things that were close to him. (Hold your hand close to your face as if looking at something in your palm.) He could not see things far away. (Motion into the distance and then lay binoculars down.) (Pick up the Bible.) The man was born blind. He had never seen a flower, the sky, a mountain, or even his mom and dad. One day Jesus and His disciples walked by the man. The disciples asked Jesus why the man could not see. Jesus answered that the man was blind so that people could see God s power! Listen to what Jesus did next. (Open Bible and read John 9:6-7a.) After Jesus said these things he spit on the ground, made some mud and spread the mud on the man s eyes. Go, [Jesus] told him, wash in the pool of Siloam. Can you believe that? Jesus made mud and spread it on the man s eyes! The man did what Jesus said. He went to the pool of Siloam and washed the mud off his eyes. Suddenly, the man could see! When the people in town saw the man, they were confused. They said, Isn t that the same man who was blind? Some men said, Yes, he is the one. Others said, No, this man just looks like him. The man told them over and over, I am the one who was blind! Then the man told the people what happened. BIBLE STUDY LEADER (Show Bible Story slide.) (Pick up binoculars.) Do you know what these are? These are binoculars. I can look through my binoculars and see things that are far away. I could see a squirrel playing in a tree, or I could watch a baseball game from waaaaayyyy up in the stands. (Put the binoculars to your eyes and look around with them.) (Open Bible and read John 9:11.) The man answered, The man called Jesus made mud, spread it on my eyes, and told me, Go to Siloam and wash. So when I went and washed I could see. The people in town asked where Jesus went, and the leaders asked many questions. Some of the leaders did not like that Jesus healed the man. The man who had been blind told them that Jesus was from God. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE PRESCHOOL WORSHIP UNIT 1 SESSION 3 5

9 PRESCHOOL (Open Bible and read John 9:25b.) The man answered One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I can see! (Show Christ Focus slide.) Jesus is special. Jesus did miracles to show the power of God. He healed people who were sick or injured because He loved them. Jesus healed the blind man! (Pick up binoculars.) Now the man could see the sun, sky, ground, and all the people around him. Worship Optional Giving Segment: We can use our hands to play an instrument and to give an offering. Some of the money people give at church helps others know that Jesus loves and helps people. If you would like to give an offering today,. (Give your own directions for how the kids can give their offerings. After collecting the offering, guide kids to stand for the remainder of the worship song.) Jesus helps people! Jesus helped people when He was on the earth, and Jesus still helps people today! We can ask Jesus to help us when we are scared or upset. We can ask Jesus to help us when we are worried or sick. Jesus loves us and can help us! Let s pray and thank God for helping us. God, thank You that Jesus made the blind man well. Thank You for eyes to see! Thank You for helping us and hearing us when we pray. We love You. In Jesus name we pray, amen. What instrument did you hear? (Allow for responses.) Great job, everyone! Close your eyes again, and let s try another one. (Continue the game as your time allows. Play a different instrument each round.) God gave us ears to hear, eyes to see, and voices to sing! Let s play instruments again as we sing. (Distribute the instruments. Encourage preschoolers to play and sing.) Invite kids to say the verse with you. Ask: What is a way that you help at home? Lead kids to say the Bible verse and act out the way to help. (For example, say the verse while pretending to sweep.) Allow several kids to give suggestions and act out each. Play again. Ask: What is a way that you help at church? (For example, say the verse and pretend to pick up toys.) Trey s parents are missionaries in Ghana. His parents are busy just like yours! His mom is a doctor, and his dad is a photographer. They talk to people about Jesus while they are at work. Let s pray for Trey s family and for the people who live in Ghana. God, thank You for the Haun family. Thank You that they are telling people in Ghana about Jesus! We pray that the people the Hauns talk to will know that You love them and can help them! In Jesus name we pray, amen. Jesus can help people. Let s say that together: Jesus can help people. Let s name five ways Jesus helps us. Hold up your hand and help me count to five with your fingers. (Lead kids to count up on fingers as you mention each of the following.) One Jesus helps me grow. Can you think of some other ways Jesus helps you? (Allow for responses.) Jesus gave you a family to take care of you. Jesus created food for you to eat. Jesus gave you a church and friends to learn Bible stories together! I m glad that Jesus loves people and can help them. It makes me happy that you came to church today! Jesus healed a man who was born blind so that He could display the greatness and glory of God, the One who sent Him. LIVE IT OUT Worship Review today s Bible story with your child. Remind your child that Jesus helped the blind man by giving him the ability to see. Explain that Jesus showed God s power by helping people. Pray, thanking Jesus for helping people. Jesus Healed a Man Born Blind JOHN 9:1-34 One day Jesus and His disciples saw a blind man. The man had never been able to see anything in his entire life. The disciples asked Jesus about the man. Jesus spat on the ground to make mud out of the dirt. He gently put the mud on the man s eyes. Jesus told the blind man to go wash in a certain pool. The man did what Jesus said. He could see! He was not blind! Isn t that the man who was blind? some people said. Others said, It must be someone who looks like him. The man said, No, it is me! The man explained what Jesus did. The leaders talked to the man. The man told them what Jesus did. The leaders talked to the man s parents. We know he was blind but now he can see, the parents said. Ask him what happened. The leaders asked the man again. The man said that Jesus did it. I know I was blind and now I see! Jesus must be from God. This is something only God could do.
