1 Bethel Wesleyan Church Bethel Wesleyan Church exists to love our community and world with Christ's love, offering everyone His fulfilling way of life. Unconscious Incompetence 2. Conscious Incompetence 3. Conscious Competence 4. Unconscious Competence **** At what Stage of Discipleship are You? As we follow Jesus and His disciples to Jerusalem, we are confronted by sharp contrasts between what Jesus came to accomplish and what His disciples perceived His mission to be. While Jesus was predicting suffering and death, His disciples were arguing about being the greatest (Luke 9:43-48). While Jesus was preparing to hang on the cross, His disciples sought places of honor at his right and left (Mark 10:35-37). And while Jesus agonized in prayer at Gethsemane, His disciples slept (Matthew 26:36-46). Somehow, these followers of Jesus who had lived in such close proximity to Him for the last three years, were still fairly clueless when it came to Jesus mission and ministry. Take Peter for example. Jesus takes a poll of His disciples and asks, Who do you say that I am? Peter raises his hand and responds, You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God. Jesus applauds Peter s answer and says, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah come sit at the front of the class (Matthew 16:15-17). Like a C student who finally gets the answer right, Peter was on top of the world and must have felt pretty good about himself. Perhaps too good, for in just a few short verses Peter goes from being at the top of his class to persona non-grata. After affirming that He was indeed the much anticipated Messiah, the Savior of the world, Jesus begins to talk about the events that would soon unfold in Jerusalem including His suffering and death. Peter again speaks up and says, Never, Lord! This shall never happen to you! To which Jesus immediately responds, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me. (Matthew 16:21-23). (Continued on page 2)
2 (Continued from page 1 ~ The Stages of Discipleship) How does a person go from making the greatest statement of faith ever to receiving one of the harshest rebukes ever to come out of Jesus mouth? From star student to Satan s sidekick in a matter of moments? I think the answer lies in The Stages of Discipleship that pastor and author Mike Breen identifies below: The Stages of Discipleship: 1. "Unconscious Incompetence" - we don't know what we don't know about God and being a follower of Christ: I believe this stage of disciples best explains Peter s and the other disciples actions and attitudes at this point in Jesus ministry. It was not until after His death and resurrection that they began to fully understand Jesus mission and their role as His disciples. 2. "Conscious Incompetence" - we come to a place where we realize our lives do not measure up to Christ's example. This is where heart change takes place and where we humble ourselves before the Lord and allow Him to lift us up: Following His resurrection, Jesus takes Peter aside and not only restores Him to his place in the class, but assigns him the task of caring for His disciple. However, Jesus commands Peter and the disciples to stay in Jerusalem until much needed help arrives in the form of the Holy Spirit. 3. "Conscious Competence" - we begin through the help of the Holy Spirit to take on the character of Christ. Like learning to walk or ride a bike, we are very conscious of every step: The Holy Spirit is poured out upon Peter and the other disciples on the Day of Pentecost enabling them to preach with authority, heal the sick, and withstand persecution. Each new challenge brings success through the Holy Spirit and results in greater competence. 4. "Unconscious Competence" after following Christ and living according to His example, we come to a place where we live out His character without even thinking about it. His character is a natural part of our existence: By the time Peter writes his letters to the church, he s a natural. He even encourages others in their process of discipleship by saying, Jesus is your example, and you must follow in His steps (1 Peter 2:21). At what Stage of Discipleship are you? Where do you need the help of the Holy Spirit to become more like Jesus in character and conduct? Like Peter, we are all works in progress. Jesus isn t finished with us yet. So what is Jesus asking you to do today? And What are you going to do about it? Page 2

4 Mission Moment Hello, everyone! Well, I'm back in the U.S.! Seeing my MK's in Central Asia was a wonderful time. I think we were mutually blessed as I loved spending time with their kids, and they knew that the girls were well taken care of and having fun, too! I got to help plan a Frozen birthday party, volunteer at their international school, build a doll house, read Narnia, bake cookies and talk after school, go out for a fun day with cotton candy and the carousel, and just in general love on the girls while their parents were away for meetings. It was also great to hear from them how they appreciated how I have been a part of Global Partners MK care the past three years, and to know I'm part of their lives. Thank you all for being a part of making those MK's feel loved and cared for! Becca Burgos Ministry to Missionary Kids Right before I came back to the U.S. I helped my friend out at their Campus Crusade conference in Spain. I ran the middle school/teen program for the week. The four boys had all recently moved overseas, so it was awesome to be able to share with them some of the ups and downs of my transition when I was younger. We talked about how there are good and hard parts, but also how God loves them and has not just a good, but the best plan for them. These next few months, I get the chance to work with a teen girl who is about to move overseas. Already in this first week, we've talked about some of what she's been going through prior to this move. I am hoping to help her learn how to say goodbye well and process through some of the grief involved with that, as well as help her to be excited for what God has in store in this coming year! Thank you for caring about the MK's and choosing to touch them through me! God Bless! Becca Burgos Ministry to MK's PS: To broaden her work with Missionary Kids, Becca Burgos has transitioned from Global Partners to Interlink Ministries, Inc. If you have any questions or would just like to reach out to her, please Becca at: burgosrebecca@gmail.com. PLEASE SAVE CANS & CANCELLED STAMPS TO SUPPORT OUR MISSIONARIES Please give your Cancelled Stamps to Mary Sard.
