Page2 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions Message: Each time you participate in the Lord s Supper remember Him. John 13 ~ Jesus Washes His Disciples Feet It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world. It was time for him to go to the Father. Jesus loved his disciples who were in the world. So he now showed them how much he really loved them. 2 The evening meal was being served. The devil had already tempted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. He had told Judas to hand Jesus over to his enemies. 3 Jesus knew that the Father had put everything under his power. He also knew he had come from God and was returning to God. 4 So he got up from the meal and took off his outer clothes. He wrapped a towel around his waist. 5 After that, he poured water into a large bowl. Then he began to wash his disciples feet. He dried them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6 He came to Simon Peter. Lord, Peter said to him, are you going to wash my feet? 7 Jesus replied, You don t realize now what I am doing. But later you will understand. 8 No, said Peter. You will never wash my feet. Jesus answered, Unless I wash you, you can t share life with me. 9 Lord, Simon Peter replied, not just my feet! Wash my hands and my head too! 10 Jesus answered, A person who has had a bath needs to wash only his feet. The rest of his body is clean. And you are clean. But not all of you are. 11 Jesus knew who was going to hand him over to his enemies. That was why he said not everyone was clean. 12 When Jesus finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes. Then he returned to his place. Do you understand what I have done for you? he asked them. 13 You call me Teacher and Lord. You are right. That is what I am. 14 I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet. So you also should wash one another s feet. 15 I have given you an example. You should do as I have done for you. 16 What I m about to tell you is true. A servant is not more important than his master. And a messenger is not more important than the one who sends him. 17 Now you know these things. So you will be blessed if you do them. Matthew 26:17-30 ~ The Lord s Supper 17 It was the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. The disciples came to Jesus. They asked, Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover meal? 18 He replied, Go into the city to a certain man. Tell him, The Teacher says, My time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover at your house with my disciples. 19 So the disciples did what Jesus had told them to do. They prepared the Passover meal. 20 When evening came, Jesus was at the table with the Twelve. 21 While they were eating, he said, What I m about to tell you is true. One of you will hand me over to my enemies. 22 The disciples became very sad. One after the other, they began to say to him, It s not I, Lord, is it? 23 Jesus replied, The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will hand me over. 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who hands over the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born. 25 Judas was the one who was going to hand him over. He said, It s not I, Rabbi, is it? Jesus answered, Yes. It is you.

Page3 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions - Continued 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to his disciples and said, Take this and eat it. This is my body. 27 Then he took the cup. He gave thanks and handed it to them. He said, All of you drink from it. 28 This is my blood of the new covenant. It is poured out to forgive the sins of many. 29 Here is what I tell you. From now on, I won t drink wine with you again until the day I drink it with you in my Father s kingdom. 30 Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives. The Last Supper 7 Then the day of Unleavened Bread came. That was the time the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8 Jesus sent Peter and John on ahead. Go, he told them. Prepare for us to eat the Passover meal. 9 Where do you want us to prepare for it? they asked. 10 Jesus replied, When you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house he enters. 11 Then say to the owner of the house, The Teacher asks, Where is the guest room? Where can I eat the Passover meal with my disciples? 12 He will show you a large upstairs room with furniture in it. Prepare for us to eat there. 13 Peter and John left. They found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover meal. 14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles took their places at the table. 15 He said to them, I have really looked forward to eating this Passover meal with you. I wanted to do this before I suffer. 16 I tell you, I will not eat the Passover meal again until it is celebrated in God s kingdom. 17 After Jesus took the cup, he gave thanks. He said, Take this cup and share it among yourselves. 18 I tell you, I will not drink wine with you again until God s kingdom comes. 19 Then Jesus took bread. He gave thanks and broke it. He handed it to them and said, This is my body. It is given for you. Every time you eat it, do it in memory of me. 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup. He said, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. It is poured out for you. Discussion Questions: 1. Why did people have their feet washed in Jesus' day? (They got dirty from walking on dusty roads.) 2. Who normally washed the feet of visitors? (Servants.) 3. Why do you think Jesus washed his Disciples' feet? (Discuss together. To show the greatest way to please God is by serving others.) 4. What was the Passover that the people celebrated in Jesus' time? (When the angel of death passed over the homes of the Israelites after they painted their doorposts with the blood from a lamb.) 5. What represents the shedding of Jesus' blood when we celebrate communion? (The red drops of wine on the communion wafer.) 6. What does the communion wafer represent when we celebrate communion? (Jesus' body on the cross.) 7. What are remembering as we celebrate Holy Communion? (We remember the death of Jesus and His suffering. We also remember how Jesus taught His disciples to celebrate Holy Communion as well as Jesus resurrection from death and His ascension into Heaven.) 8. What event in the future should we think about when we celebrate Holy Communion? (We look forward to Jesus return when we celebrate Holy Communion, and remember that celebrating Holy Communion is necessary to prepare for that Day.) 9. What does it mean to profess something? (To declare openly; announce or affirm, or acknowledge.)

Page4 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions - Continued Discussion Questions Continued: 10. What do you think we profess when take part in celebrating Holy Communion? (We acknowledge Jesus death, resurrection and His return. We also profess our faith in Jesus and His Apostles as we celebrate Holy Communion.) 11. Who do we have fellowship with as we celebrate Holy Communion? (When we celebrate Holy Communion we have fellowship with Jesus Himself, and with each other as those who also believe in the Lord Jesus, His life, death, resurrection and ascension. When we celebrate Holy Communion it allows us to have the closest fellowship with the Lord Jesus.) Application to Real Life Enjoy a snack together as you continue the discussion with the following activity. You might consider having grape juice and bread for a snack, to coincide with today s lesson. A Few of My Favorite Things: Share with your class a favorite food or meal that you enjoy. Explain what memory or circumstance in your life makes this meal an enjoyable one for you. Allow some of your class to share some of their favorite foods or meals (possibly sharing their homework assignment). Ask why these meals are significant to them. Explain to your class that God knew that the memory of His faithfulness in our lives would be more easily remembered if it was associated with what we do every day, what we must do to survive...eat! We have an opportunity to thank God for His faithfulness every time we sit down to a meal. The Lord s Supper commemorates the Passover meal Jesus ate with His disciples. We celebrate (and call it) Communion because through it we commune with God and with other believers. As we eat the bread and drink the wine, we should be quietly reflective as we recall Jesus death and His promise to come again. Each time you participate in the Lord s Supper, REMEMBER HIM. (Message Statement.) Memory Work Fun 1. Recite the memory verse. 2. Practice finding the memory verse and/or Bible text in the Bible! 3. Who can tell the events that happened on Palm Sunday from memory? 4. Lead the class in a short prayer, thanking God that we have the opportunity to still have fellowship with Him today when we celebrate the Lord s Supper in each divine service.

Page5 Activity Ideas Choose One All Ages Breaking Bread Activity This would be a great activity to do as you go over the lesson and discussion questions. See: Grade School Activities Breaking Bread You will need a large flat sheet or picnic blanket, a small bucket to wash feet or hands, several towels to dry feet or hands, napkins, paper plates, cups, juice, and a loaf of unsliced bread for this activity. (You may wish to also have cheese, crackers and fruit, but this is optional). You will celebrate the feast of the Passover and bring to life what happened when Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples. Please see the above website for detailed instructions. Grades K-2 The Last Supper Craft Tell the children that when Jesus began His ministry, He picked twelve men, or disciples, to follow Him. The disciples were ordinary men with common flaws, but Jesus lovingly poured wisdom and biblical teachings into their hearts and minds. At the Last Supper, Jesus broke bread and celebrated the Passover feast around the table with his twelve disciples. You will need cardstock, glue or tape, jumbo craft sticks, markers, and smiley face stickers for this activity. Use the cardstock to pre-cut enough tables (rectangles) so that each child has one. (Each table needs to be long enough to fit 13 jumbo craft sticks across the table.) Write the memory verse along the bottom of the table before class. Make a set of 13 crafts sticks for each child ahead of time (keep each set separated in its own plastic bag). For each set write the following names on the craft sticks (one on each stick): Peter, Andrew, James, John, Matthew, Philip, Bartholomew, Thomas, James, Thaddaeus, Simon, Judas Iscariot, and Jesus. Leave room at the top of each stick for the children to place a small smiley face sticker (different colors would work best) on the end. The children will need draw what goes on the table (bread, wine, plates, etc.) When their table is ready, help the children glue or tape the craft stick disciples on the back side of the table with their faces showing towards the table that was decorated. Remember to keep the conversation going as you work. do this in remembrance of me. --Luke 22:19 Grades 3-5 The Last Supper Crossword Puzzle See: Grade School Puzzles The Last Supper You will need to make copies of the crossword puzzle sheet for each child. Have the children work with a partner to look up Mark 14:13-26 in their Bibles and complete the crossword puzzle. Please see the above website for detailed instructions.

Page6 Journal Optional Grades K-2 Draw a picture of your favorite part of today s lesson. Why is it you favorite? Grades 3-5 Do you think it is important for us to remember Jesus and what He did for us? Why or why not? Write about it. Homework Ideas - Read at home with a grown up the lesson about The Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:39-65). - Learn the memory verse: The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. --James 5:16 (NLT) - Work on memorizing commandment #. - Color the picture titled The Garden of Gethsemane. Bring it to class for a sticker. - Do you have a special place where you can feel as if you were close to God? Where is it? Draw a picture of that place and bring it to class to share. 8 Page8 Take Home Page: The Last Supper Today I learned Today your child learned that whenever we participate in Holy Communion (the Lord s Supper) we should remember Jesus and what He did for us. Children explored what happened at the Last Supper with the Lord Jesus. They also talked about why we continue to celebrate the Lord s Supper today. Help me learn my memory verse do this in remembrance of Me. --Luke 22:19 Ask me 1. What happened at the Last Supper with Jesus? 2. Why do you think Jesus washed the disciples feet? 3. When do we celebrate the Lord s Supper today? Live Your Faith Re-create the last supper at home with your children. Provide a bowl of water for washing feet, and fresh bread and grape juice for eating/drinking. (You could also look up what else the Jewish people might have eaten at the Passover meal and explore some of that food with your family.) After you bless the food, talk about the sacrifice that the Lord Jesus was about to make for us as you eat. Allow each one to share how that makes him/her feel about Jesus, in light of such a sacrifice.
