Jesus said, I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10 Pastor s Pen O c t o b e r N e w s l e t t e r Goldsboro Bethel Wesleyan Church Bethel Wesleyan Church exists to love our community and world with Christ's love, offering everyone His fulfilling way of lif e. Tearing Down Walls of Hostility A Presidential United Nations Speech! A Supreme Court Confirmation Hearing! An African-American Teen Dies in Police Custody! What do all these events have in common besides being current issues facing our world today? They all have the potential of building up walls of hostility. Volume 11, Issue 9 Inside This Issue Pastor s Pen ~ Tearing Down Walls of Hostility Pastor s Pen ~ Tearing Down Walls of Hostility Power Kids God s Prescription Youth Ministry Mission Moment - The Thedes - Haiti 5 President Trump told the international community in no uncertain terms that America is rejecting the ideology of globalism and embracing the doctrine of patriotism. In other words, America s interests will take precedence over world issues and America s sovereignty will no longer be hindered by international bureaucracy. While applauded by many America First advocates, this stance has the potential of building a wall of hostility between us (America) and them (the rest of the world). In the process of being confirmed by the Senate Judiciary committee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been accused of sexually assaulting Dr. Christine Blasey Ford when they were both students in high school. The September 27 th hearing of these two compelling witnesses has left America divided between male and female, Democrat and Republican, conservative and Getting to Know BWC ~ Paul McMullen & Buck Schuyler Getting to BWC ~ Cheryl Jones Denton Camp Men s Retreat BWC Giving Receipts OASIS A Soul Winner s Revival Brochure FALL-O-WEEN 10 Kira Scherbakova In Concert Beautifully Brave Love in a Shoebox Church Work Day Harvest Party Belonging Classes Digital Families: 2018 Fall Series Calendar (Continued on page 2)

(Continued from page 1 ~ Tearing Down Walls of Hostility) liberal, with no conclusive evidence one way or the other. As the hearing wore on, it was not hard to see the wall of hostility rising even higher between these groups, which continues to bring deep division within our own nation. On Saturday, September 15, an African-American teen ran from the police in Greensboro, Maryland after being spotted dragging a minor down the street. A pursuit ensued. An arrest was made after great resistance. And then a medical episode requiring CPR and the administration of NARCAN, resulted in the teen s death. Now the family blames the police. And again, we see the walls of hostility being erected between police and community, and between black and white. Candlelight Service for Anton Black Where does it all end? Division isn t anything new. Dividing walls of hostility existed in Jesus day between Jew and Gentile, between slave and free, between male and female. But Jesus saw past these walls and taught His disciples to do the same. He taught us that a house is divided against itself... cannot stand (Mark 3:25). He actively sought to break down the dividing walls of hostility. We see this when he chose to travel through Samaria rather than around it and encountered the women at the well (John 4). We see this when he responded mercifully to the Syrophoenician woman and healed her daughter (Matthew 15:21-28). We see this when he commended the faith of the Roman Centurion and healed his servant (Matthew 8:5-13). Even while he was ministering to his own people, Jesus had an eye to the whole world. As citizens of this nation, we may want our leaders to put America first, but as citizens of heaven we serve a King who puts the world first. He so loved the world that he laid down his life for all humankind. We may be conflicted on who to believe in the recent judicial hearing, but in God s kingdom we are all sinners saved by grace, and the ground is always level at the foot of the cross. And while the cause of the teen s death has yet to be determined, as followers of Christ we believe ALL LIVES MATTER. And so, we grieve with the family, we support our police, and we pray for healing and restoration in this midst of this tragedy. I am so proud of what God is doing through the North Caroline Clergy Association. Pastors and churches working together, despite their differences, to see God s Kingdom come and God s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. This group epitomizes what Paul writes in Galatians 3 and Ephesians 2: So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, (Continued on page 3) P a g e 2

(Continued from page 2 ~ Tearing Walls of Hostility) neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s seed, and heirs according to the promise (Galatians 3:26-29). For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility... (Ephesians 2:14). May God help us all, in this day of division, to be people of His peace, who rely upon His presence as we actively proclaim North Caroline Clergy Association His power to destroy barriers and to tear down the dividing walls of hostility. May our prayer be that of St. Francis of Assissi who said: Lord make me an instrument of your peace Where there is hatred let me sow love Where there is injury, pardon Where there is doubt, faith Where there is despair, hope Where there is darkness, light And where there is sadness, joy O divine master grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console to be understood as to understand To be loved as to love For it is in giving that we receive it is in pardoning that we are pardoned And it's in dying that we are born to eternal life Amen Pictured in NCCA photo from left to right, front to back: Row 1: Pastor Thomas Fisher - Abram's Memorial Church in Denton; Pastor Paul Twining - National Day of Prayer Coordinator Row 2: Pastor Paul Merritt - Denton Church of the Nazarene; Pastor Phyllis Duckery - Jericho Faith Deliverance in Ridgely; Pastor Doug Morley - Goldsboro Bethel Wesleyan Church; Father John Gabage - St. Benedict's in Ridgely & St. Elizabeth's in Denton Row 3: Pastor Mike Trott - Denton Church of the Brethren; Pastor Denzil Cheek - retired; Elder David Jones - Denton Seventh Day Adventist Church Not Pictured: Pastor Jeff Donihue - Wayside Church of Christ in Christian Union; Pastor Howard Embert - Trinity Goldsboro- Henderson United Methodist Charge; Pastor Karen Handy - St. Luke's United Methodist in Denton; Pastor Terry Nichols - Denton Seventh Day Adventist; Pastor Don Reynolds - Calvary Baptist Church in Denton; Pastor George Simmons - St. Paul's United Methodist in Greensboro; Pastor Blake Wamester - Christ Episcopal Church in Denton. 5 Mission Moment Global Partners Missionaries global partnersonline.org Dear Bethel Wesleyan, August 2018 Having shared with 19 churches this summer about God s faithfulness, our gratitude continues to strengthen. You may think that it would get old sharing week after week but the Lord continues to sustain us and I continue to marvel afresh how much He cares and the great support team He s put in place for us. Thank you for being part of that team. Our thoughts now transition to getting Anna and Eli settled in at Calvin College and wondering when we will be able to return to Haiti. We continue to pray and wait to hear about Fritzlin s American citizenship application... But even during uncertain times we know that the Lord knows the future and we continue to trust in His timing and plan. UPDATE: THEDE CONNECTION, SEPTEMBER 24, MONDAY ON THE MOUNTAIN! (BACK IN HAITI) House just to the right of center We made it up the mountain without any problems on Friday. We started at 7 a.m. and finished at 6 p.m. About all we did was unload some of our bags, set up our beds, ate a bit of supper and went to bed. On Saturday we started to organize and move stuff... We hiked to the neighbor s Saturday afternoon to connect on internet and get some drinking water. We continued unpacking and hung our bedroom curtains, as the full moon kept tricking us into thinking dawn was coming. Sunday, Cory couldn t get our small generator to run - to treat more drinking water with our ultra-violet filter. So Kris went to the neighbor for water and downloaded s, messaged with Mom and Eli a few minutes. Hard rain last night so we identified where the roof leaks. Then I had a medical consultation, gave care, prayed, and advised to go down the mountain for additional treatment and testing. Heard today that the patient was brought down for care. Having no electric and no internet at the house means that we go to bed earlier. So we are getting caught up on sleep. This morning we were up continuing to organize the house. After setting up some office space Fritzlin and I did our school work. Cory did get the generator working and treated water. Tomorrow he plans to head to Port-au- Prince to shop for items needed to get our power system and stove working. Fritzlin and I will do school and continue to organize. First Sunset Home P a g e 5 The Thedes serve the Haitian people, engage in their everyday life, and provide agricultural, medical, and spiritual resources and training. Equipping and encouraging communities to better their lives and the lives of others results in entire communities being impacted for Christ. Ultimately, Cory and Kris strive to glorify God in all they do. for the equipping of the saints, for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ (Ephesians 4:12 NASB).

Getting to Know BWC ~ Cheryl Jones Cindy Gage Boller & Cheryl Jones Lifelong Friends Cheryl Jones, the eldest daughter of Bill and Virginia Jones, was born in Wilmington, Delaware. She has three younger brothers and two younger sisters. She lived in Harrington, DE until August 1968 when her family moved to Greensboro, MD. In April 1986, after attending United Wesleyan College in Allentown, PA for 2 years (from Fall 1981 until graduation in May 1983) Cheryl bought her house at 214 East Sunset Avenue in Greensboro where she now resides. She is a member of a large family including 24 cousins on her mother s side and 15 nieces and nephews! Cheryl works in her family s Heating and Cooling business where she has a variety of responsibilities. Other activities include Chair of the Greensboro Planning and Zoning Commission for 25+ years, Treasurer for the Greensboro Business & Civic Association, Treasurer for Chesapeake District Children s Ministry, and Secretary of BWC s Local Board of Administration. Traveling, yard work, and playing the guitar and singing are some of Cheryl s favorite things to do. She also enjoys eating crabs and eating out at diners. Her favorite color is yellow, especially yellow flowers, such as roses, forsythia, irises and tulips. Cheryl has attended BWC since she was about six months old. In her testimony she states, I gave my heart to Jesus at around 6 or 7 years old. I was baptized at Williston Lake at around 12 years old. I rededicated my life to Christ as a teenager at Youth Camp. As I was growing up, we were always at church if the door was open. We also went to area churches when they had revival services. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to sit under a lot of good preachers throughout my life. My 2 years at United Wesleyan College opened my heart and mind to many things of God. His abiding presence is the greatest comfort to me. I am learning to trust Him more for things I do not understand and cannot change, and to listen more closely to what He expects me to do. Cheryl s favorite hymn is He Abides. Her favorite Bible Verse is Romans 8: No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Cheryl has a deep love for children and has been involved in the children s ministry most of her adult life. She currently teaches our pre-kindergarten/kindergarten Sunday school class. Besides her service as secretary on the Local Board of Administration, Cheryl is also an experienced sound technician and helps lead worship most Sundays. We are thankful to Cheryl and all who use their gifts and abilities in service to God and His kingdom. P a g e 7

BWC - Fall-O-Ween 2018 Wednesday, October 31st We're very excited for this year's Fall-O-Ween! Our 2017 Falloween was definitely a success. Held on Halloween, our 6 pm starting time was a whirlwind with people actually arriving prior to 6 pm. BWC was a witness to the Goldsboro community by providing a safe and family friendly alternative to the traditional "Trick or Treating." Not only did we provide the 'Trunk or Treat,' kids decorated pumpkins, learned about David and the giant Goliath, voted on best carved pumpkin, and we managed to serve dinner and dessert. Everyone pulled through that day and made it work and I applaud each and every one of you! Thank you for your service. Fall-O-Ween 2018 won't have too many changes but will be here before we know it. Please consider the list below and see Nikki Jones or Lori Richard to sign up so we can get planning! Thank you in advance for your contributions! Items Needed: Crock pots of Chili Hot Dogs Bagged Chips Bags of Cheese Sour Cream Cookies/Cupcakes/Desserts Boxes of Hot Chocolate Capri Suns/ Kids Drinks Other Needs: Decorate your car & hand out candy (candy is provided by you) Join Set-Up Crew Join Clean-Up Crew Donate money to use for supplies. (Please put in offering envelope designated Fall-O-Ween) Pray that God will bless this event and do amazing things! Also pray for the children that enter our doors, that they would be open to His Word. This outreach is definitely growing. I know many of us are short on time so if we all pitch in and participate, Fall-O-Ween 2018 will be a success! Please be in prayer that God would guide BWC and give us wisdom as we make preparations.
