2 From Your Moderator Carroll Rinker When you think of stewardship, what comes to mind? Maybe fundraising or a capital campaign. Possibly taking care of the environment. Or maybe you think it s just a stale old word you ve heard in church. Maybe, if you re being honest, you re not really sure what it means. The reality is that many people today, including lots of Christians, don t understand the true meaning of stewardship. And that s a tragedy. Why? Because stewardship is our ultimate calling as Christ followers. It s the first assignment God gave the human race in Genesis 1:28. That s when God told Adam and Eve to Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. (NIV). Stewardship is managing God's blessings God's ways for Gods' glory. See, the Bible tells us in Psalm 24:1 that He owns it all: The earth is the Lord s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; (NIV). And if He s the owner, that means we re not. Instead, we re His stewards His managers. God commands us to be stewards over everything He blesses us with. Everything. That means our time, talents, treasure, relationships, jobs and, yes, stuff. It s all God s, and He trusts us with it. Stewardship is managing God s blessings God s ways for God s glory. The kids are back in school. The weekenders are decreasing in numbers. The opportunities for boat rides will get less and less as the month of September passes. The air will turn cooler and the leaves on the trees will begin to turn colors and fall off. This is a cycle that repeats year after year. These cycles give us comfort and security. It is good to know that we can count on certain things to happen year after year. Our church cycles are comforting. We know that certain rituals will happen on Sunday morning. We know that certain religious holy days will be celebrated. We know we will gather for Fellowship dinners once a month. We know that we will see certain people every Sunday. All these things are good. But it is in the discrepant events that we grow as Christians and humans. When a routine is broken, when the power is out, when holes in a parking lot need to be filled, when a water line breaks, when no one is there to teach Sunday School, when your best friend falls ill..that is when we find out what we are made of as individuals and institutions. That is when we need to step up to fill the need. Look for those opportunities. What will you do in God s service? Reprinted from the internet We grow up when we see our life and our role from God s perspective; when we thank God for the role he has assigned us and begin to see our cup as a gift instead of a cross; when each morning we ask, God, how can I glorify you today in my given role? Linda Dillow, Calm My Anxious Heart BOARD MEETING THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 13, 11:00 A.M. 2

3 Applying Bible Principles September Christian Male peacocks are interesting creatures. They love to be noticed, so they spread their bright plumage for any and all to see (especially female peacocks!). Many people are like that, especially when it comes to their financial support of the Lord s work. They want people to notice their act of giving, when they give, how much they give, and the causes to which they give. Some even announce publicly how much they give, supposedly to challenge others to follow their pattern of generosity. But is that God s way? A simple examination of the sixth chapter of Matthew s gospel reveals the answer. The Lord Jesus said that our giving is to be done secretly. If we take His instruction at face value, then it is apparent that we are not to let others know the extent of our giving. In fact, Jesus went so far as to say (figuratively, of course) that we shouldn t even let one hand know what the other is doing when it comes to our giving. Sometimes, our giving will be seen by men. Sometimes, that s unavoidable. But Christ s point concerns our motive. We should give to please our Lord, not in order to be seen by other people so that we receive their commendation or accolades. In other words, we are to avoid what one writer described as advertised piety. A well-known evangelist said that the world has yet to see what could be accomplished for the sake of the gospel if we would quit being concerned about who gets the credit for what gets done in the kingdom of God. That includes our giving. In fact, one of the greatest tests for us as God s children is whether we are able to give cheerfully of ourselves and our resources without getting the credit. Unless we give by cash and choose to forgo a tax deduction for our giving (hmm... now there s a novel idea!), probably the person who handles the church s financial affairs will be aware of our giving. Otherwise, though, it s a good idea to keep our giving a matter that s between ourselves and the Lord. Actually, it s more than a good idea. It s something Christ said we should do.... September! My favorite month of the year with the beginning of fall and all the beautiful leaves and colors changing to prepare for winter, GOD has his hands in it all. 5 CHURCH GROWTH SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 Come join us for a great dinner but most of all good fellowship! Bring a favorite dish to share with one another at our once a month dinner with friends! Held after the Sunday Worship in the Loehr Center (downstairs). Dinner for 8 Sunday October 7, 2018 Save the date! Sign-up in September. Dinner for 8 is an evening when a group of folks from the church (8 or less) gather to share good food and fellowship in a host home. It is an excellent opportunity to get to know folks you might not know well yet. Experienced participants say this is where they got better acquainted with individuals they otherwise might not know well. How it works: There will be sign up form in the entry in September. Sign up to participate and indicate if you would be willing to be a host home. Hosts provide the main dish and beverages and contact their assigned guests about what to bring; appetizers, salad, side dish or dessert. All couples and individuals are encouraged to sign up! Questions, call Norma Johnson Special Dates Labor Day, September 3, 2018 National Grandparents Day, September 9, 2018 Patriot Day, September 11, 2018 Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 Oct. 15, 2018 First day of autumn, September 22, 2018 Extreme Makeover Divine Design God Wants to Do an 'Extreme Makeover' in Your Life I always hated reality TV shows. Then, several years ago, I discovered the popular reality show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and I instantly loved it. For those who haven t seen it, the theme of the show is to find a family that is facing a very difficult hardship and then to provide home improvements that would specifically meet their needs and preferences. The most touching part of the show was when the family took a tour of their new house for the first time and discovered all of the personal touches that had been added for each of them. I think I cried the first time I watched it. Later, I remember thinking why are we so fascinated by the makeover process? I think it s because we all love to see positive change. Not only this, but I also think our curiosity is riveted by the skill and creativity involved in making the old, new, and the broken, whole, and taking the unbeautiful and making it beautiful. But, most of all, I think it s because all of us secretly long for an extreme makeover in some area of our lives or relationships. Rooted in the spiritual DNA of our hearts is a longing to be different, to be healed, and to take a broken relationship and make it whole. Perhaps the ultimate extreme makeover is when Jesus Christ takes over and works in a human heart, taking that which is broken and fixes it. God s desire is to do an extreme makeover a relational, emotional and internal transformation -- in every man, woman and child on this planet. And the way He wants to do this is through his son, Jesus. So, why does God do it? Extreme makeovers are done by God alone, and not by our own self-efforts. He does them so that we can see the riches of the kindness of his grace demonstrated in Christ. For we are God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. We are the workmanship of God. He wants to regenerate us through our relationship with Jesus in the supernatural community of the Church. Then, He gives us the spiritual gifts and tools we ll need to do the good works that he s already prepared for us to do. 7 Wired Divine Design Do You Know How God Has Uniquely Wired You? God has a dream for your life. He didn't save you just so He could take you to heaven. He has an assignment for you here on earth. He created you in His image, He filled you with His Spirit, and He blessed you with spiritual gifts so you could live a life of impact. But until you know how to recognize and use your gifts, you will never experience all that God wants you to experience. You were meant to discover how He has uniquely wired you and the roles in the body of Christ that He created you to fulfill. Every believer was created to play a strategic role in the body of Christ, with the gifts God has given them. But many of today s Christians face one difficult question: How do I discover my spiritual gifts and then use them effectively in my church? With biblical insight and practical steps, you ll learn how to discover, develop, and deploy your spiritual gifts so you can live a life of greater impact. 9 am Connect room Chip Ingram presenting Kent Elliott facilitator AMERICAN LEGION FASHION SHOW AND LUNCH Monday, September 10, 2018 at 11 a.m. Doors open at 10 a.m. Fashions: KOHLS...CATO...CHRISTOPHER & BANKS Tickets $12 - Please note: ADVANCE SALES ONLY- reserve a table for 8 or more American Legion Auxiliary - Post 624 Lake Road 5-33, Sunrise Beach, MO Contact Cathy Bell (WLCC member) for tickets at From Our Parish Nurse Betty Greenley SEPTEMBER 2018 OVARIAN CANCER LRHS Parish Nurse Network Wellness Tip of the Month Ovarian Cancer WHAT IS IT? 11 +Christian Symbol+ Seal A seal is the mark of God s promises to the believer and of the believer s consecration to God. Old Testament priests wore a piece of gold against their forehead, as a seal, engraved with the words Holy to the Lord. For Christians, the sign of the cross serves as a seal of salvation. Paul declares, He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come (2 Corinthians 1:21-22, NIV).
