1 The Possibili es Are Endless: It s Time for County Wide Growth and Prosperity The Chamber has a long list of outstanding Board Chairmen made up of our local business leaders. I am honored to have been selected to serve as the 2017 Chairman of the Cheyenne County Chamber and join that list. I want to thank Andrew Hurt for his service this past year as the Chairman of the Chamber. We all know it has been a tough year for Andrew and we all wish him well in the coming year. He will con nue to play a very important role in the Chamber as a mentor to our new Board members. Since the 1920 s, the Cheyenne County Chamber has played a big role in represen ng the interests of the business community by promo ng the business and economic environment of our county. Our Mission at the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce, is to Promote an Environment for Business to Grow. We work to develop the tools needed from a Chamber perspec ve, to network, adver se, involve, and promote opportuni es for our member businesses and individuals. The Chamber Board, along with President, Denise Wilkinson, and office staff, Bev Arellano, and Sandy Goble, have worked hard over the past year to make our Chamber even stronger, by re-structuring within, including events, and commi ees. The goal is to focus on more successful events rather than the quan ty of events. The Possibili es Are Endless: It s Time for County Wide Growth and Prosperity. Together as a community, we can work together to bring new business and industry, along with growing our already established businesses. We are looking forward to a produc ve and engaging year for our Chamber and our local businesses. I have been employed by Wheat Belt Public Power District since 2009, and was appointed to the Chamber Board of Director s, in April of Since moving to the community almost eight years ago, I have come to understand how ght the business community is with one another and that the Chamber memberships are valuable to those who choose to be part of this great organiza on. I invite you to par cipate in the Chamber events, and groups. I look forward to working with the Chamber Board of Directors, City and County leaders, and all of our Chamber members to con nue to make Cheyenne County THE place to live, work, and raise a family. Welcome New Board Members Haley Ford, Sidney Regional Medical Center Director of the Walk In Clinic. Haley, a PA, prac ced in Lincoln for a year and growing up not to far away in Bayard, NE, she wanted to be able to raise her family closer to where she grew up. Her family moved to Sco sbluff were she worked for the Quick Care Clinic for 8 years. Haley, her husband, and three children moved to Sidney a year-and-a-half ago where she is the Director for Sidney s Walk-in Clinic. I am pleased to join the Board and find it a great opportunity to help serve the community. I look forward to ge ng to know the community be er and being able to share my experience. John Phillips, Owner of the Fox Theatre John has owned and operated the Fox Theatre in Sidney since John joined the Cheyenne County Chamber about 20 years ago and served on the board for 3 years. John is honored to be asked to serve once again. John believes our community needs to come together in this me of economic uncertainty and he feels the Chamber is the tool to accomplish this. 5 Bev Arellano, with the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce, presented Kim Castner, Table of Grace Mobile Food Pantry, Dress Down Day funds in the amount of $ The funds are going to help the Food Pantry supply holiday meals for their clients. The food Pantry is planning for 70 to 100 meals. Dress Down applica ons can be picked up at the Cheyenne County Chamber or found online at Hope & Robin won $ in Chamber Gi Cer ficates, They visited 10 par cipa ng stores and found the ornament, had then the store clerk stamped, dated, and ini- al their books. Leadership Cheyenne County is off to a great start. JNW consul ng has been the LCC facilitator. Funding for JNW consul ng was provided through a generous grant with the help of Doug Mader of WNCC, and has made this leadership class one of the best we have ever held. Basing our class on the Book, Strengths Based Leadership, the class has held insigh ul discussions on leadership style, including Why People Follow?, Maximizing You Strengths as a Leader, The Best U liza on of Our Strengths, and Understanding and Using the Strengths of Our Team. The classes also include community awareness and involvement. City and County day was held Thursday, December 17. City Manager Ed Sadler started out the day by explaining to the class how Sidney s City Government is structured and how its day-to-day opera ons work. It was very informa ve. Our new Councilwoman, Kelly Utley, spoke to the class as a representa ve of the team who is working with Governor Ricke s and the State of the Nebraska Economic Development group, to highlight the assets of our County, and put together incen ves as the proposed merge of Cabela s with Bass Pro moves forward. It was a great posi ve note for the class to the see the City, County, and State, working together to do all they can do to protect jobs and business in Cheyenne County. The group was able to tour the Waste Water Treatment Plant and get a close-up look at the opera ons and details of the plant. The tour was presented by Todd Sukup and Jason Houk of the City. The classed ended at the Cheyenne County Visitor s Center. Director, Heather Hausmann, gave the group a tour, explained how funding for the Visitor s Center is obtained, and gave an overview of her job du es and goals. The next class is set for Thursday, January 19, and the subject is Human Services Day. In February, the group will be traveling to Lincoln to watch the State of Nebraska Legislature in ac on and meet with public officials, including Governor Pete Ricke s and newly elected Senator, Steve Erdman. 7 5 Reasons to Nominate Someone For a Community Commitment Award We get it. It takes me and brain power which you could use elsewhere. But if you are reading this based on the tle, then chances are you are thinking there is someone you know who deserves an award. So, you should nominate them. Here are the reasons: 1. Likely, they won't brag on themselves. The kind of people who deserve recogni on are o en not the kind to seek it. In fact, they shun it. But, a good dose of apprecia on goes a long way, even when they say they don't want it. 2. We need good role models for our kids. They don't want the recogni on,but we need to have our children see good people being recognized for the good they do. 3. We need to celebrate good people and companies. We need the reminder that we can do more for our communi es than just run a business or just do our jobs. 4. Let's overshadow all the nega ve with the posi ves we have at hand. What is happening in our world na onally and interna- onally has, at its core, nega ves that begin at a community level. We can't build good na ons and good worlds without good communi es. 5. We believe it s important that really great businesses, who are involved in our community, should be recognized. Publicly. Included in the newsle er as a insert is a nomina on form.
