He noticed two empty boats at the water s edge, for the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. Stepping into one of the boats, Jesus asked Simon, its owner, to push it out into the water. So he sat in the boat and taught the crowds from there. When he finished speaking, he said to Simon, Now go out where it is deeper, and let down your nets to catch some fish. Master, Simon replied, we worked hard all last night and didn t catch a thing. But if you say so, I ll let the nets down again. And this time their nets were so full of fish they began to tear! A shout for help brought their partners in the other boat, and soon both boats were filled with fish and on the verge of sinking. 4 First National Conference (Camp) at Estes Park, Colorado Date: August 1956 Posted: November 15, 2013 FCA s first National Conference in 1956 has been called by many the most important event in FCA s history. However, there was some doubt as to whether it would pan out. In fact, FCA founder and executive director Don McClanen had reserved rooms for 500 people (450 high school and college athletes and 50 coaches), but when Gary Demarest, the camp s dean, picked up Branch Rickey at the airport, Demarest was worried the camp would be a bust, noting that as of a month prior, only 38 reservations had been made. Don t forget, Rickey told Demarest on the way from Denver to Estes Park, Jesus started with 12! Demarest continued the story. There were 256 present that night when Mr. Rickey gave the keynote message calling us to bold witness for Christ and the church. Out of that camp grew the network of citywide programs, chapters, Huddles and all the rest that s made FCA national in scope. (From Wayne Atcheson s book, Impact for Christ. ) McClanen willingly stayed behind the scenes as camp director. Since then, FCA Camps have become a staple of FCA s ministry. From the first camp in Estes Park in 1956, when 256 campers attended, FCA Camps have grown to 429 camps in 38 states and 25 countries with an attendance of 59,752 in In 2013, 5,002 campers made a first-time commitment to Christ, and 7,120 more rededicated their lives to Him Texas FCA Summer Camp Dates June 9-13 th Leadership Camp - Hardin Simmons University June th Sports/Leadership Dallas Baptist University June 28 th - July 1 st Sports Camp - Texas Tech University July 3 rd July 6 th Sports Camp - College Texas A&M University July 10 th -13 th Family Camp - La Torretta Lake Resort And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father thru Him.
