3 MAY 4 GALA FAQS WHERE DO I PARK? There is parking across LaSalle Street, just north of the Museum grounds. Your best option is to leave the driving to someone else and take a cab or Uber. We want everyone to be able to celebrate safely! MORE 125 TH... See page 6 for more on how St. Chrys is celebrating our 125th Anniversary Year. St. Chrysostom s Good Shepherds Society Giving Thanks by Giving Back For all that our community means to you and all that it serves, consider making a gift to carry St. Chrysostom s forward. Our Good Shepherds Society honors everyone who makes a planned gift in any amount a bequest through your estate, life insurance, appreciated stock, or other assets. For more information about tax-deductible charitable gifts, contact John Craib-Cox at (312) or Mike Lisle at (847) I M TRYING TO GET A TABLE TOGETHER. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE BEING SEATED PER TABLE? Each table will have 10 seats. If you have put together a table of less than 10, don t worry. The Gala committee will fill in your table to reach the magic number. If you are paying by check, turn in a note with your table partners names when submitting your payment. THE INVITATION SAYS BLACK TIE OPTIONAL. WILL WE BE OUT OF PLACE IF WE ARE NOT IN FORMAL ATTIRE? Absolutely not! This party is a celebration of St. Chrysostom s and it s amazing history. We are sure that some attendees will celebrate in tuxes and gowns, others in cocktail attire, while still others might opt for creative black tie, celebrating their ethnic roots or dressing in attire appropriate for an 1893 special event. You decide how you would like to celebrate this auspicious occasion! WE NOTICED THAT THERE IS AN OPTION TO GET A VEGETARIAN MEAL. IS THERE ALSO A GLUTEN- FREE OPTION? The main course selected is gluten-free. IS THERE A LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF TICKETS THAT CAN BE SOLD? Yes, the capacity of the room is 265. 4 CHILDREN S MINISTRIES From Will Bouvel To learn more, please will@saintc.org CHILDREN SPREADING EASTER JOY During Lent, the children blessed us with a thoughtprovoking banner that was displayed in the cloister. Now that Easter is upon us, they have created a new piece in gold, white, and silver. See page 7 for a photo. Their joy is emanating outside our walls, too. Two similar Easter banners are on display at St. Leonard s House and Grace House, two Episcopal ministries on the West Side that serve citizens returning from prison. In addition, the children made Easter cards for 39 residents of the Warrenville Juvenile Detention Center, delivered along with Easter eggs and some sweets. This partnership emerged through St. C s series, Confronting the Moral Crisis of Mass Incarceration. The inmates at Warrenville are all female, with an average age of 17 and average stay of seven months. As the center s Director Heidi Mueller explained, the kids miss their younger siblings the most, and will enjoy the children s personalized greetings. DAY SCHOOL From Mary Ellen Christy, Founding Headmistress & Judy Caraher, Interim Head mechristy@stchrysds.org and jcaraher@stchrysds.org 4 ANNUAL BOOK FAIRE APRIL Angie Euston and Amber Kardosh have been hard at work preparing for this event. Dearborn, the site of St. Chrysostom s. We ve also learned about the history of Jews and Catholics in Chicago from scholars Larry Hamilton and John Thaddeus Pawlikowski. The history of Buddhism in Chicago was shared by Asayo Horibe, of the Shambalan Center. 7 EASTER UNFOLDING AT ST. CHRYS Five WHOLE40 small groups met through Lent, one on each weekday, following one of two study tracks, Journeying With the Greats or Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John. On our annual Palm Sunday procession through the neighborhood we offered prayers for the whole of our community, the nation, the world, and all of God s creation. Be sure to visit our Easter meditation banner, created by our Sunday School children. See page 4 for more information about this wonderful project and where it has led. YOUNG PROFESSIONALS THANKS to the YoPro crew that took the reins of our March 4th First Sunday Supper. Save these upcoming First Sundays to join in the fun: May 6, June 5. Contact Lydia (lydia@saintc.org) for more information. The YoPros had a lively discussion on meaningful relationships at the February Theology on Tap session. Prof. Jared highlighted friendships from the Hebrew Scriptures and what we can learn from them. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY Neighbors In Need provides a wonderful hour or two every month for volunteer time with your family. What a wonderful way to introduce young people to the experience and value of reaching out and helping people in need. To participate in this meaningful ministry, please contact Mary Jo Fairbanks at maryjofairbanks@comcast.net. You are guaranteed to be warmly welcomed by both volunteers and guests alike! 7

9 NEIGHBORS IN NEED Every month Neighbors in Need dinners offer hospitality, hearty food, and a safe place to gather for guests. Join in! We served a flavorful dinner of honey mustard chicken and Caesar salad, finishing with peppermint brownies and ice cream (which looked very festive with their green frosting!) at our March dinner to 63 guests, four of whom were new attendees. Guests arrived on the first day of Spring and Primary Election Day, braving the gusty winds and a chilly temperature to join us! APPLAUSE! to our talented chefs who month after month serve up tasty and nutritious meals. Thanks to them all. As our guests left, one gentleman said the meal beat corned beef by a long shot! Our March meal was made possible thanks to a parish family who wishes to remain anonymous. They are very generous with their time, heart, and support. Thank you, as you inspire us all. We were fortunate again to welcome three new, energetic volunteers: Dorian, Charlie, and Scott. We hope they experienced the camaraderie we felt among our volunteers and guests alike. We missed two of our faithful volunteers, Lee and Jerry. We wish them fast healing and speedy recoveries and hope they will be up and about soon. I am very sad to tell you of the passing of our guest Lazlo Eso. A longstanding friend of his let us know during the evening. Lazlo, a longtime guest at our dinners, died very suddenly on Monday at the age of 87. He will be missed by all. We received a long list of prayer requests from our guests this month, as well as, many expressions of thanks to our NIN team: Thanks for all the wonderful things you do for us. Bless the food and time we have together. Thanks for the time spent together. Thank you for having me in your Church. This is a good place to be once a month. Please mark your calendar for our next NIN dinner. Come join us! Mary Jo Fairbanks maryjofairbanks@comcast.net NEIGHBORS IN NEED DINNERS are held on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 4:00 P.M. 10 CAMPAIGN FOR ST. CHRYSOSTOM S CHURCH & DAY SCHOOL EPISCOPAL CHURCH & DAY SCHOOL REACHING FORTH IN LOVE AT YOU SEE ACTIVITY! God has blessed us with an initial gift to help us undertake exterior building repairs which must not be delayed. The cornerstone of our Campaign is to raise the funds necessary to restore and improve our buildings and grounds. With the continued generous support of our community, the Campaign will fund three priorities: The first priority, which will utilize a significant portion of the money we raise, is to ensure the restoration of our buildings. That restoration work will include: repair and tuckpointing of the west wall, replacement of numerous windows, refurbishment of the bell tower, repairs of the limestone facades, roofing work, installation of a new heating and cooling system, wiring upgrades, and other required infrastructure improvements. The second priority is to improve the Day School space and the Church s meeting and outreach spaces. There will be the addition of three new classrooms and the reconfiguration of the Day School space to provide more natural light, a kitchen area, and improved play spaces and washrooms. For the Church spaces, there will be upgraded, more flexible meeting and community spaces (including kitchen facilities) that will be designed with enhanced capabilities for presentations and outreach. The third priority is to build the endowments for the Church and Day School, which will ensure the future we have envisioned together for St. Chrysostom s. While more than $6 million has been raised toward our $15 million goal, we have $9 million to raise as we ease into the next phase of our campaign outreach. The Campaign for St. Chrysostom s Church and Day School is our opportunity to shape the future and impact of our Church and Day School in the city and beyond. We ask that you give prayerful thought to how you can help ensure our success. Questions? Please contact Fran Caan, Advancement Director at x 225 or Mary Ellen Christy, Founding Headmistress, The Day School at x JOIN US TO MAKE THIS VISION A REALITY Consider prayerfully how you can contribute to the next phase of our ministry. Advancement Director Fran Caan fran@saintc.org (312) ext. 225 is available to help you develop a gift plan.
