Stephanie Martin Stephanie Martin, composer of today s Te Deum, which was written to celebrate St, Chrysostom s 125 th anniversary, is a Canadian composer, choral conductor and music teacher. She is the past Music Director of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene ( Anglican)) in Toronto where Healey Willan developed a unique music program and was for more than 20 years the Conductor of the Pax Christi Chorale, one of Canada s leading oratorio choirs. At Pax Christi she led performances of many major choral works including the Canadian premiers of Elgar s The Apostles and Parry s Judith. Stephanie has composed several choral works for St. John Cantius Church here in Chicago. Her music is published by their publishing arm, Biretta Books, and their choir will record a CD of her sacred music later this year. Her current major project is the composition of an opera based on the story of the Canadian Hospital Ship, the Llandovery Castle, which was sunk by a German U Boat off the coast of Ireland in June 1918 with the loss of 234 lives including 14 nursing sisters. This work will be given its premier in Toronto in June, one hundred years after the events depicted. 3

Please be seated as the choir sings the Psalm Psalm 23 Dominus regit me Chant: H. Walford Davies The Lord is my shepherd * I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures * he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul * he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his Name s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; * for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; * thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, * and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. First Reading Acts 4:5-12 Celebrant A reading from the book of Acts. The rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem, with Annas the high priest, Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of the high-priestly family. When they had made the prisoners stand in their midst, they inquired, "By what power or by what name did you do this?" Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, if we are questioned today because of a good deed done to someone who was sick and are asked how this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that this man is standing before you in good health by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. This Jesus is `the stone that was rejected by you, the builders; it has become the cornerstone.' There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among mortals by which we must be saved." Lector The Word of the Lord People Thanks be to God. Please stand Hymn S-184 (front of hymnal) Benedictus es, Domine Chant: John Goss Please sit Second Reading John 10:11-18 Lector A reading from the Gospel according to John. Jesus said, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. 5

The congregation may remain seated. Te Deum Stephanie Martin Composer, Former Conductor of the Pax Christi Chorale We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud, the Heavens and all the Powers therein. To thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry: Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the apostles praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise thee. The noble army of martyrs praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge thee, the Father, of an infinite majesty, thine honourorable, true, and only Son, also the Holy Ghost the Comforter. Thou art the King of glory, O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When thou took st upon thee to deliver man, thou didst not abhor the Virgin s womb. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death: thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come to be our judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy saints, in glory everlasting. O Lord, save thy people: and bless thine heritage. Govern them: and lift them up forever. Day by day we magnify thee; and we worship thy Name ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord: to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us: as our trust is in thee. O Lord, in thee have I trusted: let me never be confounded. Please stand The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 6

8 The Collect of the Day O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. A Collect for Sundays O God, who makest us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of thy Son our Lord: Grant us this day such blessing through our worship of thee, that the days to come may be spent in thy favor; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Collect for the Renewal of Life O God, the King eternal, who dividest the day from the night and turnest the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep thy law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done thy will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when the night cometh, rejoice to give thee thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Collect for Guidance Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to thee, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly thine, utterly dedicated unto thee; and then use us, we pray thee, as thou wilt, and always to thy glory and the welfare of thy people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. A Collect for Mission O God, who hast made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and didst send thy blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after thee and find thee, bring the nations into thy fold, pour out thy Spirit upon all flesh, and hasten the coming of thy kingdom; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Prayers for special intentions Today we remember and place into God s loving care all those who have died, that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom. We pray for all those who have died as a result of gun violence in our city this week: Tuong Lam, 61; Tiwaconda Williams, 36; Deondrae Shepherd, 21; Stephen Ohr, 34; Eric Bones, 34; Laverne Smith, 62; Jaheim Wilson, 16, and unknown victims ages 21 and 42. We lift up all those in our community in need of healing, relief from pain, and wholeness, in particular Tonya, Bob, Jennifer, Candace, Louise, Lauryn, Jamila, Cece, Sister Mary Jean, Pam, Scott, Luke, DeDe, Christopher, Tina, Bruce, Kathie, Megan, Frank, Marilyn, Scott, Lee, Jennifer, Monique, Jerry, Donnie, and all our friends in the Neighbors in Need program. Are there others? (pause) The General Thanksgiving Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all men. We bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful; and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. A Prayer of St. Chrysostom Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

10 The Choir of St. Chrysostom s Church Anna Kain, Patty Kennedy, Nancy Mazurowski, Lily Wirth Adrianne Blanks, Alex Edgemon, Megan Magsirili, Jeremy Parkin Sebastian Armendariz, Justin Berkowitz, Adam Smith, Josh Taylor Justin Adair, Mark Haddad, Ron Mitchell, Trevor Vanderzee Richard Hoskins Director of Music & Organist Roger D. Stanley Associate Organist James Fackenthal Carillonneur Frank Bridge ( ) enjoyed a brilliant and varied career. After studying composition with Charles Stanford he was violist in the Joachim String Quartet, conducted at Covent Garden, and composed in many genres, but especially chamber music. He taught composition privately, most famously to Benjamin Britten, who championed Bridge s music in later years. Britten, in fact, stated in 1963 that he had not "yet come up to the technical standards" which Bridge had established for him! He wrote several beautiful and intricately crafted works for organ employing lyric and orchestral sonorities, and an individual and rich harmony. The Adagio is based upon a serene melody heard at the opening of the work. This morning, in celebration of our 125th anniversary, we are honoured to sing the premiere of a beautiful new Te Deum composed by Stephanie Martin. Stephanie Martin (b1962) is a Canadian composer who writes primarily sacred choral music. She is the past Music Director of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Toronto where Healey Willan established a unique choral tradition. She is conductor emeritus of the oratorio choir Pax Christi Chorale, Associate Professor at York University, and leader of the medieval ensemble Schola Magdalena. Her current all-consuming project is an opera recounting the forgotten story of 14 nurses who perished when their WW1 hospital ship was torpedoed in the north Atlantic. Her choral music is published here in Chicago by Biretta Books. You may read more about her on her website The Te Deum is scored for SATB choir with organ accompaniment. Written in her individual and compelling style, the Te Deum resides firmly in the Anglo-North American-Anglican choral tradition. The Latin text is set clearly in music that alternates the plainsong melody of the Solemn Te Deum Tone with freely composed passages which eloquently express the church s most powerful hymn of praise. The organ accompaniment is a brilliant tour de force which, in the tradition of Herbert Howells and Benjamin Britten, is independent of the vocal parts. Ms. Martin writes: The Te Deum has been offered as a song of thanksgiving for many centuries. I ve always loved the moment in Shakespeare s Henry V when the victorious English sing the Te Deum after their miraculous defeat of the French at Agincourt. It is spine-tingling to think those same words will be offered up in church today. In my composition, written specifically for St. Chrysostom s wonderful choir and organ, I borrow the ancient Gregorian chant melody and spin modern counterpoint around it. The text conjures up so many visual images of martyrs, angels, joy and judgment. I ve tried to capture the contrasting moods and meanings of this wonderful text. Healey Willan ( ), Organist-choirmaster of Toronto's church of St. Mary Magdalene, was, with Sowerby and Howells, a major contributor to Anglican choral and organ repertoire during the middle years of the 20 th century. His gracious and simple setting of a text from the Song of Solomon, traditionally associated with Easter and Spring, is exquisitely compact yet contains a world of beauty. Charles Tournemire ( ) was one of Franck's last organ students at the Conservatoire National de Paris and later succeeded him as Organiste Titulaire of St. Clothilde. His organ studies continued with Charles Maire Widor, Franck s successor at the Conservatory. His deep knowledge of the plainchant Propers sung during the Sunday Mass and on festal occasions fired an enormous out-pouring of composed and improvised organ music. He was highly respected for the intensity and brilliance of those compositions and improvisations and his influence upon the succeeding generation of French composers was immense. His Improvisation sur le Te Deum is one of five improvisations recorded in two sessions at St. Clothilde which his pupil, Maurice Duruflé later transcribed from the wax cylinders. The work is based on the opening notes of the solemn plainchant melody, which are also heard in Stephanie Martin s new setting. A brilliant and imaginative work, it shows Tournemire's sheer genius in its remarkable unfolding. The descant to Hymn 518 is by Richard Hoskins.

Saint Chrys in Cook County June 13 and various dates in 2018 Patricia Cloud is working to establish a program sponsored by St. Chrysostom's to serve in the Religious Volunteer program of the Cook County Department of Corrections. Volunteers from the team will go into the facility once a quarter to conduct worship, including song, scripture, prayers and Holy Communion. All are welcome to participate, lay and clergy alike. Since the team will commit to providing one service per quarter, the time commitment for individuals can be very flexible. Even those wishing to participate as seldom as once or twice a year are most welcome. The worship service is generally about one and a half hours. The only other commitments are for one 2-hour training session per year, and one additional visit to the DOC campus to receive the necessary ID. Participation involves filling out an application form and clearing a standard background check. The next scheduled training is on June 13.
