1 Notes and Announcements Retreat: Interrupting the Silence October 20, 2018, 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saint Chrysostom's and our partner parish, Messiah- St. Bartholomew, are co-hosting a joint retreat called Interrupting the Silence. Our goal is to get to know one another more deeply as people of faith; share our stories, and to be reminded of God s command to us to Break the Silence. The retreat will take place at St. Paul and the Redeemer, at 4945 S. Dorcester. There is no cost to attend, but we do suggest a $10 donation for lunch. You are also encouraged to order your own copy of the book before the retreat: Command-Speak/dp/ Please RVSP by October 17: Lydia@saintc.org, , or messiahstbarth@comcast.net When Home Won't Let You Stay By James A. Bowey, Artist in Residence October 1-December 31 This fall and winter, documentary artist James A. Bowey will be Saint Chrysostom s Artist in Residence. James will present his poignant traveling exhibit about refugees in America, as well as community programs about the refugee crisis. whenhomewontletyoustay.org What is an Artist-in-Residence and why here? An artist-in-residence is a member of the local art community in Chicago. We are partnering with artists whose work is intended to engage with the public in public spaces instead of sitting in a protected gallery. Visual art has the potential to bring the sacred out of the church sanctuary and into the world. And the church has the potential to bring the secular world into the sacred space of a worshipping community. In the office: staffing change Administrative Assistant Lydia Munroe will be leaving St. C's at the end of September. Lydia joined the church staff in March of 2017 and has become an integral part of Parish life. We're sad to see her go, but she's off on her next big adventure: a year of living and working in New Zealand. Our blessings go with her! Dr. Sam Portaro, Theologian-in-Residence Who am I and why am I here? There is abundant commission for a church who, through its scattered members and their varied gifts, extends the compelling love of God to the farthest reaches. Vocational discernment isn t just how the institutional church finds its ordained leadership. Vocational discernment is the most basic and essential expression of a meaningful life and the church's mission. This conversational series aims to encourage a renewed commitment to the ageless Christian discipline of vocational discernment as the foundation of all ministry, a discipline and responsibility of all the baptized, individually and collectively. Participants are encouraged to read the first four chapters of Sam s book, Transforming Vocation, for the first session. To sign up, contact the Parish Office. 7 Capital Campaign Updates and News Exciting news! We have completed a new Day School/Sunday School classroom! A note from Headmistress Judy Caraher: "The Day School is happy to report the successfully completed conversion of one of the Sunday School classrooms to a beautifully equipped classroom that will accommodate 11 of our Full Day Fours students. We are happy to have a growing enrollment that has required us to expand to meet the demand of our families." We remain deeply grateful to the many members who have stepped up with Leadership Gifts in support of the Campaign. While we have $7.5 million to go, we cannot contain our excitement! A successful campaign will mean more functional and missional space for outreach programs; expanded Day School classrooms, programs and scholarships; and stewardship of our historical and aging building. With God s blessing and your participation, this is possible. Completed tuck-pointing and masonry repairs on exterior envelope We ask that you give prayerful thought to how you can help ensure our success. Please take our calls and accept our invitations to discuss our plans. We want you to participate in a way that feels most meaningful to you and your family. Questions? Please contact: Fran Caan, Advancement Director or Mary Ellen Christy, Founding Headmistress, The Day School The new Day School/Sunday School classroom, expanding our student capacity. 7
