RURAL CHAPTER NEWS..... By Ted M. Hamasu The prexy. VP and the secretary of our chapter were i nvi ted by Jerry Yamaki to visit a penthouse apartment for our meeting place. After a delicious lunch and drinks, compliments of the Yamakis, we were chauffeured in his Cadillac to the Pearlridge S~uare where the apartment is located. It took the elevator a little time to climb up 44 stor ies to Apt at the top of the structure. As we entered. the first thing that met my eyes was Ford Island in Pearl Haibor. "Wow, what a view!", I e)(c~.imed spontaneously. From this vantage point, you can see Oiamond~Head on the left, Pearl Harbor right in front, Waipahu, the Waianae Mts., Mililani,.~nd as far as Wahiawa and Koolau Mts. on your right. But before I forget, let me tell you about of Hq. gol fers. (I won't mention names so you readers figure it out.) Three of our boys got together a foursome, including Tak Takahashi. I don't recall where they golfed but Tak volunteered to be the scorekeeper. As the game progressed t Tak paused at one of the holes and asked two of the foursome "how much did you ~hoot?~' The first answered "over 10". The second also said "over 10". Tak looked at the two and'without a word threw away the s~~r~ cards. I didn't dare ask who these two were but Tak did'say" "What's the sense of keepi n9 score?" I'm not a golfer but I assumed' the two were so lousy, no scores need be kept. However,,'to "have the scorekeeper throwaway the score cards must be bad - :un'heard 'Of to quote other golfers!..

By Tsugi Takemoto What to do with all the donations received for our Iniki fund from you generous people was decided at a meeting held Feb. 14, 199 at the Wailua Marina Restaurant. At least the first attempt was made by voting on the suggestion that was brought back by committee of Mako Takiguchi. Ben Morimoto and Kazu Senda. The 2 members present voted to allot $200 to each paid-up member and another decision making will be held later. Larry Sakoda and Bunkichi Matsuyoshi have been helping other, veterans on Saturdays to repair the damages caused by Iniki around the Kauai Veterans Center. Wally Takemoto gave up Saturday also. The Kauai Veterans Council is fortunate in having a group of 15 veterans to do the ground work while waiting to see who will pay for the hurricane damages. Where and when the Mother's Day luncheon will be held will be decided by Lillian Takiguchi, Norma Senda, Shimoe Mukai, Matsuko Doi, a.nd Es>~heT..,. hjg,eta".wh.o.. wjll ",:r~pq.r.t" a,t... _-~.h.~,next meeting on April 18, 199. The scheduled date of April 11 is Easter Sunday. Nothing much is going on as too many members are too busy fixing their houses, or everyone is keeping m~m. BAKER CHAPTER NEWS... By Yasu Takata Eighteen showed up for our chapter meeting on saturday. Feb. 20, at one o'clock, an increase of 4 members. We expected more bec~ase of the change to daytime. I asked for news but nobody volunteered any. So I have to make my own, except for Evelyn Tsud&'s tidbits. The Health and Science news brought out two things. One was green tea, which Teshima of Japan wrote to me about sometime ago. Instead of coffee. I switched to chazuke and koko about couple of months ago using green tea, morning cup of green tea and night cap of a cup. It brought my blood sugar down about 25 points. Whether.it was the tea that helped or the drop in the intake of calories or,the, exercise I got cleani ng up my yard, who knows? It was the first drop in my blood sugar level in months. Next~ was the article about gar 1 ic. I haven't started on it yet. The paper says there are people who eat a whole clove a day and swear that it keeps them heal thy. Lefty Mizusawa of our Rural Chapter claims that mamaki tea helps if you believe in it. (Mind over body) Psycho~ogists say tht can happen. Lefty says he has plants at home and is willing to give them to people who believe in,it. Another one is noni JUlce. Ray Nosaka and I tr ied the noni juice for, several months but didn't show any improvement. The noni juice was thrown out by my wife who said it looks unsanistary. The various local newspapers carried very interesting stories about one of Hawaii's living treasures. Toshiko Takaezu. sister of Bill Takaezu. She was recently awarded an honorarydoctoi's degree by the University of Hawaii. She is a world renowned artist and her works in ceramics, fiber, and metal are now on display at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. the Contemporary Museum, and the Advertiser Gallery. Her works are also on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
9 Another articleln the 2/12/9 edition of the Ha~aii Herald which caught my attention was one "about Darrell Kani nau, son-i n-l aw of,james and Irene Ks'washi'ma. Befing /4 Hawaiian,Oarrell was asked abo~t his thoughts on th~ Hawaiian sovereignty movement. Although he is proud of his Hawaiian heritage, he is not involved in any movement because he is still trying to learn about the, hawaiian history. Darrell says that his marriage to Sue Kawashima has given him another cul ture a'nd he is very comfortable embraci ng,the two di fferent cul tures. As a matter of fact, Darrell and Sue were instrumental in having the annual mochitsuki gathering of the clan moved to their home. You may recall seeing them pounding mochi on TV and in the papers~ The most recent edition of the California Hotel news showed a photo or Frank Fujiwara smiling from ear to ear because he was one of the lucky slot winners. v...".'-1"-'. v '-'.
