t- CLUB 100 DECEMBER 1989 OUR SALUTE TO THE EDITOR, DONALD "BLUE" NAGASAKI: Ray and Aki Nosaka **** Our hearts are very sad indeed as this issue goes to print. Our beloved editor passed away on November 16, 1989 after being, stricken with an aneurysm. Donald was proud and had many high hopes and expectations for the Puka Puka Parade. He had looked forward to using the new duplicating machine as a way to give the members a monthly newsletter that they would be really proud to receive. He often spoke of future editorials that he would write naming some of the individuals that he felt were worthy of praise and recognition. His 11 months as editor were just too short, but the enthusiasm and dedication that he left behind will hopefully be continued. 'In Donald's memory, let us keep the Puka Puka Parade rolling! THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE: Ray Nosaka On December 31, 1989, my term in office as President of Club 100 will end. I wish to take this opportunity to express my sincerest appreciation to the Board of Directors for their wholehearted cooperation and support throughout the year. It was indeed a pleasure and privilege to have served with these men. I sincerely feel that this has been a successful year as I look 'over some of the accomplishments, such as: reactivating the monthly Puka Puka Parade (special'thanks to editor Donald Nagasaki), Rotation System by the chapters to determine the, responsibility of chairing the annual events (Installation Party, Anniversary Banquet, and Memorial Service), General.. Membership Meeting where the members voted to transfer our club property to the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, an amicable solution to accept the non-members who frequent our clubhouse, reducing the unnecessary fulltime position of the clerk typist to a part-time position, the opportunity to work together with some of the 442nd Veterans Club members in the production of a Fi.rst Hawaiian Bank television commercial (filmed at our clubhouse), and the harmonious blending of our members singing with the 442nd Choral Group at our 44th Annual Memorial Service capped off a truly remarkable year. The one thing that has not yet been accomplished, that I personally hope will come true very soon, is the changing of our club's name to the "looth Infantry Veterans Club." Sure "Club 100" is easy to say, but so is "Club Cho-Cho", "Club Sumi", and other night clubs and bars. Let us be proud of our military records and accomplishments and leave a name that our children can speak proudly of when we are no longer here to speak for' ourselves. I am most grateful to all of the dedicated board members, chairmen of the various committees, members, wives, widows, and to Paul Nanamori for all of the help they have extended to me. I pray that you will all stay healthy and happy. And to all of you readers wherever you are, my wife, Aki, and I wish you a Blessed Christmas and a very, joyful and prosperous New Year. Aloha and Mahalo Nui Loa! s~cerely P.S. Aki and I will t~ke over the duties as editor. Please continue to write. Without you there would be no Puka Puka Parade.

page 2 BAKER CHAPTER NEWS: Yasuo Takata We extend our deepest sympathy to the Ogata family for the loss of Tommy, a very special friend of ours. He passed away on October 4, Tsutomu "Tommy" Ogata was born on October I, 1919 in Ewa to Tsuruzo and Shima Ogata. He lived in Hawaii during his boyhood days and was sent to Japan when he was a teenager. He spent about four years in Fukushima. At!age 18, he returned to Hawaii and became a cook. I first knew him when he was a cook at the old Olympic Grill. In December 1940, he was drafted into the Army. After four months of recruit training, he was transferred to B Company, 298th Infantry Regiment. When we went there, we found the cooking messy and sloppy. After several months, I asked our captain to transfer Tommy to the kitchen as a cook. Our meals improved tremendously and the variety increased. When we were transferred to the 100th Infantry Battalion (Separate), Tommy was placed in Company B, so our good food continued. During the Louisiana Maneuvers, the first day we got peanut butter sandwiches. But when Tommy found ou.t how dry it was, he mixed apple butter with the peanut butter and made it more palatable. Then we went to combat in Italy. Most of the time we had combat rations. But, when we were taken off the front lines, we tasted Tommy's good cooking. Even the powdered eggs were made so that we could eat it. The best was in Anzio. The kitchen gang traded the combat rations for rice cereal. They strained the cereal so that all th.e sugar was removed and only the rice remained. So, we had rice to eat. They also gathered Chinese watercress and fish to feed us. Once we even had sushi. In Cassino, Anzio, and the breakthrough to Rome, the cooks were carrying food, water, and supplies to the men at the front. Tommy received his Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the Distinguished Unit Badge. After his discharge, he started a coffee shop, but gave it up to work for the Royal Hawaiian and Princess Kaiulani Hotels in Hawaii and Kauai and the Waialae Country Club. He suffered a heart attack about four years ago and had a by-pass operation. Two years later, he suffered from intestinal cancer. During the last three months, he was undergoing dialysis due to kidney failure. He died on October 4 due to a cerebral hemorrhage. Tommy was a quiet, helpful, and conscientious man. He helped and taught his nephews to become good cooks. Stanley Ogata started at Hale Nanea, then had his own place at the Aikahi Shopping Center until he got hurt. He inspired, helped and taught Curtis Ogata who is now at the Waialae Country Club. Tommy has helped our Baker Chapter Christmas parties by preparing fancy hors d' oeuvres and canapes. He also prepared an annual dinner for the Backroom Gang. Tommy was a quiet, always helpful, never complaining, hard working, and generous person. We shall sorely miss him. We also extend our deepest sympathy to Hajime Kodama's family. Hajime lost his mother on November 13, Funeral services were held on November 18 at Hosoi Garden Mortu~ry. Due to the numbness in his legs, Haj ime Yamane said he had a hard time walking up the slopes of the golf courses. He had it checked and found that he had a blockage of the artery to his legs. He had a by-pass done last month. Hajime showed me a long centipede-like surgery scar from top to bottom. He has recovered and is doing nicely now and should be golfing again. Found hidden talent. On November 5, I attended the 1989 Nenchoska, sponsored by the United Japanese Society of Hawaii at the East-West Center of Hawaii, as a guest of my sister, Mildred, who was one of the honorees. As I watched the entertainment, I saw Ethel Sekine dance the "Yukitsubaki" as a member of Ohsen Minbu Kai. She did it very gracefully. Not only is she in our Karaoke Club, but also in the Japanese Dance Club.,,

page 3 BAKER CHAPTER NEWS Ho Ho Ho 1 Baker Chapter will be having the first Christmas party of the year on December 8, Friday night. The party will start with cocktails from 6: 00-6: 30 p.m. and dinner from 6: 30 p.m. After dinner, we will have a magician, then a community sing (led by our ukulele club), leading to the corning of good 'ole Santa. Then we will have door prizes. Price: $4.00 for adults and $2.00 for children (ages 12-18). The delicious dinner will be prepared by Robert Aoki and committee members. Corne all and enjoy the festivities. Bring your children and grandchildren. CHARLIE CHAPTER NEWS: George Hagiwara Masa Nakano's European Tour: Masa 'Nakano just got back from his European tour of some ten different countries traveling over a diverse countryside to highly industrialized cities, unlike anything in America seems to have touched his nostalgic nerve of those days when, not so long ago. Flying into London, the party was ferried across the English Channel into Brussels. Following a tour of a couple of windmills, the party was bussed the rest of the way through Germany, Austria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Switzerland, over the Alps into Milan and the Po Valley into colorful Florence and Rome. Following an intensive tour of Rome, including the Vatican, the tourist hit for the Mediterranean coast up through familiar country. such as Civitavecchia, Livorno, Pisa, Viarreggio, La Spezia, Genova, and finally into Monte Carlo and Nice, France. From Nice, the bus backtracked into Monte Carlo for an evening of relaxation, and from there to Lyons and Paris. From Paris, the bus left us in Calais, France where we boarded the Hovercraft, skimming over the waters of the Channel in minutes. The rest of the journey was by air to Honolulu. Tadashi Umamoto and Takako, with Masao Sato and Chieko from Maui, flew, to Orlando, Florida, doing some of the things they missed in their ~irst childhood, a day at Epcot Center and Disneyworld, a fantasy land, if there ever was one, and something to see and experience, especially through the eyes of our youngsters. From Orlando, the groups toured by bus to New Orleans for a little shopping on the famous Canal Street. The next stop was Johnson Ranchin, Texas, after a monotonous desert ride through sagebrush country. After Texas, they went to the Carlsbad Caverns and thrilled with the nest of flying bats. And for a change of scenario there was little change in the scenery traveling up into the Rockies, but not for long before they ran into the Wash Cliffs towering over them like natural skyscrapers. Crossing over the Black Mountains and river country, they were back into more sagebrush country and flat country surrounded by bare windswept mountain ranges of Nevada, and finally into fabulous las Vegas. And while they saw t.he havoc in San Francisco over the T. V., they did not witness any of the damages they had anticipated seeing on their way home. Off Down Under went the Miyashiros - Chicken and wife, Lorraine, returned from a 16-day tour of Sydney and Melbourne, Australia and North Island of New Zealand. Except for the towns looking every bit like any American city or town, there the resemblance ended. While the natives comprehended English, their Australian Brogue was something else. New Zealand seemed more like horne with the presence of the Maoris, who look like Hawaiians, until they start speaking. The countryside was more like the Big Island ranch country except for the livestock, mostly sheep, and of all things, reindeer ranches. Visi tinglas Vegas were Roy and Mrs. Ikawa (formerly of Charlie Chapter, alter transferred to Headquarters), Tadashi and Takako Umamoto and Masao and Chieko Sato from Maui, and the Hagiwaras, George and Hazel. From the Infirmary: Goro Kuwada, down with the shingles for seven years, is in good spirits and still maintains his sense of humor and optimism that relief is on the way with modern research techniques. Fortunately, Katherine is in the best of health and mood and is an excellent companion... Yoroku Ito is in good spirits and spending his time concentrating on his bonsai plants and class. He is scheduled for another operation to relax his neck muscles. Otherwise, his main concern is his bonsai plants... Tadanojo Fukuda looks very good and is really concentrating his efforts in developing his GOD given talents in his voice... Tsutomu Takayama is unable to get around by himself" Fortunately, Jeanette is still in good

page 4 CHARLIE CHAPTER NEWS health and spirits hopeful. We will miss his inimitable laughter at our meetings and generos~ty with the ogo that he brought to our meetings. Tragedy: Alexander Brothers, Ltd, one of the oldest office furniture stores in Honolulu, dealing in popular steel office furnitures, has been completely demolished in an all night blaze at their new location at the North Nimitz Business Center. The heat was so intense that it melted and twisted the steel girders and beams. Especial'ly tragic was that it should happen in Rusty's twilight years, following his retirement and turning over the management to his son. Fortunately, in spite of the total loss, the records filed in the fireproof filing cabinets were not even scorched. The Nakagawas expressed their appreciation for the many calls from their friends and customers. The many expressions of sympathy and volunteer help was deeply appreciated. Obituaries: Services over the ashes of Ronald G. Higashi, Charlie Chapter member, of Kihei, Maui, were held at the Hosoi Garden Mirtuary at noon on November 4, Ronald was born in Keokea, Kona, awa~~. He was 73 years old and survived by his wife, Shizuye; son, Percy; daughter, Diane Kawauchi; three brothers, Douglas, Yoshio, and Tatsuo; three sisters, Ethel M. Kumura, Amy T. Masuhara, and Gladys Y. Kaminaka; and four grandchildren.,old News Lost in the Mail: Recanting some old news which was lost in the mail and supposed to be for the November issue: On the Alaskan cruise, so well described by Amy Ikeda, were Kenneth and Beatrice Higa, Stanley and Doris Kimura, Kazuto and Lynn Shimizu, besides Amy Ikeda. Stanley and Doris Kimura dropped off the cruise and stayed over with another fellow photographer friend in Fairbanks to do some fishing... The Iwais, Warren and Betty, visited their daughter and her family and got reacquainted with their grandchildren. Mas Sakaguchi, one of the replacements, living near Seattle I upon learning that Warren was visiting his daughter, picked up Warren to go crabbing... Masa and Ai Kawamoto spent their vacation visi ting their son in Oregon. For a change, this year they caught the 'crain to Denver, Colorado. They were thrilled to be travelling through the Royal Gorge Canyon... Chester and Betty Hada, retired military, attended the VFW Convention in Las Vegas this past summer... Kunimi tsu Hiramoto, more popularly as "Cream", took his grandson with him to visit his daughter in Anchorage, Alaska. He wanted his grandson to be acquainted with his daughter's son who is the same age. While there, he took his family to visit the Palmer County Fair, an annual event. He was surprised to be able to see the largest pumpkin in the world... Mike and Betty Tokunaga, accompanied by their in-laws, Susumu Fukuyoshi and his wife, were guests of Betty's niece this summer in Vida, Oregon. For a change of scenery, Betty's niece took them to a cabin in the forest on the bank of the McKenzie River to introduce them to fly fishing. To be out of touch with civilization, no telephone or neighbors, was an experience in itself. But to go wading up the stream to try fly fishing was something that they will never forget. And as God made green apples, they'll be back for the big one that got away.. Doc Kanazawa was excited over his recent fishing expedition. He and his party had to be flown into the Alaskan wilderness for a once in a lifetime fishing trip. They went into the headwaters of some river into the midst of a salmon spawning ground. According to Doc, there was salmon everywhere. It was a virtual fish lover's paradise, except that you had to fight off the bears from stealing your catch. Having spent a summer near the headwaters of the Salmon River, another salmon spawning grounds, I can just imagine what DOC'S excitement was all about.. Takeshi and Dorothy Onishi were thrilled last summer to have their daughter and her family home for the first time since she left home. According to Takeshi, they lost their_ daughter shortly after graduation from University Teachers' College, when she left for Japan to accept a teaching position with three' of her friends. While her friends ended up returning, the Onishis' daughter fell in love with Shoichi Yamashita, an engineer with a film company and got talked into making Japan her home. So, while their daughter was busy contacting her classmates and showing her husband around, Takeshi and Dorothy took the opportunity to get acquainted with their grandchildren. Stanley Akita thrilled Shoichi by treating him to a round of golf.

page 5 DOG CHAPTER NEWS: Helen Nikaido At the last Dog Chapter meeting, it was decided that the 1990 Dog Company Reunion would be held on June 22, 23 & ~4, It was moved up one week so that there would be no conflict with the AJA veterans Reunion in Kailua Kona as some of you may wish to go to that reunion. The October meeting was very disappointing. Only seven members showed up. Is it because of the football season or just plain lazy and forgetful? Maybe the Headquarters and Dog Chapters should combine their meeting as Headquarters had just a handful attending too. It will be only a few more years where you can come out and enjoy the comradeship We serve breakfast after the meeting. Don't forget the Dog Chapter Christmas Party on Sunday, December 17 at the clubhouse.. Bring your children and grandchildren. There'll be games and lots of prizes. Santa will be there to give you gifts. Recent travelers trying their luck to make their million bucks were Sadashi and Jane Matsunami who went to Las Vegas and Ed and Kay Harada who went to Reno. FO COMPANY NEWS: Hakaru Taoka I am pinch-hitting for Kenneth "Mike" Higa, the perrenial "F" Company newswriter who contributed so much to the success of our annual reunion. He worked very hard prior to and during the course of our reunion assisting with the planning and at the same time visiting his sister, Evelyn Min, who was in critical condition at Straub Hospital. In spite of all that was done for her, Evelyn Min passed away on Saturday, November 4, We extend our dee:pest sympathy to Kenneth and his family for the loss of one so dear to. them. The reunion has come and gone, but I might add that it was an enjoyable reunion and enjoyed by the participants. You know, during my visit to Japan, I learned that in ancient Japan, the planning and execution contained minor flaws made on purpose and that all things were not finished letter-perfect. For example, the pillars located at the entrance to the largest statue of Buddha in Nara contained a flaw in one of its pillars. The art work on this pillar was purposely designed upside down so as not to be the same as the others. I thought this was just a fairy tale. At the end of my regular tour, I took a trip to Iwakuni, Yamaguchi, to visit with my cousin. When I visited him about 12 years ago, he was living in a rather old home. To my surprise, though, now I found him living in a brand new home constructed about four or five years ago. Just to test whether the theory or philosophy of the purposely planned flaw in the design was true, I asked him the question. To my surprise, he answered in the affirmative and then showed me the flaw in his horne. He said that the carpenter left the back side of the "header" of the Tokonoma unfinished on purpose. Now back to the reunion. Maybe, just maybe, Albert Shimizu who chaired the reunion is a history buff and knew something like this of old Japan. So, he purposely arrived late at the Friday Natsunoya Tea House function along with couple other car loads of neighbor islanders just in time to start the festivities rolling. Or was it plain miscommunication? Whatever it was, this small group of late comers sure missed the ono pupus of dried tako furnished by Kenzo Endo, the plates of baked salmon furnished by the Seos, the Korean and regular style ogo by Eichi Endo of Maui, the manju from Maui, the potato and taro chips from the Hawaii gang, and two big platters of goodies by Natsunoya Tea House. Besides these, the Kapuniais donated some soda and Mrs. Amano donated some beer. One thing we enjoyed most was sitting on chairs rather than on the floor. Seems like our legs can no longer take the beating of sitting on the floor. This arrangement was made by Kiyoshi Jinnohara, the chief coordinator of the Natsunoya affair. Thanks, Jin. On Saturday morning, November 4, the Hawaii contingent along with Hakaru Tao of Kauai were driven to Maunalani Nursing Center by Seiso Karnishita, Rudy Yoshida, Sam Tsuji, and Hakaru Taoka to visit with Yasuo Takenouchi. Yasu was real happy to see them and got somewhat emotional at first but recovered real fast. In fact, ne was so happy that at one juncture of the visitation he stood up almost at attention to show his visitors that he

page 6 nf n COMPANY NEWS was corning along real well. Well, it was a real comfort to see Yasu making such good progress. Thank you all for visiting with Yasu. Your visits with him, no doubt, will inspire him to get well that much sooner. Saturday, November 4, was tailgate night, UH vs UTEP. The chartered bus picked up the neighbor islanders at the Pagoda along with the Honolulu gang at ab0ut 4 o'clock and bussed them over to Aloha Stadium. In the meantime, the Kapuniai family had gone over early to set up the place for us to assemble for the tailgating. They even brought along the tables and ice chests with the ice and drinks and even donated a lot of soda. Hakaru Taoka made the arrangements with Leeward Drive Inn for the kaukau. The menu for the day was stew and rice. Leeward Drive Inn, through the courtesy of Jerry Yamaki (Rural) and wife, Carole, gave us a huge pot of stew enough to feed an army and, to boot, gave us a variety of complimentary tsukemono. The tailgating started as soon as the group from the bus assembled at the designated place. The gang sure had lots to eat. Besides the stew, rice, and tsukemono, Albert Shimizu donated spare ribs, boiled peanuts, and "raw" eggplant. Jane Kawaguchi - cake, Rudy Yoshida - banana bread, Jinnoharas - sekihan (red bean rice), Sally Taoka - andagi, and the Kauai sausage brought by the Kauai group. I assume that the gang enjoyed the tailgating and socializing more than the football game. Can't blame them because the UH players had used up all of their energy at the BYU game of the previous week and sputtered along to win this one. Tailgating with such a large group can sure be a problem without the cooperation of many. We were real fortunate to have people like Kiyoshi and Mary Jinnohara, Seiso Kamishita, Beatrice Niimi, Sally Taoka,. and a neighbor islander, Ethel Nishimura, who went tailgating specially to help serve and cook. And, to boot, these people didn't go inside to see the game. While the game was going on, these people stayed outside and cleaned up and got things all ready so we could take off when the game was over. Thanks for all the work you've done. On Sunday morning, a short business meeting was conducted by President Seiso Karnishita. At this meeting, the Foxes adopted a new rotation system for our future reunions. It was decided that we will be going to Kauai in 1990 (next year), to Hawaii in 1991, and return to Oahu in 1992 so our reunion would be held in conjunction with the Club 100's 50th Anniversary Celebration. After that, it will be off to Maui in The final order of business was the election of officers. Elected as president was Albert Shimizu, Vice President - Ted Hamasu, Secretary - Rudy Yoshida, and T,reasurer - Kenzo Endo. Congratulations to you all. Following the business meeting, lunch was served. Hakaru Taoka arranged for the lunch through Jerry and Carole Yamaki of Leeward Drive Inn, who again donated a variety of complimentary tsukemono. Also, we again had many donors. The Mataki Takeshi tas brought cheesecake, the Ken Ihas - baked manju, the Satoshi Kashimotos - baked mochi, the Kiyoshi Jinnoharas - tsukemono and taro pupu, the Seiso Kamishitas - dim sum, the Richard Fujitas - smoked salmon, the Oscar Fukinos - orange cream j ello, and James Higa - six cases of soda. Thanks for your generosity. This year's reunion was one of the smallest gatherings we have had over the years with 76 signing up. They were: From Hawaii: M/M Seitoku Akamine, M/M Shigeru Ito, M/M Charles Nishimura, M/M Masao Fuj imoto, M/M Nobu Okinaka, Hayato Tanaka, and Hiromi Kobayashi. From Kauai: M/M Choichi Shimabukuro, M/M Sadao Kawamoto, Hakaru Tao, and Sakae Watanabe. From Maui:. M/M Eichi Endo and M/M Wataru Kaneshina. From Oahu: M/M Kenzo Endo, M/M Richard Fuj ita, M/M Seiso Kamishi ta, M/M Robert Kapuniai, M/M Hideshi Niimi, M/M Yukio Tanji, M/M Rudy Yoshida, M/M Mike Enga, M/M Oscar Fukino, M/M Yasuto Furusho, M/M Kenneth M. Higa, M/M Kenichi Iha, M/M Kiyoshi Jinnohara, M/M Satoshi Kashimoto, M/M Tadao Seo, M/M Mataki Takeshita, M/M Hakaru Taoka, M/M Ted Hamasu, Mitsue Amano, Koichi Fukuda, Mike Hamamoto, James Higa, Tadao Honbo, Saburo Inamasu, James Kawaguchi, Takao Kubota, Albert Shimizu, Isamu Tsuji, Kiyoko Aoki, Furnio Hayashi, Mike Kamiya, James Ki tashima, Chang Miyashiro, and Everett Umeda. Coming all the way from Chicago were Ozzie and Slyvia Kawahara. Both of them recently retired locally but returned to Chicago to spend their leisure time closer to their children. We are now in the station of life when we are susceptible to all kinds of ailments causing us to slow down, diet, and watch tha food we eat. After

! page 7 af- COMPANY NEWS all, the average age of our club membership is about 73 with the oldest in the high seventies and the younger ones in the high sixties, except for Ozzie Kawahara who joined us in New Jersey just before we left for Africa, who is much younger. It's no wonder so many of us are ailing these days. Good health is life's most precious gift, so take good care of your health. To all of you who participated and helped with the reunion, thank you so very much. And if I have inadvertently' omitted your name from the list of donors, please see Rudy Yoshida. until we meet again in 1990 in Kauai, take care. HEADQUARTERS CHAPTER NEWS: Kenichi Suehiro Headquarters Chapter nominated the following as officers for 1990: President - Hideo Kajikawa, Vice President - Kenichi Suehiro, Secretary - Fred Takahashi, Treasurer - Tom Nosse. Our thanks for a job well done to Mike Takahashi who effectively served as our prexy for the last two yeo.rs. We asked him to serve for another year but he declined. The Otagaki's were in Boulder City, Colorado to take in the football game between U of H and Colorado State. I hope they enjoyed the high country - it's for sure they did not enjoy the game. Toehio Yoneyama, our mainland replacement to the 100th Bn and who decided to become a Hawaiian after discharge from the Army, generously donated $50.00 for our Christmas Party. He expressed regrets about not being able to attend, but hoped the members will have a nice party and a happy year end. Many thanks for your many years of donations. As the days, months, and years go by, I find myself thinking of all the things to be done or should be done yet I simply can't find the time to do it. Now I think I have the answer - not procrastination on my part but it's just that I no longer have the strength and pep as in the past. I guess I'll have to hire my grandsonl I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Take care and be in the best of health. KAUAl CHAPTER NEWS: Ben Morimoto It is trying to sit down and think what to report when everything is at a stand still. During the latter part of last month, Mako Takiguchi (president), Muggsy Morikawa, and I called upon Dr. Keith Horinouchi to present our donation to Kauai Veterans Hospital. At our previous meeting with Dr. Horinouchi, we stated that we were deeply concerned with the Long Term Elder ly Unit. The hospital's first concern is the Surgery Unit, and the other programs are secondary. He suggested that serving trays and cabinets could be donated specifically to the Long Term Elderly Unit. Kauai Chapter voted to donate $1, for the purchase of two complete sets. This year, our club has spent a total of $1, for donations. On November 5, the club held the general meeting at the Tip Top Cafe. The agenda was comprised of the report of the Memorial Service and the donation to the hospital. I did not attend this meeting as it was held on the same day that I was suppose to help with my church's Pancake Breakfast. However, it was reported that the attendance was good. The next upcoming event is our Christmas Party on Sunday,December 17 at JJ's Broiler at Anchor Cove at 12 noon. Ladies are requested to bring a, grab bag gift not to exceed $5.00. MAUl CHAPTER NEWS: Tom Nagata Maui Chapter's November 7 dinner meeting was held at Hazel's Cafe, Wailuku. A good turnout was on hand to enjoy dinner and "shoot the bull". Reverend Shuichi 'rengan was also in attendance aftei: an absence of many years. President Miles Shiroma conducted the meeting and, after receiving the secretary's, treasurer's, and committee reports, opened the subject of donating additional funds to sponsor a seat in the Maui Community Arts and Cultural Center auditorium. Veterans of Maui observed Veterans Day with a special service -at 9 a.m. at the Maui Veterans Cemetery, Makawao on Friday, November 10. Also, the same evening, the Maui County Veterans Council sponsored a dinner at the Red Dragon Restaurant. On Saturday morning, November 11, the Sons and Daughters of i;he 442nd. Regimental Combat Team conducted a short service at. the Maui Mall Shopping Center with Maui member Kaoru Moto, recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross Medal, presenting a bouquet of flowers with members of the 100th Infantry Battalion and 442nd Regiment standing at attention. We extend our condolences to the family of active Maui Chapter member Ronald Higashi who passed away at his Kihei home (251 Noe Street) on November 1 after a long illness. He was buried at the National memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (Punchbowl) following a funeral service over ashes at Hosi Garden Mortuary in Honolulu. Our get well wishes go to the following who were recently: Shimanuki, Kaoru Moto, Willie Goo, Mrs. Sue Gushiken, and Mrs. Kamimoto. Goichi Beverly Dues reminder to members: Maui Chapter members paid their 1989 dues to the mother chapter, Honolulu, by the March 31 deadline this year which made us 100% paid up. You can mail the $5.00 Honolulu dues to Club 100 (520 Kamoku Street, Honolulu, Hawaii 96826) by March 31, 1990 or mail the Maui Chapter dues and Honolulu dues ($7.00) to treasurer Tom Nagata at 43 W. Nakea Avenue Kahului, Hawaii beginning in January, since our first Maui Chapter meeting will most likely be in March of next year. (Executive Secretary's Note: To all Club 100 members: Please do not mail in your 1990 dues to the mother club until January Since the dues will be for 1990, I will not actually deposit them until January. Also, since I will be spending the latter part of December closing my records for the year and the early part of January setting up my books for the new year, I would appreciate not having to worry about dues (writing receipts, typing membership cards, etc.) until January. Thank you for your support.) SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CHAPTER NEWS: Tad Hashimoto Eric Abe attended our October meeting and appeared in excellent health. Eric had a heart operation and had a slow recovery. He had not attended meetings for approximately six months. In good spirits, Eric even presided over the meeting and we had an election of officers for the 100th Chapter for 1990: President - Eric Abe, Vice President - Sam Fujikawa, Secretary - Douglas Tanaka, and Treasurer - Harry Fukasawa. Congratulations and let's give them all the support we can. Incidentally, three of our officers have had big heart operations and many present have had other large and major operations not to mention the many members with ailments who are under medication. We are a senior citizens veterans club. Let's try to enjoy life one day at a time for a long time. On Saturday, October 21, it was 100th Chapter Family Night at 7:00 p.m. at 442nd Memorial Hall in Los Angeles, California Tom Kasai and Ben Tagami came in early to set up the tables. Cooks Ben Tagami, Allan Dong, Carlos, and Beverly Picazo came around 3:00 p.m. with supplies to do the cooking for Italian Nite which consisted of spaghetti with clam sauce or regular meat and tomato sauce, chicken cacciatore, fish (red snapper), garlic bread, cauliflower with carrots, salad, and for dessert a large white sheet cake with 'looth Battalion' written on it which was donated by the always generous Sam and Teri Fujikawa, a large tray of brownies and $20.00 donated by Hank and Kaz Yoshitake. Hank and Kaz could not stay as

Ruth Kasai made all of the delicious snacks (rice crackers) that were in bowls on the table. Eric Abe emceed the evening and was looking in the best of health. Al Takahashi played a couple of times on a harmonica. Fuj i Fukasawa was in charge of games and came up with a lot of fun games with many prizes given away. Bingo was played, each card costing $3.00, and every cent went back to the bingo winners plus prizes on every game. Allan Dong called out the numbers. Tom Kasai, Buddy Mamiya, and Fuji Fukusawa helped with the games. One of our guests was Jacob Mason (A Company, 141st Infantry Division), who was a member of the "Lost Battalion" rescued by the looth/442nd R.C.T. After eating, we went into the kitchen and observed Ben Tagami, Tom Kasai, Allan Dong, and Carlos and Beverly Picazo cleaning up. It was a hard job and rough work of doing the cooking and washing the large pots, pans, and utensils, including the thorough clean up of the kitchen. We tha.nk our members and friends who worked so hard. We had a smaller crowd this time and they were: Eric & Irene Abe, Al Takahashi, Kenji & Aileen Yoshino, the ever faithful members always coming a long way: Lloyd & Michi Toda, Toe & Molly Yoshino, Hank Yoshi take (present for only a few minutes), Mas & Elma Takahashi, Monte, May, & Wayne Fujita, Nora Kim, Mastu Furuye, Jim & Haru Ishizawa, Buddy & Lily Mamiya (who brought little Kristin Mamiya and Nikki Kodama), Harry & Fuji Fukasawa, Henry & Fumi Sakato, M/M George Nishinaka and son Andrew, Douglas Tanaka, Tom & Ruth Kasai with their guests Frank & Chieko Ono, Allan Dong, Carlos & Beverly Picazo, Mrs. Howard, Jacob Mason, and Tad & Sue Hashimoto. When the evening ended, most members and friends helped clean up, put away the tables and chairs, swept the floor, and threw out the trash. The place was left in excellent shape. It's wonderful how members, friends, and guests pitch in and help on their own. We have looth Chapter Family Nites twice a year. They are very informal, fun, a chance to see friends, to eat and socialize.. Corne attend our friendly evenings at the 442nd Memorial Hall. On October 21, a fax message was sent to Buddy Mamiya from Mr. Takeshi Teshima (businessman) in Japan. Takeshi was an original Baker Company member of the 100th Infantry Battalion. TO: Mr. Buddy Mamiya FROM: Takeshi Teshima The San Francisco quake, with its after tremors still continuing, has been a great tragedy. I learned of the disaster while in Europe. Although you are far away from the epicentre, we are praying from Japan for the safety of your beloved ones who may have been affected. P.S. Buddy, please pass (this) on to the loath boys in the area Our thanks to Mr. Teshima for his concern. Incidentally, we heard a little later that Japan had some large quakes. Our members hope all is well with you and that no damage was done. In October 1989, Eric Abe, who had a major heart operation about six months ago but is feeling up to par now, donated $ to our 100th chapter in celebration of life and to express his gratitude to the members who were concerned about his recovery from the surgery. We thank you so very much and it was a happy time for all of us to see you get well. Thanks Eric and Irene, and take care. The holidays are upon us and I wasn't suppose to be around to celebrate and enjoy. Our Southern California looth Infantry Battalion members and friends wish all our friends, both near and far, Seasons Greetings, Happy Holidays, and a Healthy Happy New Year! Take Carel EXECUTIVE SECRETARY'S NOTE: Since there was some extra space, I thought that you would enjoy reading the "Iro-Iro" section of the Japan Airlines Newsletter (volume 89-05). Paul's disclaimer: I am not affiliated with JAL, nor do I know anyone working there. The last airplane I flew on was the Army's C-130. It was strictly a no frills flight: no movies, no stewardesses, no music (Walkmans) allowed, only two porta-potties onboard, and, worse of all, no complimentary bag of peanuts. It was so cold in the C-130 that I had to sleep in a. plafjtic trash bag to keep warm. Anyway, enjoy JAL's "Iro-Iro".

Iro-Irq The oldest tree in the world is in Japan's Kagoshima Prefecture. The 100-foot-tall cedar.is 7,200 years old, but may not live too much longer; tourists are stripping away its bark as souvenirs. Ski enthusiasts can do their thing in downtown Tokyo these days, even in summer. The Heineken Ski Resort, an indoor/outdoor bar, has a "moving mountain" covered with flnely crushed white stone, surrounded by real pine trees and waiters decked out in ski clothes. You can practice your stem turns and show off your Descente duds--and have a beer--without having to actually deal with nature lf you think all 'Japanese are workaholics, you should know that 1989's All Japan Aerobics Championship, which was televised, attracted 1,100 men and women Following non-alcoholic beer and wine, Shirahana Brewing Co. just introduced a sake with one percent alcohol. It's sold as a soft drink McDonald's Japan sold million hamburgers last year, representing three for every. man, woman and child in the country. NOw, in a rare move of accommodation, the chain has introduced "teriyajc.i hamburgers" to the JaJ?anese fast-food consumers.... "Do you have the correct tj.me and atmospheric pressure?" Proud owners of Casio's new Digital Barometer BM-100WJ can answer yes, and for about $70 you too can get this timepieoe/barometer (which,.incidentally, is alse an altimeter and a water depth. sounding device) and thus no longer have an excuse for getting caught in. the rain Cyanamid Japan, makers of 'Combat,' have sponsored a contest for the largest cockroach in Japan. You laugh, but the grand prize is over $700. Only dead ones accepted.. ln another (slightly less repulsive) contest, judges chose a Miss Naho Chikaoka as The Perfect June Bride, even though they "were not too impressed at her performance in the salad making test"... And speakin9 of weddings, the Marriage Man's Academy recently opened J.n Osaka, Japan, to teach hitherto unsuccessful wife seekers what they are doing wrong. The school's five ma~or precepts for getting the girl are: Be understanding; be sj.ncere; be confj.dent; don't fawn on women, and don't belittle women (which we guess means no wise-cracks about the salad)......'n *\" page 10 CLOB Kamoku Street Honolulu, Hawaii NONPROFIT ORG POSTAGE PAID HONOLULU HI PERMIT I 158 ~.
