3 CLEARWATER SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION RECOGNIZE EAGLE SCOUT Eagle Scout Matthew Allen Smith, son of Alvin and Rhonda Smith of Hudson, was presented with an Eagle Scout Certificate of Recognition from the Clearwater Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution for outstanding leadership and citizenship as demonstrated by his attainment of the rank of Eagle Scout. SAR Compatriot Art Hays presented the certificate at Matthew's Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony on September 14 at The Angelus, which sponsors BSA Troop 79. The Angelus is a non-profit corporation that operates a full-time residential facility for the severely handicapped. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, Matthew researched, planned and provided leadership to a group of scouts and other volunteers with the construction of 10 rugged benches for use as additional seating at various functions and events held at The Angelus. The project took 270 hours for Matthew and the volunteers to complete. Matthew has been active in scouting for 13 years, starting as a Tiger Cub with Pack 79. He joined Troop 79 in 2006 and served as a senior patrol leader. He is also a member of the Timuquan Lodge 340 of the Order of the Arrow. During his years with the Boy Scouts, Matthew participated in numerous outdoor activities and has extensive camping experience at various wilderness areas. He became a PADI-certified SCUBA diver at a troop camping excursion to Key West. He has earned a total of 27 merit badges. Matthew volunteers extensively at The Angelus with the annual picnics, the fireworks display, haunted house events and concerts. Matthew, age 19, is self-employed and currently resides in New Port Richey. He aspires to become a firefighter/paramedic. Pictured l to r: Eagle Scout Matthew Smith and SAR Compatriot Art Hays. Each year it seems it gets harder to find Compatriots who will stand up and take a leadership role
4 in the Clearwater Chapter. It takes leadership to just have a luncheon. Let alone having a speaker each month, to make the contacts to give out the awards to the school children. It isn t magic. I know that many have served in the past but there are new members who haven t stepped forward to do their part. Now is the time to do so. This is a meeting of the Board of Management where all things SAR are discussed and decided. It is a good fellowship event. Sick Call As of this writing, Hugh Clark, David Kitchen, Bob Wilson need our thoughts and prayers. Any member who goes to the hospital or becomes ill, please let one of the Officers know so we can show our concerns about you. It is once again time to support the Ladies Auxiliary by bringing items for the baskets to be raffled at the January BOM. We will have two more meetings to respond to this request. Holiday Season is the theme for the basket. We have three meetings between now and the Winter Meeting on January 24-25, If you are attending the October 17 meeting, please consider bringing an item to help fill a basket to be raffled at the Annual meeting. This is the Auxiliaries main fund raiser and we should support them as much as possible. If you would rather give a donation of money, give it to Mary Kitchen.
