Presidents Message Dear Fellow Compatriots, 2016 was a very eventful year for the Cincinnati Chapter.

1 Cincinnati Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Cincinnati PATRIOT Volume 31, Issue 1, CCSAR Inducts New Officers The Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (CCSAR) inducted a new board of officers for the 2017 term. Chapter President is now John H. Jack Bredenfoerder; 1 st Vice President is Turner Lee Wilkerson, III ; 2 nd Vice President is Larry W. Collins; Secretary is Gary L. Duffield; Franz Ott, II remains as Registrar; as well as Michael Blum as Treasurer. George H. Stewart, Jr. and Kenneth G. Carpenter continue in their positions as Historian and Chaplain, respectively. BOM At Large are Gregory Ballman, Jeff Hartman, James Houston, Brad Jarard, and Shaun Smith. Presidents Message Dear Fellow Compatriots, 2016 was a very eventful year for the Cincinnati Chapter. President Mike Gunn has led us to even higher levels of membership and participation in the community. Our own Col. Don McGraw and Lee Wilkerson are the OHSSAR president and secretary, respectively. Compatriot Jim Schaffer serves as the OHSSAR trustee to the NSSAR and Past Vice President General and Minuteman Paul Wilke continues to offer guidance and direction to the chapter. I am honored and humbled to been chosen to serve as your 2017 president and I sincerely hope to continue to contribute to the stellar work that these men have laid out for us promises to be the year of member engagement. The officers and Board of Management (BOM) will be developing new plans to build patriotism and strengthen our fraternal bond. Please know that we welcome all ideas that will contribute to this effort. We are especially interested in the engagement of our newer and junior members. The NSSAR has recently established a new member mentor program; it is our plan that the CCSAR will adopt and build on this program. The BOM will be meeting for a planning meeting at my home on Saturday, January 14 from 10 AM 3:00PM. Even if you are not a current member of the BOM you are welcome to attend. Please just send me a note of your intention to attend and we will send you the meeting materials and agenda. Many Compatriots received Certificates of Appreciation and Distinguished Service awards among other awards for their service over the past year. 3 CCSAR awards Dr. Kathleen Ballman, DPN with SAR Emergency Medical Service Commendation Medal At the Annual Awards Dinner held at the Maketewah Country Club on Saturday, December 10, 2016 the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution's (CCSAR) President Michael Gunn had the honor of presenting the prestigious SAR Emergency Medical Service Commendation Medal to Dr. Kathleen Ballman, DNP, APRN, ACNP-BC, CEN, EMP-P. She is an Associate Professor of Clinical Nursing and Coordinator of the Adult-Gerontology/Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Programs at the University of Cincinnati. Kathe s rich background and experience in Emergency Medicine began at the Bethesda Paramedic Training program when the program was established in Kathe was a driving force in its origin. At the time, there was a tremendous and unfulfilled need in the region for paramedic education as the various public fire services beginning to expand their EMS into paramedic services, and she was there. Kathe is a true advocate for EMS. She became an EMT (later paramedic) to work in the new Bethesda Paramedic Training Program as a clinical instructor, but soon made the program her own as its director. Over her career, she has been dedicated to making sure that her students are the best in the business. She teaches that individual patient assessment and care are the most important aspect of para-medicine, She has created a faculty "team" effort in paramedic instruction, where there was none before. The students (and faculty) thrive under this approach. It would be impossible to count the number of qualified paramedics in our area who owe their professional success to Kathe's diligence, forward thinking and genuine concern for both students and their patients. Although the Paramedic program is no longer active, Kathe remains a staunch supporter of strong and competent Emergency Medical Services personnel. And, due to her decades of diligence and polished expertise our community has an extraordinary number of highly qualified paramedics and other first responders. This is now well into a second generation of these medical service providers. Kathe is certainly worthy and deserving of the SAR Emergency Medical Services Commendation Medal for her decades of service in the field of emergency medical services and practice. We, the compatriots of the CCSAR, invite the community to join us in this acclamation that we bestow on her!

5 62 nd Pearl Harbor Memorial Ceremony Sunday, December 4th CCSAR President Mike Gunn and Compatriots Bradley Jarard and Jack Bredenfoerder posted colors and marched in the 62nd Annual Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade and Ceremony. The ceremony concluded on a barge at Anderson Ferry. The event was held in conjunction with the Chambers Hautman Budde American Legion Post 534 and the Hamilton County Sheriffs Pipes & Drums at Noon, with 70 people in attendance. 6 Wreaths Across America On Saturday December 17, Compatriots of the Cincinnati SAR joined the Ladies of the John Reily Chapter DAR to celebrate Wreaths Across America at the Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton, Ohio. National SAR Trustee James Schaffer brought greetings to the assembly. CCSAR compatriots and friends in attendance laying wreaths were National Trustee James Schaffer, OHSSAR Secretary Lee Wilkerson III, CCSAR President Jack Bredenfoerder, Michael Blum, Bob Bowers, Miss Anna Insprucker, and Paul and Valerie Wilke. After the ceremony the Ladies of the John Reily DAR Chapter laid a wreath at the grave of John Reily and the CCSAR Nolan Carson Color Guard provided a flintlock salute. Following both ceremonies, The compatriots attended a luncheon hosted by the John Reily DAR Chapter at Ryans Pub in downtown Hamilton. New Member Inducted The Chapter would like to welcome our newest member, Compatriot Jeffrey Woltz and his one-year-old son Jackson. Jeff and Jackson share Patriot ancestor John Woltz. Jeff is a teacher and football coach at Colerain High School in western Hamilton County and is interested in further research of his other Patriot ancestors and being active in our Chapter.

7 Member Profile John H. (Jack) Bredenfoerder 1. Career Retired design director and consultant for Landor Associates. My specialty was color design, strategy and forecasting. I continue as a chairholder and past president of Color Marketing Group (CMG). Color Marketing Group, founded in 1962, is a not-for-profit, international Association of color design professionals involved in the use of color as it applies to the profitable marketing of goods and services. 2. How long have you been a SAR Member? Since August 2, What Committee Positions have you held? For CCSAR: Americanism Poster and Brochure Chairman, Audit Committee Chairman, Webmaster, Chapter Secretary, 2 nd VP, 1 st VP and Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard member. Designed the Chapter Flag For the OHSSAR: Chairman of the Fundraising Committee, Chairman of the D.G. High Oration Committee, Member of the Finance Committee, Member of the OHSSAR Color Guard. For the SAR Germany Society: I will become Secretary -Treasurer next spring. For NSSAR: Serve on the Joseph Rumbaugh Oration Committee, The Americanism Committee and the NSSAR Color Guard 4. Where did you grow up? Mariemont, Ohio I m a Cincinnati native. Most of my mother s family came to Cincinnati after the Revolution in the 1790s and early 1800s. My father s family came to the Cincinnati area from Germany in in the 1850s and 1860s. 5. What is your current residence and family? I live in Kenwood with my lovely wife Laurie and son Charlie. 6. What other Lineage Societies do you belong to? SAR is my first and only so far. The SAR keeps me busy enough! 7. What is your best family history discovery? My Moore Howell family line dates back to two of the early founders of Long Island, NY Edward Howell (arrived in Boston in 1639) and the Reverend John Moore (arrived in Massachusetts abt ) The Howell family is of Plantagenet lineage. My Hopper (Hoppe) family lineage dates to a Dutch trader, Andries Willemzen Hoppe, who arrived in New Amsterdam about What is your best genealogical advice? Be persistent, patient, and take a break now and then. New discoveries often come after you come back and look at your family from a new perspective. Member Profile is a new feature this year. The new Board of Management members will be featured first and then we will see where we go from there.

8 Chapter History - Compatriot George Stewart, Chapter Historian The OHSSAR D.G High Oration Fund is one of three Ohio Society endowment funds. It was originally founded in Ohio and continues as one of our most established youth programs. Published in the SAR Magazine of October 1946 was the following article: Though the generosity of Compatriot Douglass G. High of Cincinnati, the Ohio Society is authorized to give an award of $100 to a student in Ohio who can qualify as the best informed as to United States history on a basis of grade and elements of good citizenship. This will be known as the Douglass G. High Award.
