1 A P R I L / M A Y the Hornet s Nest Buzz Mecklenburg Chapter, North Carolina Society, Sons of the American Revolution The 234 th Anniversary of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse March 15, 2015 Members of our chapter attended the 234 th anniversary of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in Greensboro, NC today. Other chapter members in attendance included Jim Wood, Dave Alls, Ken Luckey, Neil Hohmann, Bill Anderson & Jay Joyce. Save the Date for These Upcoming Events! William Davie March 28, 2015 We are sponsoring a wreath laying ceremony to honor the William R. Davie Park. State Meeting April 18-19, 2015 Our own chapter past president Tim Berly will be installed as our new NCSSAR president. Lincoln County May 2, 2015 Join us for the Lincoln County presentation of 1775 The American Spring.
2 A P R I L / M A Y What s Going On? January to April 2015 have been very busy months for many members of our chapter. The 234 th Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens Mecklenburg chapter members attended the 234 th Anniversary of the Battle of Cowpens during frigid 25- degree temperatures and brisk winds. Mecklenburg chapter members Jim Wood, Dave Alls, Ray Maxson, Ken Luckey, Neil Hohmann, Tom Phlegar and Jay Joyce participated in the Color Guard. In the photo at the left, chapter member Neil Hohmann stands at attention during the Cowpens ceremony. The 234 th Anniversary of Cowan s Ford The Mecklenburg chapter sponsored the 234 th Anniversary of the Battle of Cowan's Ford at Hopewell Presbyterian in Huntersville, NC. Representatives from the SAR, DAR, SR, Children of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of XVIII Century and descendants of General William Lee Davidson participated in the day's ceremonies. In the photo at right, chapter Color Guard Commander David Alls stands his post for the rendering of honors.

Famous French ally and Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette was our chapter's very special guest at our annual President's Day Community Dinner! 142 members of the community, along with Mecklenburg chapter members, braved the record-setting 9 degree temperatures to meet, mingle and listen to the incredible history and story of Major General Lafayette. Very special guests were in attendance, including NSSAR Treasurer General J. Michael Tomme and his wife Cilla (2nd and 4th from the right), NCSSAR President Ken Wilson (on left), and SCSSAR President Dan Woodruff (on right) and his wife Sherilyn. In the photo below, these dignitaries pose with Marquis de Lafayette. As is tradition at the annual President's Day Community Dinner, we welcomed to new members to the chapter, Patrick Quinn and Larry Brundick. And our second tradition on this night is to award our chapter Eagle Scout Scholarship, which was earned by and presented to Eagle Scout Benjamin Gibson of Troop 11 in Charlotte. 4 W I L L I A M R. D A V I E H O N O R E D March 28, 2015 The Mecklenburg chapter sponsored a wreath laying ceremony for Patriot William R. Davie today at the William R. Davie Park in Charlotte. Along with the Mecklenburg Parks & Rec Department and the Mecklenburg Historical Association, the chapter honored this brave Patriot who fought in the Battle of Charlotte, served as the tenth Governor of North Carolina, and is credited as being one of the founding fathers of the University of North Carolina. SAR and DAR chapters from across the state participated in the ceremony. In the photo below, past state and chapter president Jim Wood renders honors. In the photo at right, historian Jim Williams portrays William R. Davie and addresses the audience.

The Mecklenburg chapter was awarded the 1st Place Ribbon as the large chapter winner in the Americanism contest for Our chapter members earned numerous individual awards during the weekend.
