LAKE-SUMTER CHAPTER OF THE The Lake-Sumter Gazette Editor: Bob Beightol From the President s Desk A Message from Jerry Hardwich, President Here we are in the hot, humid doldrums of Summer. We are expecting that all of our members are having a wonderful Summer, and taking some time to enjoy your families. Having completed the celebration of our Independence Day, followed by a multitude of barbecues, and picnics, it is time to prepare for our Labor Day festivities, and moving into the Fall

months of the calendar. We can all look forward to a break in the oppressive heat. When the Summer break started, I began calling members who had seen a lapse in their enrollment. I was able to connect with several members who have asked to renew their membership. I also found that a number of members had passed away, and have passed this information on to the Florida State Sons of the American Revolution for the updating of records. We are now in the process of contacting our Executive Committee for their input in the operations of the chapter. Key in this process is an understanding where we need additional help to support our Executive Committee. I am asking the Executive Committee to let me know where additional support is needed. If you have a few hours a month, and would like to get to know some of your Compatriots better, and help out in some area, please contact me or one of our officers. We are trying to get a better appreciation of your interests in the chapter. What can we do to improve our chapter? What are your personal needs regarding the chapter? Do you have male family members, any sons, grandsons, brothers, nephews, or cousins that we could extend an offer to join the SAR? They are entitled to membership. Please let me know. If you haven t been attending recently, what can we do to aid you in being more active? Some of our members may no longer be able to drive, so possibly we could develop a car pool to get you to our meetings. I will be giving you a call to see what we can do for you whatever your situation. Our Patriot ancestors saw changes taking place during the Summer. As we have experienced, the weather continued to get warmer with rain showers beginning most afternoons. Tending the crops for many of our Patriot ancestors continued. Attention begins to turn once again to the thoughts of taking up arms to liberate us from the jaws of the English. Several events that occurred during this month in our Patriot s history include: On August 2, 1776, in Philadelphia, most of the 55 members of the Continental Congress signed the parchment copy of the Declaration of Independence. On August 16, 1777, the Battle of Bennington, VT, occurred as militiamen from Vermont, aided by troops, wiped out a detachment of 800 German- Hessians sent by British General Burgoyne to seize horses. 2

As I mentioned last month, as I close this message, and the Summer progresses, please remember the recent celebration of our independence, Independence Day, and what it meant over 200 years ago in planting the seeds of patriotism. Our patriot relatives knew what was meant by these words. God bless our patriot relatives for what they did to persevere and save our country. Our Patriot ancestors continued to persevere, and toil both in the fields, and on the battle front. May their memories of service to the fragile nation that was being built live on. In the words of Samuel Adams, in 1779: "A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader." All the best to each and every member. Good health, prosperity, and happiness. Enjoy the Summer, and we look forward to seeing you in October. Meet Our Members Compatriot Robert Lee Beightol. Compatriot Beightol was born in Oil City, PA, on October 12, 1948, to Robert Earl Beightol and Helen Margie (Moody) Beightol. He was raised in northwest Pennsylvania, primarily in Pleasantville, where he attended the local school until graduating in June 1966 and then off to college until being drafted into the US Army in December During his time with the US Army, Compatriot Beightol spent the first 13 months in training to obtain Special Forces qualification as an Engineering/ Demolition Specialist. In 1972 a career change occurred to the field of Criminal Investigation as Compatriot Beightol became a Special Agent with the US Army 3

Criminal Investigation Division Command (USACIDC). As a member of the USACIDC, after acquisition of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice and graduation from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Police Officer s Academy, in Washington D.C, Compatriot Beightol spent nearly 17 years as a Special Agent or Special Agent in Charge, with the US Army with assignments in the United States, Europe, Asia and South America with a primary specialty of drug suppression. Compatriot Beightol retired from the US Army as the Special Agent in Charge of the Ft Rucker Resident Agency, Ft Rucker, AL, in June 1989 at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4. Following his retirement from the US Army, Compatriot Beightol owned and operated Private Investigative companies, specializing in insurance defense investigations, in the states of Georgia, Indiana and Florida. Following the retirement of both Compatriot Beightol and his wife of 46 years, Pamela Joyce (Rumbaugh) Beightol, they moved from Pensacola to Mount Dora, FL, to be near their only child, Teresa, her husband Ian and two grandchildren, Carlee and Eric. In his retirement, he became interested in his ancestry which resulted in his being inducted into the Lake-Sumter Chapter of the NSSAR in September of His primary patriot was identified as Baptist minister Isham Fuqua of Bedford County, VA, who took an oath of allegiance to the United States in 1777 and acted in the capacity of citizen/ soldier. The original list bearing his patriot s name was found in the attic of a DAR member and is currently in the archives of the NSDAR, Washington DC. As a Baptist minister, following the war, Isham Fuqua was instrumental in establishing churches in Virginia and Tennessee prior to his death in Tennessee in Compatriot Beightol is currently a Member at Large of the Chapter s Executive Committee, Editor of the Lake- Sumter SAR Chapter newsletter, Chairman of the Veteran s Recognition Committee and Chairman of the Publicity Committee. 6 Did a Cane Creek Quaker Outwit Lord Cornwallis? By Allan Lane Recently my wife and I, on a genealogy quest, visited the Cane Creek Meeting House, a Quaker Church in central North Carolina. I have several kinsmen buried in the Church cemetery, and wanted to find out more about them. There, I had the pleasure of meeting the Church historian, 89- year-old John Allen, a fellow Compatriot and member of the Alamance Battleground SAR Chapter in Burlington, NC. John is himself a descendant of colonial settlers in that area, and is a keen and active researcher and historian. After providing such information as was available on my kinsmen, John gave me a tour of the cemetery and provided much information about historical events that occurred there. The Cane Creek Quaker Church, properly referred to as the Society of Friends Meeting House, was founded in 1751 by Quakers who resettled from Pennsylvania. Their leader and founder of the Church was Simon Dixon, who quickly established a mill and stone dwelling on a nearby stream. Dixon later was a participant in the Regulator Rebellion, a widespread revolt of farmers against corrupt British rule. Dixon s signature appears on Regulator Advertisement No. 8, a 1768 petition to Royal Governor Tryon for redress of grievances. When the rebellion turned violent in 1768, Dixon s mill served as a rendezvous point for hundreds of Regulators who descended on the county seat of Hillsboro and destroyed court records, beat corrupt officials, and helped set the stage for our upcoming War of Independence. The Regulator movement was destroyed by Governor Tryon in a battle between Royal militia and roughly two thousand Regulators at the nearby Battle of Alamance in May Although it is unclear whether or not Simon Dixon was a participant in the violent aspects of the Regulator Rebellion, he was certainly known by the British as a Regulator. This fact became significant to Dixon and his family in March 1781, when Cornwallis encamped at Cane Creek in the aftermath of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Cornwallis occupied Dixon s house and mill as his headquarters. Dixon had fled the area for fear he would be hung by Cornwallis based on his known association with the former Regulator Rebellion. 6

According to local history and a narrative written later by a descendant, Dixon jimmied his mill stone before he fled in order to keep the British from grinding grain they were seizing from local farmers. Cornwallis army was living off the land, and this one act of resistance may have compelled Cornwallis to move on before his army was sufficiently rested and provisioned. Dixon returned to his house and mill after Cornwallis moved to refit his army at Wilmington, NC. The next stop for Cornwallis after Wilmington was Yorktown. Simon Dixon is recognized as a patriot by the SAR based on material support he furnished during the Revolution. He is buried at the Cane Creek cemetery. His interesting tombstone is a grist wheel which bears an SAR grave marker to the left of the plaque. Plaque reads: IN MEMORY OF SIMON DIXON BORN IN PENNSYLVANIA 1728 PIONEER SETTLER WHO BOUGHT THESE LANDS FROM THE LORDS PROPRIETORS OF NORTH CAROLINE 1751 DIED APRIL 1781 AND OF HIS WIFE ELIZABETH ALLEN DIXON BORN IN PENNSYLVANIA 1728 DIED 1793 BOTH WERE CHARTER MEMBERS OF CANE CREEK MEETING ORGANIZED 1751 ERECTED 1725 John pointed out one more interesting artifact in the cemetery. The Cane Creek Meeting House was used as a hospital for wounded British soldiers during Cornwallis occupation of the site. An unknown number are interred in the cemetery, and a twentieth century monument memorializes their burial using a grist wheel similar to that of Simon Dixon. 7

Memorial to British Soldiers Remains of Dixon s Mill How gratifying it is to dig into the past and find such nuggets in unexpected places. Our thanks to John Allen and so many others for their work in preserving our rich heritage and history. Now that I Have it, Where do I Wear it? Editor s Note: This article was found on Page 10, Summer 2014 Edition of the Florida Patriot, author unknown. I thought it worthy of reprinting. 8

This is a question that is asked by new Compatriots and others after being awarded a new medal or in some instances purchasing a medal. The question has been asked frequently since the introduction of the Distinguished Service Medals and the Roger Sherman Medals. Every NSSAR approved medal has a designated SAR Precedence and a medal is worn according to the medal s precedence to other medals. A specific medal s SAR Precedence, may be found in Volume V: Individual Medals and Awards in the latest revision of the NSSAR Official Handbook (edition ). This newest version of the NSSAR Handbook may be found on the National website: This site contains the post 2014 Spring NSSAR Leadership Meeting revisions of the 2013 edition. The Distinguished Service Medals (DSM) have three different precedence positions: the National Society DSM is designated number 6, the State DSM is designated number 9 and the Chapter DSM is designated number 11. The Chapter DSM is now placed before the SAR Meritorious Service Medal (precedence number 12). The Roger Sherman Medals (RSM) have three different precedence positions: the National Society Gold RSM is designated number 13, the District and State Silver RSM is designated number 14 and the Chapter Bronze RSM is designated number 25. Another new medal and award for women is the Lydia Darragh Medal and that has received precedence number 36. For specific information on the precedence position of medals issued by State Societies commemorating specific events such as National Congresses or National in recognition of specific campaign funds or youth programs, individuals should consult the National Handbook and specific State Societies to confirm the precedence order within the State s precedence grouping. Whenever receiving a new Medal Award, one should always consult the NSSAR Official Handbook to verify the Medal s precedence order and wear it correctly and proudly. Chapter History 2014 Newsletter Award In May 2014, at the FLSSAR BOM, the results of the Richard Q Fowler Newsletter Award Contest were announced. Winning Fifth Place in the contest was the Lake-Sumter SAR Gazette and its Editor, Compatriot Frank Nolte, who passed away in September The award was brought to the attention of Chapter President Jerry Hardwich when he was notified by FLSSAR Treasurer Dick Young, that a check in the amount of $15.00, presented to the Chapter in 2014, as an award, had never been cashed. A review of the 2014 s and 9

Chapter membership meetings minutes, failed to find any report of the contest results; however, an article on page 16 of the Summer 2014 Edition of The Florida Patriot, which can be viewed on the FLSSAR web site, was found describing the contest and award. In addition, Chapter Historian Richard Offutt located the actual Certificate amongst Chapter records. A Copy of the Certificate is attached at the end of this article for your information. The check was not found, however, a replacement check has been issued and the money soon will find its way into the Chapter coffers. As I reviewed the preceding information, two questions came to mind. The first question was Did Compatriot Nolte know he had received the award? This question actually turned out to be easily answered. As most of us know, Compatriot Nolte was an exceptional photographer. In the May 2014 issue of the Lake-Sumter SAR Chapter Gazette, Compatriot Nolte reported on the FLSSAR BOM. Included within that article was a link to his Flicker web site which held over 100 photographs which he himself had taken at the BOM. One photo was of the representatives of all of the SAR Chapters who won awards in the Newsletter contest that year. Clearly visible in that photograph is then Chapter President Scott Bushnell holding the winning Certificate which bore the name of the editor, Frank Nolte establishing that he did know of the award. The second question is impossible to answer. Why didn t Compatriot Nolte, Editor of the award winning newsletter, report the award in the newsletter? That we can t answer for sure, but I suspect it had something to do with Compatriot Nolte s inability to blow his own horn or perhaps even that he thought he should have done better, both of which would be compatible with his personality. Having looked at other Chapter Newsletters, with an unbiased eye, of course, I believe that Nolte s newsletters should have been ranked higher in the contest. Whatever the reason, Compatriot Nolte should have reported the award in the newsletter and at the membership meeting so the rest of us would know a little more as to how we compare to other Chapters in the state. Part of our responsibility as members of the SAR is to perpetuate the history of the American Revolution, its participants and now their descendants. To that end, we are reporting on a bit of our own history which should have been reported when It happened in As with all of his photographs, this photo could not be copied or shared with others outside of the newsletter, however, you can visit the Chapter web site and find the photo in the May 2014 edition of the Lake-Sumter Gazette. Congratulations Compatriot Nolte and thank you for your many contributions. 10

Certificate from Chapter Historical Files DAR Box Tops/ Labels for Education: Campbell s is Back!!! Information received from Ocklawaha DAR Chapter Past Regent, Kay Nelson, disclosed that the Campbell Soup Company has continued their soup label education program for at least one more year. She has requested that members of the Lake-Sumter SAR Chapter continue to collect box tops and soup labels for their program. Box tops and labels will be collected at each Chapter meeting and be provided to the DAR. A list of accepted box tops is included as an attachment to the end of this newsletter. Please add Campbell s labels to your list. 11

Publicity Committee Our Publicity Committee is currently manned by Compatriots Bob Beightol and Bob Moody. In the upcoming year we hope to increase our efforts to publicize our Chapter which will include submitting photographs of our public SAR events with publicity/ news releases. Currently, we are operating under the assumption that Compatriots, in our photographs taken at public events, imply their consent to have their images published. When, and if, this policy changes we will inform the members. If you have an opinion on this policy and would like to make it known, please send via to the committee chairman, Bob Beightol, at or by phone at A procedure for obtaining permission from non-members for publication of their images in our photographs submitted with publicity/ news releases, is under evaluation. We would also like to encourage all members with ideas for publicizing our Chapter to contact either Bob. Book Review Editor s Note: Once again, Compatriot Tom Wilcox has provided information on a new book acquisition available at the Leesburg Public library that he feels the members might find interesting. If you get a chance, give it a read, give us your review, and then give Tom a thank you for his help. Valient Ambition by Nathaniel Philbrick From the New York Times bestselling author of In The Heart of the Sea, comes a surprising account of the middle years of the American Revolution, and the tragic relationship between George Washington and Benedict Arnold. In September 1776, the vulnerable Continental Army under an unsure George Washington (who had never commanded a large force in battle) evacuates New York after a devastating defeat by the British Army. Three weeks later, near the Canadian 12

border, one of his favorite generals, Benedict Arnold, miraculously succeeds in postponing the British naval advance down Lake Champlain that might have ended the war. Four years later, as the book ends, Washington has vanquished his demons and Arnold has fled to the enemy after a foiled attempt to surrender the American fortress at West Point to the British. After four years of war, America is forced to realize that the real threat to its liberties might not come from without but from within. Valiant Ambition is a complex, controversial, and dramatic portrait of a people in crisis and the war that gave birth to a nation. The focus is on loyalty and personal integrity, evoking a Shakespearean tragedy that unfolds in the key relationship of Washington and Arnold, who is an impulsive but sympathetic hero whose misfortunes at the hands of self-serving politicians fatally destroy his faith in the legitimacy of the rebellion. As a country wary of tyrants suddenly must figure out how it should be led, Washington s unmatched ability to rise above the petty politics of his time enables him to win the war that really matters. Should you have an interest or know someone who may be interested, please contact Compatriot Moody, President Hardwich or any other of the Chapter officers. Educational Programs: Volunteers are also needed in almost all of our ongoing education programs. Should you have time or a desire to enhancing the lives of our young people, or simply have questions as to how you could help, please contact Compatriot Ralph Nelson or any of the Chapter officers. 14 FLSSAR The Florida Patriot The Florida Patriot is the FLSSAR magazine which is published quarterly. Upon publication, the magazines are added to the FLSSAR web site and are available for viewing by everyone via the internet. If you read the Summer Edition for 2016, you may have come across the article reprinted below, which concerned our own Lake-Sumter SAR Chapter. The news was first announced by Past President Ralph Nelson at our May meeting, however, it is always a pleasure seeing our Chapter successes published in someone else s publication. Extracted from Page 17, Summer Edition, 2016: The Americanism Poster Contest is one of six SAR Youth (3rd - 5th grade) Award Contests. Our Florida Society had three winning chapter entries this year for the contest. The first place winner ($300) was Megan Norwicki from the Clearwater Chapter and the winner from 125 chapter entries. The second place winner ($200) was Riley Crawford from the Withlachoee Chapter from 191 chapter entries. The third place winner ($100) was Laney Uzealko from the Lake Sumter Chapter and the winner from 25 chapter entries. For next year the Florida Society theme will be on "Revolutionary War People". Our Florida Society theme will be "The First Captain of the United States Navy". I would also like to once again see chapter entries for our participation in our Middle School Brochure Contest for based on our permanent theme of "The Founding Documents of the United States of America". Photographs with the article depict the three winning posters with Ms Uzealko s being held by Past President Nelson. This and That Our Web Site: /lakesumtersar.org The Florida Patriot Electronically: Several years ago, FLSSAR opted to transmit The Florida Patriot electronically instead of the slower and more expensive US mail. The US mail delivery was, and is, still an option if necessary; however, members are encouraged to use the electronic version. Savings are applied to other SAR projects as well as funding for the Endowment Fund from which our 14

Chapter can obtain funds from the FLSSAR to help fund our own projects. If you still receive a hard copy of The Florida Patriot, reconsider, if possible. The magazine can be easily accessed via the FLSSAR web site and clicking on Patriot Magazine in the menu along the left side of the home page of the web site. Military Service Awards: The Veteran s Recognition Committee believes it has identified all Chapter members with military service and are deserving of an SAR military service medal. If we missed you please notify the committee chairman, Compatriot Beightol at bogi0104@bellsouth.net. Biographies and Photos: Just a reminder that the Lake-Sumter Chapter web site has areas for both a personal biography and photo for each member. We are all looking forward to seeing yours! For an example, sign onto the Lake Sumter SAR web site; go to Member s Area ; click on List Members ; and then click on Bushnell. Participation Points: Compatriots, remember the importance of tracking your points. Eligible events with point values can be found under the Admin section of the Lake Sumter SAR Chapter website.
