1 January 2014 Lafayette Chapter News Established April 1960 What s Inside From the President 2 Events 3 Memorial 3 Membership 4 Photos 4 Invitation 5 Contacts 5 About Us 6 Officers President: Ted Kuster President Elect Lucien Rice Secretary: Don Adams Treasurer: Greg Landon Registrar: Al Coleman Historian: James Evans Chaplain: Ben Mann Lafayette Chapter, Kentucky Society Sons of the American Revolution September Meeting Compatriots Our next meeting will be on Constitution Day, September 17, at the Georgetown College Craille Student Center, the Jones-Hall- Nelson Suite, Georgetown, Kentucky at 6:30pm. The cost of the meal is $15 per person with the check being made out to the Lafayette Chapter SAR. Reservations in the form of your check need to reach me by September 12th at 1165 North Middletown Road, Paris, KY The meal will be breast of chicken in a lemon caper white wine sauce. It includes a salad, two accompaniments and a dessert. Also included are dinner rolls, regular and decaffeinated coffee and iced tea. If needed a special diet can be provided but needs to be ordered ahead of time. Spouses and other guests are welcome and encouraged. If you know others that don't receive , please make them aware of this meeting. The location of the Craille Student Center is on College Street (which is parallel to Main Street) next to the Giddengs Circle between Military Street and Memorial Drive. Parking is in the area and a parking lot is across the street. Our speaker for the evening will be Judge Vanessa Dickson who will speak to us on the Constitution. A brief business meeting will be held to discuss officers for 2015 and other business. Our thanks go out to Rollie Graves of the John Scott Chapter for arranging this event. I look forward to seeing you as we welcome Judge Dickson. Let's have a nice crowd to hear her program. The meeting, held at the Blue Licks State Park Lodge, was attended by Al Coleman, Barney Judd, Don Adams, Mike Sullivan, Ben Mann, Glen Newman, Jim Evans, Doug Harper, Thomas Stephens, Del White,

2 Lafayette Chapter News Page 2 of 6 From the President SAR President s Message for August 2014 August 16, 2014, was a busy day for the Lafayette Chapter KSSAR. It was our state summer meeting and the ceremony to honor our patriots that served at the Battle of Blue Licks with Daniel Boone. The meeting, held at the Blue Licks State Park Lodge, was attended by Al Coleman, Barney Judd, Don Adams, Mike Sullivan, Ben Mann, Glen Newman, Jim Evans, Doug Harper, Thomas Stephens, Del White, Austin Paul, Joe Jones and Ted Kuster. Reports were presented and there was much discussion of the past National Conference and the 2015 National Conference to be held in Louisville, June 25-July 2, Secretary Don Adams will report at our September meeting on the awards our members and chapter received. But, most note worthy were the awards that Al Coleman and Del White received for securing new members and marking compatriots graves. We are fortunate to have such dedicated compatriots in our chapter. Al, Don, and Glen Newman participated in the color guard and the ceremonies at the monument. Along with other chapters, and especially the Martin s Fort Society C.A.R. which includes children of our members, we participated in the wreath ceremony which was led by remarks, Why we are here The Battle of Blue Licks, by Lindsey C. Brock, President General NSSAR. Michael Tomme, NSSAR Treasurer General, gave a National Society SAR Tribute at the ceremony. It was an enjoyable day for all. I am looking forward to a good meeting in September at Georgetown College with the John Scott members who are joining our chapter. Judge Vanessa Dickson will be bringing our program on the Constitution. Thanks for the support and patience that all of you give to your president. High School with the SAR Jr. ROTC Medal President Kuster presented Lucien Rice with three State awards: the Lamplighters Award for contributing to the new Center for Advancing America s Heritage, the Bronze Robert Sherman Award for service to the State Society, and an Appreciation Certificate for his service as KYSSAR Chairman of Eagle Scouts. Steve Skinner, Lafayette Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution presents Rebekah Johnson of Madison Southern High School's AFJROTC with the Chapter's Outstanding Cadet Award. Rebekah was also presented a certificate and $50 check for finishing third in the Kentucky Society of the SAR Essay Contest.

Doug & Allison Collins Chuck Scott At the May meeting Compatriot Dr. Emery Wilson gave a fascinating History of Medical Practice in Kentucky. The state s first physician was Dr. Thomas McDowell, a graduate of William and Mary College in Virginia; he built the first log cabin in Knox County. In 1790 the Virginia General Assembly allotted Transylvania Company land in Kentucky District to develop higher education. In 1798 Kentucky accepted this gift and began building Transylvania in Lexington, the first medical school west of the Alleghenies, bringing farm students in to hear lectures, to write theses and to serve two-years apprenticeships. In 1809 Dr. Ephraim McDowell, educated in Edinburgh, Scotland, performed in twenty-five minutes the first surgery of an ovarian tumor. Dr. Emery Wilson The June meeting was at the Cane Ridge Meeting House, built in 1791, where a religious revival occurred in August Curator James Trader gave a detailed history of the structure and burial site. In 1804 a small group of Presbyterian ministers from Kentucky and Ohio, including foremost Rev. Barton W. Stone, penned a document, The Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery, at Cane Ridge that resulted in the birth of a movement of Christian believers seeking nonsectarian unity, calling themselves simply Christians. This movement gave birth to the present Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the Christian Church (Independent) and the Church of Christ. Ted Kuster presents Curator James Trader with a gift.

Woodford Ragland, Betsy Kuster and Anna Cason The Martin s Fort Society of Bourbon County, Kentucky Society of Children of the American Revolution hosted a memorial ceremony at the grave of Patriot Nathaniel Rogers. The ceremony opened with recitation of the US Pledge of Allegiance, followed by Anna Cason reading Wilbur D. Nesbit s poem, Your Flag and My Flag. Anna, a member of the Martin s Fort Chapter, Bourbon County, KYSCAR, gave a history of Flag Day. Anna Cason and Woodford Ragland, also a member of Martin s Fort Society, CAR, placed wreaths at the grave of Patriot Rogers. Woodford then gave a brief biography of Patriot Nathaniel Rogers, a native Virginian, serving in South Carolina under The Swamp Fox, Colonel Francis Marion. Woodford Ragland closed the ceremony with prayer thanking God for our nation of freedom and its patriots.
