2 Dear Church, Let us hope that the saying is true, that April showers do indeed bring May flowers. Allow me to use this letter to provide for us a sketch of what is going to happen in worship for the foreeeable future. I will be gone for the first week of May this year and we have a guest preacher, Gary Schiefer, on May 6 th. For the last two years we have been following the Narrative Lectionary series of passages that dictate for us readings for the nine-month year from September through May. When I return, there will only be two more weeks of Lectionary passages, so I have made the decision to forego these readings and do something different that I am excited about. On Mother s Day, May 13 th I am going to present The Gospel According to Harry Potter: The Power of Love. On Pentecost Day May 20 th, The Gospel According to Star Wars: May the Spirit Be With You and on Memorial Sunday May 27 th, The Gospel According to Marvel: Body of Teamwork. In June, we are going to celebrate our graduates on the 3 rd. Then we are going to do a three-week series featuring stage musicals to finish June. In July and August, we are going to be worshiping outside beginning with the Lord s Prayer in five sessions in July, followed by a series on Ruth in four sessions in August. When we return inside in September, we are going to be doing a series of scriptures that focus on Biblical stories beginning in Genesis and going in chronological format. These are not from the published Narrative Lectionary but instead from a UCC project in Wisconsin using art as a medium to tell Biblical stories. There are 36 of them and will take us through the nine-month year. I am always in search of ways to make our worship relevant, interesting and biblically- based that leaves room for the Spirit of God to do its work. The Elders and I are committed to sharing ideas and listening to your input. Please let us know about anything from a favorite hymn to the way communion is served. It s my hope and prayer that our time together every week continues to inform us and result in bearing fruit throughout the week. Finally, I would like to thank everyone for praying for me during my tests that I had done last month. The doctor has prescribed new medication that we hope will help with my symptoms. Thankfully, I have been able most of the time to accomplish what I have had to do in my work and family life. I am not used to be on the receiving end of your prayers, but it was felt and I am touched by your thoughts and concern. May God Bless Us this Spring Season, Pastor Darrin CONSISTORY MEETING APRIL 17, 2018 There will no longer be Bible Study at Magnolia Terrace. Instead there will be worship at Magnolia Terrace and Mill Creek once a month. On May 5, Simon Avila will be the special guest for the Diamond Dinner. Pastor Darrin will be gone the first week in May and will have a substitute on May 6. June 3 will be Graduation Sunday. Letters will go out to the graduates and their families inviting them to breakfast. There are 5 graduates. Thursday Bible Study will begin May 10 th at 1:30 PM. Communion will be Sunday, May 13, Outside worship usually begins in July.

DANIEL S COURAGE IN CAPTIVITY: A summer event called Babylon will be hosted here at First UCC. Students step back in time at Babylon, exploring Daniel s adventures as a captive in a foreign land. Kids participate in a memorable Bible-times Marketplace, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bible-times snacks, visit Daniel and collect Bible Memory Makers to remind them of God s Word. Plus, everyone learns to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes at Celebration a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved. If you would like to donate your time, your skills, your money or resources please contact the church office. Thank you to all that attended the SONrise pancake breakfast. 9 "As God has sent me, so I send you." From God to Jesus to the disciples to Christians in every generation, including ours, we are called to embrace, to encourage and to empower. This year, as part of the Strengthen the Church special offering, the Mission Committee challenges First Church members to once again embrace, encourage and empower locally and nationally! Your geraniums may be taken home following the 10:00 a.m. service on May 21st, or left to be planted around the church grounds by members of Genesis Friends, reminding us with their blooms all summer long of our commitment to new Christians and new UCC churches. The proceeds from this project will go to new churches across the U.S. and leadership development for old and new churches. As you make your $10.00 donation, we encourage you to remember an individual or group that has impacted your life as a Christian. 10 Men s Prayer Breakfast CAN YOU HELP US? At a recent meeting of the Mission Committee, we decided to join other churches in our community and offer a monthly outreach to our community. Our meals will be on the third Thursday each month from 5-6pm. We are hoping to establish four teams so no one group or individuals are responsible for the meal every month. We would love to include any member of our congregation that has an interest in participating. Even if you don t enjoy cooking, we will have something you can do to help and we need your help! If you are interested, please contact the office or Mary Ann Stone so you can be placed on our schedule. Our first meal is scheduled for June 21st. Won t you help? We are going to be having a Men s Prayer Breakfast at The Whistle Stop on Harding Way East on Saturday, May 19th at 8am. Food, Fellowship and Prayer. Casual and low stress!
