First, The Parish Picnic was headed by PGK Tim Tilson who did a fabulous job, as always, in planning, coordinating and overseeing the annual event. While I was not able to attend this year, I understand it was a great success. Thank you so much Tim! The next weekend, saw the second event, the annual Fairfax Fall Festival. Another PGK, Tim Hogan, did a great job leading this fundraiser for our Council. Tim, thanks so much for leading the effort again this year. And, lastly, my thanks to all of my Brothers and your families who volunteered their time in making these events the success they always are. Some of you worked some long hours to make sure nothing was left to chance. Great job! Entering November, we are approaching the real busy portion of the year. First we have the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas Basket Programs along with the arrival of the Christmas Trees. In addition, Christmas Tree Teams will also help with the selling of the Keep Christ in Christmas Cards & Magnets. Please volunteers some time with all of these events as we will definitely need the manpower. I am pleased to report that the Renovation of the Hall is moving along. I have appointed Tim Cooke as Chairman of the Committee. Tim, along with the other Committee members, are working on various renovation options. More updates will follow. Speaking of Chairman, it is with deep regret that Jac Cerny has stepped down as Chairman of the Councils KCIC program due to personal reasons. However, Bob Bilko has graciously volunteered to step in and lead the effort. Bob will be contacting the Tree Teams. Bob will work with Dave Todd, our District Deputy, who has led the program for the last few years. I know Bob and Dave will do a great job. I am pleased to announce also that our biggest fundraising effort, Christmas Tree Sales, will be co-chaired by PGKs Tim Cooke and Tim Tilson. I thank both of them for stepping up to lead this important effort. I extend my thanks to our ladies for their work over the last month, especially, with the Wine and Cheese Social held on Oct 16. Their annual event is always a pleasure to attend and I personally thank, Priscilla Hogan, Lynn Morrison, and Ann Todd for coordinating the efforts in providing a great time for all. Great job, Ladies! We will be hosting a new program this coming December A Spaghetti Dinner! This event will coincide with the Creche Lighting to be held on Dec 1st. Please see the enclosed flyer for more details. Come join our fellow Knights and their families in beginning the Advent Season. It is now my pleasure to announce the Knight and Family of the Month for August. The Knight of the Month is actually a group of men in the Council who we depend on daily to keep us going. They are the Gray GOSTS and I applaud each one of them for their contributions. Our Family of the Month is Herb and Linda Zimmerman. Herb and Linda are very active in the Council. Most recently, they opened their house to the Council (and others) for their annual Oktoberfest. Thanks for another wonderful time and thank you for your continued contributions to the Council. In closing, my wife, Kathy, and I extend our best wishes to everyone for a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving. One of the many things that I am wishful for this year is being Grand Knight of the best Council in the State of VA. I ask everyone to reflect on what they are most grateful for when you sit down for your Thanksgiving meal with family, relatives, and friends. Fraternally, Bill Weich Grand Knight November 2007
2 Page 2 Deputy Grand Knight s Report: I want to take a moment to thank Tim Tilson for spearheading a fantastic parish picnic. Also, to Tim Hogan for once again leading a successful Fall Festival. My thanks to everyone who helped to make these two events a success. Upcoming events in November the council will be doing Thanksgiving baskets for the needy so please try and help in any capacity. The weekend after Thanksgiving will also bring the arrival of Christmas trees. When your tree team captain calls please check Knight of the Month September you calendar and be willing to work a shift or two to help the council raise funds for our many charitable endeavors. December brings the councils annual Christmas party, visit with Santa at the Family Breakfast, and a time for family to celebrate Jesus birth. I would like to thank all the brother Knights who have already volunteered to help out at past events and to those brother Knights that will help make the events of the next couple of months a great success. Steve Kehoe Deputy Grand Knight The Lookout Searching for a New Chancellor It is with deep regret that I announce the resignation of our Worthy Chancellor, Greg Skorupski due to personal reasons. His resignation will be effective Dec. 31, 2007 to allow us time to transition a new Chancellor. Greg has done a great job and I appreciate his stepping up to fill the job. He will continue to serve the Council with the same enthusiasm and fraternity that he continually demonstrates. Nominations are now being accepted to fill the position of Chancellor for the remainder of the fraternal year. All 3rd Degree Brothers are eligible. Please contact me or DGK Steve Kehoe if you are interested in filling this important Council role or would like to n o m i n a t e a f e l l o w B r o t h e r. Fraternally Bill Weich Grand Knight Grey GOSTS Family of the Month September Herb & Linda Zimmerman Columbiettes Corner Thank you to Flo Hogan, Priscilla Hogan, Lynne Morrison, and Ann Todd for the great job they did setting up the Annual Wine and Cheese Social. Thank you for all of your hard work, ladies. The Columbiettes will be collecting food for the annual Thanksgiving and Christmas basket program the Knights support. If you are interested in donating any nonperishable food, please contact Lin da Baringh aus at LIN - DAMB3510@yahoo.com or Kathy Weich at kmweich@yahoo.com. Looking forward, the Columbiettes will be holding their annual Creche Lighting on Saturday December 1, 2007, after the 5:00 Mass. This year we are doing something a little different and working as a TEAM with the Knights to sponsor a spaghetti dinner after the Creche Lighting. Come join us for this beautiful service in front of the Church and then head over to the Parish Gym for a delicious home made spaghetti dinner. Please see the flyer in this newsletter for more details. All wives of Knights are Columbiettes and are more than welcome to join us at our monthly meetings or at any of our other events. Meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7:30 in Providence Hall. 3 Fraternal Year, Issue 4 Page 3 Nursing Home Bingo Council News & Events Christmas Tree Sales Each month Bill Ward, PGK, runs a bingo game for the seniors at the Fairfax Nursing Center. Brothers and their families are encouraged to meet on Monday November 12, 2007 at 6:45PM to run bingo for the residents. We should be finished by 8:15PM. Please contact Bill Ward at bward@6292.kofcva.org or call at (703) with any questions about details Keep Christ In Christmas The Council is once again selling religious Christmas Cards. Your help is needed to sell the cards at a profit to the Council and to remind everybody that the purpose of Christmas is the coming of Christ. The cards are reasonably priced and in the theme of the true Christmas. They are available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Tagalog, Ukranian, and Polish. Brochures are available to bring the information to coworkers, etc. Please consider spending time assisting at the sales table in front of the CCD Office on Sundays. Contact Bob Bilko for more information: One of the Council s largest income and community efforts in support of Council projects is rapidly approaching... our Christmas Tree sales project. Lot Set Up will be on Friday 23 Nov at 9:00 AM... the day after Thanksgiving. With tree delivery on Saturday 24 Nov at 7:00 AM. Team Captains, please inform your teams. This will be an all-hands effort. Noting the exceptional turn out in the past, we are confident this will be as painless an effort as moving 540 trees and setting up the lot can be. The team schedule is completed and the team make up has remained essentially the same with the addition of new Knights. A bulletin board with the schedules and team make up will be in available in the hall. The order for the trees has been sent and down payment made. As last year Saint Vincent De Paul will be offering Christmas Wafers for a donation. A variety of the Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas Cards and ornaments will also be available. Please try to help out with as many shifts as you can. Not sure which Christmas Tree Team you re on? Contact Tim Tilson or Tim Cooke to find out. Rosary at the Abortion Facility On the second Saturday of the month, Knights will meet at 8:00 A.M. to pray the rosary in front of the abortion clinic at Eaton Place (across the street from the Best Western at Route 123 and I-66). This month the date is Saturday, November 10 th. It doesn t take too long to pray the whole Rosary, and is a great way to start your day. Come join us, and bring the whole family. Volunteers Needed for the December 8th "Adopt-A-Spot" Clean-Up The Council is looking for two or three volunteers on Saturday, 8 December, to join me in removing trash and debris from a small run of Old Lee Highway east of St. Leo the Great. We begin our duty to the community at 10 a.m., and should be finished no later than 10:40. There will be coffee and doughnuts at the Hall prior to the event to bolster our stamina, and the same afterwards to refresh us. Please contact me, Kevin Darr, at (703) between 8 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Monday-Friday, and on (240) any other time.
4 Page 4 The Lookout Thanksgiving Baskets Our Council, in cooperation with the Saint Vincent DePaul Society of St. Leo s Parish, will be collecting food and/or cash to provide underprivileged families with a food basket for Thanksgiving. The council donates a turkey and a gift certificate for purchase of perishables to go with the baskets. It has been a tradition in our Council that Council members (or groups of members) adopt a family and purchase a basket with the suggested items on our adopt a-family shopping list. Please try to participate in this worthwhile program. If you can t provide a basket, cash donations would be helpful in purchasing items that are not available in the SVDP larder. We ask that your baskets be brought to Providence Hall between 3 PM and 8 PM but no later than 8 PM on Friday the 16th of November. The suggested food list -- which is designed to provide a week's supply of groceries for a family of 4, 2 adults and 2 children -- is posted on our website and is also available in Providence Hall. Depending on your spending habits, the average cost of providing all the items on the food list will cost approximately $65. Sign up sheets for donating baskets, assembling baskets and delivery are also on the website. Assembly is on Friday afternoon and evening November 16 th. Delivery to the recipients of the baskets will be on Saturday, November 17 starting at 10:00 AM. Please consider taking part. This is one of our most important charitable events and we need your help.
