1 Grand Knight s Message: As we head into the next couple of months, we have a great number of opportunities for charitable works and assisting those in need in our community. In particular, I urge every brother knight to consider sponsoring a family for our annual Thanksgiving Basket project. See this newsletter and our website for details and contact Brothers George Schuld, Greg Skorupski and/or Al Leightley if you can help in this worthy effort. We need Knights families to adopt a needy family, clients provided by St. Vincent de Paul Society (do it yourself or join resources with another brother knight). We also need basket assemblers and brothers to deliver baskets. Our Knight of the Month for September is Brother Tim Tilson. Tim has been a great help to me in my Grand Knight year and has been his usual constant presence at many events, coming to meetings, taking the lead on several projects and running the Parish Picnic and making sure that this huge undertaking went off extremely well. Tim involved many brother knights with his extra special skills at raising volunteers and a great time was had by everyone (Father Kelly and the parish community seemed very pleased with the day). Thanks very much to Tim for all his hard work on this. Our Family of the Month for September is Herb Zimmerman and Linda Baringhaus. Herb and Linda have been extremely involved in many activities this year they have worked very hard on Ovations shows and volunteered to fill in where needed in our Ushering efforts with the church (as well as hosting a great Oktoberfest!). Deputy Grand Knight Bill Weich and I are both very appreciative of the example that Herb and Linda set in their level of involvement and dedication to the Knights efforts. One recurring event that we have and which I would like to reflect on here for a bit is our Abortion Facility Rosary. This rosary is one of my particular favorites when it comes to activities that we do as a council. It is not a fundraiser or a work-intensive event rather, it is a very important spiritual activity that we perform. Each month, a group of knights form as few as 5 to as many as 20+ show up and we pray all four mysteries of the rosary. We start at 8:00 and are usually November 2006 Knights of Columbus Fr. Francis J. Diamond Council #6292 Web Page: Providence Hall (703) Old Lee Highway, Fairfax, Virginia, done in time for brothers to make the 9:00 Am Saturday Mass at St. Leo s if they are so inclined. This event is a great opportunity for us to reflect on our beliefs as Catholics and to take a stand in support of the Pope, the Church, and for Life itself. It is a wonderful time to spend in prayer and contemplation with brother knights and members of their families that often show up as well (we have had decades led by children at the age of 9!). There have been some great stories to come out of just the times that I have been there such as the time we had a man pull over, stand and watch us pray for a moment and then donate $20 to us (that same day another couple stopped and gave us another donation). This was certainly unusual as we do not solicit funds but I cannot help but think that we helped this man out in some very important spiritual way he seemed to have something on his conscience and I am certain that the powerful sight of a group united in prayer had an effect that day! Other days, of course, we have our share of those who support us with a smile or a thumbs up as well as those who give us a negative reaction PGK Dave Miller is never happy until we get at least one negative response he seems to think that we really reach someone that way and cause them to think. He may have a point. The main idea that I like to carry away from this exercise is that we must be positive in our attitude and pray FOR everyone involved even those who are considering the act of abortion, those who have one anyway and even the misguided doctors and nurses who assist in this terrible act. We must pray and hope that they all come to value life as we do and pray for God s loving forgiveness. Some of the most moving signs I have ever seen in the March for Life are those that simply say I regret my abortion. I strongly encourage all knights to come and pray the rosary for an end to this terrible scourge on our national conscience if you have never done this event please consider it I am sure you will find it very rewarding. As our State Deputy s motto says, Be Not Afraid to stand up for our Catholic beliefs! Fraternally Yours, Bill Ward All opinions expressed in are those of the individual author(s) and do not necessarily reflect those of Father Francis J. Diamond Council, the Grand Knight, the officers, the editor, or the Knights of Columbus.

2 Deputy Grand Knight s Message: From the Program Director Wow! Fr. Diamond Council has had a busy 4 months! I would like to thank our Grand Knight, the Program Directors, Activity Chairmen, and all of my Brother Knights for their assistance and energy in all of the events thus far. We have another 10 months of activities and I have no doubt we will all be there for each other. I especially thank all of the Knights and their families who participate in the Srcip Program. For those who do not know what the Program is about. Scrip is actually a gift card or gift certificate for Safeway, Giant, Shoppers Food Warehouse, and Food Lion. They can be purchased in denominations from $10 - $100 (depending on which store you use). When you use these gift cards or certificates to purchase you groceries, Fr. Diamond Council receives a percentage of the total amount used. The Scrip Program has been a little slow in participation over the last few years; however, the Program is picking up over the last few months. In addition, this year we have partnered with St. Leo s Parish School to help boost the program. More and more Knights and their families are regular purchasers of Scrip. Again, its an easy Program to administer and we can really reap the rewards. If you are interested in learning more feel free to contact Larry Novack at zlrn01@aol.com or More information can be found at or Council website, under Scrip Program. Oh, one last thing Buy Scrip. Head Usher Awards & Items of Note Knight of the Month September 2006 Family of the Month September 2006 Congratulations to Brother Knight Craig Radcliff on becoming the head usher at St. Leo's. There is always a need for ushers either on a regular or part time basis. A large majority of the ushers are brother Knights so why not join and add to this team dedicated to helping the Church. Craig can be reached at Fraternal Prayer Contact Brother Jack Cotner has volunteered to be the Council s Fraternal Prayer Contact. If you wish to request prayers from the council for a brother Knight or relative who is sick or in distress (or has passed away), please contact Jack at cotnerjohn@aol.com or (703) A special thanks to Jack for taking on this very important role in the council.

3 Life Line Screening in Providence Hall News & Events Entertainment Books Friday November 10, :30 AM - 5:30 PM Providence Hall Life Line Screening offers health screenings to assess the risk of stroke and vascular disease. These screenings include a Carotid Artery screening, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening and an Ankle Brachial Index (ABI). Also offered will be a Bone Density screening to assess risk for osteoporosis. These fast, painless and low-cost tests use ultrasound technology and are conducted by registered or registryeligible Ultrasound Technologists. A board certified physician reviews the results of each test to ensure the accuracy of the results before they are mailed to the individual. An individual whose screening suggests further evaluation is encouraged to seek appropriate follow-up care with his/her own physician. Participants in this screening are usually 40 years old or older and anyone interested in registering for any of these screenings, will call to schedule an appointment. Each screening requires ten minutes or less to complete and costs $45. A package of all three vascular screenings is $109, a savings of $26. Also available at the screening will be free information on the identification and control of risk factors for stroke, vascular disease, abdominal aortic aneurysms, and osteoporosis. Ten Commandments & Beatitudes Plaques Have you bought your Christmas gifts? Stop by the CCD entry after Sunday Masses and see what they look like. These plaques support the effort to bring the Commandments to public attention, as well as making great gifts at a reasonable price. The 2007 Entertainment Books are sold as a fundraiser for the council. You can to neighbors, at work, or to others just by showing the book to them. Can you spend a little time after Mass and help sell them by the CCD entrance? Contact David Todd for more information. datodd@verizon.net or Rosary at the Abortion Facility On the second Saturday of each month, Knights meet at 8:00 A.M. to pray the rosary in front of the abortion clinic at Eaton Place (building next to the Holiday Inn at Route 123 and I-66). This month the date is Saturday, October 14 th. It doesn t take too long to pray the whole Rosary, and is a great way to start your day. Come join us, and bring the whole family. Nursing Home Bingo Each month our Worthy Grand Knight Bill Ward runs a bingo game for the seniors at the Fairfax Nursing Center. Brothers and their families are encouraged to meet on Monday, October 9, 2006 at 6:45PM to run bingo for the residents. We should be finished by 8:15PM. Please contact Bill Ward at bward@6292.kofcva.org or call at (703) with any questions about details. This is a great family event for the holiday season. Virginia Marriage Protection Amendment There will be an amendment to the Virginia State Constitution on the election ballot in November that, if adopted, will outlaw same-sex marriage and civil unions in Virginia. The Knights of Columbus of Virginia have collected a number of educational materials from the National Council of Catholic Bishops, and other sources, that explain the Church s position on the issue of same-sex marriage, as well as the consequences associated with its legal recognition. These materials are posted on a link appearing at the bottom of the home page of the Knights web site ( under the heading Virginia Marriage Protection Amendment Materials. The Knights of Columbus of Virginia urge all parishioners to read these materials prior to the November election.

4 Thanksgiving Baskets Our Council, in cooperation with the Saint Vincent DePaul Society of St. Leo s Parish, will be collecting food and/or cash to provide underprivileged families with a food basket for Thanksgiving. The council donates a turkey and a gift certificate for purchase of perishables to go with the baskets. It has been a tradition in our Council that Council members or groupings of members adopt a family and purchase a basket with the suggested items on our adopt a-family shopping list. Please try to participate in this worthwhile program. If you can t provide basket cash donations would be helpful in purchasing items that are not available in the SVDP larder. We ask that your baskets be brought to Providence Hall on Saturday the 18 th of November. The suggested food list which is designed to provide a weeks supply of staples for a family of 4, 2 parents and 2 children, is on the next page of this newsletter, posted on our Website, and also available in Providence Hall. Depending on your spending habits the average cost of providing all the items on the food list should be about $75. Sign up sheets for donating baskets; assembling baskets and delivery are also on the Website. Assembly is on Saturday, November 18 th at 10:00 AM and delivery to the recipients of the baskets will be on Sunday, November 19 th starting at 10:00 AM. Please consider taking part. This is one of our most important charitable events and we need your help. If you have questions contact Greg Skorupski at gregskisr@aol.com or (703) or Al Leightley at leightley8@msn.com or (703) to volunteer your services. Christmas Tree Sales One of the Council s largest income and community efforts in support of Council projects is rapidly approaching... our Christmas Tree sales project. Lot Set Up will be on Friday 24 Nov at 10:00 AM... the day after Thanksgiving. With tree delivery on Saturday 25 Nov at 7:00 AM. Team Captains, please inform your teams. This will be an all-hands effort. Noting the exceptional turn out in the past, we are confident this will be as painless an effort as moving 540 trees and setting up the lot can be. The team schedule is completed and the team make up has remained essentially the same with the addition of new Knights. The team schedule is included in this newsletter. A bulletin board with the schedules and team make up will also be in available in the hall. The order for the trees has been sent and down News & Events payment made. As last year Saint Vincent De Paul will be offering Christmas Wafers for a donation. A variety of the Knights of Columbus Keep Christ in Christmas Cards and ornaments will also be available. Please try to help out with as many shifts as you can. Not sure which Christmas Tree Team you re on? Contact Dave Miller at to find out. Keep Christ In Christmas The Council is once again selling religious Christmas Cards. Your help is needed to sell the cards at a profit to the Council and to remind everybody that the purpose of Christmas is the coming of Christ. The cards are reasonably priced and in the theme of the true Christmas. They are available in English, Spanish, French, Italian, Tagalog, Ukranian, and Polish. Brochures are available to bring the information to coworkers, etc. Please consider spending time assisting at the sales table in front of the CCD Office on Sundays. In addition to the religious Christmas Cards we also have a great car magnet announcing Keep Christ in Christmas. The magnet comes from a KofC council in Illinois. We are selling them and profiting at the same time we make the statement. The sales table is in front of the CCD Office on Sundays, and magnets are only $3 each. Stop by and say hello, see what is available, or plan to help with the sales. Contact David Todd for more information. datodd@verizon.net or Example of KCIC Car Magnet
