1 MESSENGER SUNDAY SERVICE July 8, :30 AM Pastor Rev. Paul Bayerl Bible readings: Old Testament 2 Samuel 5: 1-5, 9-10 Gospel, Mark 6: 1-13 Message: "Taken for Granted" THE PASTOR S PAGE Rev. Paul Bayerl (with reference to Mark 6: 1-13) On the heels of last week's passage in which Jesus heals a woman who has suffered for a dozen years and raises to life the daughter of a very patient man, in this week's lesson Jesus and the disciples are in Nazareth, the city where Jesus grew up. In those days it was a town of probably less than 500 people the experts say. The town's name is thought to derive from the Hebrew word for branch ne ṣer, ר צ נ. The name alludes to the prophecy of Isaiah 11:1, A shoot shall come out from stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. In a town so small, it is possible to know everyone. Scripture shows that Jesus' mother Mary continued to live there. In this week's lectionary passage we will look at the ways in which Familiarity breeds contempt. I look forward to seeing you this Sunday!
2 From the book of Mark, Chapter 6: 1-6 He left that place and came to his hometown, and his disciples followed him. On the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were astounded. They said, Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us? And they took offense at him. Then Jesus said to them Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house. And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Christ in the Synagogue Nikolai Nikolaevich Ge, SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP At Fellowship hour last Sunday we celebrated the 4th of July with colorful patriotic decorations and Mary Wilburn s wonderful red, white and blue desserts. Mary a n d Holly Pratt prepared the food and served as hostesses on this special occasion that has become an Independence Day tradition at HSCPC. Nobody who stayed for fellowship hour went away hungry. What a marvelous feast. Thank you Mary and Holly FALL MISSION PROJECTS IN THE PLANNING STAGE Catherine Hilton and Holly Pratt, chairmen of the Outreach Ministry division of HSCPC,have outlined the traditional Mission projects for the coming fall season.
