2 NOTICE... Due to the increased costs of printing and stamps it costs us approximately $1.75 to snail mail each black and white copy of the monthly newsletter. Effective July 1, 2015 members receiving newsletters by postal mail instead of electronically will be charged $10 per year in addition to the membership renewal. This resolution was passed by the Board at a board meeting held on August 19, The surcharge is necessary to offset the cost of printing and mailing the newsletters. Members can avoid the surcharge by receiving the newsletters electronically via or viewing or downloading from the NJOS website ( Please contact Anita Gibaldi if you wish to switch to electronic delivery. Dr. Frank Ariosta has been able to breed one of his favorite plants, Cattleya Maxima Coerulea. He is offering plants for sale at the next meeting. If you are interested please call him at A Request... NJOS has a page on its website called In Memoria ( which is dedicated to preserving the history of our society. It has not been updated in a while. I would like to update this page to commemorate members who have passed away such as JoAnne Petrone, Don Carley, and Irene Schwarz. Please submit pictures, stories or biographies to Anita Gibaldi. Let s not let their hard work and dedication be forgotten. Please help preserve the history of our society. 8 So I had a really great day today (August 16, 2014) in the world of Orchids (for me anyway). I went to the AOS Northeast Judging center to have four of my orchids judged for the flowers. They passed on two of them (even though they had nice comments), but I received TWO awards today! These are my first flower awards, so I am very excited. The first was a seed cross by Fred Clarke which is RLC Waianae Leopard 'Chin Hua' x C Jungle Jewel 'Mojave'. It received an HCC award with 77 points. The best part is that Fred Clarke said I could give it it's official name. So I present to you for the first time, RLC Lynne Stender 'Life's Love' HCC/AOS. Yes, my beautiful wife has been immortalized in an orchid! The second purple flower is a phalaenopsis, but it has a special trait called pelorism where the upper petals are trying to mimic the lower lip. This is usually frowned on, but I love it. Well after much debate, it was decided to award it an AM of 81 points. This is a big deal for a peloric orchid and I am glad I was able to grow it well enough to bring it to judging. the cultivar belongs for Carri Raven-Riemann and I am glad I can bring an AM to the Orchidphile name. Bill Stender A Frog In Its Throat MHOS (Mid-Hudson Orchid Society) member Linda Francis took these photos in June, when she noticed her Laelia tenebrosa was closing. She looked closer and saw it was being pollinated by a tree frog! [A rare picture, I thought it was interesting] From the MHOS September 2014 Newsletter. Page 8 SEPTEMBER 2014
