2 President s Report 2017 AGM Bunbury Orchid Society The Bunbury Society had a very successful 2016 in my opinion, with regular attendances at our Monthly Meetings and I sincerely thank each and every Member for their assistance in the operations of the Society. All organisations depend on the Membership for their time and devotion to the tasks of making it work, and I must thank especially my Vice President, Graeme Winter for his support, our hard working Secretary Lyn Harwood, Treasurer Andrea Shine along with all the Members of the Executive Committee who worked cohesively during the past 12 months to enable the Society to function in a manner that is a credit to them. During the past 12 months, the Society hosted and participated in the 2016 Intersociety Challenge and Workshop held in Busselton on the first weekend in August, and entered a lovely Display of our orchids, and once again my thanks to those Members who assisted in any manner of putting the Display together and supplying plants. The Society also conducted 3 wonderful Shows in various venues, being the Autumn Show, Winter Show and the Spring Show held at the Italian Club was very well received and proved once again to be the correct venue. To all Members who assisted with the organisation in any way of the Shows, being assisting in the organisation, running as a volunteer or entering plants in all the various Classes, provided a wonderful spectacle in the Halls for Members and members of the Public. Congratulations to those Members who won any Class or had plants on the Champion s Tables. I would sincerely like to thank the Judging Panel for their devotion and time to organise the Judging of all the Shows and at the Monthly Meetings as well. Looking forward to 2017, I trust that we will be able to fill all the available positons on the Committee, and once again may I thank each and every member, and wish you all good health, wealth and good growing for the year. Rick Winch President.
3 Editors Edition We are the newly elected Editors of Orchid Talk for this coming year and look forward to presenting photographs of orchids flowering at different times of the year. Our main interest is in Australian Native orchids and we are looking forward to seeing some of the beautiful exotic orchids that are grown by members. Hopefully we will have photos of benched orchids from meetings and with a bit of gentle persuasion, may be able to coax the growers to provide some brief growing notes on their orchids. Promenaea xanthina. grown by Phil Bunney Extract from :THE GENUS Promenaea by Ronald Schliefert Promenaeas have compact plants with prominent pseudobulbs that often vary in shape, depending on the particular species. All produce an attractive display of flowers that are proportionately large for the size of the plant. P. rollisonii has round, clustered pseudo-bulbs about 25 mm tall, while P. xanthina has four-sided pseudobulbs about 30 mm tall. All species have four grey-green leaves (each about 50 mm long), two emerging from either side of the base of the pseudobulb and two from the apex. P. xanthina, sometimes also known as P. citrina because of its golden-yellow flowers, is also found in southern Brazil but at an altitude of 1700 m. It also bears one or two flowers per inflorescence, the scented flowers measuring about 40 mm across and being perfumed, heavily textured and long lasting.
