ANNUAL REPORT OF THE RIGHT EMINENT GRAND COMMANDER Grand Commander s Address TO: The Officers and Members of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of the State of Kentucky Welcome Sir Knights to the One Hundred and Sixty-Third Annual Conclave of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Kentucky. To our distinguished guests from within our Commonwealth and to those who have traveled from our sister jurisdictions, we want you to know that your attendance is greatly appreciated, and it is my sincere hope that you will all enjoy the sessions of this Grand Commandery, and that the things done here will inspire you to return home with renewed enthusiasm to work harder for Chivalric Masonry. Sir Knights, there are certain parts of an address of this kind that must appear in print in our proceedings, but the inclusion of all of my activities during this Past Templar Year to you at this Grand Conclave would require so much time and would be so boring that it would be almost impossible to keep you awake, so with your permission, I will read only those parts that are most relevant to our committees, skip the reports on visitations which will be printed in the proceedings where all who are interested in them may read them at a later date, and proceed to speak with you about the things that are most important to us in our beloved Order. State of the Order In traveling around our beautiful Commonwealth this past year, I have had the distinct honor of working with some of the most dedicated Freemasons our Fraternity has ever known. I have witnessed, and had the pleasure of working in some of the finest ritualistic ceremonies our Order has to offer. Time and time again, without the hope of fee or reward, countless numbers of our brave, selfless, committed Knights have given up their evenings, weekends, holidays, birthdays, anniversary s and private travels to continue serving where service is needed. I shudder to think what condition we would be in without the service of so many of you who deny yourselves retirement from Masonry, and seek only to prove that our best days are still ahead of us, and not behind. 17

Sir Knights, contrary to what some people have said to me throughout my tenure as your Grand Commander this year, I am not looking through a set of Rose Colored Glasses when it comes to the State of our Order. I am fully aware that we have some problem areas that must be addressed. We are not all uniformed, as we should be, in our Commanderies. Not all of our Commanderies are able to confer their own work. We have difficulty in finding suitable leadership in some of our Commandery Officers, and we are not all as gifted as some in memorizing the conferral of our Templar Orders. Oh, and lets not forget about our finances. My fellow Fraters, in order for these things to be corrected we must be able, with fraternal enthusiasm, to lay the groundwork necessary for the future growth and prosperity of our Templar Order. Remember, no Grand Officer in any jurisdiction cannot, as a person, or as a group, bring in new petitions and increase our membership in volume. Therefore, we must begin at the very grassroots of our Order: each Chapter, Council and Commandery. This is where our real strength is. So, let s try a few of these ideas on for size: 1) Tell our Story If possible, meet with each individual body. This is the place to generate enthusiasm by talking to each person present, if possible. Tell them some of our York Rite story, that it consists of four separate, although distinct, bodies. Therefore, all Master Masons have received approximately one-fourth of the York rite and that all Master Masons who profess the Christian religion should be a Knight Templar. 2) Symbolism Development We Templars know these things, but you would be surprised to learn how many do not know the connection between the Symbolic or Blue Degrees and those of our York Rite. Tell them all of this, and other related information you think will be inspiring to them. 3) Social Aspects Many subordinate York Rite bodies have social affairs once, twice and, in some places, more than twice each year, including the ladies. Invite friends to your various suppers and entertainment. Having the ladies present on various occasions has created interest in our York Rite activities. 4) Influence of Wives I think that we can all agree that when the candles are lit, and the home fires are burning well, it eases the time spent away from home in service to Masonry. But, equally, I believe 18

that if we continue to invite our ladies, and in some ways, target them specifically, by making them feel welcome, insuring their support, and allowing them a chance to fully appreciate what their husbands, fathers and friends do, it will help our members become very, very good workers and promoters in the York Rite. 5) Consider Member Habits We can well understand that, when a man leaves his work at five or six o clock and goes home to freshen up and eat, he gets comfortable, and it is hard to move him out of his easy chair away from the TV. or computer. But, if he knows he can go from work to a York Rite meeting and get a substantial meal, good fellowship, associate with men who will not waste his time, and allow him to be home at a decent hour to unwind and prepare for the following days labor, more likely, than not, will he attend and be faithful. Generally, when a member attends the meetings regularly, he is much more interested in our fraternity. He will spread enthusiasm and interest to others who are not attending. If we don t get them to our Conclaves, we don t have a chance to interest them. 6) Improvement of Work The conferral of our Orders is most important. When we receive a petition and accept the required fee, the very least we owe the candidate is the very best dramatization we can offer. Sir Knights, we confer our Orders only two or three times a year, at most, in our constituent Commanderies. Believe me, I would love to see every Commandery be able to confer its own work, but, I know, this is impractical. If you are unable to confer your own work, consider establishing an area team, or seeking out those organizations that can assist you until you are able to stand on your own. We have several Past Masters Societies and York Rite Colleges within our Commonwealth that can, and will, assist you, if asked. 7) Ritualists Sir Knights, some of our ritualists have continued in their respective duties for years, and I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge their undying loyalty and devotion to Templary, but we must face facts, not all of us can be a Jim Wall, a Willard Hart or a Bill Riggs, when it comes to conferring our work. However, there is hope. If we scrutinize our newer members, who show proper interest in our ceremonies, and work on alleviating that terrible crutch, which we all so desperately rely 19

upon, the open book, we will be able to insure our own success by continuing to build upon what our forefathers envisioned, A Fraternity Like No Other, Built In The Hearts Of Men. Tomorrow in the immediate sense is only a day away. However, in a more poetic sense, it can be construed as being any part or segment of the near or distant future, depending on our own perspectives, goals and ideals. If Freemasonry is to be preserved as a way of life, we, as Christian Masons, must dedicate ourselves individually and collectively in displaying the courage of our convictions, by embarking on a Crusade to help, aid and assist in promoting the growth and progress of the Blue Lodge and all concordant bodies, at the local level, nationally and, indeed, worldwide, observing the Ancient Landmarks and regulations of our Grand Lodge and working together in the warm atmosphere of sincerity and enthusiasm displayed by those who paved the way for our Knighting. Sir Knights, I do hope that some of these ideas will help, and I pray that we will all continue to work together, side by side, to increase the range, scope and influence of this wonderful Christian Order. It has been a year that I will never forget, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to serve you. So, with all this said, and with the year now behind me, I am prepared to render an accounting of my actions, decisions and recommendations as your Grand Commander. Visitations This past year has been a truly wonderful experience, and on of the most enjoyable times of my life. The best part of being Grand Commander is that you have the opportunity to travel and meet some of the finest Knights ever assembled. The constant display of love, dedication and affection afforded me this past year was truly overwhelming. Every visit is one that I will cherish and will remain with me forever. My visitations to other Grand Jurisdictions were wonderful learning experiences for me, and I believe that there is much to be gained when traveling outside of our own Commonwealth. The hospitality extended to my lovely wife and I was exceeded only by the warm reception and friendship extended to us throughout our travels. We will cherish these memories, and all those who participated in making them always. 20

I also attended the East Central Department Meeting of the Grand Encampment held in Perrysburg, Ohio. This meeting was chaired by our very capable, Department Commander, Sir Knight Frank Bonner, Past Grand Commander of Ohio. This meeting was extremely informative, well thought out, and, I believe, worthwhile. I encourage every Knight Templar in Kentucky, who wishes to attend one of these meetings, to make the effort, pay the fees, and give up the time. There is much to be learned, and much to teach, when it comes bettering our Fraternity in an open forum that allows for easy exchange of ideas and plans that may benefit us all. Remember, plagiarism in Masonry is a good thing when it benefits us all. Finally, in August, all of the elected officers of this Grand Commandery, as well as several Past Grand Commanders, attended Grand Encampment in Roanoke, Virginia. Not only was there fun and excitement enjoyed by all, but we had the pleasure of witnessing history in the making. Grand Commanderies were instituted, by Grand Encampment, in both the countries of Romania and Togo. This was Christian Masonry on the move. Just think, we have all taken a vow to defend the Christian religion, wherever we go, and what better way to serve our savior than by spreading His Gospel around the world Itinerary 2008 September 19 Grand Commandery of Kentucky, Knights Templar (Lexington) 20 Grand Chapter of Kentucky, Royal Arch Masons (Lexington) 23 Eureka Chapter No. 101/Hiram Council No. 70 (Louisville) 24 Jefferson Commandery No. 52, KT (Louisville) 25 Marion Commandery No. 24, KT (Lebanon) 30 North Central York Rite College No. 116 (Louisville) October 1 Kentucky Chapter No. 134, National Sojourners (Louisville) 2 Shelby Commandery No. 32, KT (Shelbyville) 3 Fort Knox Chapter No. 439, OES (Radcliff) 4 Area 4 & 5 th Arch Meeting (Elizabethtown) York Rite Council Meeting (Elizabethtown) 6 Cherokee Chapter, Order of DeMolay (Louisville) 7 Louisville-DeMolay Commandery No. 12, KT, Practice (Louisville) 8 Iroquois Chapter No. 193/Sword and Trowel Council No. 111 (Louisville) 9-10 Grand Commandery of Ohio, KT 11 Bluegrass York Rite College No. 104 (Glasgow) 21

I strongly believe that these Memberships, as prestigious as they are, honor the office I temporarily hold, and Templary more than they do me personally. I was honored with the following Honorary Memberships: The Grand Commandery of Tennessee The Grand Commandery of Ohio The Grand Commandery of Indiana Webb Commandery No. 1 Washington Council No. 1 Lexington Chapter No. 1 Dispensations Granted By the authority of the Constitution and Statutes of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of the State of Kentucky, the following Dispensations were granted: 27

Montana Robert E. Cecil, #24...Utah James T. Many of our Commanderies are conferring their own work and not waiting for Festivals, and I congratulate those involved for their hard work and dedication. Sir Knights, I still believe that the fun and fellowship that we all enjoy is enough to keep having Festivals around our state, and if we continue working together, I believe that we can accomplish a great deal for York Rite Masonry. However, if our main focus is to replenish our Commanderies with new and impressionable members, members who want to take an active part, we must put our best foot forward and plan to have the best work, the best location, and yes, the best fellowship our Christian Order can offer. If we give them our best, and make a positive impression, I believe that they will return. Easter Pilgrimage to Washington DC This year I had the pleasure, with a number of other Knights and Ladies from around the Commonwealth, to attend the Easter morning sunrise service at the George Washington National Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, VA. This is a very special and moving service, and an experience you will not soon forget. Our Grand Encampment Officers and Committeemen are to be congratulated for their hard work and dedication in making this annual event possible. I encourage each Sir Knight in our Commonwealth to consider 29

making this pilgrimage to our Nations Capital. And I would be quite remiss, if not entirely absent minded, if I did not single out the tireless efforts put forth by our own Sir Knight G. Michael Miller, Sr., KCT, PGC. His selfless service, and his willingness to take the reins of this pilgrimage for so many years, on behalf of the Knights of this Grand Commandery, speaks volumes as to his character in action and his love for this Fraternity. Mere words cannot express our gratitude. Thank You Mike! Knight Templar Magazine Supplement My sincere thanks to Sir Knight JB Hitt, II for his stellar service as editor of the Knights Templar Magazine, Kentucky Supplement. I especially applaud his never ending patience in getting my message to him in a timely manner, as well as his sincere desire to make the supplement a tremendous benefit to the Knights Templar in Kentucky. We are indeed blessed with having someone so committed to this work. Thank You JB! Knights Templar Eye Foundation We have been very fortunate that both Sir Knights Raymond Swanson and Sir Knight William Lile, both members of Louisville-DeMolay Commandery No. 12, agreed to serve as Chairmen of this most important Foundation. This past year we spent $333, on 168 cases within our Commonwealth. But, our contributions totaled only $19, I don t think we can argue about getting our fair share of assistance in this area. It is interesting to note that Sir Knight Ray Swanson, The State-Wide Chairman for the KTEF, traveled over 4,000 miles and interviewed 56 candidates on his own, and we still have some 85 cases still pending. Sir Knight Ray, my chapeau is off to you sir for a job well done. Thank You! Holy Land Pilgrimage The Holy Land Pilgrimage is a program designed to send Christian ministers to the Holy Land, and allow them to see and walk were our Savior did, and hopefully, give them a greater appreciation for their high calling. Unfortunately, this year, no ministers were either identified or nominated for this worthwhile endeavor. It is hoped, with more emphasis, and better advertisement, we can identify someone for this wonderful honor next year. 30

Youth It is the privilege of the Grand Commander to represent this Grand Commandery at the annual meetings of our Masonic sponsored youth organizations. On the 18 th, 19 th and 20 th of June, I attended the Grand Assembly of The Order of Rainbow for Girls held in Louisville, Kentucky at the Scottish Rite Temple. On the 11 th of July I attended the Annual Election and Installation of Officers for the Order of the Builders in Scottsville, Kentucky. On the 17 th of July I attended the Grand Conclave of the Order of DeMolay in Williamsburg, Kentucky. I privileged to present the outgoing State Master Councilor with his Past State Master Councilor s Jewel on behalf of the Grand Commandery of Kentucky. And on numerous occasions, and because Kentucky does not have a Supreme Bethel, I attended Bethel No. 18, Jobs Daughters, and brought greetings from our Grand Commandery. Sir Knights, the future growth and prosperity of our youth organizations is an issue of continuing concern for all of Masonry. Only through our combined efforts will these wonderful organizations continue to exist and grow. The accomplishments of these youth groups are important, not only to Masonry, but to our Nation, and they deserve our support, time, effort and even our admiration for what they do. Knight Templar Cross of Honor This year I received several nominations for the Knights Templar Cross of Honor which will be presented during our Grand Sessions held in Lexington, Kentucky. It is most inspiring to read the nomination forms of these Sir Knights who have done so much to enhance Templary in our Commonwealth. It is sad that we are unable to recognize all of these Knights for their achievements. However, I believe that both you and I will be pleased with the selection made this year when it is announced. Conrad H. Cates Service Award This award, and all that it demands of its recipient, will be announced later today as part of the Committee s report. The Sir Knight selected is one well known for his faithful efforts and leadership over many, many years of service to this beloved Order. Sir Knights, there is little else that we, as 31

a Grand Commandery, can offer to those who have so diligently labored among us. This honor is singular to Kentucky, and Kentucky only. Therefore, when this year s recipient is announced I doubt that anyone will be surprised. York Rite Council It has been an honor and a privilege to have served on the York Rite Council for the last four years. The Officers of the York Rite have discussed many items of interest, and there is always a general feeling that we are all in this together. There is just no way for our Masonic Bodies to grow and prosper without complete unity at all levels of our Fraternity. This Council s main objective is to promote York Rite Unity, and I believe that we have again achieved that goal again this year. Another important function of the Council is to oversee, plan and coordinate our Grand Sessions each year. With input from each of grand Bodies, we pray that the members attending the Grand Commandery Convocation will be happy with the results. To our Grand High Priest, Sir Knight Jeff Ritchie, and to our Illustrious Grand Master, Sir Knight Burton Allen, I wish to thank you both for the kindness and cooperation shown to me while in office. My tenure, as Grand Commander, would have been far more difficult if it had not been for the helpful and wise counsel you have extended to me at home and abroad. Thank You! Recommendations I recommend the following actions for consideration and approval of this Grand Commandery: A. That a permanent committee, consisting of the elected Officers of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Kentucky, excluding the Grand Commander, be charged with revising or updating the Constitution and Regulations of this Grand Commandery every five years. B. That every Division Commander who serves for at least three consecutive years be awarded the title of Past Division Commander, and that a suitable set of shoulder straps be awarded to him for his service. C. That only those Knights who have a uniform be awarded a membership cordon for wear on their uniform. All others will be presented with a suitable 32

certificate or lapel pin designed by the Grand Commandery of Kentucky. Conclusion and Appreciation When I wrote the word APPRECIATION, like so many have who have gone this way before me, my thoughts ran through the many things that I had to be grateful for to you all. I realized that I could not put all my thoughts in a whole volume, let alone in a speech. So, in the limited time that I have I can just say thanks, and I mean thanks from all my heart. Thanks to the members of all the Commanderies that I have the privilege of belonging to. Thanks to all of the Past Grand Commanders who have been of so much help and such an inspiration to me. Thanks to all the elected and appointed Grand Commandery Officers that have done everything asked, and whose friendship has meant so much. Thanks to Sir Knight William G. Hinton, PGC, for having everything so well organized that it made this Grand Commanders job much easier. And finally, to my lovely wife Stacy, and to our four wonderful children I can only say that I love each of you with all my heart, and that no matter how many times I left home, only to return late from one meeting or another, our home was always intact, in spite of my best efforts. Sir Knights, this year is over, and I thank you for your hospitality and your friendship, and I thank you even more for enduring the reading of this report. Courteously, Raleigh C. Foster Grand Commander The Report of the Grand Commander was accepted for publication in the Proceedings. 36 G. Michael Miller, Sr. The Grand Treasurer s Report and the Permanent Fund Report were accepted for inclusion in the Proceedings. REPORT OF THE GRAND RECORDER TO THE RIGHT EMINENT GRAND COMMANDER, OFFICERS, AND MEMBERS OF THE GRAND COMMANDERY OF KNIGHTS TEMPLAR OF KENTUCKY: This is my third report to you as your Grand Recorder. I thank Rebecca Warth, our Office Secretary, and the Constituent Recorders for their work on behalf of the Grand Commandery! Necrology Sir Knight Donald M. Estes, Recorder of Frankfort Commandery No. 4, died on July 28, We extend our sympathy to his family and friends. Also, Sir Knight Ralph H. Williams, Jr. died on August 25, He served Alfred P. Lindsey Chapter No. 69 following the death of Sir Knight D. Kent Berkley. We extend our sympathy to his family and friends. Former Recorders A number of Recorders stepped aside this year to allow others to serve. Among the long timers were Sir Knight Clarence E. Walton of Cynthiana Commandery No. 16 and Sir Knight Clyde Hill of Williamsburg Commandery No. 50. Sir Knight Anthony Holbrook stepped down as Recorder of Jackson Commandery No. 47. He had done a commendable job of helping to bring their records up-to-date. Sir Knight Gregory A. Raque stepped down as Recorder of Jefferson Commandery No. 52. I extend my personal thanks to each of them for their service to the Grand Commandery. The Office 36

As we look to the future, we must consider our needs and our financial resources. At present, our Office Secretary Rebecca Warth works from her apartment in Nicholasville on assigned tasks while I work in Shelbyville on my tasks. We try to meet in Shelbyville once a week to do some joint projects. While this system works, it has its challenges. Membership Although membership records continue to improve, we still have a way to go! Many of our Recorders have continued to work very hard to get their records up to date. The summary of the statistical table is as follows (NOTE: One Commandery has not submitted its data.): Members Knighted Admitted Reinstated Dead Suspended Demitted Expelled Adjust Members This makes for a net loss of 160 members. Several Commanderies did show a gain in membership, and we congratulate them. They were: +7 - Franklin Commandery No. 44, Franklin +5 - Morehead Commandery No. 53, Morehead +4 - Bowling Green Commandery No. 23, Bowling Green One Commandery had a statistical gain due to adjustments: +8 - Jackson Commandery No. 47, Jackson Franklin Commandery No. 44 had the greatest percentage of increase in membership as well as the greatest number increase in membership. Finances A basic summary of our finances is as follows: $106, Income for fiscal year July 1, 2008-June 30, 2009 $122, Expenses for fiscal year July 1, 2008-June 30,

<$ 15,715.65> - Excess of Expenses over Income (loss) The loss for the year was the result of having to pay the Grand Encampment assessment by July 1. This resulted in us paying TWO assessments during ONE fiscal year! As you know, our fiscal year ends on June 30, and we do not begin to collect our assessments until late July! As a result of legislation at the Triennial Conclave, the Grand Encampment assessment will be due by December 31 beginning with this year. In spite of all of this, we are making progress on my goal of paying the current year s expenses from the current year s income! Also, I continue to express my belief that we should have a continuing resolution to authorize expenditures in July and August prior to adopting a budget in September for the fiscal year of July 1-June 30. Concerns As of December 31, 2009, the Grand Encampment will require our Constituent Commandery Recorders to report their membership figures DIRECTLY to the Grand Encampment by the use of computer. For some of our Recorders, this will be a tremendous challenge. However, a large number of them have the expertise and ability to do this job especially after they will have been trained on the use of the York Rite Information System (YRIS). We have two items that need to be addressed. Section 22 of our Regulations relates to the Jewel presented to a Past Grand Commander. We should either repeal this Section or provide for its enforcement! The second is Standing Resolution Number 3 which calls for this Grand Commandery to present a Past State Master Councilor s Jewel to the outgoing State Master Councilor. To avoid a potential problem, it might be best to present Kentucky DeMolay with One Hundred Dollars as we do the other three Youth Groups. The problem of producing an annual Proceedings is making great improvement thanks to our Office Secretary Rebecca Warth! She will be working on the Proceedings for As promised, I produced and distributed a Proceedings for 2007 and 2008 which will hold us until we are caught up. It is my intention to do this again this year. 38

We have too many things that get sent to the Office when it would be better if they were sent to the person responsible. I will continue to work to see if more things can be handled in another way. For example, Nominations for the various Awards should have the same deadline date and be sent to the appropriate Committee Chairman. Second, By-Laws could be sent to the appropriate Chairman and the Committee might meet quarterly to review and approve them. At that point, the approved item(s) would be sent to the Office for filing and return to the local Council. Finally I continue to be impressed by the expertise and dedication of so many Commandery Recorders. Many are computer literate and do an outstanding job at the local level. Several have contributed both time and advice to help the office become more computer friendly with our reports. To each of you who serve so faithfully, I say a sincere THANK YOU! Courteously, William G. Hinton, PGC Grand Recorder DISTRIBUTION OF GRAND RECORDER S REPORT It was moved by the Grand Recorder that his report be received and distributed to appropriate committees. The motion was adopted. GREETINGS Sir Knight Donald H. Smith, Most Eminent Past Grand Master of the Grand Encampment, brought greetings to those in attendance REPORT OF GRAND INSPECTOR GENERAL To: Right Eminent Grand Commander; Officers and Sir Knights of the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Kentucky, convened for the 163 rd Annual Conclave: 39

This past year we saw 6 Commanderies have a score of 0. This was due to the fact they did not have enough people to Open. I do not know the answer to stop this. I will call on the members of ALL Commanderies to see if there is any way to help. I want to commend the Commanderies for doing a GREAT JOB. This was the closest year for scores we have had in a few years. The top 10 all scored above 200. They were: (1) RYAN NO. 17 (6) WHITESBURG NO. 51 (2) LOUISVILLE DEMOLAY NO.12 (7) JACKSON NO. 47 (3) MOREHEAD NO. 53 (8) PAINTSVILLE NO. 48 (4) NEWPORT NO. 13 (9) GLASGOW NO. 36 (5) COVINGTON No. 7 (10) BOWLING GREEN NO. 23 To the Division Commanders: I THANK YOU for the job you did this year. Courteously submitted, Gary Thornberry PGC/KCT Certificates and Jewels were presented to those Sir Knights who attended the Templar Academies. GREETINGS Sir Knight Robert Cronk, Right Eminent Department of the East Central Department of the Grand Encampment, brought greetings to those in attendance. He noted that the Department Conference would be help on March 12-13, 2010 in Louisville, Kentucky. REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON EYE FOUNDATION Medical Director, Knights Templar Eye Foundation Report 40

To: The Right Eminent Grand Commander, Officers, and Sir Knights of the Grand Commandery of Kentucky Subj: End of Fiscal Year 2009 Knights Templar Eye Foundation Report Total authorized funding for surgical procedures from KTEF was $382,211 which represents 192 completed cases plus 18 cases which were cancelled for various reasons. In addition there are another 81 cases which are in process. On April 9, 2009 a total of 34 Sir Knights and their ladies, in company with the Right Eminent Grand Commander and his wife made the annual pilgrimage to Alexandria, Va. For the 44

2009 Easter Sunrise Service at the George Washington National Masonic Memorial. The bus left Louisville at 10:30 PM and after a stop in Lexington, proceeded to the hotel in Alexandria. On arrival we toured the George Washington National Masonic Memorial. The rest of the afternoon was spent by some using the metro to visit sights in Washington. Everyone had dinner on their own Friday evening. Saturday morning the bus departed the hotel at 8:15 AM for a tour of the Eastern Star National Headquarters. We had a very delightful tour of the mansion which serves as the headquarters building. All were very impressed with the tour. A little rain caused a change in our plans and we had lunch in the food court of Union Station. Following lunch we toured several of the memorials in D.C. Saturday evening we had our Dutch Treat state dinner at the Fish Market which is in an historic building in Old Town Alexandria. Sunday morning the Kentucky Sir Knights and ladies attended the Grand Encampment Easter Sunrise Service. After the service we returned to the hotel to change clothes, load the bus and head back to Kentucky. After a breakfast stop in Manassas, Va. and a few rest stops on the way, we returned home. Again, I must offer my sincere thanks, on behalf of this Grand Commandery, to Nana Lampton and the American Life and Accident Insurance Company for their continued support of this pilgrimage by the purchase of advertising. This trip would not be possible without their support. Right Eminent Grand Commander, the members of this committee thank you for allowing us to serve this Grand Commandery. It has been my pleasure to serve as chair of this committee for many years, but the time has come to let someone else take over this job. I have enjoyed every trip we have made and thank all of you for the many fond memories that I have stored up. I will make the trip again in the future and offer my help to my successor if needed. Respectfully submitted, Committee for Long Range Planning Chairman PCG James King Jr. Member Right Eminent Grand Commander Raleigh C. Foster Member Very Eminent Deputy Grand Commander Arius Holbrook Member Eminent Grand Generalissimo Archie Smallwood Member Eminent Grand Captain General George Brooks REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON NECROLOGY GRAND COMMANDERY OF KENTUCKY September 17, 2009 To the Right Eminent Grand Commander, Officers, Sir Knights, and guests of this Grand Commandery We gather here annually to conduct the business and to celebrate the great fellowship and principles of the York Rite Grand Bodies in Kentucky. We meet most particularly at this time to conduct the affairs of the Grand Commander of Knights Templar. It has long been our hollowed custom to pause during these Conclaves and remember with deep sorrow and regret the passing of those of our number who have departed this life since we last gathered here. We anticipate with genuine pleasure the meeting and greeting of those many Sir Knights whom we have not seen for some time, and we regret that some have been prevented from attending by illness or other circumstances. However, the greatest and saddest sense of loss comes when we realize that we have lost 91 Sir Knights to the cold and unforgiving hand of death since we last assembled in this Grand Commandery. Grief is inevitable when we 49

comprehend that we will no longer enjoy the firm handshakes, the welcoming smiles, and the fraternal affection of those whose companionship we have lost, and whose labors in this great fraternity have ended. But while we pause to make this acknowledgement of the loss of these Sir Knights, we also must remember their families, friends and loved ones at this time of grief. We extend our deep and sincere sympathy to them. However, Sir Knights, I urge you to remember that these whom our Heavenly Father has chosen to take from our midst are not wholly gone from us or this world. They live on in the memories of those of us who survive. Their influence lives on in the noble thoughts they have inspired and their dedicated deeds which challenge us to be imitated. As we travel the path of life we are guided along by those who have gone before, and we must remember that we also contribute to those who shall follow. As Christian Knights we have an even greater assurance and comfort. We read in the New Testament of the wonderful words of our Blessed Savior as he assured his apostles, and us, of our great future with him and of eternal life. As we find in the 17 th Chapter of the Gospel of St. John, Jesus said, I am the resurrection and the life, saith the Lord, he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosoever lived and believeth in me, shall never die. Also, in the 14 th Chapter of the Gospel of St. John, we find these words, Let not your heart be troubled: Ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my house are many mansions: if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, and I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am ye may be also. This is the great assurance and comfort that we as Christians and Christian Knights have as a consolation when we must face the unknown in the stillness of death. It is a wonderful gift from which we can draw inspiration and faith. It is difficult to speak of the passing of these whom we treasured so highly and often we must turn to the talents of the poets to help us find comfort and understanding. Listen now to these words addressing the sense of loss we feel as we remember these Sir Knights who have departed from this life during the past year. It sings low in every heart, We hear it, each and all- 50

A song of those who answer not, However we may call: They throng the silence of the breasts, We see them as of yore- The kind, the brave, the true, the sweet, Who walk with us no more. Tis hard to take the burden up, When these have laid it down; They brightened all the joy of life, They softened every frown; But, O tis good to think of them When we are troubled sore! Thanks be to God that such have been, Though they are here no more. More homelike seems the vast unknown Since they have entered there; To follow them were not so hard, Wherever they may fare; They cannot be where God is not, On any sea or shore; Whate er betides, Thy love abides, Our God, for evermore This Grand Commandery has been most fortunate in that no Grand officer has been lost to the grim hand of death during this past year. We give our Heavenly Father most grateful thanks for this blessing, and we pray that we may have their fellowship, leadership and counsel in this Grand Commandery for many years to come. However, we must note with sorrow that three past grand commanders of this Grand Commandery have been lost to us during this past year. In order of time, the first was Right Eminent Past Grand Commander James (Les) Grigsby who died on January 21, He served as the Right Eminent Grand Commander during We also lost Right Eminent Past Grand Commander Charles D. Stallard who died on June 16, He served as the Right Eminent Grand Commander during Also, we noted with sorrow the passing of Right Eminent Past Grand Commander Donald M. Estes who died on July 28, He served as the Right Eminent Grand Commander during We extend our deepest sympathy and concern to the families and friends of these beloved Sir Knights who were so dedicated to the service of this Grand Commandery and to the York Rite in general. 51

We also note the passing of Sir Knight and Companion Noland Rose, Past Grand Illustrious Master of the Grand Council, R. & SM. He died on September 7, Illustrious Companion Rose was a faithful and dedicated York Rite Mason, who was also honored by receiving the 33rd degree in the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite. He served as the Grand Illustrious Master of the Grand Council of Kentucky in Companion Rose s death was not noted in this report last year due to the closeness of his date of death to the date of our Conclave. Several other Grand Commanderies also have suffered the loss of their Right Eminent Past Grand Commanders during this past Templar year. However, only one such loss has been reported to our Grand Recorder. We extend our fraternal sympathy to the Grand Commandery of South Carolina which lost Right Eminent Past Grand Commander Jesse C. Branham on December 8, 2008 at Charleston, SC. Sir Knight Branham served as Grand Commander during As we come to the close of this time of remembrance and reflection, let us cherish and celebrate the deep fraternal fellowship that we have collectively enjoyed with these Sir Knights during the past years. May we always hold the memory of their dedication and service to this great Fraternity close in our hearts. We will now hear from our Grand Chaplain as he offers a prayer in memory of these departed Sir Knights and for the comfort of their families in this time of mourning. Respectfully submitted, Edwin L. 62 Arius Holbrook, Jr. R.E. Grand Commander PO Box 13 Ermine, KY General Order No. 1 Series To The Grand Commandery Officers, Recorders and Members of the Grand Commandery of Kentucky: Sir Knights: I am humbled and honored to be elected as your Grand Commander to lead our Grand Commandery of our great Commonwealth into the year I know that I have very large shoes to fill left by Sir Knight Foster, but I will do my utmost to keep our Grand Commandery thriving and moving forward into the future. Grand Commander Raleigh made a statement last year, in his acceptance speech last year that, the Boy Scouts motto was to leave their camp in a better condition than when they got there. I also hope to leave our Grand Commandery in better condition at the end of my year of service. I want to thank my installing Officers for a superb job they did and appreciate all the service they have done to have made our Grand Commandery one to be proud of. I also have a vision for our Grand Commandery and we must move forward not backwards. Most of all I want to thank all of you Sir Knights for all the help you give to assure us that we will meet this goal. By the grace of God and your continued help, the sky is the limit. Again thank you from the bottom of my heart for your trust in me. Fraternally, 62

J. B. HITT, II SECRETARY KENTUCKY CHAPTER, PHILALETHES SOCIETY 1007 CHESTERTON PLACE LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY (502) Minutes, September 17, 2009 President Barry Eastham declared the Chapter meeting open at 3:30 P. M. in the general meeting room at Holiday Inn North in Lexington, Kentucky. Opening prayer was offered by Brother J. D. Reeder. There were 27 members and visitors present, a significantly larger number than last year. The minutes were read and approved and the Treasurer s report showing a bank balance of $ was also approved. Brother Randolph Starks of Louisville Lodge # 400 presented his paper A History of Louisville Lodge # 400. He had previously presented this paper at the Past Masters Celebration of Louisville Lodge earlier in the week. It was extremely well presented and drew several comments from the brothers present. Of particular interest were the numerous York Rite Grand Officers who were active in the early years of this lodge. Next, Brother J. D. Reeder read a paper that had been prepared by Brother Eugene Adkins. Gene was fearful that his voice was not strong enough to read his own paper. The title was Apron Symbolism and he covered several changes that occurred over a period of years and cleared up some confusion about the changes. Much discussion ensued, including a recommendation that this paper might be extended to cover the Knight Templar Apron of the late nineteenth century. Following discussion of the papers, the following were elected for the coming year: President Kerry Sluss President Elect J. William Ryan Vice President Joseph P. Giles Secretary/Treasurer J. B.
