5 From Pastor Randy And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:19 Beginning a new year brings with it some reflection on priorities and so I share a story I read last July about Friedrich Liechtenstein. At the time he owned no phone, had no computer and only recently had moved into an apartment after spending two years living, rent-free, in the stairwell of an upscale eyeglass company s Berlin office space, then in its showroom where he served as an ornamental hermit. He soon became an unlikely candidate for Internet fame. While living in the stairwell, during the week, he would wander down in his pajamas to have coffee with the employees as they arrived; after hours, and on weekends, he had the whole space to himself. He slept on plastic crates in a breezeway; his minimal possessions included a silver candlestick and a peach-colored satin vest from Japan. I was intrigued by his comment about the experience: A lot of things you think you need, you don t, he said. I learned all I really need is a bed, a table, nice friends and something to eat. Partly motivated by Mr. Liechtenstein s comment but more so by words of Jesus and sharing life with those who follow Jesus, I ve since been reflecting on my list of all I really need and shedding a lot of things that I ve come to realize I don t really need. The Beatles sang All you really need is love but we also really need each other and so I say Thank you to all who helped make Advent and Christmas worship wonderful to the Our Savior s quilters who come faithfully each week to make many quilts to all those who have helped with ushering, greeting, reading scripture, preparing and serving communion, volunteering in the office, serving coffee on Sunday, bringing bars and serving for funerals to all the Sunday School teachers, music leaders, and confirmation leaders to those who make prayer shawls which are given to Sheyenne Care Center to choir members and organists who add wonderful music to worship to all who make banners and cloths for baptisms to all who help sponsor Missionary for a Day/Global Health Ministries, Radio broadcasts and the Parking lot project to all church council and committee members who lead well this congregation to all staff who laugh, work hard, love God and love God s people to all who give offerings of time and money to help Our Savior s serve out its mission in Jesus name But the Lord answered her (him), Martha, Martha (Randall, Randall), you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing Luke 10:42/Pastor Randy s poetic license version. Come and worship. Offer your prayer, praise and thanksgiving. Go, renewed and strengthened to serve God and God s people wherever you are!
