35 III. Daily Proceedings FIRST DAY Friday, June 2, 2017 Evening Session: 7:00pm Matt Wood welcomed the delegates on behalf of the host church, Abbotsford Church of the Nazarene. He led in prayer, declaring the Assembly was anticipating meeting with God and the work God is doing in our region and among our churches. He declared it appropriate that our District glorify God. Rev. Earl Wood, District Superintendent, thanked Matt Wood and the people of the Abbotsford congregation. He also expressed appreciation to the people of the Canada Pacific District for the encouragement and support expressed to their family at the passing of Vernita s mother a few weeks prior. Rev. Wood welcomed the presiding General Superintendent, Dr. Gustavo A. Crocker and Mrs. Rachel Crocker, to the Canada Pacific District. He read a biography of service concerning Dr. Crocker. This extensive list of achievements described a broad scope of knowledge and world experience. Rev. Wood highlighted that we appreciate Dr. and Mrs. Crocker for choosing to be here with the Assembly. Rev. Wood also welcomed Dr. Clair MacMillan, Canadian National Director, acknowledging him as a valued friend. The worship team, led by Mr. Blair Fuergutz from the Legacy Church of the Nazarene, led the congregation in singing the following hymns and songs: Such Love, Forever, You Never Let Go, and highlighting the scripture passage, Isaiah 41:8-10 (TLB). Rev. Earl and Mrs. Vernita Wood recognized the clergy and spouses of the churches by asking them to stand. Rev. Wood particularly acknowledged the contribution and extensive work the spouses most often provide. Remembrance tokens were given to each of them. Rev. Lorna Bartram, District Director, made announcements regarding registration requirements; breakfast Saturday at 7:45am which will be provided first-come-first-serve for a donation; the ice cream social following the service; a children s program tomorrow; and child care, ages 0-4 for this evening. She then asked the ushers to come forward to take the offering, and offered prayer for the offering. The offertory, Let All the People Praise Thee, was performed by Blair Fuergutz on the piano. Next, the Surrey Chinese Church choirs presented a wonderful song sung in a round, with the combined choirs including young children, youth and adults. They also sang the medley, Amazing Grace-My Chains Are Lost, which was received enthusiastically. The adults then sang a lovely piece in Mandarin. Rev. Dr. Gary Bennett came to the platform to lead the congregation in prayer, thanking the Lord for music which crosses cultural barriers, for the many gifts God, the Father gives; asking for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit, including a special portion for Rev. Wood and Dr. Crocker. He prayed for the Holy Spirit to come upon the Assembly so that the delegation would be 35
