III. Daily Proceedings FIRST DAY Thursday, June 26, 2014 Evening Session 7:00 pm STAND TOGETHER District Superintendent, Earl Wood, welcomed everyone including Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Porter, Dr. Clair MacMillan, Dr. Bill Wiesman and Dr. Riley Coulter. The theme of the weekend is Stand Together. He then introduced the worship team, led by Ed Hicks, who led in the singing of Holy is the Lord, Hosanna and You Are My All in All. All pastors and their spouses, both active and retired, were asked to stand and gifts were presented to them. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, thanked the local churches for being faithful in their ministries and then recognized the local churches who had at least a 5% increase in membership over the past year. They were: Whitehorse, Surrey Chinese, Nanaimo and Primera Iglesia. Certificates were presented to the pastors of these churches. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, thanked the staff of the Abbotsford Church for their hospitality. Rev. Pat Wiens was introduced and welcomed everyone on behalf of the Abbotsford Church. He then prayed the prayer in Ephesians 3: Rev. Lorna Bartram, District Director, welcomed everyone on behalf of the District and then gave announcements and prayed for the offering. The worship team led in the singing of I Will Rise, There is None Like You, and I Give You My Heart, followed by a prayer led by Ed Hicks. General Superintendent, Dr. J. D. Porter brought greetings from the church around the world and expressed appreciation for the worship team. He and Mrs. Porter have been at assemblies all across the country. This is his fifth time to chair on our District. He reminded us that we come together every year to be encouraged, to be held accountable and to hear a fresh word from the Lord. After telling the story of how Earl and Vernita met, he advised they will be celebrating their 42 nd anniversary in July. He then gave some of the history of their pastoral years. Dr. Porter then introduced Earl Wood, who gave his ninth report as District Superintendent of the Canada Pacific District. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, thanked everyone for being here and offered thanks to Vernita, the team in the District Office, the members of the District Advisory Board, the camp and summer ministry directors and their teams. The Assembly offers an opportunity to dwell on the grace of God as we are called into his service. Full-time Christian ministry will be recognized throughout this Assembly. Pastors Gary Nawrocki and Grant Zweigle were recognized for obtaining their Doctorate of Theology. We celebrate our relationship to God by our service and our worship and said that our first priority as a District family is the worship of God. Compassionate Ministries were highlighted in the various churches and in the various forms it takes. He told a story about one of our churches which feed the hungry of their 34

community on a regular basis and how they were blessed through an amazing bequest. The Compassionate Ministries Warehouse and Mission Possible were also highlighted. Church planting is currently being carried out by four pastoral families. Whitehorse church is planting in Tagish Lake; Chilliwack church in Chilliwack; Legacy church in Maple Ridge; and Port Alberni/Nanaimo churches in the Courtenay/Comox area. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, gave a brief history of each one and asked us to keep them lifted in prayer. Two others are in the planning stage sponsored by Magally Figueroa (Langley) and Rigoberto Castillo (Surrey), both Spanish speaking. Leadership development is fundamental and foundational to the ministry of our church. The District, National Board and Ambrose University stand together in providing annual Pastors Professional Days to help in the growth and development of our current and future Pastors. Rev. Lorna Bartram has begun having rally days designed to offer inspiration and practical instruction. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, also spoke about the summer camp ministry, the LAMP ministry, NYI and NMI. He noted we paid just over 100% of our contribution to WEF. He spoke about how the enemy tries to push back the kingdom of God and said that we need to stand together and stand firm. He discussed a joint seminar held in South Peace Country between the Canada Pacific and Canada West Districts. Some of the words the Lord gave them that day were: radiance, sunshine, light pushing away the darkness, a red barn signifying the abundant provision of God, testimonies of God s grace, folks getting the ability to trust in God and God saying, I love you. The Apostle Paul said to be strong and stand together, to put on the full armor of God and be ready to stand our ground and stand firm. Pray in the Spirit on all occasions and always be alert (Ephesians 6). Our labour in the Lord is not in vain. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, spoke about the importance of prayer and gave an update on Rev. Jamie Weberg who will be undergoing a stem cell transplant on Saturday. He encouraged us to take full opportunity of this chance to stand together in the work the Lord has given us to do. He received a standing ovation. Dr. J.D. Porter received the report with appreciation. Everyone was invited to come to the altar for prayer and ask the Lord for a fresh new passion for His Word, His people and the mission He has given us. After a few minutes of silent prayer Dr. Porter led in vocal prayer for the church followed by the Lord s Prayer. The worship team then led in the singing of Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, invited everyone to the ice cream social in the foyer. We were then adjourned. 35

SECOND DAY Friday, June 27, 2014 Morning Session: 8:30 am Our host Pastor, Rev. Pat Wiens, opened by welcoming everyone to the 59 th Canada Pacific District Assembly and said an opening prayer. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, led in the singing of O Canada, and hymn And Can It Be? He then welcomed Dr. Riley Coulter, Chancellor of Ambrose University. Dr. Coulter brought a devotional and then gave an update on Cheryl Bennett, who is doing well following brain surgery. He opened his devotional with a reading on the fruits of the Spirit. He quoted Romans 8:29 and said our mission is to make Christ-like disciples in the nations. The fruits of the Spirit are our character; these are the goal for being Christ-like. To be becoming increasingly Christ-like is to be becoming increasingly holy. He discussed how each of the fruits manifests in our lives and then asked us to seek these fruits of the Spirit for our lives. He closed in prayer. Dr. Coulter then directed everyone to the Reports Booklet for the Ambrose President s report, parts of which he highlighted for Dr. Smith. Dr. Porter thanked Dr. Coulter for his report. He asked us to pray for Ambrose and be generous in our giving to the University and investing in people. He also asked us to be recruiters for sending students to Ambrose. The report was received with gratitude. ORGANIZATION OF THE DISTRICT ASSEMBLY General Superintendent, Dr. J. D. Porter, called the Assembly to order. He called the District Secretary, Rev. Norayr Hajian to give his recommendations. Rev. Hajian recommended the appointments of Moira Bandurka, Recording Secretary; Rev. Lorna Bartram, District Director; Lee Wedley, Clerical and Statistical Secretary; Rev. Wayne Lee, Election Secretary; Shirley Suiter and Lilia Choriego, Pages; Dr. Gary Nawrocki, Assembly Reader and Rev. Norayr Hajian and Lee Wedley, Journal Editing Committee. The front six rows across the Sanctuary plus the platform and the counting room were designated to be within the bar. Rev. Hajian also recommended that the morning business session continue until 12:00 noon, that the afternoon session be held from 1:15 to 5:00 pm or adjournment and that the evening session be held from 7:00 pm to adjournment. Special Order for the day was: 1:15 pm Memorial Service Report Rev. Hajian moved the adoption of all of the above-recommendations and appointments to this 59 th Canada Pacific District Assembly. The motion was seconded and carried. Dr. Porter made a motion to receive the report of the District Superintendent from last night. The motion was seconded and carried. Dr. Porter welcomed Earl and Vernita Wood. Mrs. Wood expressed appreciation for everyone and said it makes her happy to see everyone all together. She gave thanks to God for His love and presence in her life and appreciation for how He brought her to this point in her life in a sharing ministry. Dr. Porter asked us all to pray for them continually. 36

Dr. Bill Wiesman, Director of Evangelism Ministries and New Church Development, was introduced. He is a church planter who has dedicated his life to church planting and has attended all District Assemblies across the country. This is a time of harvesting such as has never been seen before in the life of the church. He gave some statistics. There are 300 million new followers of Jesus around the world in the last 10 years, more than any decade in history. This is our opportunity to participate in what Christ wants to do in and through us. In the USA and Canada at least 30 million do not have a relationship with Jesus. 400 thousand people in our region attend church; our region is growing at a rate of 15%. In Luke 10:2 Jesus tells us how to increase the harvest, and there are no excuses. Lack of workers is the reason our growth is so slow and prayer is the key to open the gate. For years he prayed that God would send workers. God convicted him that he needed to send out workers from his congregation. He said when he let people go from his congregation even more people came in, so more and more churches were planted. The first step is always prayer. Dr. Weisman shared about a teaching ministry for church planting training in the U.S. and Canada. Of 1,075 people trained in the past two years 396 have become certified trainers; 54 have become master trainers who can certify new trainers. 72 new churches have been registered which is equal to the number (70) registered over the last 50 years. The average number of churches closed over the last 50 years is 70, so we ve plateaued. The number of new churches registered in 2011 is new churches started in started in have already started in He spoke about what happens in the churches which send out church planters. 763 people have been through the training to be the prayer force. The goal is for 10,000 new churches to be planted in the USA and Canada by the year 2030 and for 10,000 USA/Canada region missionaries. There are currently 30,000 Nazarene churches around the world, only 700 of which are in North America. He asked the following questions: do we have the faith to believe that the harvest is ripe and plentiful? How long will it take to double the number of churches on the Canada Pacific District? What is my part? He then showed a video on the Dynamic Church Planting Internation training, which cost $35. Dr. Porter told us some of the excuses used for not planting churches and encouraged pastors and lay people not to get in the way of those who want to plant churches. He told a story about a seminary where students had to plant a church to graduate and how a new District Superintendent put a moratorium on new churches and how it made every single church on the District smaller and weaker. He reminded us that God works upside down first you give and then you get. He would like to see 35 new churches on our District in the next five years. Lilia Choriego then prayed and thanked God for the exciting challenge and for our response to it. The Nomination Committee report was read and received on motion. The Board of Tellers and Election Secretary were asked to take their positions. Ballots were handed out, a vote was taken and the tellers were dismissed to count the ballots. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, introduced Dr. Clair MacMillan who brought the National Director s report for the tenth time. He expressed appreciation for the Abbotsford church and for our prayers, specifically for Moncton and the shooting, and explained how it impacted the Nova Scotia District Assembly, to which Dr. Porter responded, Blessed are the flexible for they shall not break. Dr. MacMillan then read portions of his report, following which he discussed the building of churches and their various needs, depending on where they are and how they are funded. 37

Dr. MacMillan thanked District Superintendent, Earl Wood, for his work as Chairman on the National Board and pointed out that Earl Wood is his boss in a way. He then announced that the Church of the Nazarene Canada approved a $300,000 loan to the Southside Community church in Port Alberni just this morning. This announcement was met with huge applause. He discussed where that money comes from and how it is used and expressed thanks for the opportunity to assist local churches through it and told about a bequest of 1.4 million dollars. He encouraged us to have Dr. Coulter come and speak on planned giving and discussed some of the work done by the National office in Canada and around the world through those bequests. He advised that the new Director of Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Canada is Elaine Bumstead and gave a little of her history. He also spoke of Dell Marie Wergland s work at the Compassionate Ministries Warehouse and thanked her for her work. He thanked Richard Bahan for his work globally and who is here representing Dr. William Stewart who wants to make known his newest publication. Dr. MacMillan then spoke about Palcon (Pastors and Leaders Conference) which will be held at Ambrose University in August of They believe strongly in the benefits of this conference, so much so, that each of the Districts will provide a travel subsidy for the lead minister of each local church to attend. The report was received on motion and we were dismissed for a short break. Dr. Porter welcomed everyone back and introduced the seven constitutional amendments to be voted on. Constitutional amendments cannot be edited or changed without a majority vote. Each amendment was read by Dr. Porter and voted on by a show of hands. The first six amendments were carried unanimously and the seventh with overwhelming majority. Details of the amendments are listed in Section C. Assembly Committees; Item 6, Secretary of Elections. A new procedure was implemented this year for presenting the pastor s reports. Rather than each pastor reporting to the entire Assembly, the Assembly was divided (both clergy and lay delegates) into four zones or mission areas with the pastors presenting their reports in this small group format. The small groups met simultaneously and focused on the ministry that each church family was experiencing. This new format insured time for some interaction within the small group but more importantly, provided opportunity for a time of prayer for each pastor, for each church family and for the ministry that each is involved in. Following the reports we were adjourned for lunch, which featured Mission Possible. Rev. Brian Postlewait and Rev. Matt Smedley recounted stories of a few of their clients and gave a few statistics and showed a short video. They then asked everyone to consider sponsorship. 38

AFTERNOON SESSION 1:15 pm District Superintendent, Earl Wood, brought the afternoon session to order and introduced the Memorial Service. Emily McLeod read Psalm 23. Rev. Harold Hoffman led in singing of God Leads His Children Along then Willa Byggdin read the poem We Must Go On. Rev. Graham McMahon read the names of the deceased and led in a prayer of remembrance. What a Friend We Have in Jesus was played by Shirley Harter. District Secretary, Norayr Hajian, read the results of the elections: Elected were: Gary Bennett to the Advisory Board Ministerial; Liliana Arias to the Advisory Board Lay Member; Melony Barber and Robert Gray to the Board of Ministry. The Nazarene Publishing House packages were handed out to the delegates. A video was shown on the US/Canada M15 conference, which happens halfway through General Assemblies, once every four years. Dr. Porter then introduced Richard Bahan, the representative for NPH, who described Dr. Bill Stewart s books. He told a story about a pastor from Quebec who started a church plant in March of this year and already has 35 people attending church in her garage. District Secretary, Rev. Norayr Hajian brought greetings from Dr. Im Seung-an, President of the Asia Pacific Theological Seminary in Manila and the Philippines. Rev. Neil Allenbrand explained that the District Advisory Board, in its March 2014 meeting, initiated action and passed a motion encouraging and enabling District Superintendent, Earl Wood, to take a sabbatical leave during the months of July, August and September, Rev. Allenbrand told us that District Superintendent, Earl Wood, invests in us and we need to invest back in him. Rev. Wood presented a Sabbatical plan which included travel to the Mediterranean region. His responsibilities will be covered by District Director, Rev. Lorna Bartram, Dr. Gary Bennett and the Advisory Board. We are privileged to have leaders such as Earl and Vernita. A bouquet was given to Vernita and a journal was given to each of them. To retrace some of the steps of Paul is one of the things they are hoping to do. Rev. Allenbrand then led in a prayer for Earl and Vernita. Vernita and Earl thanked everyone for this gift and their love. Dr. Porter congratulated the District for the sabbatical policy. He and his wife are also on sabbatical later this year. Dr. Porter asked us what we would learn from the persecuted church if we learned to pray like they did? What would we learn about radical faith and radical prayer? Countries like China are experiencing amazing growth. A PowerPoint video on the persecuted church was shown. Dr. Porter told a story about a woman who had a VBS in her home even though it was illegal. She and her family were put in jail. Her response was that everyone should be thrown in jail for Jesus. Romans 1:16 was read. He recited the prayer of a lady pastor: We pray Satan will be embarrassed in the heavenly realms because of what You do among us here today. He had everyone read Ephesians 6:11-12 and reminded us never to be ashamed of the Gospel and to remember it is a spiritual battle. He recounted some of his experiences with the persecuted church. A Pastor in Vietnam was arrested every Saturday and released every Monday so he couldn t plant any more churches. His life was eventually threatened and he had to leave the country. The church is now legal because they were able to prove it had existed for 15 years by showing all the pastor s arrest records. There was a reading from 2 Corinthians 11: In Bangladesh 3,000 churches have been started in the last 20 years and there are 100,000 Nazarenes. Dr. Porter read Matthew 24:9-14 (words of Jesus about persecution). If you are not suffering opposition you are not a danger to the devil. 39

In Cali, Colombia a conference began focusing on prayer and they have grown from 70 people to over 6,000 people. Their pastor prays bold prayers with bold visions. They plan to erect a building for 12,000 people and also plan to have a church of 50,000 people with several services a week. They believe only using a building once a week is bad stewardship of the building. Ephesians 3:20 was highlighted. Dr. Porter said the persecuted church would teach us to be bold in our prayers. Dr. Porter talked about reaching our Muslim neighbours with the good news. Dr. Porter s wife, Toni, came and spoke about a woman who marches across the stage and leads her people to pray for the empty seats and of the amazing results. We need to pray louder and bolder. Dr. Porter s wife led everyone in learning some basic Arabic words. She told us a story about a man who worked in the Middle East and met a couple of men from Iran. She told a story about their relationship and how God worked in their lives and another story about how God makes bridges between people. She encouraged everyone to pray the big prayer and have the big vision. She then spoke about how women behind the veil train women to evangelize Muslim women. Dr. Porter continued and said when the Lord is looking for someone to go in His name we should be willing to say Choose Me! In the persecuted church people know they may be killed for following Christ but they do it anyway. He told the story of the woman who kept badgering the unjust judge for justice in Luke 18:1-8. And asked who we are in that parable? Do you say OK when the judge doesn t rule in your favour or do you keep asking and asking and asking. If we are not desperate we re saying we don t need God. He told us to not be ashamed of the Gospel; we are to pray in spite of opposition. The heartbeat of a great church is prayer. He broke everyone up into small groups and asked them to first of all exalt and magnify the Lord with gratitude and ask for nothing. The second prayer is pray for someone who needs Jesus and someone else in the group prays for that person by name. He then asked for 12 volunteers to hold prayer guides around the room and people were invited to go to any of the prayer guides and spend time in prayer. The stations were for our finances, the government, Muslims, peace and justice in the world, marriage, sins of the heart, our children, lost family and friends, the RCMP, schools, our personal ministries and the cross. After a time Dr. Porter brought everyone back together for a prayer for healing. In a healing service we are asking the Lord to give us a few more years of mental clarity, freedom from pain, emotional healing, social healing, financial healing, spiritual healing, relational healing, etc. in which to serve Him. When everyone who wished had been for prayer we were dismissed for a brief break. Dr. Porter welcomed everyone back and, one at a time, moved adoption of the following reports: The District Advisory Board report, the Board of Ministry Report, The Board of Ministerial Credentials Report and The Board of Ministry Studies Report. The motion for each report was seconded and carried. Graeme Bartle, the District Treasurer, presented his concern re the financial situation of the District and local churches. He is afraid we measure the job by the amount of money in the bank instead of by the One who calls us to do the job. He briefly ran through the reports as printed. Dr. Porter moved acceptance of the report. The motion was seconded and carried. Graeme Bartle then asked Dr. Porter to pray for the release of the bondage of fear that prevents us from doing the job we are called to do. Dr. Porter thanked God for every single person who tithes in the local church and find great joy in being faithful stewards. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, prayed for renewed faith and a fresh outpouring of a spirit of gratitude and a spirit of 40

generosity and that people would be amazed by what God would do. He prayed for a day of miracles and new vision, new opportunities and new resources and miraculous provision. It was pointed out that the Finance Committee report includes the budget for next year and that the District Advisory Board has met for long range planning. The District has two primary responsibilities: one operational and one in terms of church growth and leadership. The budget has been changed in its layout to reflect these responsibilities and it was pointed out how the income has grown dramatically as money is spent for the development of the church. Dr. Porter moved acceptance of the report. It was seconded and carried. Dr. Porter discussed the Pastoral Support Report and pointed out that minimum is not the goal. He doesn t know what God does with stingy churches who try to starve their pastor but he knows God blesses generous churches which bless their pastors. He moved acceptance of the report. It was seconded and carried. A DVD called Funding the Mission was shown about how our tithes and offerings are used to fund the operations of the church. A copy is available from the District Office. Dr. Porter presented Don Johnson, NMI President, with an award for our District giving 100% of our World Evangelism Fund allotment. Don Johnson remarked that on October 8, 2015 NMI will be celebrating its 100 th anniversary. In honour of that, the District will have a fundraiser to purchase a backpack and a motorcycle to be used in and around Sri Lanka. A video was shown describing how the Jesus film is transported to remote areas by one person with a backpack and a motorcycle. Our District goal for this project is $6,000. Dr. Porter honoured pastors/churches that have paid their WEF allotments in full for ten or more consecutive year as well as churches that have paid 110% or more of their WEF this year. Victoria First and Whitehorse churches were awarded for each achieving 100% a year for ten consecutive years. Vancouver First achieved 100% for nine years and Nanaimo has achieved it for eight years. Churches which gave 110% or more of their WEF budget this past year are Abbotsford, Kelowna, Nanaimo, Victoria and Whitehorse. Dr. Porter said that if we overpay the budget it means we can send more missionaries out into the field. If we don t meet the goal it means fewer missionaries. 70% of the world can t read even if they were given a Bible so the Jesus film is extremely important. Don Johnson said don t ask what s the least I can give, but how much of the resources God has given me can I give back to Him? Dr. Gary Nawrocki read the Christian Action Committee report. Dr. Porter moved the adoption of this report. The motion was seconded and carried. A PowerPoint presentation on Palcon was shown. Dr. Porter stressed that every church should send their pastor to this conference which will take place in August 2015 at Ambrose. M15 is coming up in February and the Nazarene Youth Conference is coming up in July 2015; a video was shown on this event. He asked us to start praying and encourage our young people to attend. There was a motion to adjourn the Assembly after the evening service tonight and a motion to authorize the publishing of the minutes. Both motions were seconded and carried. Dr. Porter expressed appreciation for the District Secretary and all his hard work. District Secretary, Rev. Norayr Hajian, made a few announcements and reminded everyone of the Sending Service tonight. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, thanked everyone for coming 41

and reminded everyone of the Conventions tomorrow. Dr. Chuck and Dr. Carla Sunberg will be the guest speakers. He then thanked the Abbotsford Church for all its work to put this Assembly and Conventions on and reminded us that hospitality is one of the spiritual gifts. He then led everyone in a closing prayer. We were adjourned for a banquet featuring NYI, Ambrose and LAMP. Rev. Calvin Black presented his eighth report as District NYI President. He spoke about the District summer camps at Camp Squeah and the great times everyone had. He expressed appreciation for the help of Matt Wood, Pat and Peggy Wiens and Brian Postlewait. He also spoke about a missions trip to Mexico and the Legacy Youth Conference. He then spoke about the District Spring Retreat held in Tofino and next year s Nazarene Youth Conference to be held in Louisville, Kentucky, in July. He encouraged everyone to reach out to the young people in their churches and connect them to the District youth events. SENDING SERVICE 7:00 pm District Superintendent, Earl Wood, welcomed everyone back and said this is the highlight service of our District Assembly. Ed Hicks and the worship team led in the singing of Take My Life (Here Am I) and Be Thou My Vision. Ed said a short prayer and the worship team led the singing of I Will Rise. District Director, Rev. Lorna Bartram welcomed everyone and gave a few announcements. A folio booklet was handed out to each church as a gift from Dr. Porter. An offering was taken. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, introduced the Celebration of Christian Ministry service. He congratulated Rev. Dr. Grant Nawrocki and Rev. Dr. Grant Zweigle for obtaining their Doctor of Theology degrees in order to better serve the call that God has placed upon each of them. He expressed appreciation for their dedication and hard work over the years while serving their congregations. He presented each of them with a gift as a token of appreciation. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, also acknowledged and honored those who have received their District licenses. Eileen Cook, Desmond Cook, Jennifer Huang, Heather Keats, Brandon Linse, Lorraine Mickelson, Matthew Wood and Aisling Zweigle were granted renewal of their District Minister s License. Paulette Carelli, Savannah Deepwell, Michael Patterson, Rebecca Postlewait and David Zvonar were granted a District Minister s License. Pastor Megan Polowski was transferred in from the Canada West District and Lorraine Mickelson, a District Licensed Minister, was also transferred in from the Canada West District. He charged them to guard with care their families and to minister to them first, to support their pastors, preach and teach with diligence whenever the opportunity presents itself and to work diligently toward ordination. He congratulated them and presented them with their licenses after a solo, Before You I Kneel, was sung by Glennda Bartram. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, then prayed a prayer of blessing on the license recipients as they embark on another year of service. Ed Hicks led the singing of Called Unto Holiness. Rev. Neil Allenbrand read from Romans 10:11 and Matthew 28:19. Dr. Porter gave the definition of a missionary as someone who works themselves out of a job by empowering other people to do their job. He said Commissioning is a moment in time. The second job Moses received was not only to commission Joshua but to encourage him. Our assignment is, not only encourage our new missionaries to the Philippines, but, to pray for them 42

and give them long term encouragement. He had each age group stand (over 60, 45 to 60, 30 to 45 and under 30) and discussed the advantages of each age group in terms of experience and strength. Jesus was only 33 when He died and the apostles were very young. Dr. Porter said we want the youngest age group to take leadership positions in their churches. He then did the same thing with Nazarenes members of 30 years or more, 20 to 30 years, 10 to 20 years and less than 10 years. We need old time Nazarenes for their maturity and experience but we also need new Nazarenes to bring fresh eyes and hearts. The Church of the Nazarene, at her best, is conservative in her message but liberal in her method. Our message is universal but the methods change. The new can be very uncomfortable which he demonstrated by having people cross their arms and clasp their hands and see which hand/thumb is on top and then try to do it with the other hand on top. The new can also be frightening so when people start introducing new methods people get scared. But if we don t change the method we will not keep up with the community around us the church becomes a dinosaur. Doing what you ve always done is a recipe for disaster. The new can actually be comforting, inspiring and transforming. It can give us a fresh new start. We desperately need what innovators offer. God gives you the ideas and inspiration so keep a humble and graceful heart and the church will eventually follow. New strategies and new methods are working so the devil is working hard to create new barriers to our effectiveness. The Lord can handle it but the church isn t keeping up with the creativity of God. Somebody invented Sunday School and brought street urchins into the church to teach them to read and everyone was horrified, but it was a new method which has served the church. The altar service was a high altar and that was changed to a lower altar so people had to kneel and take a humble posture before the altar. Pastors who invited saints to come to the altar for prayer were chastised for that because the altar was for sinners, not for saints. There is new music for each new generation, new culture and new revival. Luther took a German march and turned it into A Mighty Fortress is Our God and the Wesley brothers went to a pub and took those songs and turned them into worship songs. The Anglicans said it was satanic music from the pubs. Songs such as Where I First Saw the Light are testimony songs or praise songs. Handel said hallelujah 55 times in the song. Once would have done it. If you don t want to sing choruses over and over, just sit down. What blesses you and stirs your heart is the music you grew up with. Each generation likes its own kind of music. Be flexible and don t be critical. The church is not for us it is for the lost and we need to do whatever it takes to reach the next generation. Dr. Porter s daughter died of cancer before she was 20 and her favorite song was As the Deer Panteth for the Water. He had everyone stand up and sing it. We then read the words of Paul from 1 Timothy 4:11-16 (MSG). He said our assignment is to take the church to a new place. We must find a way to multiply believers. What we are doing is not working. We are going to have to change the methods and have the courage to obey and the flexibility to deal with the discomfort. We need to do whatever we have to do to multiply the churches. Each one win one, each pastor train a pastor, each church start a church. He asked if we are willing to allow the Spirit to change our minds about what our idea of normal is and step out in faith to let the Spirit lead us. We send our missionaries all over the world and ask them to be creative with the permission of the District but in North America we aren t too excited about change. We need to encourage young people and allow them to do whatever is needed to reach children, young people, adults, seniors and save marriages and bring them to Christ. 43

A creative God will use us, but it won t look like church did 20 years ago. Holding church in a Tim Horton s for instance. Be as creative as the Holy Spirit leads us to be. He then prayed for the vision, hard work and entrepreneurial spirit of the founders of our church and that we will be more creative than Satan and that the Lord will show us how to reach our generation for Christ and encourage and commission them as we follow their leadership. Dr. Porter invited District Secretary, Rev. Norayr Hajian, to introduce Pastors Dr. Grant and Aisling Zweigle as we commission them to be missionaries in the Philippines. He asked all the pastors, their spouses and all NMI presidents to surround them. Rev. Hajian described the studies the Zweigles went through and what they will be doing in the Philippines. Aisling Zweigle will be working with children and Dr. Grant Zweigle will serve as Dean of Students at the Nazarene Theological Seminary in Manila as well as teaching at the University and on the Region. Their children will attend an international school in Manila and become involved in the work of the church internationally. He then presented Dr. Grant and Aisling Zweigle as Global Serve Missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene. A young adult who came to the church through the Alpha course and has been exploring possibilities overseas will be going with them as well. Dr. Porter asked everyone to join in a brief litany and Dr. Riley Coulter sang I Will Not Forget Thee. The Zweigle family knelt and everyone laid hands on them while Kadee Smedley prayed a commissioning prayer for them. Dr. MacMillan led in a closing prayer. Dr. Porter invited everyone to come forward and greet the Zweigle family and then dismissed the Assembly. District Superintendent, Earl Wood, invited everyone to a reception in the gymnasium to celebrate the Zweigle family. Respectfully submitted, MOIRA BANDURKA, Recording Secretary 44

IV. Reports A. DISTRICT OFFICERS 1. District Superintendent STAND TOGETHER Dr. and Mrs. Porter, Dr. MacMillan, Dr. Coulter, pastors and spouses, members and friends of this Assembly: Thank you for joining us for these days of worship. It is appropriate that I begin my report with offerings of thanks. First and foremost thanks to my wife, Vernita, my partner in life. I know you too feel the call of God upon you and you remain vitally interested and involved in this shared ministry. It is a tremendous privilege to stand together with you, in this fulfilling, demanding and exciting ministry, serving the pastors and spouses and congregations of this District church family. Thank you as well to the members of our District Advisory Board and the leaders of our auxiliary councils and leadership teams: Rev. Neil Allenbrand, Mr. Graeme Bartle (Treasurer), Rev. Dr. Gary Bennett, Mr. Mark Kennedy, Rev. Dr. Gary Nawrocki, Mr. Dennis Rainka and, Mr. Peter Steunenberg, Rev. Lorna Bartram, Rev. Calvin Black and, Mr. Don Johnson. You are visionary, courageous, gentle, generous and wise. You are highly valued by the District Family. I also offer thanks to our camp and summer ministry directors: Hayley and Andrew Tarrant (Family Camp); Matt and Monica Wood (Junior and Senior High Youth Camps); Heather Johnson (Kidz Camp), as well as the many people who join your respective teams to serve in whatever capacity they are needed. Your District Family appreciates you and the service you offer. We rejoice in the reports of people who have come to know Jesus as their Saviour and who have experienced the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit in their lives. Thank you to the local churches as you have been faithful in carrying out your ministry in the communities in which God has placed you. We offer congratulations to those local churches which have experienced increases of at least 5% in the number of members received by profession of faith during the past year. The Apostle Paul encouraged his churches by reminding them that their investment in the work God had called them to was well placed and would result in blessing. Whitehorse 7% Nanaimo 6% Surrey Chinese 7% Primera Iglesia 5% The annual District Assembly provides a good opportunity for us all to reflect on the call of God. We believe God draws us and invites us to enter into a faith relationship and calls us to commit our lives to him in selfless and faithful service. The call comes to all of us as children of God. There are wonderful and stirring examples everywhere across our District of your response to the call of God. The District Assembly also gives us the opportunity to reflect on and respond to the 45

specific call of God to full time Christian ministry. The high point of this focus will occur as we emphasize the Christian ministry during our Friday evening service. We will be presenting District Licenses at that time to those who are preparing themselves for ordination. We will also be honoring the Reverend Dr. Gary Nawrocki and the Reverend Dr. Grant Zweigle, who have achieved a significant new milestone this year in having earned the degree, Doctor of Ministry from Nazarene Theological Seminary. Thank you to all of you who understand that the call of God to ministry is really a call to prepare for ministry. We must continually strive to be at our best in our service to God whether we are lay persons who volunteer our time and talents or whether we are professional clergy who are answering the specific call of God to serve in pastoral leadership. We will also spend some time in the same service, acknowledging Aisling and Grant Zweigle s sense of the call of God to a new chapter in their service to Him and offering prayers of support for them. The closing pages of my report contain important information by way of charts which indicate our current numerical status. The people of the Church of the Nazarene Canada Pacific District are committed to loving God and serving Him. This relationship to God as our Father, Saviour and, Sanctifying Enabler is celebrated in our life in our worship and in our acts of service. Our number one priority as a District church family is the worship of God. Our District organization (boards, auxiliary organizations etc.,) is primarily focusing on three aspects of this priority: leadership development; church planting, and; compassionate ministry. Compassionate ministry forms an essential part of our DNA as Nazarenes. To have a heart tuned to the needs of the poor and sometimes marginalized people in our communities is central to who we are as disciples of Jesus. The reality of God s love of needy people among us compels us to think and act with kindness and generosity. We see this compulsion as the call of God upon us, and the response to this call is worked out (quite uniquely) in the congregations of our District. Our response includes food and clothing distribution, ESL courses, participation in other charitable enterprises such as Samaritan s Purse s Shoe Box gifts during the Christmas Season, Work & Witness projects in world areas as well as within the boundaries of our own District, etc. Several of our local churches are involved in demanding and even costly ongoing responses to the needy people of their local neighborhood. One such congregation is not content to merely gather and distribute food (as wonderful as that is), but actually goes to the trouble of preparing meals and feeding people in their church week in and week out. Their ministry has been carried out so faithfully for such a long time that they have been recognized by their city leadership and a neighboring church of a different denomination has begun to share in the work taking over the preparing and serving of meals from our church facility one day a week. This type of ministry (like all ministry) can take its toll in terms of emotional, physical and spiritual energy and is often quite costly as well. The above mentioned congregation, after giving beyond its sustainable energy supplies and its readily mustered financial resources, was reminded first hand that they were serving the Lord of the universe and that you just can t out give the Lord. One day a registered letter arrived at the District office informing us that this local church was the recipient of a financial bequest. I asked the Advisory Board, the local pastor and their board, the founding pastor of the church and neighboring District Superintendents if they knew who the benefactor was, but to no avail. Nobody knew the person who bequested funds to the local church. The congregation has installed a new furnace and air conditioner, new electrical system (replacing the screw type glass fuses), new windows, new front doors, replaced the roof and gutter system, paid their pastor a bonus to his salary and paid a ten percent tithe to the Canada Pacific District which, the local treasurer told me, was the very first decision the local board made when deciding how to use this bequest. When I said to the treasurer, nobody even knows who the person is who gave this gift, he said, I 46

do. The person came to the church for awhile a few years ago and noticed the church s commitment to the poor and, even though they subsequently moved away, felt led to bless this particular local church in this way. In the words of Dell Marie Wergeland, isn t God good! Speaking of Dell Marie, she gives wonderful leadership to the concerted, dedicated ministry of compassion through the Victoria Compassionate Warehouse. Her energy and enthusiasm are divinely inspired as she coordinates and implements the ongoing acts of kindness and generosity of many of you as individuals and as local churches who worship our Lord through your attitudes and actions of mercy. You will hear Dell Marie s report of how God has multiplied your ministry many times over to people in far flung corners of our world. Rev. Brian Postlewait serves as the Director of Mission Possible, a compassionate ministry centre in the heart of what some have called Canada s poorest neighborhood, Vancouver s Downtown Eastside. Mission Possible is giving people a hand up in many creative ways including social enterprises that don t just provide services to clients but provide employment, hope and a new reality to recipients and providers alike. Mission Possible, of course provides meals, clothing, counseling, as well as Bible Study and prayer in its full orbed compassionate ministry. The people of Canada Pacific District are also hard at work planting churches to serve needy people in four communities. Focused, intentional church planting is currently being carried on under the leadership of four pastoral families. Rev. Norayr and Heather Hajian of Whitehorse, are planting in Tagish Lake. Pastor Norm reports: We continue to meet in the home of Myron & Shelley Penner with about 6 to 10 local people that represent up to four families or individuals, as well as about 4 to 6 people who come from Whitehorse to support the outreach. We meet in a home, with a large room set aside for our services. We worship the Lord, we learn together, we fellowship, and we pray. All the markings of what the church should be. And we are very much looking for ways to reach out in the community. Since our last Assembly, we have hosted a community BBQ in Tagish as well as a children's program with a ventriloquist we brought up from Vancouver. We are hoping to host a VBS there this summer. Rev. Graham and Karyn McMahon of Chilliwack are planting in Chilliwack. Pastor Graham reports: There are new participants in the Sunday worship gatherings and the Tuesday missional community gatherings. Their members are taking on growing leadership roles in the community: leading addictions counselling; volunteer leading in the neighbourhood school; coaching in the Chilliwack Football Club; helping lead Chilliwack Food Matters; building garden boxes for the downtown mission, Ruth and Naomi s. After one year of covenant membership, the church is now moving into covenant reflection and renewal, and is welcoming a new covenant family. The Church plant has hosted the New Parish Symposium with 40 participants from Chilliwack, Hope, and Abbotsford. They have been involved in hosting multiple neighbourhood block parties which have been attended by all members of their missional community. Graham enjoys a fruitful ministry as a Chaplain with the Chilliwack Chiefs, the local BCHL team (great home cooked food provided by Karyn McMahon and Brittany Muller every two weeks). Rachel Bryant continues to be a big influence in Pastor Graham s life and the life of our church; she is an inspiration, prayer warrior, and mentor for us all. Please continue to pray for this ministry as they seek to develop an authentic discipleship in everyday life, growing deeper and new relationships with individuals and with organizations in their neighborhood. Rev. Robert and Lara Gray of Legacy are planting in Maple Ridge: Pastor Robert reports: Legacy Café Church is a ministry of Legacy - A Church of the Nazarene. We share the same vision and 47

values and are embarking on the same journey toward intentional discipleship and mission. We are the same local church family, meeting in different locations, encouraging a variety of expressions of being and doing church. At Legacy Café Church we seek to be a fresh expression of church that aims to provide an inclusive, accepting and welcoming space for everybody and anybody who is curious about God and looking for a place to connect. Our time together revolves around coffee, conversation and creative expressions and approaches to living in community. We currently meet every Sunday evening at Waves Coffee House in Maple Ridge it is our aim to build a discipling culture, develop and multiply missional leaders who will lead missional communities (extended family on mission) and ultimately Kingdom Movements. We are grateful to those in Surrey who have committed themselves to join us in Maple Ridge over these past six months as we have endeavored to build momentum and establish a core group of people who live and work in the Maple Ridge area. We have now formed a core team in Maple Ridge of around 10 people. These individuals will make up our first discipling huddle and form the basis of our first missional community. It is our intention that each of the core team will go on to lead their own discipling huddle in the near future. We have also seen people from the Maple Ridge Community who not have a relationship with Jesus and/or who have never been a part of a local church family before come and be a part of our weekly gathering. I am confident that in the coming months we will see people come to faith and enter into a journey to become fully devoted followers of Jesus and discipling others in the same journey. Thank you also to the Canada Pacific District for their partnership (through prayer and financial support) in this new ministry. Please continue to pray for us. Rev. Cal and Rev. Melony Barber of Port Alberni, are planting in Comox/Courtenay. Cal and Melony report: A year ago May on Pentecost Sunday, after much prayer and reflection Pastor Cal and I sent a proposal for an initiative in the Comox/Courtenay Valley to Rev. Earl Wood. This was done out of inspiration to a challenge given by Dr. Porter at the assembly in Surrey Since then we formed a Mid-Island Committee of Pastors for consultation, and prayer. A door was opened to us when the Oldale family requested we come and meet at their home for worship and the Word. We began meeting in January of this year Lemuel and Nona, from the Nanaimo Church, have been a wonderful source of encouragement and help in leading the worship, and helping to build friendships. On Pentecost Sunday we had a wonderful collaborative Mid-Island picnic that was wonderfully supported by Port Alberni, Nanaimo and Comox/Courtenay Valley. We worshiped, prayed, played and shared food together all afternoon. It was a spectacular way to celebrate the Gift of the Holy Spirit which makes us One. We are confident that our faithful Triune God, Creator, Saviour, Comforter-Guide, will lead us forward, revealing, and resourcing His Church. These planting ministries are being supported by our District organization as well as by several churches scattered here and there throughout our Province and Territory. Each of these planting projects has a sponsoring congregation and in some cases a group or cohort of congregations who are banding together to offer prayer, financial and leadership assistance that is highly valued. In addition to the above mentioned church plant projects pastor Rev. Magally Figueroa is gathering a group of Spanish speaking people from various communities in the Lower Mainland. These folks gather with others of our Langley congregation on Sundays and worship in English while gathering mid-week for 48

Bible Studies in the Spanish language. Pastor Rev. Rigoberto Castillo (part of the pastoral leadership of Community Church of the Nazarene in Coquitlam) is gathering a group of Spanish speaking people in his home in Surrey to study the Scriptures mid-week while encouraging them to be part of the Community Church congregation and worship together in English on Sunday. These congregations and groups of congregations are standing together to believe, pray, listen, give, and reach out in various ways as the Lord seeks to redeem lost people to personal relationship with Himself. Will you stand together with them in prayer as they lead these vital ministry projects? Will you stand together with us as we listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit calling us to reach out to the needy people of Langley, South Surrey, Richmond, Vancouver, West Vancouver, North Vancouver, Port Coquitlam, Mission, Southern Vancouver Island, North Okanagan, Prince George, South Peace Country, etc. Leadership Development remains one of the three District foci I want to highlight in my report. We believe leadership development to be foundational to the ministry of our District because in a sense, the two areas of endeavor and interest mentioned above (Compassionate Ministries and Church Planting and Outreach) depend on the leaders among us, both lay and clergy. So committed are we to this idea that almost everything we do as a district organization contains an element of leadership development. The District, along with the partnership of the National Board of the Church of the Nazarene Canada and Ambrose University College stand together in providing annual Pastors Professional Days. The seminars are designed to offer instruction and training in various areas, from theology to sociology to effective leadership models and administrative techniques ~ all of our clergy are invited. The District Board of Ministry leads people who express the call of God to prepare for pastoral ministry, through the course of study requirements and visits with each of our enrollees at least once a year. We have this year, begun a journey back to the future in that our District SDMI Council, under the leadership of Lorna Bartram, prepared and implemented a rally day designed to offer practical instruction as well as inspiration and encouragement to lay leaders along with their pastors, in various areas of leadership responsibility at the local level. The event this year was hosted at our Cowichan Valley church (Mid-Island). People from Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo, Port Alberni and Victoria gathered together and were strengthened for their tasks. We would like to come back and visit again this coming year as well as visit other ministry zones on our District to attempt to develop leaders serving in our churches. Our District Summer Camp ministry is also an integral participant in the work of leadership development. Each year (this year being no exception) the Camp Board which includes our Camp Directors intentionally chooses teenagers, young adults and older adults who are trained and prepared for ministry to those who enroll as campers in our summer ministry. Many of these people return year after year for many years to serve as leaders. The training and mentoring they receive has the cumulative effect of developing our corps of camp servants into Christ-like disciples in whose hearts the flames of the passion and love of Jesus Himself burns. This passion and love cannot help but warm the hearts of others who are coming to know our Lord as their Saviour. Leadership development is crucial to what we are doing on our District. This work comes into full view through LAMP (our Leadership and Mentoring Program). The LAMP ministry, begun and led by Rev. Lorna Bartram is a program designed to develop people of all ages, ethnicity and, both genders into the leaders God is calling them to be and to the leadership the church needs them to embrace. Lorna reports that LAMP is committed to the philosophy that everybody leads somebody sometime and that any and all of our events (even this District Assembly/Conventions gathering) are rich with opportunity to teach and learn as our Lord prepares his disciples for effective outreach into his harvest fields. LAMP has developed to the point where it embraces several aspects of leadership development including: LAMP@Camp designed specifically to prepare camp staff for their ministry; LAMP+ (plus) a first of its kind weekend held 49

this past February 2014 at Twin Creeks Lodge for ages 17 and up, formed to help us discover common ground among the generations, to forge new relationships and strengthen existing ones in the hope of preserving the generations for faith and service; LAMPgirls - a retreat for young women 12 to 20 years also held at Twin Creeks Lodge on the first weekend of April 2014 where we sought to address the question of Who Am I and Who Defines Me? and, Charis our second annual entry level, inter-generational gathering, held on the last weekend of May 2014 for 12 years and older this weekend is the gateway into the ministry of LAMP. During the upcoming year there are plans to begin a LAMPguys retreat and to continue the cycle of retreats and other LAMP initiatives on an annual basis building the LAMP ministry and practices. To this end we are blessed with a bevy of college aged young adults who are jointly funded by various auxiliaries of the District and a local church and who are serving well beyond the confines of one community. They are serving us here this weekend, as well as offering themselves to serve in such wonderful, far away places as the South Peace Country and Comox/Courtenay on the Island where they will reach into the communities spreading the good news of Jesus love through children s ministries. The NYI, under the leadership of Rev. Calvin Black and Pastor Matt Wood, have been very active this year on several fronts. The NYI is integrally involved in cooperative ministries including summer camps, retreat, Work & Witness projects as well as pro-active participants in the Legacy Youth Congress, Calgary. They are represented in the SDMI and LAMP sponsored equipping and discipling/mentoring events. Please pray for the NYI as they lead our young people to become servants of Jesus and his church. The District NMI under the leadership of President Don Johnson has worked hard to keep the cause of missions before us and to remind us that we have an opportunity as well as a responsibility through our WEF giving and in other practical ways, to stand together with believers around the world in reaching out to lost and needy people with the gospel message that God loves people and is working to redeem the world. President Johnson reports that the Canada Pacific District has paid over 100% of our expected contribution to the World Evangelism Fund. There is a lot of ministry work that needs to be done. We simply cannot listen or read or watch the news of our communities and of the broader world without realizing the depths of the needs and hurt of people. Sometimes the newspapers and news broadcasts leave us feeling we are in the midst of darkness. Sometimes as Vernita and I have visited our communities I have felt the reality of the battle I know is being fought as the enemy of God attempts to establish a kingdom on this earth. Sometimes I have felt the effects of the oppressive presence of the one who attempts to thwart the work of the church as God the Holy Spirit pushes back the evil, enemy kingdom and establishes the Kingdom of God right here, right now. The need (and the call) to stand together and stand firm is by no means new. It s as old as the Scriptures. Dr. Rob Snow, one time youth pastor on our District, now serving as a professor at Ambrose University College led a seminar attended by churches from Canada West and Canada Pacific churches located in the South Peace Country a few weeks ago. The seminar focused on the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Believer. We were reminded of the great gift of God Himself to us in the person of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit living within us ensures (among other things) the power of God power that enables us not only to stand our ground in the spiritual battle that rages in our world, but enables us to move forward to take territory for God. Do you remember I spoke about being aware of and experiencing the presence of darkness from time to time? As Dr. Snow reminded us of the gracious gift of God of Himself to the church and as we contemplated this truth and worshipped our Lord we were invited to pause and invite the Lord to speak to us to give us his word for the church in the South Peace Country. I wrote down the words and the word pictures the Lord gave us that day: sun shining; radiance; red barn (abundance); 50

container overflowing; the ability to see truth from error and to trust in God; a hunger for the things of God; eyes with which to see God present and at work; confidence and the lack of fear because God is here and at work; testimonies of God s grace and goodness being spoken; planting turning to harvest; the assuring words I Love You. These are God s words, calling his church to stand together to bring the light and provision of God to a dark and needy society. Listen to the word of the Lord as the Apostle Paul, writing under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit writes to the people of the church who are always on the front lines of the battle: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore, put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled about your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the gospel of peace as a firm footing. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Pray also for me the apostle concludes. (Ephesians 6: 10-19) Paul writes again to the church, what has become a strong, clarion call of encouragement repeated often, at the time when the enemy of God has spoken the last word he is allowed to speak the word of death: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed when the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: Death has been swallowed up in victory. Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers (and sisters), stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. (1Corinthians 15: 51-58) You will note some changes to our usual schedule during our Assembly. The changes are designed specifically to make way for times of prayer. I am hoping there will be time to pray for our pastors in response to their reports as well as time to pray corporately in a wonderful concert of prayer. God is not far from us. He is right here among us. He dwells within us. I believe he wants to work miracles of redemption in us and then through us in the communities in which we live and work. I believe he wants to bring the light and radiance of his presence to dispel the darkness we sometimes experience. Let us take full advantage of this opportunity that has been given us to stand together in His presence as the Holy Spirit renews and resources us to do the work He is calling us to do. STAND TOGETHER Respectfully submitted, REV. EARL R. WOOD, District Superintendent 51

2. Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries District Superintendent Wood, Delegates, Pastors and friends: Last year as I brought my first report to you it began with the first word hesitation but this year I begin with the words gratitude, privilege and excitement because they describe my experience at the district level of SDMI since last we met. More on that later but for now, suffice it to say that we have begun to accomplish aspects of our vision which were articulated in my report of last year. They were: Focus on promotion of our church s discipleship website continuing here this weekend Strengthened district SDMI council we have tripled our meetings over the previous year SDMI website in the process of development at this time Support of CPD camping ministry has been vital and essential to their work this year Partner with LAMP everybody leads somebody sometime TEA (training, equipping and action) Vancouver Island Slightly more than a year ago, hours before the final Sunday morning service of our Assembly- Conventions I left a little early and hopped on a train heading east to Indianapolis to serve as your representative to the General SDMI Convention. Thank you for the privilege of attending. It was inspirational, encouraging and motivating to return to a General Assembly and Conventions. It had been 20 years since I last attended as an NYI delegate incidentally in Indianapolis although not via train an adventure in and of itself and thanks, Don for meeting me at midnight and walking me to my hotel through the darkened streets of downtown Indianapolis SDMI and NMI team work. During the week, our Canadian SDMI delegation met for conversation about our district ministries in the Canadian context. It was beneficial to connect with others from across Canada who are involved in building the impact of SDMI. One of the great benefits of times together such as General Convention; this weekend and other like gatherings is that they collect all of us up, cause us to connect, reconnect, relate and become better acquainted. Each exposure to one another builds upon the last camp is a perfect and easily relatable example of this and that repetitive exposure creates an ongoing relational catalyst as connections grow. As connections increase they ground us on many levels, even organizationally. Those connections sometimes give us the encouragement we need for the road we will travel during the in-between times until we gather together once again. From a structural and organizational perspective, this cycle of gathering and dispersing is very important. It helps sustain us; it sustains the relational tone amongst us, it develops the quality of our leaders, their relationships with one another and their commitment to their ministry - on down the line and over time. Connected people are much more inclined to STAY connected to the church and this is one of the fundamental building blocks necessary to achieve sustained and effective ministry. Connection leads to mutual support and to heightened ministry. Interconnectedness and commitment to one another is a model out of which ministry works at its best a model built on relationships. Without good, reconciliatory, godly, strong and enduring relationships amongst the body of Christ little is accomplished for Christ; yet with them, that which really matters becomes possible and ministry to and through one another is sustained. There are certainly other factors that come into play in developing sustainable ministry such as the initiative of individuals, budgets, leadership availability, commitment, service, sacrifice and more, but relationships are fundamental and, I believe, the foundation upon which ministry rests. Relationships with one 52

another and with the Lord must include responsiveness and obedience to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Attending to these priorities is a challenge but it is essential. If you are involved in people to people ministry you know the truth of these principles let me encourage you to keep at it, do not become disheartened in your ministry to one another and to others. The privilege and work of ministry that occurs under the banner of SDMI is deeply rooted in the fabric of every local church whether you know and identify it as that or not. Such things as Christian education, small group ministries, discipleship ministries, camp investments, agerelated and inter-generational congregational and outreach ministries and more are what SDMI is all about. There is a strong likelihood that the health of these ministries in your local church is related to the general health of your church. I believe that at the heart of every church lies the strength and health that is evidenced through the ministries you are engaged in, both to those who are a part of the congregation (within) and those who are yet to be (without) and that a balance, almost akin to breathing, between these two elements of ministry is necessary and essential to the life-blood of the church. The heart and soul of the ministry of SDMI in your church is people to people ministries where quality and enduring relationships are not the only metrics of success but close. Here s the truth though it s unlikely your church can engage in all of the ministries associated with the scope of SDMI, right? You cannot do it all. I know, because we have grappled with this reality at the district level of SDMI. Yet nevertheless, you are doing the work of SDMI, even though you may not have titled or think of it as such. So, consider the list of SDMI ministries noted above or add your own and identify that which is a part of your local church and you will recognize that which falls within the gates of SDMI. Congratulate yourself and your church. You do have SDMI. At the district level you have an elected council whose members have served during this past year and beyond and it has been a privilege to work alongside each one of them. I can only say that I wish we had more time to work together on SDMI at the district level as these people are committed to their Lord and his church and are anxious to do whatever lies before us to build the ministry of SDMI they are also lots of fun to be around and they understand what it means to be a part of a team. Thank you, Teresa (Fuergutz), Aaron (Austin) and Lilia (Choriego), Earl (Wood) ex officio, for your willing servant hearts and practical contributions this past year. I look forward to another year of building on the foundations developed so far. As well, we are slowly continuing the work of building the appointed membership on the council as this will broaden and strengthen our ministry reach. Our council has come to realize that given our realities all council members are engaged in full time employment, have family responsibilities and local church leadership commitments we too must select particular areas of ministry that we can support and strengthen. Rather than attempt to fulfill the breadth and scope that is SDMI we have determined the breadth and scope of SDMI that we can develop on Canada Pacific - those areas where we can engage local churches - aspects of SDMI that are relevant to our situation, our geographical constraints and our personnel limitations. We have chosen to develop these areas over the next few years. Our geography alone makes our ability to connect at the local level quite challenging but we have determined, at this point in time, to focus on building up three main areas or points of purpose all of which we believe can strengthen SDMI across our district as our leadership team grows and as we intentionally build and offer support to existing or new ministries at the local level. 53

C O N N E C T W I T H L O C A L S D M I L E A D E R S T. E. A. BUILD COUNCIL We intend to do our best to implement these ministry principles through four areas as noted here: With that in mind, a great achievement for us this year was to take our team, with a couple of extra ministry partners representing Camps and LAMP, and head to Vancouver Island for TEA Training, Equipping and Action. On April 12, 2014 we were graciously hosted by the Cowichan Valley church for a day of inspiration as we served TEA training, equipping and action. Our goal was to build connections, encourage people in their ministry, give them concrete tools and resources to help them move forward in ministry and connect us together across the district. It was a wonderful day and we intend to journey across the district to have TEA with you and yours in the days ahead. T.E.A. training equipping action 54
