Please try to support our Memorial Scholarship Program and our Learning Center. I have just returned from Supreme Council Session where I was coroneted a 33rd Degree Mason. The experience was overwhelming!! I remember (really, I do remember this, but not yesterday s lunch) when I first joined Scottish Rite Masonry and those 33rds in the Valley of Buffalo were successful business men, excellent ritualists and leaders in the Valley. When I affiliated with the Valley of Utica, I found the exact same 33 members. I am humbled and honored to be recognized with this honor. 3 SEPT OCT, 2011 NEWS & VIEWS 3 FROM THE EAST Greetings Brethren I am writing this article a little early as Jan and I will be out of the country until August 8 th and I will be late with my message. If you look at the card provided in this mailing, I think you will see we are trying to continue some old and relatively new programs. We are looking forward to the continued joint effort to have All Masonic-Concordant Bodies Holiday Party in December and Valentine Party in February. Please note these dates in your calendar and hopefully you can attend. The more we have attending, the more fun we can have. You will note we separated the Awards Banquet from the Veteran s Banquet. DB Daniel Clark will receive his white hat and we will be presenting DB Russell Berry his 50year certificate and pin as he was unable to attend last year s ceremony. We may have a couple of other surprises as well. Be sure to sign up to attend. November 11th is our Veteran s Program and it will be held at Alee s Restaurant. Hopefully it will be well attended. We are planning something a little different. I would like to see as many Veterans attend as possible. Remember, they do not have to be Scottish Rite Masons to be honored. More to come on this in the near future. At COD this year, Ill Peter J. Samiec 33 Active and Deputy for New York State spoke about brotherhood and the need to reach out to our Brothers. Seventy-five brothers demitted from Scottish Rite in NYS this past year. He urges each Valley to contact these brothers to see if something can be done to altar the situation. We had several brothers suspended for nonpayment of dues this year. I find this equally distressing and am hoping each brother who was suspended will take respond to the letter you received. I would hope you would also give me a call in order that we may discuss your particular situation and be reinstated. It is not too late! It is never too late! Changing course of discussion brings me to January, 2012 when we begin our degree work. Last year we raised four new SR Masons. I would hope we are able to equal that and possibly triple that number. The class will be named in honor of DB Russell Berry 32 MSA and DB Samuel Diskin, 32 MSA. Lastly, I would like to thank all officers for agreeing to take a position as a Valley Officer. We have a great group of officers who will help make the Valley of Utica shine. Greetings Brothers, Fraternally, Ill Stephen C. Park, 33 Commander-in-Chief This is an exciting time of year as we prepare to start a new season of Scottish Rite Freemasonry. It was great to see so many Brothers at the Workers Outing. I m looking forward to seeing you all at the meetings and PARTICIPATING in the Degrees. Remember there is a part for everyone, speaking or no. That is what we do, support our charities and put on degrees that further explore the time tested principles of Freemasonry. Fraternally, William I. Burke, 32 Most Wise Master

4 4 NEWS & VIEWS SEPT OCT, 2011 FROM THE EAST My Brothers, The summer has come and vanished in a blink of an eye, or so it would seem. The vacations and warm summer days and nights are already fading from memory. I hope everyone had a great summer doing those special things we all do. With the return of September, school will be starting, and time to think of our upcoming degrees to be done. Any of the brothers who have attained the 32 may now think of taking, even a small part in the casts need to present the degrees. You will find that by taking part in a degree, it comes much more alive for you. If you are willing and interested, please contact me or the AASR office. The Council of Deliberation was interesting, informative and provided opportunities to renew old acquaintances and perhaps make a few new ones. I extend my greeting to my fellow officers and look forward to a rewarding year of fellowship, work and memorable experiences. Yours in the Faith, Frederick W. Rembetski, 32 Sovereign Prince SAVE THE DATE! ALL MASONIC HOLIDAY PARTY To be held at Harts Hill Inn on December 16, 2011 Details to follow Brethren, I hope this note finds you all well. Our better than we have had in a while summer is fast coming to an end and I hope you all enjoyed it. I am excited and honored to be your new thrice potent master this year. I understand that we already have two candidates ready to take the degrees. This is a good sign. One of my goals this fall is to visit as many Blue Lodges in our district as I can. I am hoping a 5 minute talk will help recruit a few more candidates. Enjoy the rest of your summer and I will see you in September. Sincerely & Fraternally, Terry W. Williams, 32 Thrice Potent Master Program by Halsey Bagg from Mohawk Valley Heart Institute ~Open to the public~ To be held on November 4, 2011 at the Utica Masonic Hall. 6 6 NEWS & VIEWS SEPT OCT, 2011 CHILDREN S DYSELXIA CENTER AT CENTRAL NEW YORK HOLDS RECOGNITION CEREMONY. On June 6, 2011, approximately 100 people, parents, grandparents and friends gathered at the pavilion located on Eastern Star Campus grounds in Oriskany to see their children honored for accomplishments attained over the year in dealing with dyslexia. Twenty two children participated in the year long program. Dr. Kevin Wallace, D.V.M. 97 Cornell University, spoke to the audience about his dyslexia problems as a young person in school and how as an adult at age 28, he faced these issues and went on to become a veterinarian. He spoke about teaching himself to read, beginning with 5 by 7 cards with holds punched through to frame the jumping letters. He noted he was impressed with the manner in which the Center categorized the phonemes, blends and letters to help the children who attended the Center. Grand Patron, Most Worthy John J. Whitney, Order of the Eastern Star, State of New York, congratulated the children on their accomplishments and wished them well. He noted the win-win situation afforded both the Center and the Order of Eastern Star in having the Center located at the home. Several past Grand Matrons have contributed toward the Center as a part of their projects during their year in office. Although not all are pictured, Center Director Linda Martin recognized several volunteers for services performed. Adah Mae Wakelee, Sharon Williams, Sharon Swan, and Pam Fahy for office help and Computer Help: Glen Gardeski and Bill Dougherty. Books and Organization: Lyn Milograno and Money Raiser: Sharon Swan (knitted scarves sold at the Center). Mary and Tom Lindsey were acknowledged and thanked for their work organizing and preparing the walk-a-thon program booklets and Dewey Old Forge Chapter #449 OES and North Woods Lodge F&AM for their work preparing and serving the chicken bbq dinner following the walkathon. Haley SM (right) receives certificate for improvements made. Bryce W. (left) is an example of the success children have who participate in our program. Director, Linda Martin, reported that Bryce has moved forward into level two and due to his age and grade, he has worked Advanced Material, that deal with grammar and word origins. His tutor (John Peschal) had also been able to accommodate Bryce s schedule which allowed him to join the school s bowling team! Robert C (right) listens as Center Director Martin describes the accomplishments he made in a year s time attending two one hour sessions per week after school during the year.

We need your help to raise money- Please join us! Notes from Children s Dyslexia Center-CNY Welcome to my world - Another academic year and summer program completed for our Center. The Recognition Ceremony on June 7 th was a wonderful affair. Dr. Kevin Wallace, DVMD, formerly of Syracuse and now in Oswego, was our guest speaker. He had us (we had over 100 people there) riveted with his determination and inspiration. What a great man and great experience for us. We had five tutors and 12 children attend our five week summer program which has just concluded. If you were able to attend our Recognition Ceremony in June you know that 11 of our children have completed their second year with us and will continue to work on their own or through private tutoring. We have already scheduled 9 of our first year children to return in the fall and are awaiting a response from the other 2. We have contacted 10 new families to offer their child an opportunity to participate in our program in the fall with one of our 5 new scholars. As you can see, we just keep plugging. We cannot thank you enough for your continued support- every year brings new challenges (this year is the year of new computers) that we would not be able to face without you being right there. If you are interested, or know of someone who might be interested in being a part of our program, either through the tutor-training, a donation or a child in need, please contact us. - lmartin@cnyclc.org Phone- (315) Mail- Children s Dyslexia Center- CNY PO Box 638 Oriskany, NY ~Linda L.
