Valhall Viking VALHALL LODGE 6-25 San Diego, Ca May 2017, #4 Ord fra presidenten Summer is almost here, and we will have two more lodge meetings before our summer break. Time surely is flying by. May is our big month of Syttende Mai. There will be several celebrations here in San Diego, and I, for one, will be at all of them. House of Norway has the lawn celebration on Sunday, May 14 beginning with a parade at 1:15. The flag-raising is on May 17 at 9:00 at Sefton Plaza, followed by a brunch. Then Valhall will have its Syttende Mai social on Saturday, May 20. I am so pleased to be asked by the Koskinen family to make a Kransekake for their daughter s wedding on that same day. Gratulerer til Kaarina! I am part of the cast of the San Diego Follies this year, and I am so excited to be participating! We have a very condensed rehearsal schedule, with rehearsals on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays. As a result, I was unable to preside over the April lodge meeting. Thank you, Sven, for stepping up to the plate for me. I will also be in rehearsals for the May and June meetings, and Rick Hausvik and Sven will be covering for me. I hope that you can all come to see us on stage! It is so encouraging to see 80 cast members over the age of 55 dancing and singing, and staying young. We will be at Helix High School for seven performances. Please go to cytsandiego.org for ticket information, and when you purchase your tickets, please give them my name! I hope to see you there The Board had its quarterly meeting this past week, and the minutes are enclosed in this newsletter. I truly appreciate all of the support and dedication from our Board members. What a great group! We are still in need of a VP, though. I am hoping that someone finds that they have the interest in filling this position. It is not a difficult job, and takes very little time. Please let any one of the board members know if you are willing to take on this position VALHALL LODGE 6-25 Meetings & Socials at Ascension Lutheran Church 5106 Zion Ave. San Diego, CA Upcoming Lodge Events Lodge Meeting May 8, pm Social May 20, 2017 Newsletter Deadline: May 23, 2017 Vennlig hilsen, Susan Cody Hurra for Syttende Mai!

Facts about Norway s Constitution Most of us know that the Constitution was signed on May 17, 1814, a day that Norway celebrates today with massive parades and parties annually. But there are plenty more interesting facts surrounding this event, arguably Norway s greatest event in history. Did you know that the Constitution that was signed and adopted is the second oldest written Constitution in the world still in existence today? At the time it was also considered to be the most forward thinking and radically democratic Constitution ever written. Did you know that the Constitution underwent a linguistic revision in 1903? The overall language of the Constitution has basically remained unaltered, and the 1903 language is still used when proposed changes are made to the Constitution. Did you know that the document was inspired by the United States and French constitutions? The main difference was the text that referred to Norway as a Constitutional Monarchy. Did you know that within the famous portrait of the Constituent Assembly at Eidsvoll, about 70 of the 112 delegates present were painted well enough to be identified Did you know that the representatives who put the Constitution together were under great pressure to finish the document? The Constitution was written and signed in 5 weeks. The January 14, 1814 Kiel Treaty said that Denmark would relinquish control over Norway to Sweden. During that transition of power Norway was considered an independent kingdom. In taking full advantage of that control, a Constituent Assembly was put together, a King was appointed and a Constitution was written. Next meeting: May 6, 2017 at 9:00 am at Denny s Restaurant in Fletcher Hills Hostesses: Anne Høidal and Arlene LaBree Scandinavians are not known for their sense of humor. Rather, we have a reputation as a very stoic and practical race. Life is a serious business. To quote the book, Scandinavian Humor and Other Myths*, What can you say about a group that thinks that lutefisk is funny, let alone edible? So what happens at the Ladies of Valhall monthly breakfast, held coincidentally on April Fool s Day? Lodge President Susan nearly stops our hearts with her very matter-of-fact statement that she has to resign her position.just kidding! And Helen asks our opinion on her new googly eyed glasses.lol! I told you I love this group! Arlene made a brilliant suggestion: so that everyone can know what happened at the monthly LOV breakfast, the Secretary s minutes will be included in the Lodge newsletter. Check them out in this issue for more details on what happened at the meeting. I will close with gratitude: to Tam and Anne for an evocative program of Norwegian poetry; to Tam for guiding us to form our plan for the Book Club; to Wilma and Janet for soldiering on with cute Easter decorations for our meeting. Congratulations to Letty for officially joining our ranks and gentle hugs to Barbara as she recovers from her back injury. Hope to see you at the Syttende Mai dinner and other Norwegian celebrations! COMMITTEE AND DIRECTOR REPORTS: Membership: Aprell Bigler reported that we have 3 new members, Glen Larsen, Lewis Dow and Kelsey Oen, Joyce Oen s son. (3) Judy reported that Marc Schaefer will be heading up the committee for the lodge Syttende Mai social which will be on May 20, more details will be printed in the next newsletter. Cultural: (1) Sven talked about the program for the Syttende Mai celebration which will include the San Diego Mannskor and other entertainment. He expressed how sad it is that Ken Paulovich won t be with us this year he was always a big help on the 17 th May celebration. (2) Sven reported on the great visit we had from the Stoughton Norwegian Dancers from Wisconsin. Homestay families from Valhall met them on their first day at the park on Harbor Island where all got acquainted. The group was busy with visits to the Midway Museum, a day at Mission Beach and a great San Diego performance at St. Andrews Lutheran Church. They gave a total of 14 performances in San Diego, Riverside and Palm Desert areas. Near the end of their trip they performed at Sea World, and on the last night the Bardin family invited hosts, chaperones and dancers to their home for a wonderful sendoff. They were truly talented and delightful young men and women. Website: Steve reported that information on the recent Sons of Norway leadership seminar in Palm Desert is available on our website under Announcements. None of our members were able to attend, but the links provide presentation information from the event. Youth: Myla Coleman reported that she is preparing some interesting Viking activities for the children at the upcoming Syttende Mai social. Corporation: no report Sunshine: The Ladies of Valhall sent a card to Barbara Evje who had a painful back injury. A card was sent to Pat Becker and a phone call was made to Carmen Cleary. Joyce Oen has also been suffering with back problems. FINANCIAL REPORTS: (1) Aprell Bigler read the Financial Report and Millie Wright read the Treasurer s Report. A check for $19.08 from Pass the Piggy was written to the Foundation. (2) Susan Cody wrote a grant in January requesting funds for the Stoughton Dancers. Our lodge was awarded $250 for this purpose. This was deposited and the Board will discuss how to distribute these funds at the board meeting next week. REMARKS FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER: (1) Pat Becker thanked Valhall for the greeting cards and said she is finally in her new home and will share phone # and address with Aprell. (2) Sven shared with us the health status of his wife Joyce. She has had many health problems in recent months, including a new diagnosis of a type of Muscular Dystrophy. She also had a stroke in January and is currently rehabilitating in a nursing home. During this time Sven is preparing the house to better accommodate her needs and she is expected to return home on May 1. (3) Janet reported that the Brain Injury Walk was fun and thanked Else and Sven for getting the Hiking Viking team organized. Chuck and Susan Hansen are quite involved with this organization and the Mannskor sings at their Christmas party each Christmas. (4) Sven reminded us that there will be several Syttende Mai events in Balboa Park, including the lawn program on May 14 and the flag raising on May 17. ADJOURNMENT: The next board meeting will be April 19. The next lodge meeting will be May 8. The next social will be May 20. 7 In Recognition of Ten Years of Membership, Veiled Peasant Girls (Tilslørte bondepiker) From Authentic Norwegian Cooking by Astrid Karlsen Scott Ingredients ½ lb. apples ½ cup water 3 8 cup approx. sugar 2½ tbsp. butter 2 cups white bread, dried and ground 3 8 cup sugar 1½-2 cups heavy cream ½ tsp. pure vanilla extract Instructions Peel and core apples, and cut in wedges. Cook in the water until tender. Be careful not to scorch. Add sugar to taste. Stir to the consistency of applesauce, but leave a few whole bits of apple. Cool. Melt the butter or margarine in a frying pan. Add the bread crumbs and sugar. Mix and brown over medium heat. Turn constantly with a spatula as they brown. The bread can easily be burnt if it is not stirred all the time. The crumbs should be a light caramel color. When done spread on platter to cool. Whip cream until firm and glossy, adding a little vanilla if desired. Layer bread crumbs, applesauce and whipped cream in a glass bowl. Place a layer of cream on top. Sprinkle a few crumbs on top for garnish. Serves 4. Sons of Norway awards a 10-year Pin to the following member for his long and faithful service: TenYears of Membership Andreas W. 8 The meeting was held at Denny s Restaurant, Fletcher Hills Minutes of the Ladies of Valhall Meeting Saturday, April 1, 2017 Hostesses: Wilma Springer and Janet Mitchka (Barbara Evje is suffering from a back injury and Anita Reith is travelling) 17 people attended. The meeting was called to order at 9:11 a.m. by President Myla Coleman. Myla Coleman and Letty Cotta Myla presented Letty Cotta with her LOV pin as this was the third LOV meeting Letty has attended. Secretary Pro-Tem Secretary, Millie Wright, read Secretary Sandra Yeaman s minutes of the March meeting. Helen Johnson moved and Amelia Seeto-Murguia seconded that the minutes be accepted as read. The motion carried. Treasurer Amelia Seeto-Murguia read the Treasurer s report for March. Ragnhild Amble moved and Jean Shogren seconded that the report be accepted as presented. The motion carried. Old Business Myla reiterated there is still an opening on the hostess schedule for November. Anyone able to host that month please let her know. Bunads: Myla still has not advertised either of the bunads. However, she suggested this may be a good time to advertise them since it is closer to the Syttende Mai celebration. HON should also be made aware that the bunads are for sale. (Post meeting update: Myla is going to purchase the adult bunad for her daughter.) Valhall Lodge s Anniversary Social was a success. As a part of the Cultural Program an exchange student from Norway gave an interesting presentation about her experiences with her US classes vs her Norwegian classes as well as living with her host families. Mathilda s first stayed with Helga Moore before moving in with a typical family. Helga may bring her to the May 2017 LOV breakfast meeting. (Helga is a Past President of both LOV and Valhall Lodge). Myla Coleman would like to have the Ladies of Valhall meet at the Girl Scouts Headquarters in Balboa Park possibly in July in lieu of a LOV meeting. After discussions it was determined that August would be a better time: August 9, 2017 from 11:00am to 1:00pm including a potluck luncheon. Myla would like the LOV members to see the Florence Burnham Hall while we are there. Details to follow later. Rosemaling wooden Christmas ornaments was discussed and Helen Johnson reported she has a contact for ordering blank wooden shapes at a cost of $1/each. Finished wooden ornaments may also be available; the price was not available. Myla suggested the work on crafts may be able to be scheduled at the HON. Jean Shogren stated that a certain amount of skills are required to do the rosemaling, not many of us have those skills and it could be a burden on those who do. Michael s also has wooden shapes that could be obtained for the children s crafts at the Valhall Christmas Social. Myla also suggested cross stich ornaments as another LOV craft, she will look for a pattern for them. Another craft suggested by Myla is transferring coloring book stencils onto T-shirts for children. Myla has a Scandinavian coloring book that could be used. New Business Sunshine Committee: Millie Wright reported for Barbara Evje who injured her back. Millie sent a get-well card to Barbara. Barbara sent a card to Janet Mitchka and called Else Ottesen stating Else is OK. (I erroneously reported that Barbara called Eldbjorg Backous). The LOV knitting klubb is listed as meeting on Thursdays on the HON website however the LOV knitting klubb does not meet every month. Ragnhild Amble usually initiates the meeting dates but has been unable to do that for a while. It was suggested that perhaps the knitting klubb may tie into the Sewing (social) Klubb initiated by the HON. The Sewing Klubb held its first meeting last month (last Wednesday of each month includes potluck). Tam Stautland stated it was an unfocused meeting. Membership for the HON and doing crafts was discussed. Dale Roybal passed around a Vesterheim brochure featuring visiting a big seed farm in Decorah, Iowa. Dale also had Vesterheim magazines available for LOV members at this meeting. Cultural Committee: Tam Stautland introduced a new book of poems for the LOV members. Anne Høidal gave an overview of the author, Rolf Jacobsen, before she and Tam read the poem. Anne read the Norwegian version, Pusteøvelse and Tam read the English translation, Breathing Exercise. The reason this book of poems, The Roads Have Come to an End, was chosen is that it leads into LOV s Telling Our Story project. Valhall Viking 8 May 2017

Minutes of the Ladies of Valhall Meeting-cont. Saturday, April 1, 2017 Anne Høidal and Tam Stautland introducing book of poems. Tam announced that the next LOV to Read book selection is Neil Gaiman s Norse Mythology and read a review about the book/author. Gaiman s Norse Mythology can be purchased at Barnes and Noble (30% discount or 40% if you are a member) or Amazon etc. The library waiting list for this book as reported by Dale Roybal is 107. There was a motion by Arletta Jurasinski and seconded by Dale Roybal that LOV purchase copies of this book. After discussion, it was determined that this motion is not necessary because so many of the members in attendance want to purchase their own copies and there may be time before the LOV to Read meeting in June that it may be available at the libraries if LOV members want to get on the waiting list(s). Future books will be determined at a later date. The LOV to Read club will meet at the HON every other month at 9:00am on the last Saturday of the month starting on June 24th. The following meetings will be in August 26th, October 28th, December 30 th, 2017, February 24 th and April 28 th, (June 23 rd was mentioned at the April LOV meeting but that is a Friday). Continuing with the Telling Our Stories project, Myla read responses from the members who attended last month s meeting for us to guess who wrote them: Helen Johnson can write right to left like the Arabs Myla Coleman sewed her own wedding gown (we want to see pictures) Tam Stautland climbed to the top of Mt. Whitney We had follow-up questions for the three of them. Forms were handed out to members that missed last month s meeting along with the set of questions to members as prompts to get members to thinking about how to tell their stories, especially as those stories relate to the migration of themselves or their ancestors from Norway. Members will have until May to write their answers. At that point, Myla and Sandra will review the submissions to figure out how best to follow up with the project. For the Good of the Order None of the members with birthdays or anniversaries in April were present. No songs to sing! Susan Cody mentioned her disappointment with the poor Valhall Lodge/LOV turnout for the Stoughton Dancer s performance at St. Andrew s Church. Jean Shogren reported she and Everett went to Sea World to see the performance and were told that the Stoughton Dancers were only rehearsing and the performance would be on Saturday so they missed the performance. Kim and Bob Bardin hosted all the female dancers and invited the dancers and their chaperones to a taco dinner at their home affectionately called The Treetop Resort. Ragnhild Amble mentioned the Music Fellowship Council free Winter Concert will be held at St. Dunstan at 2:30pm tomorrow. Arlene LaBree requested that the LOV meeting minutes be posted in the Valhall Newsletter. It was agreed that this is an excellent idea and will start with these minutes. Myla will forward the minutes to the Editor, Arlene LaBree. Susan Cody talked about her upcoming trip to Norway from June 26 to July 12 th, travelling First Class. Way to go Susan. Susan also informed us that she was resigning as President of Valhall... APRIL FOOLS! Yup, she got us. Helen Johnson showed us her new glasses, I hope a picture makes it in to the newsletter so everyone can see them! April Fools is a lot of fun. Helen Johnson s new glasses Winners of the drawing for the Easter Baskets were Myla Coleman, Tam Stautland, Helen Johnson, Millie Wright, Dale Roybal and Thelma Johannesen. Myla thanked our hostesses, Wilma Springer and Janet Mitchka, and adjourned the meeting at 11:25 a.m. Next Meeting at Denny s: May 6, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. Hostesses will be Anne Høidal and Arlene LaBree. Respectfully submitted, Millie Wright Pro-Tem Secretary Valhall Viking 9 May 2017

CALL TO ORDER: President Susan Cody called the meeting to order at 7:01 PM. There were 11 board members present: they are listed at the end of the minutes. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: The minutes of the January Board Meeting were accepted as printed in the February Valhall Viking, # 1. OFFICER REPORTS: President: Susan Cody reported that Sons of Norway has a new membership drive and passed out buttons for board members to wear to help promote this effort. They say Ask Me About #GROWING TO COMMITTEE AND DIRECTOR REPORTS: Treasurer: (1) Millie Wright reported our current bank account balances and costs associated with the March social. (2) Millie reported that she received a grant check for $250 to support the Stoughton Dancers and deposited it into the Valhall account Social: Judy reported that Marc Schaefer is in charge of our Syttende Mai social. He is considering hiring a local catering company to make the open faced sandwiches. The cost is about the same as making them ourselves and will be much less labor intensive for those on the committee. Cultural: (1) Sven gave a recap about the Stoughton Norwegian Dance group that visited us in March. They gave a fantastic performance at St. Andrew s Church. Audience attendance was low, but those who attended were quite impressed with the dancers. A good will offering was taken, and they received about $600 to help cover their travel expenses. (2) Sven incurred some expenses for food and drink for the Stoughton Dancers. He will be reimbursed from the grant money received and the balance will be sent directly to the dance group. Minutes of the Valhall Board Meeting Wednesday, April 19, 2017 (3) Sven will talk to Marc about entertainment for the May social. The Mannskor plans to sing, and he will see if Thelma Johannesen might be able to sing for us. Newsletter: (1) Arlene brought up the subject of newsletter monthly expenses. Since we order over 200 copies we get a very good price. They are printed, stapled, folded, addressed and mailed for $0.31 each. If we drop below the 200 count, it will be $1.19 per copy. Extra paper copies are given to House of Norway each month for additional publicity for Valhall Lodge. There was discussion on this matter: it seems that many who have internet access prefer to read their paper copy. The lodge is managing expenses well since the move to our present location, so a decision was made to delay making a change in printing at this time. (2) Rick Hausvik made a motion to wait and see if membership declines to less than 200 before we change to online version only. Even if we make that change, printed copies will always be mailed to members who do not have online access. This was seconded by Sven Olsen and the motion was passed. Publicity: Sven will be in charge of publicity for the Syttende Mai social on May 20. Historian and Librarian: (1) Susan proposed deleting these positions for now. The SON Constitution does not require these be filled to maintain the lodge. Janet Coulon volunteered to be the Historian!! She was concerned about not knowing all of the members, but we assured her that everyone would help out. Thank you Janet Coulon!! (2) Sven suggested we do more with digital storage, Steve agreed that more photos could be added to the website. Sven is interested in making some historical mini-slide shows with pictures he has from past years. Steve could upload these photo-collages to the website. No names of people would be included. (3) Paul Lindgren kindly offered to donate some of Ingrid s books to the library, but we do not have room for any more books. We are lucky to have any space for books. (4) It would be wonderful to have a librarian, but for now the honor system would be fine, and the board will encourage members to take a look at our library during social events. Youth: Myla Coleman bought an activity book when she was in Norway, called How Would You Survive as a Viking? It contains children s activities. She will start with a leather bracelet craft at the May social for the Barnas Klubb activity. This will be advertised in the next newsletter. Foundation: (1) Rick will send recent Pass the Piggy funds to SON Foundation Headquarters. The Foundation has 4 main goals: funding local lodge grants, disaster fund for members, scholarships, and estate planning workshops. (2) Rick reported that our lodge is a Klubb member due to our $250 donation to the Foundation. He received a commemorative pin for this. Trustees: Judy reported that the trustees still need to complete a current inventory. OLD BUSINESS: (1) Regarding the By-laws, Rick will request a copy of Vinland Lodge s recently revised by-laws and follow the new format to re-write ours. Susan shared with him a book she recently received called Sons of Norway Book of Directions to help with this task. (2) Rick revised the Standing Rules and went over the changes with the board. Items that were revised include: Meetings are now held on the sec- Valhall Viking 12 May 2017 ond Monday of the month. The social director does not need to choose a band as entertainment for socials. The social director and/or committee can choose

Minutes of the Valhall Board Meeting-cont. Wednesday, April 19, 2017 the entertainment they wish, and pay them accordingly if required. A review of the lodge finances can be requested more frequently than once a quarter. Millie has been providing a monthly accounting report of our balances, which is greatly appreciated. Blood donors should be able to have a free meal at a social whether it is a catered event or not. The amount of half campership awards was revised to reflect an increase in the cost of Camps Trollfjell and Folkehøgskule. Two campers can receive this amount. If more campers apply, the amount will be further divided, with a maximum of 4 campers able to receive partial camperships. If 4 campers apply, each would receive a 25% campership. Pins reflecting years of membership (10, 25, 30, etc.) used to be given out only in October. Now they will be given at the time they were earned, and when the member is able to attend a meeting. Two By-laws were deleted: one had to do with the selection process for delegates, the other about cost for children to attend socials. (3) Sven made a suggestion that social committee members shouldn t have to pay for their meals, sometimes they are so busy in the kitchen they hardly have time to eat. Also, entertainers at socials who are not members shouldn t have to pay for their meal. This can be a policy, not an actual standing rule. NEW BUSINESS: (1) Susan is unable to preside over the May and June meetings due to mandatory practices for her upcoming Follies show. Rick and Sven have graciously volunteered to fill in for her, Rick in May and Sven in June. Thank you to both. (2) It would cost $250 in rent to hold the July Board Meeting at the church. Several board members offered to host it at their home instead. We will decide exactly where at a later date. (3) Steve reported that Mary Beth Ingvoldstad is looking for input from lodges about a potential redesign of 50 year pins. We believe that Headquarters will decide what kind of change they will implement. (4) The Sangerfest is coming up in June. Aprell will send out an reminder. (5) Judy mentioned that there is a problem with the shed windows opening up, and asked Rick if he could fix the problem. Rick will see about placing some screws or glue in the windows to keep them permanently closed. The following members were present at this board meeting: Susan Cody, Janet Weber, Arlene LaBree, Steve Rawlinson, Aprell Bigler, Millie Wright, Rick Hausvik, Sven Olsen, Janet Coulon, Judy Sawyer and Myla Coleman. ADJOURNMENT: The board meeting adjourned at 8:35 PM. The next lodge meeting will be May 8, the next social will be May 20, and the next board meeting will be July 19. Respectfully submitted by: Janet Weber, Secretary Valhall #6-25 Spotlight on Vesterålen Vesterålen, nicknamed the Green Alps, is known for its soft, lush landscape and its prime location for viewing Norway s stunning Northern Lights. The archipelago comprises six municipalities over four large islands and is located just north and east of Lofoten. Located on the edge of the continental shelf and given its proximity on the Gulf Stream path, Vesterålen is an excellent site for whale watching. In fact, the Whale Center in Andenes offers guaranteed whale-watching safaris. Other activities for travelers include hiking, kayaking, fishing and lighthouse experiences. Originally the money raised went to help children afflicted by tuberculosis. Since tuberculosis is no longer the threat to health that it once was, today the proceeds from the resale of stamps helps improve the quality of life for children and youth with disabilities and special needs. Sons of Norway members are the largest contributor outside of Norway to Tubfrim s efforts, sending nearly 30% of all stamps collected. While helping children is a great motivation for our members to participate, there is a special incentive to say thank you. For every pound of stamps collected, the member or lodge can enter a drawing, held in mid-january every year, to win a round trip ticket to Norway, worth up to $1,000.
