1 Godt nytt år! One of my favorite movies during this time of the year is It s a Wonderful Life. My husband sits through it shaking his head wondering why I would ever want to watch a movie that I cry through. I suppose I am a real sap, the crux of the movie is that you touch everyone s life without realizing it, and that in the end, it all comes back to you. Why do I even mention this movie? We only meet at best eight times a year, but honestly I feel that members of our Lodge have touched my life and changed my thoughts on things as I am sure I have done the same. We are all connected by our roots, or blood, but also with a commonality of our community. It is comforting to see our members as well as many non-members that come to our meetings and events, it is the koselig or hygge effect and I more than welcome this feeling, especially at this time of the year. We have a cozy and comfortable lodge and now is the time to shake things up a bit. How exciting to begin the New Year with a new administration for America as well as Lodge Brooklyn. We have new blood in our Lodge and a few of these new members have stepped up to the plate and taken on Officer roles. It s always wonderful to have change and organic growth. I look forward to my new role as President. 2 Page 2 Jule fest with lodge Brooklyn On December 18 we enjoyed our annual Jule Fest. This year we had wonderful open face sandwiches prepared by Solveig and Sigrun and Ester brought the most magnificent Jule cake for us all to enjoy. With the Swedish Meatballs at hand we enjoyed festive music and a few fantastic games as well as singing around the Christmas Tree and doing our laundry as well. It felt like all festivities, but we did manage to vote in our new administration for the new year. Barbara Berntsen will preside over the installment which will happen at our February 19th meeting. 3 Page 3 fra Presidenten to everything there is a season... I want to wish you all the happiest and healthiest New Year! Each year brings changes, it is inevitable. One notable change is that beginning in 2017, the Third District Today (TDT) will be published quarterly (March, June, September and December). The look of the TDT will change too; a committee is working on that now and I am anxious to see our new look. Based on feedback from lodge editors, we will not have a lodge contest in Each lodge editor deserves an award! The amount of time and thought each editor puts into their shows. I love reading them. We have had some changes in the 3D this past year, we have seen some lodge consolidations and we have seen some lodges disband. At the same time, we have seen our lodges gain new members. This is a natural process of expansion and contraction. The 3D Board is very busy with many projects and I hope time will permit us to accomplish them all during the term. LOV is making strides as well, the customers are coming back and weekends have been scheduled; we are hoping for the best and will monitor the financial situation closely. Our sports director is going to get us up and moving in a friendly walking competition; make sure your lodge sports director or President tells you about it. I am beginning to sense and feel a great resurgence of enthusiasm in our tremendous Third District! Our great big Viking ship is moving forward! Godt nytt år Fra Presidenten, Mary B. Andersen,

6 Page 6 about our lodge It is our Lodge s intent to help preserve the traditions and history of the Norwegian and American Norwegian culture. Our Lodge sits in a unique place, near the bridge that connects these two countries. Many of those who came from Norway in the 1900s landed in Brooklyn, and several of these families stayed for generations raising their children, and then their American-born grandchildren. Woven into our history are both sides of the story. Where we come from, and what it was like for our relatives to live in full communities together in America. Lodge Brooklyn has a reputation amongst other Lodges of the Sons of Norway as being one of the most fun, down to earth, and lighthearted groups within the organization.
