1 Valhall Viking VALHALL LODGE 6-25 SAN DIEGO, CA April 2018, #3 Message from the President Spring has sprung! The Easter bunny has probably hopped around the corner by the time this newsletter gets out. Soon it will be time for our summer break again! I am heading to the Rosemaling Seminar at Camp Norge at the end of the month. I am looking forward to painting and gabbing with the other folks that are attending. Hopefully, I won t have snow and hail and rain, (and a flat tire) like the last time I went up there! My plan is to continue on to Salt Lake City where I will do some geneology research at the Mormon library. Then home through Las Vegas. Fritz and I will have a great time, I am sure. Thank you to Judy and her team for a great salmon dinner. The food was delicious and the gathering was quite nice. Tusen takk to alt. Thank you so much to the members who have volunteered to be delegates to the District convention this year. Rick, Arlene, Maury, Graciela, Marc and I will be heading up to the Napa wine country this June. I hope that you will be coming to the April social where we will be having a barbecue. As a special bonus, we will also be celebrating Sig Stautland s 90 th birthday that evening with cake and champagne. Or sparkling cider, if you prefer. Gratulerer med dagen, Sigurd! 6 LOV NOTES March 2018 Next Meeting: April 7 at 9:00 a.m. Denny s Restaurant in Fletcher Hills Hostesses: Peggy Gere, Wilma Springer and Janet Michka An Internet search for Spring holidays led me to an article at Parent.com called 10 Random Spring Holidays You Need to Celebrate. Facebook made me aware of National Puppy Day, but I m sad to have missed I Want You to Be Happy Day and National Potato Chip Day. Good news: Something on a Stick Day is coming up on March 28, and on April 9 you can go by the name you always wanted on Name Yourself Day. As a child, my unusual first name was somewhat annoying because our family name was Joy; you can imagine the confusion when a common first name turned out to be my surname. I m glad I didn t get my brother s choice; I would have been one of a million Debbies in my generation. In March, Girl Scouts celebrated our founding on March 12, 1912 with an event called Thinking Day: troops or groups learn about Scouting around the world by choosing a country, preparing a display and offering a sample of the country s cuisine. My team was gently influenced to pick Norway, as I have shared many Norwegian treats like lefse and gjetost at the holidays and potlucks. I made half a batch of waffles at home but brought some to cook at the event so that the scent wafted through the room. See the page of Fun Facts, compiled by my co-workers (pg, 13) FYI, I let them know that IKEA is from our neighbor Sweden Scholarships & Camperships District Six offers up to three $1000 Academic Scholarships each year to deserving Unge Venner members who are attending any accredited post-secondary schooling or training institution. The District President annually appoints a Scholarship committee to evaluate the applicants and determine the recipients. District Six offers a $1,000 scholarship for a Heritage or Unge Venner member to attend Skogfjorden Norwegian Language Camp operated by Concordia College in Bemidji, MN. Life at Skogfjorden is infused with Norwegian language and culture from the moment you wake up participating in small language learning groups, cultural and camp activities, sports, dance, and song until the close of the day. Two 50% cost of tuition Camperships to Trollfjell Folkehøgskule and two 50% cost of tuition Camperships to Camp Trollfjell are available District wide for attendance at Camp Norge s summer camps in the High Sierras between Sacramento, CA and Reno, NV. For more information about Camp Trollfjell and the Folkehøgskule, go to the District 6 website at www. sofn6.org. The adult t-shirts are ordered and should arrive in time for our April 21 Social and maybe in time for our LOV meeting on April 7. Just in time for us to look snazzy at the upcoming Syttende Mai celebrations. I ordered a few extra as well as the ones on the sign-up. Puppy Update: my husband paid dearly for inattention at the dog park. While he socialized, the little girl was spooked and ran, yanking his arm so hard that the tendon in his arm snapped. Yes, I hear you say ouch. Fortunately, it can be repaired with an outpatient procedure, scheduled for next week. I hope to see you at the upcoming myriad of Norwegian events! 8 CALL TO ORDER: President Susan Cody called the meeting to order at 7:33 PM. There were 12 board members present: they are listed at the end of the minutes. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: The minutes from January board meeting were accepted as printed in the February Valhall Viking #1. OLD BUSINESS: (1) Rick confirmed that the Standing Rules have been revised and accepted. One change from the old rules is that affiliate dues increased to $10. (2) The By-laws are in progress and will be completed by Janet and Rick by the April lodge meeting. (3) We are seriously considering a move to the La Mesa Masonic Lodge. Several board members have visited and the Masons seem welcoming. Judy shared photos from their website of the main meeting room, and it looks nice and large enough for us. A few observations: -There is a convenient location near the kitchen for our storage shed. We would disassemble and move our current shed. -Storage in the facility is minimal. There are kitchen cabinets we can use, but they are high and we d need a stepstool to reach them. -The kitchen is equipped for our use, with 2 stoves, sink and refrigerator, but we would have to purchase coffee makers and carafes. -There is no room for a library. -There is plenty of parking. -No problem with setting up our bar. -Proposed rent would be $450/month. However, they didn t realize we don t want to pay rent for July and August. That issue needs to be discussed by the Mason s board, and we are waiting to hear back from them. -The dates we currently use for meetings and socials are available, with the exception of 2 Mondays per year. For those 2 months we would need to have meetings on the first Monday of the month. -We can hire the custodian who used to help us with cleanup after socials. Minutes of the Valhall Board Meeting Monday, March 12,, 2018 (4) Board members asked what has changed here at the church. We like the location and facility of Ascension Lutheran in general. The pastor has changed since we moved here, and the church council seems to think $600/ month is appropriate for the area. Rick mentioned that one of the church council members he talked to seemed surprised and unaware of the rent increase. He plans to see if that member can talk to the pastor, but it seems unlikely that they will decrease the rent. The church also is requesting that their name be added to our insurance policy, which is not feasible, according to the home office. Myla Coleman made a motion that we should move if we can get a 2-3 year contract with no fees for July and August. Millie Wright seconded and the motion was passed. (5) We have to give 2 months notice at Ascension Lutheran if we decide to leave. (6) Rick, Susan, Allen and Judy will help with negotiating a contract and try to make sure it will be a good fit for our lodge. They plan to include a ceiling for the amount rent can increase per year. NEW BUSINESS: (1) Since the new dues structure will provide $14 in dues from Sons of Norway instead of $5 per member starting this year, Janet W. wondered what we should do with the extra funds. Suggestions were made and it was proposed that members should get a coupon upon renewing membership, which can be redeemed for a free meal at the social of their choice. We thought that Aprell could design the coupon and implement this. (2) Janet W. asked how often members are given information about the lodge s Corporation funds. Rick has that information readily available and it was suggested that he share that financial information periodically at lodge meetings. (3) Rick Hausvik reported that our Corporation investments fluctuate with interest rates and the stock market, but the amount in the fund has been slowly decreasing. This year there will be more expenses due to the District convention in June. FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER: (1) Susan reported that Carmen is teaching rosemaling at her home every Thursday at 11:30. (2) Steve Rawlinson reminded us of the upcoming Nordic Night at the August 31 Padre s baseball game. The board meeting was attended by: Janet Weber, Steve Rawlinson, Maury Lee, Millie Wright, Janet Coulon, Susan Cody, Myla Coleman, Rick Hausvik, Sven Olsen, Ellen Spitzer, Judy Sawyer, and Arlene LaBree. Adjournment: The board meeting adjourned at 8:15 PM. The next lodge meeting will be April 9, the next social will be April 21, and the next board meeting will be July 18. Respectfully submitted by: Janet Weber Secretary Valhall #6-25 Nordic Night at Petco Park Friday, August 31st, is designated as Nordic Heritage Night at Petco Park. See flyer on next page (pg. 9) People can contact Jeanne Teveldahl Scott at jeannescot@gmail.com for more information. We are planning to tailgate before the game. We are purchasing a block of tickets in section 133 (Right Field Lower Reserved) at a discounted price of $ Valhall Viking 8 April 2018

10 Denny s Restaurant, Fletcher Hills Hostesses: Dale Roybal and Anne Høidal 17 people attended. The meeting was called to order at 9:09 a.m. by President Myla Coleman. There were no guests at this meeting. Secretary Sandra Yeaman asked if anyone needed her to read the minutes of the February meeting as they were printed in the Valhall Viking. Jean Shogren pointed out that Helen Johnson was also one of the hostesses at the February meeting. Helen Johnson moved and Susan Cody seconded that the minutes be approved as amended. The motion carried. Treasurer Amelia Seeto-Murguia presented the Treasurer s report for February. Millie Write moved and Joyce Oen seconded that the report be accepted as presented. The motion carried. OLD BUSINESS Lille Butikken for 2018: Anne Høidal shared information about a number of items donated to LOV by Barbara Hemmingsen. Myla has measured the sweaters to get an approximation of their sizes. Anne circulated a pewter spoon. Anne agreed to check with an antique store and art gallery in La Jolla to see if they would accept the framed paintings since she believes we would receive a higher price through them. Adult T-Shirts: Myla reported she has not yet ordered the T-shirts, but she will to have them available at the March Social (March 17, 2018). LOV Hosting Schedule: Myla recirculated the hosting schedule for Hostesses are still needed for May and September. Arlene LaBree and Joyce Oen agreed to host in May. Minutes of the LOV Meeting Saturday, March 3rd, 2018 LOV Calendar of Events: Next week Myla may be able to reserve a space on the Girl Scouts campus for a special event such as a pot luck lunch similar to the one held last summer. Other options discussed included high tea at one of the area locations, such as Coral Tree tearoom at Heritage Park. Dale agreed to contact the Coral Tree tearoom to see if it would be possible to reserve space for our group on the first Saturday of June. Tam announced that LOV to Read will meet on the first Saturday of July and August to fill in for the two months LOV doesn t meet. Myla suggested the possibility of a field trip to Carlsbad Flower Fields in April. She will organize the event. Carpooling is encouraged. Myla also mentioned the possibility of our attending a free concert by a virtuoso guitarist from Grossmont College on a Saturday evening or a Sunday afternoon. Dale reported that articles in a recent issue of Vesterheim magazine report on the first king and queen of Norway and Norwegian experiences during World War I. NEW BUSINESS Sunshine Committee: Barbara Evje contacted a number of members who missed recent meetings. Cultural Committee: Tam reported that she has decided LOV to Read will resume its original summer months schedule, meeting at House of Norway at 9:00 a.m. on the first Saturday of July and August. She asked members to consider books to recommend so that at the next meeting we can choose two of them for the summer months. She would like members with recommendations to provide a short report to explain why we should consider them. Sandra recommends Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. Sandra reported that everyone she knows who has read the book believes everyone should read it. While this book is not by or about Norwegians, it is by a physician about issues of aging. For this reason Sandra believes it is an appropriate selection for our group, all of whom are at an age where discussion of aging-related issues related is appropriate. Tam recommends Knots by Gunnhild Øyehaug. Knots is a book of modern short stories which Tam learned about in a New York Times book review. For the program, Sandra read A Memory of Summer and Dale read My Last Christmas with Mom. The next prompt to spur thinking and memories is Best Friend(s). Sandra invites members willing to share their writings on any of the topics to date to do so at a future meeting. The prompts thus far in 2018 are Summer Memories The First Time Best Friend(s) FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER We marked the March birthdays and anniversaries by singing Happy Birthday to Joyce and Happy Anniversary to Myla. Millie announced she is taking reservations for the March salmon dinner. Thelma Johannesen mentioned that on her way to the meeting, she listened to an old radio broadcast of Treasure Island. One of the actors in that production was Billy Driscoll, who had been her director in one of her earliest professional performances. Dale Roybal reported on a book she recently read, The Leisure Seeker, a Valhall Viking 10 April 2018

11 touching and humorous tale of a woman with cancer who goes with her husband, who has Alzheimer s, on a cross country drive in an RV. The author is Michael Zadooroian.
