1 The VISITOR A monthly publication of St. Luke s United Methodist Church - Kilgore, Texas LOVE GOD LIVE HIS WORD SHARE HIS GRACE MAY 2016 ISSUE 5 Dear Friends in Christ, I am a big believer in the Summer Family Vacation ; a tradition that doesn t need to be expensive to be awesome. Summer vacations are opportunities to explore something new, to give us the opportunity to bond together in a special way, and to put the Awe back into life. In a way, that idea also defines our weekly Sabbath rest. God wants us to take a day out of every week and put the Awe back in our relationship with Him and with others; it is the best way to extract the best out of life. Christians have an advantage when it comes to putting the Awe into the Summer Vacation by applying our weekly Sabbath training to heighten the experience. I love the movie Braveheart, and want to share a quote from the end of the movie that can be a great attitude to take with you in your planning and executing your summer vacation. In the Year of our Lord 1314, patriots of Scotland - starving and outnumbered - charged the fields of Bannockburn. They fought like warrior poets; they fought like Scotsmen, and won their freedom. I love that line and, perhaps because I am a lover of poetry, suggest we embrace the summer like warrior poets. A warrior poet is one who lives the ideal with passion. Here are a few road markers from some of history s greatest poems. When we are planning our vacations, let us reflect upon Henry Wadsworth Longfellow s poem, The Builders. He claims that fate is not random but involves our effort. Indeed, those who do not exercise God s gift to prepare will live incomplete lives. As we journey through the summer, we might reflect upon Edward Sill s poem, Opportunity. He urges us to make a point of making the most of what others cast away, and the best way to gain that edge is the passion that recognizes there is much to lose. Those children grow up fast. Make sure every second counts. When we are setting the goals that define a successful family vacation, you might want to reflect on James Witcomb Riley s poem, Out to Old Aunt Mary s. He claims that the memory s greatest function is its power to filter life experiences and reveal the truest joys of life. Sullen memories are repressed and discarded, but the joys are revisited, reclaimed, and passed on forever. Have a Sabbath Summer! 6 6 So Many Life Choices! How Do I Fit God In? Are you so busy that you don t have time to fit God in your life? We tend to get so crazy-busy sometimes that it feels that we barely have time to breath. It might feel an added burden to find time for God. But guess what? There s no way you can ever fit God in your life. God is way too big for that. God can never fit in your life. If we want to experience God, we need to fit into him. And then it s not a question about finding time for God. Then it s a question about living in him. 24/7/365. How do we do that? We need an attitude adjustment. Daily. Because we are not the center of the universe and it s not about us. God is the center. God is the beginning and the end. God is everything. It s about God. And if we want anything to do with God we need to fit into him, not vice versa. We can t expect him to be at our beck and call or to fit in our busy schedules. There s no box big enough that God could fit in. That s not how it works. When we have the right attitude to approach God, we soon realize that we do have time for God. We do have time to breath. We start our days with a conversation with God. We go about our daily routines by giving thanks. We serve God as we sacrificially serve our loved ones. We do our work for the Lord and not for the company. And we pray without ceasing. For in Him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28, CEB.) There s really no way we can fit God in our lives. We need to fit our lives into God. But the beautiful thing is: Because of Christ we fit perfectly into God. We can t fit God in our lives, but by grace we can fit into God. And God s plans for us are way more wonderful than we can imagine. We need to stop rushing around and trying to fit God in our lives. We need to let God embrace us and enjoy the ride God has prepared for us. by Mari-Anna Sing with the Red, White, and Blue Choir for fun, fellowship, and inspiration! Help with this Celebration of God s Blessings on Our Nation! In order to sing big patriotic songs we need a big choir! Don t sit on the sidelines and wish for something to happen, join in and make it happen! The choir will sing two anthems to inspire and lift up the worship service. We need you to be an active part and make us the best we can be! Join us on Wednesdays in June at 6:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary!

Anna Rohde opened the meeting with a prayer. The meeting was started by Brenda Culpepper who talked about John O Leary s new book On Fire which contains a 7-step plan for living a life on fire, filled with hope and possibility. At nine years old, John, started a fire that exploded and he burned 100% of his body and was given a 1% chance to live. He spent five months in the hospital undergoing dozens of surgeries and had all of his fingers amputated. O Leary shares that without the right people (his family, the medical staff, and total strangers) providing the right guidance, at the right time, he never would have made it through those five months in the hospital, let alone the years that followed as he struggled to regain mobility. On Fire encourages us to seize the power to choose our path and transform our lives from mundane to extraordinary. The business portion of the meeting conducted and the minutes and treasurer s report for the previous month were approved. Anna Rohde then talked about Franklin Graham Shoeboxes. The shoeboxes are filled with small ageappropriate gifts that are distributed to millions of less fortunate children across the world. We chose to fill 12 boxes (6 for girls and 6 for boys) for age group 5 to 9. A list was compiled of what everyone was going to contribute. Our next meeting January will be Tuesday, 28th-30th May 3rd at 6:00 pm in the Fireplace room, with a light meal prepared by Anna Rohde. All women are invited and invite a friend to come with you. -Kathy Brown, Secretary

Shane Shugart (brother of Misty Shipman) UNITED METHODIST MEN The Methodist Men s pancake supper was very successful. We had over 180 customers and made over $400. Thanks to all who came to eat with us, especially the kids. Thanks also to all who helped prepare, serve and clean-up for the pancake supper. The next meeting will be Ladies Night Out, 6:00 p.m., May 19. All ladies of St. Luke s are invited. We have good food and entertainment planned. George Jones, UMM president, is asking for you to please make reservations ( or geo1942@cablelynx.com) so we will know how much to order from the caterer. The Methodist Men meet at 8:00 a.m. in the Family Center for a homemade breakfast, fellowship, & and a good program. Those remaining in 2016 are June 20th, September 19th, October 24th & November 14th. December 12 will be a Christmas Brunch at 10:00a.m. All men are welcome to be a part of something good. -George Jones
