1 November 2017 Pastor Mark s Moment The New Testament accounts of the Last Supper state that Jesus and the disciples sang a hymn when they left. It is quite possible that they sang Psalms , which is part of what is called the Hallel in the Jewish faith. The Hallel was normally sung at the feasts of Passover, Pentecost, Tabernacles and Dedication. At the Passover, Psalms 113 and 114 were sung before the feast, and Psalms after drinking the last cup. While Psalm 118 is a wonderful song of thanksgiving for us to remember during this month, it packs an added punch when you imagine Jesus singing some of the verses knowing He was on the way to the cross Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! Let Israel say, His steadfast love endures forever. Let the house of Aaron say, His steadfast love endures forever. Let those who fear the LORD say, His steadfast love endures forever. Out of my distress I called on the LORD; the LORD answered me and set me free. The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? The LORD is on my side as my helper; I shall look in triumph on those who hate me. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. All nations surrounded me; in the name of the LORD I cut them off! They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side; in the name of the LORD I cut them off! They surrounded me like bees; they went out like a fire among thorns; in the name of the LORD I cut them off! I was pushed hard, so that I was falling, but the LORD helped me. The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Glad songs of salvation are in the tents of the righteous: The right hand of the LORD does valiantly, the right hand of the LORD exalts, the right hand of the LORD does valiantly! I shall not die, but I shall live, and recount the deeds of the LORD. The LORD has disciplined me severely, but he has not given me over to death. Open to me the gates of righteousness, that I may enter through them and give thanks to the LORD. This is the gate of the LORD; the righteous shall enter through it. I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the LORD s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD! We bless you from the house of the LORD. The LORD is God, and he has made his light to shine upon us. Bind the festal sacrifice with cords, up to the horns of the altar! You are my God, and I will give thanks to you; you are my God; I will extol you. Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever! 3 Following an exciting month of major activities the church has settled into a more regular fall schedule of worship every Sunday. It was an exciting time for everyone and now the follow up begins. Church attendance continues good and the youth program continues to shine under the leadership of Tanya and Igor. Splitting into two groups Pre Ten and Teens - has helped each group to be more relational. Attendance for both groups varies between 15 and 30 with an average attendance of 20 for every other Saturday program. Rains and cold are moving in so most of the gatherings will be in the church building. Two of the girls from Krasnopolya are now at college in Sumy and attend Grace Church regularly. They help Alexy and Tanya with the youth program at that church. Annya, Victors wife, reports that progress continues on completing her apartment. All of the plastering and painting is finished and has used up all contributed funds. Recently, another source has provided additional funds has enabled her to order the kitchen cabinets along with all appliances to be installed shortly. She and her 5 year old son went to visit her mother in law at her home outside of Krasnopolya. The boy spent all of the time that he could in Victor's shop with all of the tools, wood and especially the TRACTOR. He did not even want to take time to eat! Her daughter, Kathya, just returned from Spain where she spends 2 months each year at a camp especially for kids with Chernobyl Effect. The seeds of the gospel planted over the years are beginning to bear fruit. Continue praying for the new believers and also for larger worship and meeting facilities. 6 First Baptist Church 2622 S. Bay Shore Dr. Sister Bay, WI F R O M O U R G L O B A L M I N I S T R Y Gil Zinke, Training Leaders Int l (TLI) In late summer early fall Gil was teaching leadership courses to pastors from Uganda at the Africa Renewal University. Three other men working for Training Leaders International ( same organization Gil has served for past few years) were also teaching; one of the men taught Introduction to Counseling in the morning, and Gil taught church administration in the afternoon with an emphasis on training Christ-like leaders. The student pastors and faculty were given a free book from the Gospel Coalition titled Prosperity? Seeking the True Gospel. At the end of the course, these students were encouraged to evaluate and make comments about the material that was presented. The following statements show the student's receptiveness. God's grace working in their hearts and minds, and the need for this organization to be involved in teaching national pastors. Pastor F: He never expected to meet teachers who are humble, gentle, patient and biblical, and he discovered that he mentored people the wrong way. Pastor F was amazed that Jesus-unlike the Pharisees-treated rebellious sinners with love and patience rather than wrath. Pastor D: He knew he had done some fruitful things, but did not do what was most important which is training Christ-like leaders. When Jesus said treat someone like a Gentile or tax collector, Pastor D thought that this meant rejection instead Jesus intended for them to be loved, welcomed, and prayed for, nurtured, and drawn to God's Kingdom for His sake. Pastor B: He became aware that most people are lost; we are not meant just to gain knowledge but to join the lost in their journey; not to teach prosperity, but to bring them to Christ and help them grow to be what God wants them to be. Youth Pastor F: He was proud, and this course made it clear that he was to be humble. He knows many pastors that preach prosperity gospel and now has a desire to make clear the need for preaching the true Gospel. Pastor M: He learned that church administration is about transformation. The definition of mentoring is "to intentionally join someone's life journey to become one of God' instruments to help him become all God wants him to be and do all God wants him to do." After class, one of the pastors told Gil that he had suffered much at the hands of obstinate elders in his church. He felt sure that God had drawn him to take these courses because he was about to quit the ministry. Gill has recovered from this trip and will teach in Ethiopia in November.
