Volunteers will give away water and church material. To participate, contact the church office or Carrie at carrie@oneontafbc.org. We also need bottled water donations. Donated items may be placed in the stairway outside the church office. VBS~JUNE 4-8 9:00 a.m. Noon Prayer Walk for VBS~ Sunday, June 3 after morning worship FAMILY NIGHT~ Friday, June 8, 6:00 p.m. After the program, we will have a fun-filled night here at the church with food and water inflatables! Everyone is invited! *We still need the following food items for the children s daily snack : Graham Crackers, Mini Marshmallows, Mini Chocolate Chips, Swiss Cake Rolls, Plain Potato Chips, Mini Chocolate or Powder Donuts, Pretzel Sticks, Sports Party Mix. 4 LEADERSHIP COUNCIL MEETING Today at 3:00 p.m. in Room 210 THANK YOU NOTES have been received and placed on the bulletin board from Betty Davis & family and Blount County Sav-A-Life. THE GAs AND RAs are collecting items for Her Recovery Women s Shelter as their project for May. The items needed are: Deodorant, Soap, Razors, Shampoo, Conditioner, Sheets, Towels, Cleaning Supplies, Paper Towels. Donations are due today and may be placed in the stairwell by the church office. BEVERLEY BLAKELY MEMORIAL ASSISTANCE FUND The Child Development Center Committee now has a Scholarship Fund entitled the Beverley Blakely Memorial Assistance Fund. This fund will be used to assist families with financial problems with paying their childcare bills for their children enrolled in our CDC. The CDC Committee is asking for donations to this fund in remembrance of a wonderful lady who spent a lot of years ministering to the children and families of our CDC. Please designate your gift on your envelope to the Beverley Blakely Memorial Assistance Fund. ATTENTION STUDENTS If you are planning to attend Samford University this fall and are a member of FBC, you could be a recipient of the Armstrong Memorial Scholarship. Applications are available in the church office. Entry deadline is June 4, SERVE TEAMS We are putting together Serve Teams for our church. These teams will serve a three-fold purpose: When disasters strike, these teams will be able to mobilize to help serve in their specific areas. These teams will be available to help anyone in need in our community. These teams will help our church during upcoming Serve Days where our church will take a Saturday and help those in need in our community. Currently, we have 4 serve teams for you to choose from: Team 1- Outdoor Cleanup Team 2- Ramp & Outdoor Construction Team 3- Painting & Indoor Cleanup Team 4-Visitation If you would like to sign up, there are 2 ways to do so: 1. Fill out a Connection Card with your name, phone number, and the number of the Service Team that interests you. 2. Call the church office and provide your name, phone number, and the number of the Service Team that interests you. Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God. If anyone speaks, let it be as one who speaks God s words; if anyone serves, let it be from the strength God provides, so that God may be glorified through Jesus Christ in everything. 5 Memorial Day The last Monday of May in America is designated for the remembrance of over one million people who have died to defend the freedoms of this great land. The United States flag is flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon in honor of those who have died. But at noon the flag s position is supposed to be changed. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the flag is to be briskly raised to the top of the staff at noon as a statement by the living that we will not let their sacrifice be in vain. It symbolically declares that those who have benefited from their deaths will rise up to continue their fight for true liberty and justice. This simple posturing of the flag on Memorial Day is not commonly known, and seldom practiced, literally or figuratively. Many of us have never marched into battle with weaponry to defend liberty but we are nonetheless called to fight for what is right. I stand in awe of those who courageously fought in foreign lands and wonder how I would have faired in such adversity. My experience will never match theirs, yet I am called to fight. Rather than boot camps and tour of duty overseas, the calling for us today will be found in pulpits, boardrooms, school board meetings, City Hall, Capital Hill, conversations among peers and with younger generations, offices of newspaper editors, and most of all, prayer rooms. Failure to stand up today and fight against the implosion of spiritual apathy and immoral degeneration is the equivalence of treason. On May 15, 2014, President Obama participated in the dedication service of the new National September 11 Memorial Museum in New York City. He stated, No act of terror can match the strength or character of our country. Like the great wall and bedrock that embrace us today, nothing can ever break us. Understandably his remarks were in the context of our response to 9/11, but his final words seemed like a chilling echo of what was said about the Titanic, Not even God himself could sink this ship. The brazen arrogance against God we now see in America is exponentially worse than any threat of terrorism. Unless we experience a spiritual awakening among God s people, we will most likely see the collapse of a nation whose greatest enemies were her citizens who insisted on living in open defiance of Almighty God. In 1984, Ronald Reagan declared, You and I have a rendezvous with destiny. We will preserve for our children this, the last best hope of man on earth, or we will sentence them to take the first step into a thousand years of darkness. Rather than sentence our children to darkness, let s resolutely raise the flag from half-staff to full mast and fight for full surrender to Christ.
