2 Texts and Themes for June: June 01 Acts 1:6-11 Are We There Yet? June 08 Acts 2:1 21 What Does This Mean? June 15 Psalm 8 Why Do You Care? June 22 Matthew 10:24 39 Why Are You Afraid? June 29 Genesis 22:1-14 What Do We Do Now? Sunday School Volunteers Needed! As noted above, Summer Sunday School will meet in the gym during the worship hour for children finished grades K 5. We have chosen a curriculum that is essentially self-contained, and requires very little advanced preparation. What we need are teachers: a team of at least 2 to lead the study, beginning at 10:00 each Sunday Morning. If you are willing and/or interested, come by the Church Office and take a look at the materials. The calendar of open dates will be available for you to sign up. Child Protection Policy Orientation and Screening: In accordance with our Session s Child Protection Policy, a volunteer orientation will be held on Saturday, June 07, at 10:00 A.M. in Fellowship Hall. The stated purpose of the program is to enable our church to work diligently to provide a safe and secure environment for children and youth, while also ensuring the same for adults to whom children and youth are entrusted. If you have volunteered or anticipate volunteering for any activity involving children (for example, Vacation Bible School), you must participate in the Volunteer Screening program, which includes several steps: 1. You will be apprised of the purpose of the program and given a copy of the policy statement. 2. You will be asked to complete a Volunteer Application form and watch the training video. 3. A criminal background check will be conducted by the Volunteer Screening Team (VST). All information gathered will be kept in the strictest confidence; the entire process should take no more than an hour. If you would like to view the introductory video, with no commitment to proceed with the screening process, you are more than welcome to do so. A copy is on reserve in the church office. Presbytery Meeting: Mission Presbytery will meet Friday and Saturday, June 06-07, at San Pedro Presbyterian Church in San Antonio. 2

3 The Pentecost Offering: NOTE: Pentecost Sunday is June 08 Wear something red! Each year on Pentecost Sunday we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit as a bringer of new life. With the Spirit s coming, we no longer need to settle for business as usual but can know the transforming, redeeming love of God that makes the impossible possible. The Pentecost Offering is one of the four Special Offerings of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). When you give to the Pentecost Offering during Sunday morning worship, you help bring God s transforming, redeeming love to children at risk, guide and nurture young people s growing faith and provide opportunities for young adults to become spiritual leaders - all in the name of Jesus Christ. Forty percent of the Offering stays within our own congregation, while the remainder is sent to the General Assembly Mission Council to support other programs that help youth and young adults and advocate for children at risk. What is Father s Day? Father's Day is observed on the third Sunday of June. The holiday is dedicated to celebrating fathers, grandfathers and fatherly figures and their contributions to their families, children and society. Father's Day was founded as a way to complement the already existing Mother's Day holiday which was founded in The individual credited with the creation of Father's Day is Sonora Smart Dodd. She felt called to create a holiday that calls for the celebration of fathers and their influence in society after sitting through a sermon where she heard the story of Anna Jarvis, the woman credited with the founding of Mother's Day. Sonora was raised by her single father along with her five other siblings and this created an extreme desire within Sonora to create a holiday dedicated to celebrating fathers around the world. Father's Day was celebrated for the first time on June 19, 1910 at Spokane, Washington's YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association.) Even though it was celebrated for the first time in 1910, Father's Day did 3

Coffee Fellowship is at 9:30 in the Vestibule followed by church at 10:00 in the Fellowship Hall. Sunday School will be in the gym and run simultaneously with worship. Volunteers are still needed to sign up for a Sunday to teach the Sunday School lesson. Please check with Charlie for available dates and prayerfully consider this important ministry to our youth. We invite you to join the Worship Committee in extending thanks to the following volunteers for their contribution to May s worship services: Communion, May 4: Veronika Camehl for preparing Communion for the May 4 service; Sara Craven, Pati Vincent, Kelly McNeely, and Kay Stanley for serving Communion; Sally Reynolds for providing the Communion wine. May 25 (Memorial Day Weekend) To Boy Scout Troop 49, which our church sponsors, for participating in this inspirational worship service. They posted the colors and took part in numerous aspects of the service. Their presence added to the patriotic mood set by the Music Department; Yvonne, Merlene and Chancel Choir. Wow! You ended the year with a bang! Your duets of America the Beautiful and Stars and Stripes Forever combined with the chancel choir singing God Bless America had everyone bursting with patriotism and pride. You paid wonderful tribute to our veterans and more importantly, homage to our fallen heroes. We are a blest congregation with a long history of honoring those who are or have served and those for whom the weekend represents - our fallen heroes. We are SO lucky to have you! Rev, Marney Wasserman for Pulpit Fill during Charlie s much needed weekend off. You are truly a gifted speaker and your message was a blessing to all present! It was the icing on the cake.... to Holly Hamilton and Lois Atwood our Head Ushers during May.... to all who sponsored flowers in the Sanctuary and especially those who donated them to the Community Table to be made into table arrangements for the diners to enjoy on Tuesday. We had an over-abundance of items to sell - and sell them we did!! Thanks to your generosity the Men s Group was able to clear $2,830 this year. The money we earned will enable us to support many charitable works throughout the coming year.. starting with a $900 donation we approved at the May Men s Meeting for the church s Paint Donation campaign. At the May meeting we also agreed to meet again in June - so ATTENTION: ALL MEN, please join us Wednesday, June 4 at noon in the Café for a catered lunch and business meeting which runs simultaneously to ensure those who need to return to work do so in a timely manner. Make plans to join us! Good things and good food happens at these meetings! 10 MINISTERING TO THE COMMUNITY THROUGH THE USE OF OUR FACILITIES THE COMMUNITY TABLE Where have all the flowers gone? I remembered the title to that 1960 s folk song when I stepped into the Fellowship Hall a few weeks ago to see stunning table arrangements prepared by Harrilyn Tipton from the Baptist Church. She took the floral sprays donated by Rusty and Ingrid Little from their Sanctuary Flower sponsorship and made an arrangement for each table as well as the piano. At the end of the evening the flowers were removed from their vases and given to diners bringing tears to the eyes of a few female recipients. One said she had never been given flowers before. For those who participate in the Sanctuary Flower sponsorship program, consider recycling one or both floral displays by donating them to The Community Table. 14 Ministering to others through Prayer and Prayer Comforters Beverly, Here is the latest news from Cissy Smith, for whose family we recently prayed, and to whom I delivered the prayer quilt that everyone tied knots in... Thanks! Tom Jaggard From: Smith, Sharon E Sent: Tuesday, April 29, 2014 To: Tom Jaggard Subject: News Hi Tom, We had a real miracle happen on Saturday with our little Juliana. After being told her heart was too weak to be operated on (shortly after she was born) and that the family needed to gather to say our goodbyes, we were then told she was a good candidate for a heart transplant. She was put on the list on Monday, the 21st, and we got the call on the 26th that a heart had been found, and so she would have the transplant at 16 days old. This was record time we've been told by the transplant surgeons and nothing short of a miracle, especially since the heart was a perfect match. Surgeons performed the transplant Saturday evening and the heart began beating in Juliana's chest at 1:13 am Sunday morning. She is still in ICU and will be for a couple more weeks, but her prognosis is excellent and she is doing so much better. Just wanted you to know. One more thing, her blanket from your church is in her room while she is recuperating. From: Berta Little Sent: Tuesday, May 4, 2014 To: fpc.churchlady@yahoo.com Subject: Thank You A much belated thank you for a special gift of my prayer quilt. It was such a wonderful unexpected surprise. I love it and feel close to all of you because I keep it close. I am progressing slowly which seems like forever. I am to get started this week on water therapy to get my strength back. How is everyone there? Think of Charlie often and hope is improving with his leg problems. Give my love to all, Berta Sent from my ipad Please pass this on to your church friends and tell them how much their support meant to us. Thanks, Cissy Smith 14

JUNE FLOWER SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE: June 22 Decorate our Fellowship Hall on Sunday mornings in June with the beauty and aroma of fresh flowers, which may be dedicated for a purpose. At the conclusion of the worship service, donors may either take their flowers home to enjoy, or donate them to The Community Table. Host churches divide them up into floral arrangements to grace the tables on Tuesday night. Please Save Box Tops for Live Oak Learning Center Box Tops for Education has helped American schools earn over $400 million since its inception in Because our school earns a dime for each box top we redeem, I am asking for your help. Simply clip the small pink rectangles off any General Mills cereals, Kleenex products, or many other items containing them and place them in the collection bag beneath the big BOX TOPS sign on the Fellowship Hall bulletin board.
