1 Volume 17 - Issue 11 People ministering to people for Christ s sake Time Change: Remember to set your clocks back one hour on Saturday night, November 01. A Season to Treasure : Wednesday night, October 29, marked the beginning of our 2014 Stewardship Season, as Supper and Study resumed with a wonderful meal provide by Nancy Miller. Our study is based on Jesus words, Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. We will be thinking together, and praying together, about the many ways our treasure (time, talents, energy, money) affects our hearts. Topics will be: And Study October 29: Where Is Your Treasure? (Matthew 6:19-21) November 05: Problem with Two Masters (Matthew 6:24) November 12: Giving Your Treasure Back to God (Matthew 6:1-6) November 19: Do Not Worry About a Thing (Matthew 6:25-34) November 26: Break No Supper and Study Sunday worship in November will focus on the same texts and themes, and on November 23, we will have the opportunity to make our personal commitments of giving to First Presbyterian Church for Commitment cards will be circulated to all, and will also be available on Sunday mornings, so we can all participate in the Stewardship Dedication Service on the 23 rd. Look for communication from your Session Shepherd with more information. Please continue to pray for the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit as we consider together how to respond to God s generous provision for all our needs through the mission and ministry of our church.

2 Sunday Morning Schedule Change: Early Worship in the Fellowship Hall will begin Sunday, November, 02, at 8:30 AM. Come join us, all you early risers! All Saints Observance: Also as part of our regular Sunday Worship on November 02, we will observe moments of remembrance for those of our Church Family who have joined the Church Triumphant in the past year. Adult Sunday School: The Adult class continues reading and discussing Mere Shirley and Marcy A mom was concerned about her kindergarten son walking to school. He didn t want his mother to walk with him. She wanted to give him the feeling that he had some independence but yet know that he was safe. So, she had an idea of how to handle it. She asked a neighbor if she would please follow him to school in the mornings, staying at a distance, so he probably wouldn t notice her. The neighbor said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way for them to get some exercise as well, so she agreed. The next school day, the neighbor and her little girl set out following Timmy as he walked to school with another neighbor girl he knew. She did this for the whole week. As the two children walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy s little friend noticed the same lady was following them as she seemed to do every day all week. Finally she said to Timmy, Have you noticed that lady following us to school all week? Do you know her? Timmy nonchalantly replied, Yeah, I know who she is. The little girl said, Well, who is she? That s just Shirley Goodnest, Timmy replied, and her daughter Marcy. Shirley Goodnest? Who the heck is she and why is she following us? Well, Timmy explained, every night my Mom makes me say the 23rd Psalm with my prayers, cuz she worries about me so much. And in the Psalm it says, Shirley Goodnest and March shall follow me all the days of my life, so I guess I ll just have to get used to it!. 2

4 COMMITTEE REPORTS (continued) Notes From the Music Director, Yvonne Jaggard We hope you enjoyed the Processional on October 26 titled Holy God, We Praise Your Name arranged by Bill Ingram. The Choir liked it the first time they rehearsed it. It contained many intricate, but easy moves. Did you notice them ring, tap and thump their bells? Our next selection, a perfect piece for the Sunday before Thanksgiving is titled Praise and Thanks to God arr. Carol A. Scheel. It, too, will be the Processional. Watch closely as a couple ringers must switch bells as notes change from regular to a sharp. We have need for 2 more Bell ringers to replace a couple who had to drop out. We rehearse 30 minutes on Monday at 5:30. The only necessity is a commitment to attend practice as much as possible but most importantly be present for scheduled performances to play your bell. If this intrigues you, consider observing a rehearsal. Chancel Choir We need more voices! Rehearsals are in the Sanctuary on Wednesday evenings at 7 o clock. If you like music, especially singing, JOIN US for an enjoyable, relaxing hour of both! November Offertory Selections 02-Communion Sunday: We Remember You, Words and Music by Patricia Mock, Arranged by Douglas Nolanby Joseph M. 5 COMMITTEE REPORTS (continued) The Chancel Choir presents Mary, Did You Know A Christmas Musical Created by David Guthrie & Bruce Greer Arranged by Bruce Greer Date: To Be Determined (Excerpted from the playbook s Forward written by David Guthrie and Bruce Greer) Mary Lowry and Buddy Greene penned a song a few years ago that has captivated the imagination of people everywhere. It asks a surprising and intriguing question: Mary Did You Know? I think we have always been fascinated by this thought. What must it have been like to mother the Son of God? How much enlightenment did Mary really have? Could she imagine what lay ahead for Him? Was she aware daily of His deity? As my friend Randy Nader has mused, did Mary attend block parties when Jesus was a child to hear the other mothers ask What, Mary, do you think your son is perfect? Well. The Bible makes it very clear that Jesus was fully God and fully man. We know that He...grew in favor with God and man, We know that He was considered a great teacher. Without a doubt, Mary recognized that all which was promised by the angel Gabriel came true. Spending years in His presence made her not just a proud mother, but it certainly made her a believer! We don t know exactly what it was that Mary knew or saw when she gazed into the eyes of her newborn Baby. We can only imagine. But we are firmly convinced that when she beheld His temporarily lifeless form being lowered from the cross, she recognized not only her Son, but her Savior! I invite anyone who would like to sing the Christmas Cantata with the Choir to join us on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary for a 30-minute rehearsal. In addition to a play book each choir member receives a partdominant CD to assist them in learning the words and music. Our only request is a commitment to attend at least 3 rehearsals plus the final rehearsal. 5

16 MINISTERING TO THE COMMUNITY through the use of our facilities The Community Table s Host Schedule DATE HOST FPC COORDINATOR 04 First Presbyterian Church Charlie Schuler 11 Holy Cross Lutheran Church Veronika Camehl 18 Sacred Heart Catholic Church Sally Reynolds 25 Inter-Faith Thanksgiving Dinner Susan Lewis Church cooks, headed by Kay Stanley, will be preparing our signature menu (meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed veggies, bread & butter, dessert [TBD]) on Monday, November 3rd to be served Tuesday, November 4. Volunteers are needed to fill shifts. Because doors open at 4:30 now, arrivals times have been tweaked back a few minutes: Job Description Report Time Set up 3:30 Serving 4:15 Dishwashers 4:30 Clean up/closing 5:30 Volunteers enter through the Magnolia Street door. November is a busy month for The Community Table and FPC in particular - though always spiritually rewarding, the number of diners has historically been steadily increasing to 300 +/- by the first Tuesday in November meal (which we serve.) The number peaks at 400+/- for the Thanksgiving meal... speaking of which, this Inter-Faith Thanksgiving Meal, we have every reason to expect all host churches (which now includes the Catholics) to participate in cooking, serving, cleaning and closing. Of course that also means expenses are split 7 ways - so it is a veritable feast at very low cost to the cash-strapped churches while a real social event for the diners. as well as the volunteers. I m pleased to announce we are again blessed by our reliable friends at HEB who have already notified us they will donate the turkeys (at a cost of $400+/-.) A meeting of all host churches is set for Tuesday, November 4, at 2:00pm in the café to confirm the Thanksgiving menu and decide who provides what. December s issue of the Pres-By-Lines will detail the results. 16

They were then donated to The Community Table to grace the tables on Tuesday, October 14, at the meal served by Coastal Oaks Church. Each arrangement was gifted to a diner at the end of the evening. FLOWERS IN THE SANCTUARY on October 19 were given to the glory of God by Ingrid Little in honor and celebration of husband Rusty s birthday on Tuesday, October 21 and friend Barbara Goodlock s birthday Tuesday, October 28. After gracing our church Ingrid donated her two floral sprays to be enjoyed by guests attending the October 21 Community Table. FPC Coordinator Susan Lewis divided into 14 table arrangements and then offered them to unsuspecting diners at the end of the evening. 20 Ministering in the Community A, The 6th Annual Coastal Bend Day of Giving is set for Tuesday, NOVEMBER 18 and there are now 3 options for donating: 1) Do it yourself by logging onto and follow the step by step instructions. Be sure to designate ROCKPORT -FULTON GOOD SAMARITANS. (NOT the Good Samaritans Rescue Mission.) A credit card is required and a small service fee (it was $2 last year) will be added to it. (Donors who need help with the process may contact the church office for assistance. ) 2) Give your donation to the church and they will do it for you. If using a check, make it payable to First Presbyterian Church and note 'Good Sam Day Of Giving' on the memo line. If using cash, insert it in a pew envelope and note Day of Giving on the face (don t forget to include your name if you want the donation posted to your giving record.) You can also pick up a Good Samaritans donation envelope in the Mission Room (see arrow.) Drop the donation into the collection plate on any Sunday morning through November 16. Then on November 18, these donations will be combined into one amount and donated via internet by The Church Lady. 3) November 18 go to the Good Samaritan Center, 507 South Ann. Volunteers will be there all day to handle contributions. To refresh your memory, the Coastal Bend Community Foundation has enlisted 17 area foundations (more than last year) to match contributions up to $14,285 per charity (more than last year), meaning there is a potential for receiving $28,570 for use locally by the Rockport-Fulton Good Samaritans. Every dollar will be needed as Good Samaritans faces more challenges than ever before. Those challenges include: 1. Closing of the Aransas County Commodities Program: Good Sam is increasing the amount and frequency of the food they distribute to help alleviate the hardship this has caused. They have also begun providing food to shut-in residents and to Senior Center Meals-On-Wheels clients. Last year they provided food for 91,000 meals and will probably increase that to more than 130,000 meals. Imagine the financial impact and the amount of work that requires. 2. Closing of the Texas Workforce Commission facility in Rockport that provided access to food stamp applications and medicare applications for the economically disadvantaged; 3. The federal government is cutting billions of dollars of food stamp benefits; every food stamp client is now receiving less than before. 4, Reduction in Rockport of the Texas Department of Health services; 5, Impending closing of the Rockport WIC office; 6. A tripling of costs in the Kid Care Program. Good Sam provided 407 Aransas County school children with school clothes, school supplies, shoes, underwear and backpacks. A tremendous achievement to be sure but it came at a significant cost, $29,768, which is more than triple spent last year. Thank you for your support of the less fortunate in our community. B. Thanks to the loyal members of our congregation for their FOOD AND MONETARY contributions received on the first Sunday on behalf of the Good Samaritans Center. C. Good Samaritans Christmas Baskets. Christmas is coming and signing up for a Good Samaritan Christmas basket will begin at the Good Samaritans Center soon, continuing through mid-december. While considering a food donation for the first Sunday check the Good Samaritan area display in the Mission Room for a list of suggested items that can be included in the Christmas Basket. Extra monetary donations may also be designated during December for purchase of perishables for the baskets. 20 Janet Gaskamp

21 Ministering to others through Prayer and Editor s Note: The following is from Lupe Yarborough, the meal coordinator for Sacred Heart Catholic Church, who received a Prayer Comforter after I learned she was told the morning they were to serve The Community Table meal that her father had passed away. Not telling anyone out of concern her news would dampen their joy, she forged ahead with a smile on her face. Only when the last plate was served did she give in to her grief. 8:13am Mon., 10/13/14 Hi Beverly, I received the beautiful prayer quilt and your letter last week and it just brought tears to my eyes (happy tears); thank you so much for your thoughtfulness. Please pass along my thanks to all of your prayer warriors! I am so grateful for all of the prayers, they have really lifted us up during our time of grief. My words are insufficient to describe how blessed and grateful I am to you and the wonderful people who prayed for us. Together in Christ, Guadalupe Yarbrough Notes EDITOR s NOTE: A Prayer comforter was sent to Travis and Lola s Smith s daughter in Houston after she completed painful radiation for renal cancer. She then underwent tests to determine her status and results were not as hoped. More cancerous tumors were found. - Received September 2014 Dear Ladies, Thank you so much for the beautiful prayer quilt you made for me. I have it here in my living room and everyone has commented on what a blessing it is. This has been a very difficult time for me and my parents. It is so nice to know that people care and are praying for me. Editor s Note: This is a picture of Susan and Rufus Lewis s friend who received a Prayer Comforter after being diagnosed with Acute Myloid Leukemia and undergoing 28 days of total isolation at M.D. Anderson in treatment for his disease. Please continue to pray for me and my family as we embark on a new phase of my illness. Thank you. Terri Jones. This avid pilot wrote: I am so proud of this!!! Thanks so much!! Buddy Johnson 21
