Beatty Pastor 650 Worth Street Corry, PA PHONE: (814) To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. But the greatest of these is love. I Corinthians 13:13

2 In His Steps All You Need Is Love? When I was in High School I discovered the music of Larry Norman. Now, even in the 80s when I was in school, this guy s music was old stuff he was arguably the first Christian Rock musician, putting out an album in 1970 called Upon This Rock. A few years later he wrote a song called Reader s Digest with the line The Beatles said all you need is love and then they broke up. I love that line the irony and the implications. And even the truth that the Beatles might have expressed but misunderstood. It s February and among the many things we hear about this month (it s Black History Month, National Cancer Awareness Month and we ve got Groundhog Day and President s Day and, well maybe less importantly, National Pizza Day [the 9 th ] and National Cabbage Day [the 17 th ]) we ll hear the word love bandied around a good bit. I would argue that the Beatles were right: All you need is love. But they had no idea (nor did they even try to explain) what that really means. Jesus explains it really clearly: 34 But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:34-40, NKJV) Love God and love people. I realize that Valentine s Day is all wrapped up in all kinds of cultural (and retail!) expressions of what love is. And that s fine. Send a card. Buy some chocolates or a diamond necklace or a car (nothing says I love you like a new car in the driveway I guess ) but don t mistake that with what real love is all about. Those are expressions of affection and they are really healthy for us to, well, express (unless that gift puts you in deep debt that s never a good thing ). But what about love? I would argue that among the people you might send a card (or a more personal gift) as an indication of your affection on Valentine s Day, it is what you do and don t do the other 364 days of the year that really expresses your love for that person. Mother Teresa (who I believe is now considered Saint Teresa) once said, There is more hunger for love and appreciation in this world than for bread. Say what you will about her, she had a way of making small statements that get to the heart of the matter, and in a few words illuminate the heart of God. Who around you needs bread that is, the basics of life? There are some, I know there are, and we are right to reach out and alleviate suffering as much as we can. But we also live in a culture, a community maybe even a family where there is more than one kind of suffering. We are more connected today than we ever have been in history and we are more isolated than we have ever been. Who do you know who needs love? Who needs a word of appreciation? All you need is love. It s true. And here s what that love looks like: 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (1 Corinthians 13:4-7, NIV) So, give your gifts of affection this Valentine s Day. And spend the rest of the month, and the rest of the year, offering yourself as a gift of love. True love. Jesus said, in essence, it s all we need. In Christ s Love, Pastor Bill

3 In just a few short days, our youth group (plus two other youth groups!) will be headed to our annual winter weekend retreat, Snowbound! Excited isn t really the word for the emotion that I feel anymore the word craving is more accurate! I crave the Spirit-filled, electric atmosphere in which everyone is expectant and ready for God to do a great work in them, because they have seen many times how God has moved and worked there in the past. God shows up in a huge way, and after years of prayer for this event, we have come to expect that He will. And this made me think why don t I expect God to show up this way in my every week? Why don t I come to church on Sunday expectant and ready for God to move powerfully? Why don t I expect God to move powerfully in my family? Why is it that this weekend has to be different from the other weekends of my life? Maybe you ask yourself the same questions sometimes where is God in my life? I m pretty confident that the problem lies not with God, but with me I am the one who has stopped expecting God to show up powerfully in my everyday life. I need to remember that God is present, and He is able, and He will show up but sometimes we have to exercise faith and believe with our whole hearts that He will follow through on His promises His promise that He isn t done working on us, His promise that He will never leave us, and His promise that He will comfort us. What is it like when God shows up? Luckily, we aren t the first ones to ask that question in Isaiah 35, God explains what it is like when He interacts powerfully with us: Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers and singing and joy! The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon, as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon. There the LORD will display his glory, the splendor of our God. 3 With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands, and encourage those who have weak knees. 4 Say to those with fearful hearts, Be strong, and do not fear, for your God is coming to destroy your enemies. He is coming to save you. 5 And when he comes, he will open the eyes of the blind and unplug the ears of the deaf. The lame will leap like a deer, and those who cannot speak will sing for joy! Springs will gush forth in the wilderness, and streams will water the wasteland. Isaiah 35:2-6 NLT Are we ready for God to move like this in our lives? It s my prayer that I would be ready - not just one weekend of the year but every day of the year. ><> Sarah

7 Hi Everyone, Just wanted to get off a quick note about our work yesterday (2/6). More than a dozen folks gathered at Chosen yesterday to load a 40 ft. container with wheel chairs, adaptive equipment, medical supplies, clothing, shoes, and some supplies for a missionary family who will soon be heading to Guatemala to live and work. Other than the truck being late, everything went really smoothly. What a blessing it was to see each one come through that door. My Great Grandma used to say, "many hands make light the work". Not sure it was so light, especially for those up in the container packing it high and tight to get it all in, but in less than 3 hours we had it all in there. Thanks to everyone who helped in anyway to make this happen and to the crew at Chosen for all their help with storage, collections, running the forklift and all the little ways they help, day to day. Blessings, Debbie Hills, Ramps of Hope God is Good.. Helping with Missions in our Backyard. Participants from Corry First Kim and Sue Forrest, Ron and Connie Sitterley, and Parker Brown..
