This is a quote from Aristotle who, based on his moral concept of Virtue Theory, can be correlated with that of the teachings of Freemasonry. Like Freemasonry, Aristotle follows Socrates and Plato in taking the virtues to be central to a well-lived life. The quote could be interpreted as means of pursing further light and that you should not be discouraged if your quest for knowledge transpires to more questions than answers. As Master of Tucson Lodge #4, certain decisions require the input and consultation by those who have the knowledge and experience on specific issues. I am not one to be hasty with decisions but instead base my judgements on rationalizing the information that has been provided. Therefore it is essential to promote communication between the Master and Brethren and vice versa. March has been another active month starting with the Fellowship Breakfast and a great turnout of brethren to see the Don Giovanni opera. The Junior Warden and Stewards prepared an excellent steak dinner for Past Master s night and a 1 st Degree was exemplified by the Past Masters in proper style. Tucson Lodge was the host for the Arizona Chapter DeMolay Installation with the Arizona State DeMolay officers performing the installation and great refreshments afterwards. We had our first potluck dinner for the year and a Master Mason degree to close the month. April will begin with the Officer Retreat in Casa Grande the first weekend of the month. Due to the absence of the officers and others, Apr 1st-3rd April 2016 Calendar GL Officer Retreat - Casa Grande Apr 4h Official Visit - King Solomon #5 Crystal Palace, Tombstone 6 pm Apr 6th Apr 7th Apr 12th Apr 13th Apr 14th Apr 20th Apr 21st Apr 27th Apr 28th Apr 30th Stated Meeting Dinner 6pm Stated Meeting 7pm Masonic Education 6:30 pm First Degree 7 pm Degree Practice 6:30 pm Third Degree 6:30 pm Deadwood Breakfast Laverna s Coffee Shop Please remember to register for the Stated Dinner by contacting the Secretary at or , or by TL4SO@hotmail.com the Fellowship Breakfast will be cancelled for April. We are also planning a trip to visit our Brethren at King Solomon Lodge in Tombstone on Monday, April 4. I expect that we will have at least two degrees in April along with our Masonic Education night. Finally, leading us into May we will be hosting the Widows Luncheon at the Gaslight Theatre on Sunday, May 1 st. -Fraternally, Jon Schmidt,Worshipful Master 2016 Dues are Now Payable to the Lodge. Please check your Dues Card. It should be Yellow for 2016.
2 Brethren, From The West March is a time for rebirth and renewal as it opens the gateway to Spring, but before we turn too hastily toward what lies ahead, I wish to acknowledge the good works being done week in and week out at Tucson Lodge #4 by the many who give so much of their time and themselves to improve our fraternity and its prospects for the future. Without these folks and their efforts, we would become a group of names fading and dwindling into obscurity, rather than the family that we have formed. Our Past Masters have established the traditions that we hold dear and stand by the current line of officers as sturdy supports whenever we need their skills, counsel, or gentle recommendations for enhancing the quality of our Masonic lives. Rich Hall and Bob Conrad provide a portal through which the men of the world outside our lodge building may pass to discover if they and Masonry are suited for each other. The officers create opportunities for continuing the line of ancient wisdom, knowledge, and traditions that are the essence of Masonry. J.W. Will Wilkinson as well as his Kitchen Crew have assumed control of our food prep/ meals and have invested long hours putting quality food on our plates when we come together. Our spouses and loved ones have often seen us leave for lodge, practice, events, etc. when they could have used a bit more of us around the home or sharing in the day to day responsibilities of life. We should acknowledge what they give even as they may be at home while we are at lodge for they chose us to be a part of their lives and often we must take back some of ourselves from them to give to the Craft. But we hope that in doing so, we make the world a better place and ourselves better men from which those same loved ones will derive a better quality of life. Our youth groups continue to flourish and offer promise for the next generation as its potential leaders infused with Masonic values, respect, and character. Their support is vital for it ensures that we always look forward to a new dawn and a never-ending supply of Springs. A special appreciation must also be shown to brothers like Joaquin who has taken it upon himself to minister to our enhancement of Masonic Knowledge through the education classes that he leads. And finally, although there are others who will be thanked at their special time, appreciation must be given to our new brethren for honoring us in return with their fellowship and commitment. They are tomorrow s foundation of the Lodge that we all come to with love and fraternity today. They are the future Past Masters, Education Leaders, officers, Masons of the Year, and preservers of our traditions. Thank you all for all that you do. Your gifts are not unnoticed and your fraternity is what brings us all together over the weeks, months, years, and centuries. -Sincerely, Nick Andress, Senior Warden Brethren, From The South It is time again to celebrate one of Masonry s favorite traditions: eating together. In March we enjoyed tasty treats at degrees, practices and Masonic education. The March Fellowship breakfast was friendly and fun. Brother Gene Wickey brought his special blended white and yellow grits that were a hit as always. Your Senior and Junior Stewards, Drew Guzman and Nick Posuniak and MW PGM Jim Wadley cooked your March breakfasts. The Tucson Lodge No. 4 officers with be out of town in Casa Grande April 1, 2 and 3 for a Grand Lodge of Arizona Office Training Program. Therefore, no one will be readily available to cook for a Fellowship Breakfast on April 2 nd and it has been cancelled for April only. Ginny helped us all again for the March stuffed chicken breast, rice pilaf, roasted asparagus with mixed salad and French bread. Coffee followed with a wonderful special dessert prepared by Ginny Fortson almond, pear, cream cheese tarts. The Job s Daughters led by Shari Schmidt were super servers for the evening. Special thanks go out to Gert White, Ginny Fortson and Laurie for slicing and pounding the chicken breasts flat for 3 hours on Tuesday so they would be ready to stuff and roll up on Wednesday morning. Thanks again also to Ellie Hall, Shari Schmidt, Tracy Posuniak, Chris Ahern and Laurie for their kitchen and meal help for stated meeting in March at the lodge. Gratitude and personal happiness research shows it helps all of us to be thankful and show gratitude to others. Research in this area has shown explicitly that being grateful and verbally expressing it to persons who deserve gratitude improves your own health and increases your own sense of well being after you complete the process by expressing it. Please let our volunteer cooks, helpers and servers know you are grateful for what they do. It rewards them and helps you too in the process. Work is love made visible. -- Kahlil Gibran On March 9, our Past Masters dinner included rib eye steaks, salad, ranch beans, baked potatoes, roasted asparagus and cherry pie, apple pie or nut brownies with vanilla ice cream for dessert. The meal was followed by another perfect, past master performance art ritual degree conferral by the masterful, experienced thespians at beginning at 7 pm. The Past Masters exemplified another exemplary first degree with only Masons present. We enjoyed roasted Greek lamb at the lodge potluck dinner on March 23 and other good food from our lodge members. The April stated meeting dinner will be on April 6, 2016, at 6:00 p.m. We will serve mixed salad, spiral sliced ham, a vegetable side dish and white rolls. Coffee will follow with a surprise dessert. Dinner is served at 6:00 pm followed by the April stated meeting at 7 pm sharp. Please join us for fun and fellowship. It is a pleasure serving this year as your Junior Warden. Thank you all very much! -William Wilkinson, Esq, Junior Warden
