Jackson-Union County Habitat for Humanity P.O. Box 1064 Carbondale, IL Message from our President, Jamie Perryman Once again, Jackson-Union County Habitat for Humanity is at it and is making great progress on the latest project at 608 W. Rigdon St. in Carbondale. We are all thrilled as we watch our volunteers transform this once vacant lot into what will be a beautiful home for Josefina and Pedro s family for years to come. Not only is this going to provide a family the opportunity to accomplish their dream of owning a home, but it also provides growth within our community. On Wednesday, June 24 we invite you to join us at Lone Star Steakhouse from 4:30pm to 9:00pm for our Dine and Donate fundraiser. After the success last year, Lone Star was happy to have us back and contribute 15% of their profits for that night to our affiliate. So come enjoy a great meal with your family and help raise funds for a wonderful cause. Also, stay up to date with future events by checking our website and Like us on Facebook. Please join us Summer 2015: 608 W. Rigdon Carbondale Saturday Mornings 8-Noon No Special Skills Required! Looking forward we have set our sights on Murphysboro for next year s home. The family and site have been selected, so we are looking forward to continuing our efforts. More details will be available in our next newsletter. I m unable to express how thankful we are for the support that we receive from the people and businesses in our community. Without this assistance, our organization would not be able to give these families the chance to realize that their dreams can become reality. If you and your organization or business would like to learn more about Jackson-Union County Habitat for Humanity, please don t hesitate to contact me by phone at (618) or by at jperryman@juhabitat.net. I would love the opportunity to come speak with you about our affiliate, and how we can work together to provide affordable housing to deserving families. Lastly, I would like to thank Lee Bracket for his years of service as President of our ministry. Lee has been instrumental in the success of Habitat for Humanity, and we wish him all the best in the future. I will have my work cut out for me attempting to fill his shoes. Warmest Regards, Jamie A. Perryman Jackson/Union County Habitat Board President Special thanks to Heartland Office, Inc., Authorized Xerox Sales Agent (618) for donating color copy services Summer 2015, page 1
I t was a chilly but beautiful day in November as Jackson & Union County Habitat for Humanity hosted the Dedication of the Tracey Neeley Home at 416 East Oak Street in Carbondale. Tracey and her two sons, Mason and Marquis, assisted in building the home with the help of countless volunteers throughout the past year. The 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house comes with a washer and dryer, refrigerator, stove, and dishwasher, central air, a newly constructed privacy fence, and an outdoor shed. Jerry Hickam presents Tracey with the keys to her new home in Carbondale. Mason and Marquis pose in front of their bedroom doors in their new house. D uring the dedication ceremony, we also celebrated with Mary Lyes who made her final mortgage payment to Jackson & Union County Habitat for Humanity in October, Mary Lyes celebrates with the shredding of her mortgage contract! PAID IN FULL! We would like to thank the following businesses and groups that sponsored weekends for this Build: Carbondale Lions Club, JC Penney of Carbondale, Best Buy of Carbondale, the Saluki Summer Bridge Program, Carbondale Chamber of Commerce, Beta Theta Pi Fraternity, SIU Air Force ROTC, SIU Law School s Women of Diversity, Beta Delta Chi Fraternity, Sigma Lambda Fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and, especially, Lowes of Carbondale who sponsored five weekends. Summer 2015, page 2
n-site volunteers are already familiar with Josefina and Pedro because they helped build the O Neeley house last year. This year it s their turn. After living in Carbondale for twelve years, and working with Habitat for two, husband and wife Pedro Infante and Josefina Abarca are now building their own future. As the selected homeowners for Jackson county in 2015, Josefina and Pedro completed an application proving their eligibility, and had to commit to donating over 300 hours in sweat equity in the house building process. We really appreciate all of the people that come over here and we appreciate that Habitat picked us to be the new homeowners, says Pedro. According to Josefina, hearing they were picked last fall was a big dream for us, and owning their own home was a lifelong goal. Pedro, hard at work Building a house in a matter of months using primarily volunteer effort is an impressive feat, and one that has great benefits for future homeowners putting in the sweat equity during build days. It s amazing, because you get to see how it s done, the way it s done, who it s done by! says Pedro, Any other way, you don t know who did it, or what they did. Left to right: Mary Lyes, Tracey Neeley, Josefina, and Pedro at the Neeley Home Dedication, November 15, Pedro and Josefina s House in April, The home will also be for Pedro and Josefina s three daughters, aged 14, 10, and 8. When she s not hammering, sawing, or otherwise constructing her future home, Josefina walks through the space, figuring out the details of who gets which bedroom, and what fixtures to use. The home, Pedro says, is basically for my kids they have to have their own room, their own space their own bathroom! For Pedro and Josefina, the Habitat home is a symbol for their children. I m trying to show my kids you can do it, says Pedro. Any commitment you have in life, you can do it. Summer 2015, page 3

This year s DeLyte Morris Award winner is Ryan Ceresola, a Sociology Graduate Student from SIU who has been volunteering with Habitat for the past two builds. The DeLyte Morris Award is annually given to one student organization and one student through the Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism at SIU. It honors excellence in and commitment to community service, and is in remembrance of the late university president DeLyte Morris, who believed service to be a foundation of higher education. Ryan is entering into his fifth year in the Sociology graduate program at SIU. In addition to helping out on build days and serving on Habitat s board (and building this newsletter!), he studies civic life, volunteerism, and political corruption. Summer 2015, page 4 Left to right: Ryan, Mythili Rundblad the Director of the CSLV, Caitlin Stoskopf Ryan s wife.
We are particularly thankful to SIU students involved with the SIU Architecture Program and Campus Habitat Group and students who found us through the Saluki Volunteer Corp. In past years, we have listed the volunteers and who came out and helped and highlighted those who came most frequently. This year, that list would run on for pages! But, we would like to name some of the people who came often. Some were here a lot last spring and then graduated or got jobs. Others joined us later in the game but have returned numerous times. We have come to rely upon many of you and hope you return to work with us in the fall. Thanks to our previous homeowner, Tracey Neeley, and our future homeowners, Josefina Abarca and Pedro Infante for your help. And thank you to these young people for showing up consistently and organizing others to come as well: Christopher Borges, David Schau, Kegan Witham, Stephen Lauer, Laoro Bueno, Juan Corral, Curtis Brown, Andy Lawrence, Nick Guetterman, Emmalie Hall-Skank, and Ryan Ceresola. Of course, we need to recognize our regulars and old stand-bys: Susan and Mike Adorjan, Jim Dooley, Dan Stearns, Jim Nesler, Darryl Tipton, Barb Rester, Chris Lennon, Jerry Hickam, Bruce Davis and our fearless leaders, Bob Laczynski and David Koster. Your collective experience, whether it s with tools or just knowing the process, is invaluable. 6 Here at Habitat, we believe in building homes in partnership with a family. At the completion of construction, and satisfaction of partner requirements, the family purchases the home by borrowing money from Habitat. Habitat holds the mortgage. The loan is paid off over some 15 to 22 years at no interest. There is a monthly mortgage payment consisting of principal (repaying the loan), taxes (real estate), and insurance (homeowners). The estimated current cost of a Habitat home (in 2015) is approximately $72,500 - $75,000. This means that the Partner Family should have a take-home income of $27,500 to $32,500 per year in order to afford the monthly mortgage payment. If you, or anyone you know, is interested in being a partner family, here is what we look for: The family has gainful employment. The family has roots in the community. The family currently lives in modest or substandard living conditions. The family ordinarily would not qualify for home ownership through normal credit institutions. The family is willing to partner with us by working sweat equity hours. The family commits to making regular mortgage payments until the mortgage is paid off. Thank you for Supporting Partnerships for Affordable Homes, Inc. (Jackson Union County Habitat for Humanity) Enclosed please find a donation in the amount of: $10.00 $25.00 $50.00 $ $ Other I have a building lot I wish to donate: Make checks payable to: Jackson-Union County Habitat For Humanity P.O.
