1 DHBC Continues Serving in Guatemala From Chuck Warren, on Behalf of the 2013 Mission Team The 2013 DHBC Guatemala mission trip, which ended several days ago, was yet again another successful expression of God s love. Thanks to your prayers and support, a group of ten of us was able to return to our two ministry sites in Guatemala to reconnect and continue our service there. Though we will be sharing our experiences at a church service sometime this month, here also is a brief overview of the trip and some highlights. One part of the DHBC mission team worked at Vida y Esperanza, (Life and Hope) a Christian school supported by Mission Impact. The work at this coed school, which has 321 students, was as it has been in past years mostly construction. The big project was building a concrete platform in the courtyard to be used for music and other special events. Team members sifted sand, mixed concrete by hand and hauled buckets of wet concrete. Midway through the week the team went with Herman, the delightful construction foreman at Vida y Esperanza to a remote and very poor village to deliver a Bible lesson for the local children. Heerman, who has eight children of his own, has created a Christian kid s club in that village. After the Bible lesson, the team distributed crayons and a picture depicting the Bible story to the children and then enjoyed some cookies with them. An interesting side project for the Vida y Esparanza team was building concrete stoves to be sold at a low cost to local families. Many Guatemalans cook with an open fire, which tends to fill their homes with smoke frequently causing them to suffer from respiratory and eye problems. The concrete stoves that the Mission Impact team has designed are fuel-efficient and have metal tops with cut out burners, which help to contain the smoke and heat. An exhaust vent carries the smoke to the outdoors. In the future, Mission Impact plans to go to the homes of needy people and make the stoves on site with them. 3 The Builder 3 Heating and AC Fundraiser Update! The fund raising program to raise the necessary funds to cover the cost of purchasing and installing a new and more efficient HVAC "split system" in the social hall and kitchen is progressing very well!! So far, $10,000 of the needed $12,000 has been donated and we are very close to moving forward with purchasing the units to provide heating and cooling in those areas. Jim O Connell who is heading up the campaign says, To those that have waited until the push us over the top point, the time is now! Let s beat the $12,000 mark! As these new split system units provide heating and cooling they will remove that load from the central system and reduce the overall heating and AC costs for DHBC. Good news from Daniel Stallings - DHBC s Second Sunday Conversations will return next month on September 8 th and continue through December. Second Sunday Conversations is part Bible Study, part Social Action Group, and part Dinner Club. Its intent is to bring people of faith together over a shared topic of intrigue. Our first meeting will be at Manuel's at 5:30pm. Daniel is still finalizing the schedule but it looks like the first speaker will be Dr. Emiko Soltis who will present "Social Movement 101." Childcare will be provided at the church. Donations Needed for ICM Clothing Closet A year ago this month we were working to prepare the old Common Ground area at DHBC to serve as a sorting and service area for the new Intown Collaborative Ministries (ICM) clothing closet. Good news! Our efforts and the work of our fellow church partners in the ICM have paid off as the clothing closet has helped many of our homeless neighbors who need clothes for job interviews and work. In fact, about 20 people are currently served each Monday! With the change of the season coming on, this is a great time for all of us to take inventory of our clothes and donate what we can to replenish the clothing available for our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Let s make August the month we at DHBC make a difference in this clothing need. 6 (Continued from page 1) DHBC Continues Serving in Guatemala and other activities including a very fun puppet show about the food chain that we put on for multiple classes. On two occasions, we walked through the village with one or more of the school staff to visit several girls in their homes. One girl whose father was murdered two years ago while we were there had just lost the second uncle in two years. During our visit to her home to express our concern and pray for the family, she and her mother were very upset and it was a heartbreaking experience. We visited a second student who recently had a hernia that she had had for two years repaired by a visiting surgeon from Spain. The student is restricted to bed rest for now and will need a second corrective procedure at some point in the future. This family was slightly better off that many rural Guatemalans in that the walls of their small house were made of tin rather than dried corns stalks bound together. The mother graciously demonstrated for us how Guatemalan women use small looms to weave beautiful products by hand but with tin on all sides of the house; it was so hot in there that several of us nearly passed out. We also screened the girls at Proximos Pasos for vision problems while we were there, gave five of them reading glasses we had taken with us and identified nine other girls that need to see an ophthalmologist for eye problems or distant vision limitations. Our Mission Impact partners will soon be arranging to take the girls down from the village to the city of Antigua where those services are available. We also performed visual screening for other adults and children in the village and were able to provide some folks with glasses. There is a lot of dirt and dust in the air down there that cause many people to have longstanding irritations of the eyes. We plan to take eye drops with us when we go back! After a week of work, on the last full day the team made a three hour trip to Lake Atitlan, a beautiful and remote lake surrounded by mountains and three volcanoes it was incredible! The team returned to Atlanta on a Sunday afternoon flight somewhat tired and very thankful for the opportunity to serve in such a special way. Thanks again to all of you!
