Herbie s Café is Closed Until January 2015 Be sure to join us on Thursday mornings in January for breakfast and a new study called YOU LL GET THROUGH THIS, a study written by Max Lucado. You fear you won't make it through. We all do. We fear that the depression will never lift, the yelling will never stop, the pain will never leave. In the pits, surrounded by steep walls and aching reminders, we wonder: Will this gray sky ever brighten? This load ever lighten? In" "this small group Bible study, pastor and "New York Times"" "best-selling author, Max Lucado offers refreshing assurance. Max reminds participants God doesn't promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless. It wasn't for Joseph--tossed in a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten and dismissed. But his Old Testament story is in the Bible for this reason: to teach us to trust God to trump evil. With the compassion of a pastor, the heart of a storyteller, and the joy of one who has seen what God can do, Max explores the story of Joseph and the truth of Genesis 50:20. Come join us for breakfast & this study starting in January Senior Corner Are you aware help is available at our Aging & Disability Resource Center located at 300 S. Adams St? If you are looking for help with meals, housekeeping, bathing, dementia care, yard work, transportation, housing options, money matters, call them at More information and copies of their monthly newsletter will be on the narthex counter. This is Paul Kacynski checking in from Bratislava, Slovakia. I recently received a gift from the seminarian fund and am overjoyed to be blessed with a congregation that has supported me for so many years! Thank you so much! In case you haven't heard, I am currently the intern pastor at Bratislava International Church. So far I have been hard at work teaching a religion class called A Christian Witness to Faith to high school students in addition to my responsibilities at church where I preach, lead Bible study, help with worship on Sundays, and pretty much do all the things a typical church pastor would do. I also preach once a month at the weekly high school chapel where I teach. God has blessed me with a great supervisor and community here in Bratislava and I am already growing into my call to ordained ministry in ways I would never have imagined! Thanks again for all your love and support! In Christ,-- Paul Kacynski Large Print Bulletins are available each Sunday from the ushers.

We talk as though we know what grace means. But do we really understand it? Have we settled for wimpy grace? It politely occupies a phrase in a hymn, fits nicely on a church sign. Never causes trouble or demands a response. When asked, Do you believe in grace? who could say no? Max asks a deeper question: Have you been changed by grace? Shaped by grace? Strengthened by grace? Emboldened by grace? Softened by grace? Grace is the voice that calls us to change and then gives us the power to pull it off. Join us in January on the first & third Tuesday mornings at 9:30 a.m. as we begin this new study. Invite a friend to join us! Please Remember our Donation Cabinets in the Narthex PREBLE HIVE- school supplies, hygiene products & clothing PAUL S PANTRY- egg cartons, twist ties, paper & plastic bags FREEDOM HOUSE-aluminum foil, kitchen bags, shampoo/conditioner and toothpaste

9 Servants Needed Living Generously Stewardship Moments You are encouraged to continue to prayerfully consider how you will use the gifts and talents God has given you in ministry. Every Sunday during the months of October and November different committee leaders have been inviting you to join them in their specific area of ministry they are responsible for (those areas of ministry are: Leadership, Property, Worship & Music, Mission & Social Concerns, Management, Personnel & Stewardship, Education, Women s Group, Fellowship, Outreach & Evangelism and Youth & Family). You will find on the Generosity Table outside the Sanctuary handouts related to each of these areas of ministry that I encourage you to fill out and place in the basket or offering plate as your response to God s generosity towards you. Thank you to those that have already filled out their areas of ministry. Watch your mail! You will receive a letter along with your 2015 Commitment Card from Pastor in the next week. You are encouraged to begin prayerfully considering your financial commitment for These Commitment Cards will be collected during worship the first two Sundays of December! A letter from Pastor Jim: Greetings to you in the name of Jesus Christ, who generously blesses us every day of our lives.below you will find information about gatherings that will be taking place in January. These gatherings pertain to continuing the process of dreaming and developing a vision for the mission and ministry of Atonement into the future. Your input is very important as we continue this process. It is very important that we fill the Leadership Positions that are open on Church Council for next year. You can serve on Council for either two or three years. Please give this your prayerful consideration as we are in need of filling a number of positions for 2015 and beyond. Thank you to everyone who has stepped forward to help with the day-to-day ministry responsibilities at Atonement while I am recovering from surgery. I appreciate your willingness to serve and your continued prayers. Living Generously into the Future Dreaming into the next five years at Atonement Lutheran Church What follows are some of the comments and ideas that have surfaced so far from the two gatherings that took place in October. Remember these are only dreams and visions of what people think God is calling us to be about in the near future. There will be the opportunity for additional conversation about these visions and dreams during the month of January. The purpose of these gatherings are to begin the process working through the different ideas that have surfaced to date as well as to be open to any further ideas for the future. 1. Building & Improvements for the next 5 years. Roofs, storage building, drainage concerns, landscaping and upkeep of landscaping, exit doors, windows in parish hall, kitchen (size, location, appliances), furnaces & air conditioners, air conditioning part of church that is not air conditioned, parking lot, exterior lighting, organ, piano, space utilization, interior remodeling and relocating of space for program needs in the future, scheduling of activities with greater efficiency for the utilization of the space we have, solar panels, remodeling of parish hall, playground (shared ownership and partnership with neighborhood, like Preble), pavilion for the purpose of outdoor worship services and picnic possibilities as well as program opportunities for neighborhood usage, lighting (interior and exterior), electronic signage.

10 2. Environmentally Green and Technology: Further development of internet web site, Facebook, Twitter, office software and other new technology so less paper will be utilized, projection system for worship in the sanctuary, updating of our lights so they are more current with environmental trends, Geothermal heating & air conditioning system, updating of all furnaces and air conditioners for better efficiency, updating of all thermostats with the possibility of linking them towards computer controlled, improving water utilization such as environmentally friendly toilets, faucets, etc., having an energy scan done by a local utility so we can see where we are losing energy and can then address those areas. 3. Staffing: continue to work towards the development of the Youth & Family ministry model, look at the sharing of staff with other congregations on the East side, like Christ Community, consider the trends that are taking place over the last 5 years in regards to the ethnic makeup of the neighborhoods we serve and what the means for the skills needed with future staff, continue to consider how to manage long care and janitorial upkeep of our facility inside and outside as programs and usage continues to grow, consider the possibility of staffing for daycare (this would impact the further development of programs and there would be some facility areas that would need to be addressed), consider staffing with the possibility of the establishment of a coffee house type ministry where people in the neighborhood like staff at Preble, staff at the Red Cross and others who live in the neighborhood could stop in for a cup of coffee, pastry, fruit, go on-line, fellowship, etc.(this would also impact the need for further program development and facility changes), consider further conversation with child care services and the development of a playgroup at Atonement, further development of volunteer services through a volunteer coordinator. 4. Programs: Bell Choir, Wednesday night family programming, FFL, Senior programming, bible studies, small Group ministries, SPLASH, Gods Work Our Hands, servant ministry possibilities, further development of our bilingual ministry, confirmation and Sunday School updating, consider the utilization of Faith, Inc. material as a resource for parents for Sunday School and for Confirmation, continued retooling of United 2 Serve and what that can mean for the further development of mission and ministry possibilities, further development of the utilization of advertising in our local media activities that are taking place in our community (with the purpose of being more visible and accessible to people outside of the church). 5. Relationship with other Churches: Continue conversations with Christ Community in regards to shared mission and ministry, further development of our relationship with Preble High School, example, the possibility of Preble students designing, building and installing updated playground equipment for the Community Playground here at Atonement. 6. Finances: the further development of our trust fund and what that could mean for the expansion of mission possibilities and the church and in the community, further educating members about estate planning and how this is an important part of how to be a steward of what God has blessed us with when we are no longer here, further development of electronic giving, further education about tithing/proportionate giving so that we understand what God is calling us to do with our financial resources. So as you can see, a number of ideas have begun to surface about the future mission and ministry here at Atonement Lutheran Church. I look forward to further conversations about these and other ideas that you may have about our ministry together. Remember, at this point these are only possibilities for our prayerful consideration. Watch for more details on the times for us to continue this discussion in January. It is my hope that a report will be ready for the annual meeting on January 25 of This report will basically be the completion of the gathering of people s ideas and visions for our future ministry. Those ideas will then be taken by a five year planning team and narrowed down and prioritized. If you are interested in serving on that planning team, please communicate that to Pastor Jim or a member of the Church Council. Let s continue to dream and pray about our future. In Christ, Pastor Jim Gerth

Corina Gerczak, Marilyn Rabideau, Dave Robishaw, Craig Schneider, and Sharon Schneider worked the sale. Sharon applied to Thrivent for their Action Plan grant. It was approved for $250, we had funds to purchase all of the food for the supply. We hoped to sell 200 hotdogs, but due to the first snow storm of the year, the sale was not very successful. All the workers chipped in to buy the supplies that were not utilized. We were able to cover the cost of expenses with a little extra. All in all we took in $291 and with the extra value in the account we established for the Hive, we recommend that Julie should send a check to the Hive for $375. We have $12 remaining on the card that Thrivent sent, so we will spend it at the Dollar store for hygiene products for the Hive. We hope to be able to distribute $350 this month, with $150 going to the Media Fund, $100 to the Youth Gathering Fund for the summer trip to Detroit, and $100 for Atonement s Mission trip to Sault Ste. Marie, summer of Wentworths organized the shelter meal for the Month of November. They served 200 meals, including second servings. Thank you to everyone who helped make the meal possible, including all those who worked in the kitchen prior to delivering all of the food to the shelter. It was recommended that we put out an industrial sized can to demonstrate what people are signing up for when they bring fruit for the meal. Donna Aznoe requested $50 to purchase food for the Preble House as a Christmas gift. We will table this discussion until next month when it gets closer to Christmas. This report is respectfully submitted by, Sharon Schneider Program Leader
