Jason Helgeson President Corey Kirch Vice President Lora Vandevoorde Secretary Paul Sager Tori Wheelock Tim Wentworth Joellyn Kacynski Janet Jacobson Gene Vandevoorde Kevin Nesslein Julie Geyer Treasurer/Non-voting member Atonement Lutheran Church Church Council Meeting Minutes Thursday, August 23, 2018 In attendance: Jason Helgeson President, Corey Kirch Vice President, Lora Vandevoorde Secretary, Julie Geyer Treasurer, Gene Vandevoorde, Tori Wheelock, Janet Jacobson, Paul Sager, Pastor David Raben Excused: Tim Wentworth, Joellyn Kacynski, Kevin Nesslein Jason called the meeting called to order at 6:30pm. Pastor David began with a bible study. Approval of June 21, 2018 minutes: Gene motioned to approve. Corey seconded. Motion carried. Committee reports were sent electronically to the council. The following items were discussed: Christian Ed/VBS VBS was a successful week. Sunday School starting September 9. Youth & Family There s an outstanding balance to be paid for the Youth Gathering trip. Youth team will discuss more fundraising efforts. Properties Budget is overspent due to unexpected costs: sewer system problems, mulching, and fixing doors. Interior signs to be created using a design from Dan Rabideau. Worship & Music Donations of food items were brought to Manna for Life. A rep from Manna for Life will do a Temple Talk on a Sunday during the Fall. A Big Thank You to Mary Jo who sorted

12 through the paraments and looked into new ones we can purchase. Gladys will talk to families with small memorials to purchase these. Liturgy will change in September. MPS Considered how to handle stock donations. In the past, they were converted to cash right away. Procedure has changed to leave the stock in an investment and MPS will decide when to sell. Because CD interest rates are higher than money market rates, some of the money market funds were invested in CDs that mature at various times. If we need the cash, MPS will choose to cash in a CD when it matures. United 2 Serve Distributions requested are: $200 for Shelter Meal, $200 for UWGB Campus Cupboard, $200 for 2019 Mission Trip, $200 for Preble Hive, and $25 for the Preble Park Association. Jason made a motion to approve all the distributions with the exception of the Shelter Meal distribution (funds received have been designated for this program already). Corey seconded. Motion carried. NOTE: it was confirmed later that the $200 distribution for shelter meal was not a requested distribution; U2S is taking the $200 from the existing N.E.W. Shelter account that has a current balance of about $1,200. Pastor s Report Pastor David discussed a book he and Jason are reading titled Canoeing the Mountains: Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory by Tod Bolsinger. The church has to be creative to keep up with culture changes and grow membership, and this book could inspire us. He is starting a Transformation Team that will read the book and have some meaningful discussions about new ideas to engage members and nonmembers. See Pastor David if you want to join the group. Paul made a motion to approve Pastor s report. Gene seconded. Motion carried. Treasurer s Report Julie reviewed the treasurer s report for July. Year-to-date numbers show we are right on target for revenue and expenses are under budget, which is great for summer. Jason made a motion to approve Julie s report. Tori seconded. Motion carried. Old Business 1. Parish Hall Updates: Corey is working on options. Considering a projector instead of a large TV. For sound, a home stereo system should be sufficient. A suggestion was made to add background music during fellowship on Sundays. New Business 1. Nursery discussion: On most Sundays, there are no nursery attendants. Discussed ideas to get volunteers or create other options for parents. Will talk to young families or other people about options. 2. Preble Parking: Discussed parking during Preble sporting events, if people have problems with paying. No one has had major issues when collecting parking money. May adjust the signage to make it clear the money benefits Atonement Youth. 3. MPS Proposed Structure: MPS currently includes management of the finances, budgets, personnel and stewardship activities. The committee wants to create sub-committees for Personnel and Stewardship. Personnel group could do a lot more to support our staff. Stewardship group could be focused on this year-round rather than just one time a year. Personnel group and Stewardship group will report to MPS team. MPS may meet less often going forward. Corey made a motion to support the two sub-committee proposed structure for MPS committee, seconded by Paul. Motion passed. 4. Church Office Hours: Lori is looking to accept a second job. This would require a change in her hours at Atonement (office hours). Office hours will be: Mondays 12-6pm; Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 8am-2pm; Fridays Closed. MPS and Council agreed to accommodate this request to change the office hours. Gene ended the meeting with a devotional reading. Meeting adjourned at 7:56pm. Next Meeting is scheduled for September 20, 2018.
