1 Pentecost September 2012 TRINITY NEWS Trinity Episcopal Church 1200 Main Street Fishkill NY The Five Marks of Mission So often we talk about the mission of the Church, yet we find it difficult to articulate our mission. In very basic terms, mission is living out the love of God in our world today. As Christians we become the visible sign of God s love. Archbishop Desmond Tutu says that: Mission is really making us all aware of the incredible love that God has for all of us. It says things like: you don t have to earn God s love. God loves you, period. Everything flows from there. Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori noted in the May 19 webcast that mission is about receiving love and then responding by going out and sharing. It is a matter of calling the near and the far off together into the fold. It is about healing and reconciling. It is about making that love incarnate in the lives of people around us and in the lives of people on the other end of the earth. The world wide Anglican Consultative Council developed the Five Marks of Mission which have been adopted by the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 2009 and have informed the work of the church since then. The Five Marks of Mission are: To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom To teach, baptize and nurture new believers To respond to human need by loving service To seek to transform unjust structures of society To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth In a succinct way, the Five Marks of Mission offer a framework for mission and ministry work. For many, the work of the Five Marks is already part of a congregational or personal mission program. Whether it s when you recycle (Mark #5), undertake social justice work (Mark #4), donate to a food bank, volunteer at a soup kitchen (Mark #3), renew your baptismal vows (Marks #1 and #2), or countless other ways, the Five Marks of Mission shine through. On September 9 th we will focus on Mission. The Rev. William Parnell, Archdeacon for Mission in the Diocese of New York will preach at the 8AM and 10AM services. He will also make a presentation at the pot luck luncheon following the 10AM service. Come and explore your mission and join with each other in nurturing the mission of Trinity Church, Fishkill Reverend Jean Campbell
2 Page 2 Trinity News Our Ministry of Music MUSIC NOTES As we begin a new school year the choir reconvenes on Sept. 6 th. We are always looking for more singers, so if you have ever wanted to give it a try, please speak to me or just show up for rehearsal on a Thursday at 7 p.m. (Not on Sept. 23 0r 30 when I am away.) We have 12 singers at this time and 7 of them are men. It s the only choir I ve ever worked with that has fewer women than men! Where are all the women who like to sing? We need you! Over the summer months we once again had great variety in the musicians who shared their talents with us at our Sunday services. We had several vocalists: Diane Kessler and Wayne Bunker plus a chamber choir one Sunday which turned out to be most of the choir. Representing the woodwinds Chris Huston played clarinet. James Dotter was our only string player when he gave an offering on classical guitar. We had several pianists: Simon Douglas, Lucas Douglas and Laura Casaregola. In addition to playing a solo one Sunday, Laura took over and played the entire service for me on a Sunday when I was away. I have heard outstanding reports of the stellar job she did. Kudos to Laura! Our brass players also deserve mention: Campbell Whitford, Dave and Nate Hilscher and Hance Huston. The last three played a trio of Nearer My God to Thee that was arranged by David Hilscher. We have lots of musical talent in the congregation! So don t hide your talent under a bushel. Bring it out into the light and join us. We have a lot of fun as we prepare to sing each Sunday. In all we do we strive to bring glory to God through our music making. Beverly Simmons Minister of Music
