Pentecost July/August 2012 TRINITY NEWS Trinity Episcopal Church 1200 Main Street Fishkill NY The General Convention July 5, 2012 through July 12, 2012, The General Convention will be meeting in Indianapolis, IN. The General Convention is the governing body of the Episcopal Church. The Convention is a bicameral legislature that includes the House of Deputies, which is made up of 4 lay deputies and 4 clerical deputies, and has more than 800 members, and the House of Bishops, which is comprised of nearly 300 active and retired bishops. The Convention meets every three years and has the authority to amend the Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church; adopt the budget for the church for the next three years; authorize liturgical texts and amend the Book of Common Prayer; adopt communions and covenants with other churches; set qualifications for orders of ministry and office-holders; elect officers of the General Convention, the Executive Council, and members of boards; and delegate responsibilities to the committees, commissions, agencies, and boards of the Episcopal Church. Two issues coming before Convention will generate media attention. The first concerns legislation which affirms our continued participation and dialogue with the world wide Anglican Communion, but also recommends that the Church in the U.S. join with the churches of Wales, Scotland, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and others in rejecting what is known as the Anglican Covenant. This covenant proposes to give greater authority to Anglican Primates (heads of national churches) and provides a mechanism to vote member churches out of the Communion. The other legislation comes from the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music. In their report to the Convention, they provided an extensive study of same-sex-blessings which they were asked to do by the 2009 General Convention. They have also produced a document for study entitled I will bless you and you will be a blessing outlining the 40 year history of dialogue in the Episcopal Church on homosexuality, and providing theological and pastoral issues surrounding same-sex blessings. A liturgy for blessing same-sex unions is included along with extensive study materials to be used in parish and diocesan settings. You can read the reports and legislation being presented to the General Convention at generalconvention.org. Click on to the pdf file for the Blue Book. There is a wealth of information in the Blue Book on the church s stand on health care, the environment, international peace initiatives, antiracism, etc. I have to warn you, it is a document well over 1000 pages and I would suggest you begin in the index at the end of the document. You should also remember that this is proposed legislation which will be amended in committees, some will be buried, and others will be refined and presented to the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies for approval or rejection. Legislation has to be passed by both houses to become operational in the life of the church. The Episcopal News Service also provides daily postings on the working of convention. You can access material at episcopaldigitalnetwork.com. Also the episcopalcafe.org will have daily conversations on Convention. On July 15, 2012 I will hold a forum after the coffee hour to discuss the outcome of the General Convention. Reverend Jean Campbell

Page 2 Our Ministry of Music MUSIC NOTES Most of you are aware that we sing music on Sunday morning not all of which comes from the Hymnal in the pew. Most weeks we sing a Taizé piece at the end of communion. As I have written before these songs come from a monastery in France and are meant to be repeated over and over as an aid to deeper prayer. There are also two other sources that we use from time to time to expand the possibilities of congregational song. The first is Lift Every Voice and Sing. This is labeled An African American Hymnal. It contains Negro spirituals, Gospel songs, and many missionary and evangelistic hymns. I have decided to follow Jesus is one of the pieces we sing from the book. Other favorites include How great thou art. The second book we use was created as a continuation of the Hymnal and thus starts with #721 since the Hymnal ends with #720. The title of this one is Wonder, Love and Praise. It was created as a response to a resolution passed at our General Convention almost 20 years ago, in As the church changes and moves into the 21 st century it was an attempt to give a lot of variety of musical styles and spirituality. In the Preface it states: We felt strongly that within the charge we had been given was the opportunity to offer a musical table laden with a variety of spiritual food - from appetizer to dessert. We have left the decision about what makes up a well-balanced meal to those who come to the feast. So it is a very eclectic collection with some wonderful gems. Will you come and follow me if I but call your name, Heal me hands of Jesus, Signs of endings all around us are but a few of the ones we have sung. The Gloria by John Rutter which we have printed on blue cards is from this book as is the version of the Christ our Passover that we sing in the Easter season. So music is always evolving and new texts and tunes appear. Some will stand the test of time and some won t. I try to pick ones that I think fit the former category but you can never be sure. So have an open mind, listen to new tunes and then join in the singing. Learn new texts to familiar tunes and above all, be open to what the Spirit may be trying to say to YOU. Have a wonderful summer. Beverly Simmons Minister of Music

We have a good deal of available cash due to the number of families who have prepaid their 2012 pledge. Pay it Forward and E-pledge enrollment appeals will be made to encourage families to keep their pledges current throughout the summer. The 8 and 10 AM Sunday services will be combined into one 9 AM service from July 29th through August 26th. Special breakfast/outdoor coffee hour events are being planned and will be announced when finalized. Minutes from the Vestry meetings can be viewed online at trinityfishkill.org/newsvestry.html. Please feel free to speak with the Wardens or any Vestry member if you would like more information on these or any topics.

Page 4 Graduates Congratulations to Michele Humbert graduating from High School. She will be attending Siena College in the Fall. Congratulations to Samantha Lecker who graduated from Dutchess Community College, Emily Huston graduating from SUNY New Paltz and Erin Sullivan who graduated from Marist College with her MBA. Many blessings on your accomplishments and may God continue to bless you on your journey. Pay it Forward School is out, and summer has begun. If you are making travel plans that may keep you from attending church regularly, please consider paying your pledge in advance to keep you from falling behind. One way to do this is by E-Pledging, a program of automatic monthly deductions from a checking or savings account. E- pledging is a safe and convenient way to keep your pledge up-to-date. E-pledging helps the church maintain a steady cash flow to pay bills during the summer months when many families are away on vacation and attendance at services is lighter. Enrollment forms are available in the Parish House and can also be requested from the office by ing trinityfishkill@verizon.net. Newsletter Articles If you re interested in submitting articles for the newsletter, please do so to carolynsaldana@yahoo.com by the 2nd Sunday of the month. Please be mindful that articles must be consistent with Trinity's mission. Parish House Project We need estimates for replacing the counters in the parish house kitchen and also for painting the walls and cabinets. We plan to have the work done in July. We will get one estimate for the counters from home depot, we need two more. We already have one estimate for the painting, we also need two more. Please contact Mary Kalan if you can recommend persons for either project.marykalan@optonline. net Women s Book Club The Book Club will meet on Wednesday, July 11th at Noon to discuss White Teeth by Zadie Smith. Extra books are available to sign out in the Parish House Library. Bring your lunch and join the discussion. New members are always welcome! Great Strides Walk Thank you to all who donated or walked this year with Great Strides. Our Chapter goal was $165,000 and we raised $ as of the walk on June 3. Our family appreciates all you can do to help fight this disease. Your continued support truly is making Great Strides towards a way to stop the progression of this disease or a cure for it giving us hope that Jordan (now 8) can hopefully live a full life. Thank you again. If you are still interested in making a donation you can send a check to us at 35 Mt Pleasant Dr Poughquag NY 1570 or go directly to my website at The Stofko s Lloyd, Jayme, Jordan and Sklyer

Page 6 Rummage Sale & Bake Sale Just wanted everyone to know all the hard work we put in for one week was worth it, we made $2,743 for the Rummage and $102 for the Food Pantry. Thank you to our bakers, we had a nice variety of baked goods to sell. Thank you to everyone who responded to our call for help. From donating clothing, to all the trash and treasure and other stuff that was donated. And then, we price everything. Anyone with experience in pricing old and new treasures, we need your help. Then comes the FUN Friday Sale Day. Have you seen the line waiting to enter?. It s 8:55 a.m., we all say a prayer and everyone takes their position while one brave soul opens the door. Did I forget to tell you we set-up for three days. And then comes Saturday, bag day, the day everyone pays $2 for a plastic bag. And watch the people stuff and stuff and stuff until the bag is ready to burst. On Saturday we close at 2 p.m. and begin packing. Thanks to everyone who came to help. We need lots and lots of people. Everything that is left over is packed in bags and ready to be picked up on Monday morning. Vassar Haiti Project It is official! The Vassar Haiti Project is now a registered U.S. 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Donations and purchases of artworks at every one of our events are deductible to the full extent allowable under IRS regulations. We received the notice from the U.S. government about a week ago -- they accepted our application in its entirety, without question or reservation. It has been a long road. Thank you for helping us get to this point, for holding our hands along the way, for fanning the flames, for keeping our missions to the artists of Haiti and to the children of Chermaitre alive. It has been a collective effort all the way, and we are so greatly appreciative of the energy, love, and dedication our fellow members of Trinity have shown to this mission every step of the way. Lila & Andrew Meade Mary Kalan deserves a special THANK YOU for always finding somewhere or someone who will take all our left over rummage. Now is the time to mark your calendars for the Winter Rummage Sale & Food Pantry Bake Sale: Friday, October 12, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, October 13, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Plenty of time gather lots and lots of stuff and remember only winter clothing. If you have any questions you may call: Rosemarie Waian , June MacInnes , Mary Kalan
