LIGHT FROM THE EAST W M Ron Glover As I sit typing this I am trying to come to grips with some of the emotions I ve been feeling since being elected as Worshipful Master of Leesburg Lodge. Excitement, Anticipation, Fear & Dread are just a few of the major ones I ve been experiencing. I m looking forward to working with all the officers in the line. I feel we are going to have a good, fun year. We ve got some exciting things planned for this upcoming year and before we start I want to thank all the brothers that agreed to sit in a chair or on a committee. I also want to thank all the Past Masters for their advice and words of encouragement. Your advice and suggestions are always welcomed and appreciated. I ve said it before but I want you to know that I take all criticism to heart and welcome it. It shows you care about Masonry and our Lodge. With that being said, it s always hard for me to put down in words what Masonry means to me. I have wanted to be a Mason for just about as long as I can remember. I can remember my father, uncles, and cousins wearing their rings and talking about matters that despite being way over my head at the time intrigued me as to what they were about. I can remember my father dressing up in his white tux jacket and leaving for the Lodge and wondering what in the world was going on down there. I was hooked at an early age but it wasn t the rings, or the secrets, or the pretty cool white tux jacket that inspired me to be a mason. It was the fact that these men were indeed all good men. Good fathers, brothers, uncles, cousins. Good family men. Men that helped each other, helped friends and family, and helped strangers without expecting anything in return. I knew enough then to know that what they stood for was something right and decent and it was something I wanted to be a part of. I remember, vaguely, being present at the building of the current Lodge building. I can remember going to one of the installations where my father was going into a chair and I don t know if anybody can realize how awe inspiring that lodge building is to a young child. It s hard to imagine that 30 plus years later I m going to be sitting in the East of that very same lodge room. I only say this, Brothers, so you will know the sincerity I have when I say, that it is an honor I cannot put into words that you have elected me to serve our Lodge. I look forward to serving you. Let us start our labors for the year. Let us work and agree. Chaplin s Corner My Brothers, as we start the New Year, let us give thanks to all that have made this past year such a wonderful time in our lives. Let us reflect back on the good times in the past year and what they have meant to our Lodge and our Brothers and ourselves. Let us remember with love and caring those Brothers who passed this last year and keep their families and loved ones in our prayers. This is a time of renewal for everyone, a fresh start and a clean slate. Let us not forget the simple things in life that give us joy and make us who we are. Let us start anew with dedication to our Craft and dedication to the country we love and hold dear. During these trying times let us not think of violence and hate but get back on the right path toward a nation of caring neighbors and helping hands across our land. Brothers, may the Great Architect of the Universe grant you peace and love in the coming year and may he watch over and keep you, your families and loved ones safe from sickness and harm. If you know of any sickness of distress, please let the Lodge know, so we can offer comfort or a call. 3
From the West Bro. Jeff Lamb Looking back over 2014 I feel we had a positive year and I will miss being Senior Deacon. WM John Haas did a fantastic job in keeping our lodge on the right track and hope that he will continue to be an influential member at Leesburg #58. We had a great time together as officers and I enjoyed practicing for the degrees with Brother Haas and the other officers. I believe we put on some of the best degree work in our district though 2014, it's just too bad so few Brothers saw us in action. I would like to congratulate Ron Glover on being elected Worshipful Master for the new year, during our time together he has relayed some of his ideas to me, and I am very excited to assist him in any way I can to make his year a success. It is a true pleasure to know him as a person and I am proud to call him my friend and Brother. I am certain he will do a great job as WM, and wish him all the best throughout this new year. Last of all I would like to thank the Brothers for electing me to Senior Warden, I hope to be humble to the Past Masters, a leader to the new Brothers, and a closer friend to all the members of not only our lodge, but to all the brothers I meet throughout From the Secretary W Hank DeBerry Hello my Brothers! Thank you for once again showing the world you have no idea what you are doing by electing me Secretary again! Just kidding Brothers, I am truly honored by your support and election of me to this high office. I will strive to give you my very best this year and stay on top of all things in the Lodge. We have managed to trim the NPD list down to six names Brothers and I am sorry to say that those six have not responded at all to our attempts at contact. Brothers, please, if you know someone who is in arrears in their dues, have them contact the Lodge. There is no shame in going on the Emeritus List and better that, than losing all your years of Masonic service. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the Brothers that were elected to office in the Lodge. I know they will do their very best for the Lodge and the Brothers in it. Those appointed officers chosen are to be congratulated and thanked for stepping up and helping out. Their help keeps this Lodge running. I know that the Worshipful Master has some very good plans in the works this year and I sincerely hope that all the Brothers will come out and support his efforts. Brothers as this is the start of a new year I would like to ask a large favor of you. Could you please update all your information for our records. I want to make sure that you keep current on the happenings in the Lodge and any new updates from Grand Lodge so that you can be a part of the whole process. A two minute phone call is about all it would take to make this as simple and easy as possible. That way I can update your records with Grand Lodge and our own records in the Lodge office. I don t think this is asking too much Brothers since you are the ones who will benefit from this. I promise you will not receive any unnecessary contact from me or the Lodge office. If you wish you can be placed on the do not call list and it will be entered into your record. Part of the problems we have had in the past getting the dues taken care of, is not having a correct address to send the notice to. Also, not being able to contact by phone or , to find out if the Brother is still able to pay or has passed. This is vital information that we need to know to report to Grand Lodge each year in our End of Year Report to the Grand Secretary. I sincerely thank you all Brothers and want to wish you the Happiest of New Years! 4
Brothers, Thank you for electing me as Junior Warden. Hopefully, I'll surpass all your expectations of the duties of a Junior Warden. I plan on preparing great meals with the brothers who work in the kitchen with me. I have some good recipes for dinners this month and next. There will be no breakfasts served until April because of the way the weekends fall with the first Saturday and the second Sunday occurring in the same weekend. January's dinner is a choice of chicken stuffed with spinach, Ricotta and Provolone cheeses with marinara sauce and spaghetti or homemade meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy. Sides include carrots and green beans and salads. Desserts to follow. Look forward to seeing all my brothers with their wives and guests at the dinner. Thank you, Wayne Reynolds Junior Warden From the South Bro. 11 Stewards they don t really do much, do they? The Lodge Stewards are exactly what their name implies: The flight attendants of the Lodge. They assist Brethren with mobility issues, fetch glasses of water for officers, etc. During times of Refreshment, they serve meals, clean tables, help in the kitchen, etc. Their ceremonial duties in the Lodge include assisting the Junior Deacon in preparing the candidate for degrees and in purging the Lodge. The Junior Steward is seated on the left of the Junior Warden in the South. The Senior Steward, on the right of the Junior Warden in the South. They carry rods and their emblem is the cornucopia, symbolizing plenty for all. During hours of Refreshment, they report to the Junior Warden. During hours of Labor, they report to the Junior Deacon. The logical place to start is to ask, What is a steward? The word, steward, has an interesting etymology. It literally means, sty-ward the manager of the pigsty. Pretty high quality, huh? In the original Anglo-Saxon it is a pig keeper. Later, it was applied to the person who managed the activities in a nobleman s hall. He was the ward, or manager, of that place where the king or a nobleman would welcome guests, hear requests, make judgments, hold feasts, and other sorts of things. He was in charge of making sure that there was plenty of food for everybody, and that the guests were introduced and dismissed at the proper times, and so forth. But over time, a steward s responsibilities expanded to include the management of the entire estate of the nobleman, or other rich men. If he had a business, then a steward would be the chief manager of that business for him. He would supervise servants or employees. Depending on the sort of business that it happened to be, he would collect rents, or payments; he would keep the books; he would order provisions and supplies making sure that the storeroom was kept well stocked. And, he did many other things that the boss either could not do, or did not need to be bothered with. The word manager has replaced this term. We do not use steward very much anymore. We have even dropped the term for the stewards and stewardesses on passenger planes; they are now flight attendants. (Continued on page 12) Comedy Corner While visiting a newly initiated brother at home one day, the new brother s wife took me to one side and said her husband had started behaving very strange since joining. I asked in what way? She said that he locks himself in the toilet for hours on end mumbling to himself with his little blue book. Later that evening I turned the talk to lodge, and asked him how he was getting on. Oh fine was his reply. I asked him about his behavior and if there was anything wrong. No, was his reply. So why read the book there? Well he said "It s the only TYLED room in the house"... A Doctor and Plumber are in the same Lodge. On Sunday Morning the Doctor wakes up to find his toilet blocked. So he rings the Plumber. But I don t work Sundays! Can t it wait until tomorrow. The Doctor said. I don t like working Sundays either but if you were in trouble, and felt unwell, Brother I would come round to see you OK says the Plumber and goes round to the Doctor. Goes upstairs and looks at the toilet, take two aspirins from his pocket and throws them down the bowl. There he says If it s no better tomorrow give me a ring and I will call round. 11
(Continued from page 11) So really, it is a word that just about only has its theological meanings left to it in our everyday life, such as in the parable of the unjust steward. Stewardship, then, is the conducting, supervising, or managing of something. And it usually means, The careful and responsible management of something that has been entrusted into your care. We use is like, The nation is responsible for the stewardship of its natural resources. Or, you have been given a sum of money in trust (a trustee); you would be a steward of that money. The Bible s use of the term steward is very similar to the dictionary definition of the term. The Old Testament uses a phrase that means, One who is over a house, just like Joseph was a steward over the household of Potiphar. Another word is the Hebrew soken, means basically the same thing, but it has a more governmental connotation to it. It is an officer responsible for the king s house. We would probably use the term treasurer, or chamberlain instead of steward, but it is the same idea. He is the chief officer of a royal court. And in Isaiah 22:15, there was Shebna who was called the treasurer of the court, and he was replaced because he was not being responsible. If you remember the book, The Lord of the Rings, there was a city called Minas Tirith that had lost its king, and the stewards who were regents over that city ruled that city-state for hundreds of years. And when the king returned, as faithful stewards should be, they turned the city back over to the king. Other words translated steward in the Bible may specifically mean leader, officer, commander, or overseer. The New Testament only uses two words for this idea. The Greek words epitropos and oikonomos. Epitropos means One to whose care something is committed. Sounds like steward to me. It is translated as steward, guardian, and even tutor. The verb form, epotropae means to turn over to, like a rich man will turn over his estate to his steward while he is gone. It is used in a situation with the apostle Paul, in a negative light, when he was commissioned by the priests in Jerusalem to go to Damascus and put into prison true believers of the way. He was commissioned made a steward of this task, and sent to Damascus to carry it out. This word is also found in Matthew 20:8, Luke 8:3, and Galatians 4:2. They are used generally where so and so is a steward, and that sort of thing. Now, oikonomos literally means House arranger; one who arranges the household. It is also defined as house manager, steward, governor, treasurer, and chamberlain. You probably noticed that all these definitions are very much the same, both in our usage of the word, the Old Testament usage of the word, and the New Testament usage too. It is very clear throughout the whole Bible that a steward is one who manages something entrusted to him by another, more often by a superior who entrusts things to him. He is accountable to guard, maintain, and even enhance what has been entrusted to him. A steward is always under authority of another, and must report his progress to his superior on occasion. A businessman would not expect to have a steward and not be told what is going on. It is part of his duties. He must report his progress to his superior. Let us see how it is used in the Bible, and watch these ideas surface. I Chronicles 28:1 Now David assembled at Jerusalem all the leaders of Israel: the officers of the tribes and the captains of the divisions who served the king, the captains over thousands and captains over hundreds, and the stewards over all the substance and possessions of the king and of his sons, with the officials, the valiant men, and all the mighty men of valor. Now, this is a steward of a different color. These stewards were considered leaders of Israel. They had in their charge all the riches that David possessed, as well as the possessions of his sons. Notice that it is stewards, plural. They needed many money managers to look after all David s family s substance. They were extremely trustworthy men to have all this money in their hands to do with as they would, and as David directed them. And, there is no indication that they fell down on the job, because David was able to lay up an incredible amount of materials gold and silver, precious gems, wood and stone all for building the temple in Jerusalem. These men did a good job. They were worthy of the trust that David put into them. Now, this idea of managing money is the main understanding that the Protestants have of stewardship. And, if you read any of their articles on stewardship, you will find that they mostly key in on stewardship of the (Continued on page 13) 12
(Continued from page 12) ministry over the church s funds. That is good and right, and should be considered. However, even though they seemed to be aware of the more spiritual meanings, not just for the ministry but for the lay members as well, most of their discussions of stewardship seems to end with the using of one s tithes, and church finances. This is not wrong. But it is only the most rudimentary of the applications of the idea of stewardship. It is incomplete. The concepts of khalifa, stewardship, and amana, trust, emerge from the principle of tawhid. The Quran explains that mankind holds a privileged position among God s creations on earth: he is chosen as khalifa, viceregent and carries the responsibility of caring for God s earthly creations. Each individual is given this task and privilege in the form of God s trust. But the Quran repeatedly warns believers against arrogance: they are no better than other creatures. Even the Buddhists believe that we are Stewards of the world, and it is in our care. So as Lodge Stewards we are charged with every care that the lodge and its members may have. This takes us back to the reference of lodge Stewards being the grunts. Let us not forget that they are the backbone of the lodge and without their diligence to their duty the lodge would struggle and fail. The Steward is, in my opinion, one of the most important roles and one of the most overlooked by all Brothers. A good Steward will know that he has done his job, by the lack of complaining by the membership and the lack of recognition that they will receive for a job well done. However, I will say that, the Steward who success will be noticed by the Worshipful Master, and officers, for it would have most likely made his job that much easy, and his year as Master that much more successful. Be proud to be a Steward and be diligent, for the time we spend in the chairs goes quickly and without our knowledge. Remember that it is up to you to help those who come after you and if you did your duty well you will know every part of what it means to be the Lodge Steward.
