1 Minute-By-Minute Minute-By-Minute is the Monthly Newsletter of the North Carolina Association of Municipal Clerks February 2018 Inside this issue: President Hunt s February Message: President s Message 1 Director s Article 4 Called for Such a Time as This Volunteer Application Director s Application 5 8 Greetings, Fellow Clerks, I hope all is well in your workplace.at your home in your life! I realize that 2017 brought with it much happiness, as well as much sadness; many accomplishments, as well as many disappointments nevertheless, we still need to give thanks! Our minds cannot perceive all the good things that are in store for us if we faint not and press forward. We are overcomers, we are Clerks united and working together for a common cause. By the time you read this article, our January Clerks School would have taken place. Thank you, Melody Shuler, Jim Byrd, and the Program and Education Committee for another successful Academy! The IIMC Region 3 Conference is right around the corner. It will be held on February in Greenville, SC at the Hyatt Regency. I hope you have registered and reserved your room. The rooms are really going fast! Although February is the shortest month in a year, it is a month filled with romance, food, and excitement. Super Bowl Lll (52 nd ) is scheduled for February 4, How many of you are football fanatics? Personally, I know very little about football unlike other family members. I did a little research and learned that the top six teams that might have a chance in the Super Bowl Lll are: New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, Los Angeles Rams, and New Orleans Saints. Best wishes to you and your favorite team! Also, February is known as the love month. I agree and disagree with this because I feel every month is a love month. Yes, show love to your loved ones on February 14 th, but show love during the other months as well. True love is a gift to be treasured. Tina Turner asks, what s love got to do with it. She states that love is a second hand emotion. For Tina, this may be true. An acquaintance of mines by the name of Paul describes love in the following manner: Love is patient, Love is kind. It does not envy, It does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others; it is not self seeking, It is not easily angered; it keeps no record of wrongs; Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. LOVE NEVER FAILS. HAPPY VALENTINE S DAY! Continued on Page 2-President s message 1

4 Washington s Historic District Washington s rich history adds to the character of the community. The city was founded in 1776-the same year of our nation s independence. It was the first town in America to have been named for George Washington. Because of Washington s strategic location at the junction of coastal and inland rivers, the town developed as a regional shipping center. Washington also was a federal supply outpost during the Revolutionary War. Washington has rebuilt after devastating fires destroyed all but a few of the city s antebellum structures. The construction that followed the second major fire in 1900 (the first burning was during the Civil War) produced a concentration of Victorian era homes and commercial buildings in the area now designated as the Washington Historic District. Composed of the waterfront business district and surrounding neighborhoods, the Historic District also boasts fine examples of revival, colonial, Greek, federal, traditional cottages, and other architectural styles. Washington s historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the largest commercial and residential historic districts in North Carolina. It is a source of pride for the community, and the City of Washington is committed to preserving the historic character of this area. 10 6 Surprising Facts About St. Valentine 1. The St. Valentine who inspired the holiday may have been two different men. Officially recognized by he Roman Catholic Church, St. Valentine is known to been a real person who died around A.D His true identity was questioned as early as A.D. 496 by Pope Gelasius I, who referred to the martyr as being known only to God. One account from the 1400s decorates Valentine as a temple priest who was beheaded near Rome by the emperor Claudius II for helping Christian couples wed. 2. In all, there are about a dozen St. Valentines, plus a pope. The saint we celebrate on Valentine s Day is known officially as St. Valentine of Rome in order to differentiate him from the dozen or so other Valentines on the list. Because Valentinus is the Latin word for worthy, strong, or powerful, it was a popular moniker between the second and eighth centuries A.D.. Several martyrs over the centuries have carried the name. 3. Valentine is the patron saint of beekeepers and epilepsy, among many other things. Saints are certainly expected to keep busy in the afterlife. Their holy duties include interceding in earthly affairs and entertaining petitions from living souls. People call on him to watch over the lives of lovers, of course, but also for interventions regarding beekeeping and epilepsy, as well as the plague, fainting and traveling. 4. You can find Valentine s skull in Rome The flower-adorned skull of St. Valentine is on display in the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome. In the early 1800 s, the excavation of a catacomb near Rome yielded skeletal remains and other relics now associated with St. Valentine. 5. Chaucer may have invented Valentine s Day. The medieval English poet Geoffrey Chaucer often took liberties with history, placing his poetic characters into fictitious historical contexts that he represented as real. 6. You can celebrate Valentine s Day several times a year. Because of the abundance of St. Valentines on the Roman Catholic roster, you can choose to celebrate the saint multiple times each year. Besides February 14, you might decide to celebrate St. Valentine of Viterbo on November 3. Or maybe you want to get a jump on the traditional Valentine celebration by feting St. Valentine of Raetia on January 7. Women might choose to honor the only female St. Valentine, a virgin martyred in Palestine on July 25, A. D. 308.The Eastern Orthodox Church officially celebrates St. Valentine twice, once as an elder of the church on July 6 and once as a martyr on July 30. Whenever and however you decide to celebrate, Happy Valentine s Day! 10
