1 Church Life 2017 ISSUE 5 Church Life is published monthly Royal Oak First United Methodist Church 320 West Seventh Street Royal Oak, Michigan Phone (248) office@rofum.org Editor: Sam Garrett sgarrett@rofum.org Webmaster: Bob Demyanovich Proofers: Virginia Borts, Kay LaCombe Contributors: The Congregation May 14 for June Issue Dear Friends... We took our family to Disney World a couple of years ago. Now, I have to admit that I was skeptical. I thought that the whole Disney experience was just a bunch of hype. The main purpose of the whole thing was to get us to drop a bunch of money we didn't really have for a week that, when it was all over, would leave us saying to ourselves, That s it? Well, I was wrong. It was a magical week. We had a wonderful time. It was good for our family. We felt closer when we left and thought a lot about what it will take to come back again. So what was the magic that made Disney World so magical? Was it the rides? Not really. Was it the characters and costumes? Not really. Was it the food? Nope, not especially. What made Disney s magic magical was the hospitality. Without fail every single staff person treated our family like we were the most important people at Disney World. They answered all our questions. They helped solve problems. They took the time to listen to our kids and asked questions about who we were with genuine interest in our experience. We really felt like we were their guest. And that kind of welcome was what made us want to come back! We have been asking ourselves this whole year, Where is God calling us? I believe that part of that answer is that God is calling Royal Oak First to be the most welcoming church in the neighborhood. We want people to leave each week feeling like they were noticed, they were cared for, they were listened to, and they were important. Long before they experience the music or the message, we want people to say, Hey, I like it here. I think I d like to come back! Here are just a couple of the things that our friends at Disney have taught me about hospitality: Focus on who is in front of you. The person in front of you, or next to you, is the only person you have to worry about right now. Look at them. Engage with them. Give them your attention. Let them know they matter. Thank people for showing up. At every moment the folks of Disney tell you that they are glad that you are there! They go above and beyond. Need to find the nearest bathroom? - any team member will stop what they are doing and make sure you find what you are looking for. It's not fake. The people at Disney love people. They love helping people have an enjoyable, memorable experience. It is not a gimmick. It is just who they are. Continued on page 2...

2 PAGE 2 CHURCH LIFE MAY 2017 Continued from page 1... We are a growing congregation. People are being drawn by what the Spirit is doing here at Royal Oak First. What will help people want to keep coming back? Good music? Sure. Good preaching? You bet. Good programs? Doesn't hurt! But being the most welcoming church in the neighborhood - that is how I believe God is calling Royal Oak First to be known throughout the area. Won t you join us in helping make this happen? It starts with loving, caring for, and connecting with the person right in front of you, and right next to you. MICHIGAN CONCERT CHOIR RETURNING TO ROYAL OAK FIRST MAY 20, 7:00 PM Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 20, at 7:00 pm. Once again you will have the opportunity to hear the Michigan Concert Choir in one of its final concerts under the direction of Maureen Miles. Maureen has written a number of musicals which the choir has performed. The evening's program will be "The Best of Maureen Miles" featuring music from three of her musicals as well as songs she wrote for the Muppet Movie "Heavenly Tales." Maureen will be leaving Michigan so this will be her farewell appearance at Royal Oak First. The program will feature selections from "Prodigal" (which MCC performed here in March), "The Story of Job," and "My Savior, My Friend." It's no secret MCC loves to sing in our sanctuary. Come and enjoy an evening of Maureen's favorites. A free-will offering will be taken to support Royal Oak First s summer choir camp. LUNCH PROGRAM NEEDS Sack Lunch continues through our reconstruction. Thank you to everyone who continues to donate to our program. At this time our needs include hygiene items, men s jeans and khakis, hoodies, socks, underwear, light jackets, baseball caps, gym shoes, rain ponchos, blankets, tote bags, and backpacks. Items for clothing day can be dropped off before the last Monday of each month. April clothing day will be held on May 1. Food items always needed include juice boxes, fruit or pudding cups, fresh fruit, individual chip bags, hard candy, nutritional bars, and jelly (we have a lot of peanut butter). You can also help the program through monetary contributions designated for Sack Lunch. Delores Grier Sack Lunch Coordinator PILLOWCASE WORKSHOP MAY 17, 7:00 PM Our pillowcase making workshop for the children at Mom s Place will be held on May 17, at 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Many of the moms and their children arrive at Mom s Place with only the clothes on their backs. The making and gifting of these pillowcases to the children is a way to help brighten their day and their room, and show them God s love. Everyone, non-sewers and sewers alike, can have fun helping us make pillowcases for the children at Cass Community Social Services Mom s Place. You do not need to know how to sew to help with this project. The pillowcases are assembled in stations and several stations do not require any sewing skills. Cotton fabric donations in solid colors and prints can be placed in the marked bin in the elevator lobby on the lower level. For questions or more info, call Kathy Riggs at or

4 PAGE 4 CHURCH LIFE MAY 2017 CASS COMMUNITY SOCIAL SERVICES CASS COMMUNITY SOCIAL SERVICES is a Detroit-based agency dedicated to fighting poverty by providing food, housing, health services, and job programs to needy Detroiters. Reverend Faith Fowler has been the Executive Director of CCSS as well as the senior pastor at Cass United Methodist Church since FOOD: They prepare and serve one million meals a year. The food comes from their community garden and food rescuers such as Gleaners and Forgotten Harvest. Churches, schools, and hunters also help out by donating food. HOUSING: CCSS provides a warming center, an emergency shelter, rotating shelters, as well as permanent supported housing. TINY HOMES PROJECT: The Tiny Homes project involves the construction of 25 new, unique Tiny Homes to be built on land owned by CCSS. Currently one is completed, and six more are framed and being finished by volunteer work crews. The homes will be for formerly homeless and low income individuals who qualify. The residents will pay a small rent for seven years, at which time they have the opportunity to own the home outright. HEALTH: The Cass Free Medical Clinic is open at the Activity Center from 9-1 on Saturdays. Volunteer doctors and med students offer health screenings, provide simple medications, and arrange for pro bono procedures. During the weekdays, the Cass Activity Center is used by 125 adults with developmental disabilities. JOB PROGRAMS: CCSS began creating jobs for people with significant barriers to employment during the recession of They created Green Industries as a means to link employment with sustainability and to use sales to pay for the new positions. Currently 85 adults have jobs with Green Industries which produces: Mud Mats and Detroit Treads sandals from illegally dumped tires Coaster sets utilizing repurposed wood from demolished houses and glass scraps from a Guardian Glass business. Shredded materials through the document destruction program. Hanging planters were launched in the fall of Look for these items at the Here I Am Lord Table in Fellowship Hall the weekend of May 13/14 along with order forms so you can help support Green Industries! UPCOMING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Volunteers are essential to the work at CCSS. Here is an upcoming event in which you could be of service: May 20, 9:00 am: We are sending a group of volunteers (high school age and up no special skills necessary) to work on drywalling, kitchen cabinet installs, flooring and painting in the current batch of Tiny Homes. Contact Bob Berard at cerab@outlook.com or to sign up!

5 PAGE 5 CHURCH LIFE MAY 2017 YOUTH CHOIR NEWS BY JENNIFER SEMIVAN May brings the end of Holy Cow, but certainly not the end our youth music program! We have had an awesome year with our youth choirs in worship, and in special performances including our Palm Sunday flashmob, World Sabbath and Feast of Carols. In May we will begin rehearsing with our youth bands on Wednesdays from 7 to 8 PM. These rehearsals are open to any middle school and high school youth who play an instrument. We will continue developing these instrumental ensembles during choir camp. Contact Jennifer Semivan at jsemivan@rofum.org if you have a family member that is interested. And speaking of Choir Camp, it is right around the corner!! Those registration forms will be coming in the mail soon. Be sure to invite friends and family who might be interested. Extra camp packets are available, so contact the church office, Jennifer Semivan or Jennifer Tripoli if you need an additional one. May also brings Graduation Sunday, when we recognize our high school and college graduates. Don t miss the opportunity to honor these very special youth, and to receive communion from them. We are so blessed!! UMW NEWS MAY 4 MEETING INFORMATION 10:30 AM EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING 1:00 PM GENERAL MEETING AND REFRESHMENTS In May we will greet Sue Pethoud from Cass Community United Methodist Church. She will bring us an update on "Mom"s Place at Cass as well as alerting us to any immediate needs. This is an opportunity to continue traditional UMW mission opportunities. All are invited. United Methodist Women Book Club Meeting Wednesday, May 17, 9:30 am. We will continue our discussion on our current reading of Hidden Figures. All are invited. JOIN US AT CHOIR CAMP JULY If your child is currently in 2nd through 11th grade, they are eligible for Choir Camp this summer. Again this year we will be at Camp Ohiyesa in Holly. Registration packets will be mailed out to all eligible children in mid-may. If you have not received one by the end of May, extra packets will be available in the church office. BUILD TINY HOMES FOR THE DISADVANTAGED Cass Community Social Services could use our help as they complete the construction of their first six of twenty-five tiny homes, 250 to 400 square feet in size, being built in a north Detroit neighborhood. The homes will be offered, "rent to own", to some of those in our communities who are ready for the responsibility but have not had the advantages that most of us have. After completing financial and home ownership training, and successfully paying the rent and maintaining the home regularly for seven years, home ownership will be passed on to them. It is the only project of its type in the country that will provide deserving people with no equity, a toe-hold into financial self-sufficiency and an improved sense of self respect. Please be a part of our Missions Volunteer Team on Saturday, May 20, as we help move these houses toward completion for the first residents of this neighborhood. More details about the type of work that we will be doing will be available soon. Please contact Bob Berard for more information (cerab@outlook.com or ). There will also be a sign-up sheet in Fellowship Hall at the Here I Am Lord table.
